Kirkegaard Associates, 1987 – 2008

I have found myself in leadership positions much of my adult life. Leadership has occurred in community organizations, practice, the profession, and the military. Only five years of my fifty-plus years of professional service have not been in leadership and/or ownership positions. While at Kirkegaard Associates and serving in a leadership capacity there, I simultaneously led in the other ways as well. I have held office at every level of The American Institute of Architects over a period of 44 years and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for thirty years, culminating as a Colonel serving as the Chief of Staff of the 416th Engineer Command Headquarters during Desert Storm commanding 5,000 troops while coordinating design, construction, and property acquisition throughout the wartime theater in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait. Since 1964, my first full year working in an architectural office, I have participated in almost every type of project delivery that has been used and developed during that period. Conservatively, I would estimate that I have reviewed, written, and/or executed around two thousand contracts. Those contracts have included standard AIA agreements, international agreements, corporate and government agreements (foreign and domestic, local, state and federal), and unique agreements for specialized assignments. I have been in the court room in jury trials as an expert witness and as a defendant, a party to mediation and arbitration, and assisted in settling disputes outside of the legal environment. I have done marketing and business development at all levels and for all sizes and types of projects with a variety of client categories and have carried those same pursuits to fruition. I started a new firm that prospered for fifteen years before I chose to leave it to serve as Vice President of a 120-person architectural firm and manage its 70-person home office. I have managed the project delivery, financial, human resources, benefits, and operations of firms. My last location prior to coming to the University of Illinois in 2008 was with Kirkegaard Associates, where for twenty-one years I was Vice President serving as the managing principal. In the first fifteen years in that position the firm grew from eight to forty people with revenues increasing six-fold. The reputation of Kirkegaard Associates grew to international status and recognition as the firm

14participated in major projects around the world. The firm was a major participant on the design teams of projects that won nearly 100 design awards during the 21 years that I was there, and I played a significant role in all of them. The firm, as consultants in architectural acoustics, engages in projects at various stages of design and also in forensic work on existing buildings. For major new projects, focusing on architectural issues, the consultants may be involved in programming and throughout the building design, beginning with the siting of the building. The Kirkegaard team members then collaborate with the architect and engineers on the foundation design to address sound attenuation issues, on the planning of the building to achieve the most efficient adjacencies for control of sound transmission, on the material choices for the building structure, envelope, finishes, and hardware, and on the mechanical systems to achieve appropriate background noise levels. Audio and video systems design also is an important service of the company, integrating the system design into the buildings. Between my joining the firm as Vice President to serve as Managing Principal in January 1987 and my retirement from the firm in June 2008, over 1500 commissions of all sizes and complexity were undertaken. The projects listed herein represent a selection of some of the more substantial projects. After arriving at the University of Illinois in August 2008 and serving as a professor in the School of Architecture, in July 2011 I was named Associate Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts while continuing teaching duties in the School of Architecture.
