Instructor/Course Intro

•Instructor: Chip Fleming– MO & MS 101, MP 101T

•Object of the Course: GX55* Familiarization– Learn how to set up the GX55 SAR functions– Learn how to use the GX55 simulator– Learn the differences between the simulator and

actual GX55 software

*Note: GX55 is used hereinafter to refer to both the GX55 and to the GX60, which is only installed in the MT-7-235.

Student Intros

• How many Mission Pilots? Trainees?• How many Mission Observers? Trainees?• How much experience with the GX55?• How have you used the GX55?

– Direct-to function?– Lat/Lon display?– SAR functions? Which ones?

• Have you tried out the simulator?• What do YOU want to get out of this

course?

GX55/Simulator Setup (1)• These instructions apply mainly to the simulator:• Click on the “Options” menu at the top of the

screen, and make sure “SAR” is checked– click on SAR if it is not checked

• Click on the “Off/On” knob• Press (left-click) the “SEL” button when prompted• Set the speed higher if you want– I suggest 300

knots• Press the “ENTER” button when prompted• The remaining instructions apply to the GX55 and

GX55/Simulator Setup (3)• Press the “SAR” smart key (bottom of the

screen) until “SAR Map :On” is displayed• Press the “GRD” smart key until “Grid Type:US”

or “Grid Type:Basic” is displayed– We’ll discuss these two grid types and when they’re

used

• Press the “POS” smart key until “Position:DCA” or “Position:NW” is displayed– For the US grid type, we need to specify the sectional

chart we’re using—MD is covered by DCA (Washington) and LUK (Cincinnati)

– For the Basic grid type, we specify the Lat/Lon Quadrant (NW, NE, SE, SW)—we are in the NW quadrant

SETUP EXERCISE

• 1. Set up the simulator as follows:– SAR Map: ON– Grid Type: US– Position: DCA

• 2. Set up the simulator as follows:– SAR Map: ON– Grid Type: BASIC– Position: NW– SAR Position: Latitude 40, Longitude 70

US vs Basic Grid Type

• You only care about which type you use when you do a Parallel Line search.

• US Grid is used to search quarter grids– 7.5’ by 7.5’ grid size

• Basic Grid is used to search full grids– 15’ by 15’ grid size

• Why? Because that’s how CAP specified the GX55 software!

The US Grid

• Based on gridded sectional charts• Grids identified by sectional chart

designator (e.g. DCA, LUK) and number within the chart– DCA & LUK sectionals have 448 (28 x 16) grids– numbered left-to-right, top-to-bottom

• LUK sectional overlaps DCA sectional by one degree of longitude– western four columns of DCA sectional grids are

numbered as LUK grids 25-28, 53-56, ... 445-448

– DCA grids run 5-28, 33-56, ... 425-448

GX55 US Grid Selection

US Grid designators consist of a one-to-three digit grid number (1-448 for LUK and DCA), then a one-character 7.5’ x 7.5’ sector (A-D), then a number from 1-4 indicating which corner of the sector you want to start in:

The Basic Grid (1)

• Grids are numbered by the ones digit of the latitude and longitude and letter designators for quarter-grid (30’ x 30’) and sixteenth-grid (15’ by 15’) segments

• Corners of grids are numbered as shown:

The Basic Grid (4)

• GX55 SAR Position page must be programmed with the latitude and longitude of the 10º x 10º area– SAR Position page is only shown on the

GX55 when Basic grid type is selected– SAR Position page is one small-knob click

right of the SAR Map Setup page

GX55 Basic Grid Selection

The Basic grid is selected by specifying the ones digit of latitude*, the ones digit of longitude*, the letter designating the 30’ x 30’ quadrant, the letter designating the 15’ x 15’ quadrant, and a number from 1-4 designating the starting corner

*of the NW corner for the simulator, or the SE corner for the actual GX55

SAR Search Patterns

• Parallel Line, Creeping Line, and Expanding Square search patterns are GX55 routes created from GX55-generated waypoints– You set the parameters that tell the GX55

how you want the route generated– The GX55 creates a route comprising a

sequential list of numbered waypoints for you to fly to

PARALLEL LINE PATTERN EXERCISE• Set up a parallel line search as follows:

– US Grid DCA 64D, starting in the southeast corner

– Fly north/south*– 0.5 nm track spacing

• Set up a parallel line search as follows:– Basic Grid quadrant NW, position 40N, 70W– Which Basic Grid corresponds to US Grid 64?– Fly east/west*, 2 nm track spacing*The direction you fly should be a function of the winds aloft. If the winds are

from the east or west, fly east/west. If from the north or south, fly north/south.

CREEPING LINE PATTERN GX55/60 vs Simulator• In the simulator, you specify the DIRECTION as the

initial direction you want to fly, which is 90 degrees CW or CCW from the “direction of travel,” i.e. the direction of the route along which you are searchingIn the GX55/60, according to the UPSAT “Creeping Line Update” document, you specify the DIRECTION as the direction of the route along which you are searching.

• In the simulator, you specify the TURNS parameter as the direction of the first turn.In the GX55/60, you specify whether you want to start the search on the left or right side of the route.

around 1W5– 1.0 nm spacing– initial direction: south (180 degrees)

• Activate and watch the simulation...• Tip: DO NOT FLY THE LITTLE AIRPLANE

ON THE GX55 MAP DISPLAY! Instead, make your TRacK match the BeaRinG to the next waypoint.

USER WAYPOINT EXERCISE• Let’s create a User Waypoint for P-40,

using the Create User Wpt by Lat/Lon mode– P-40 is centered at 39 38.9N, 077 28.0W

• Now create a User Waypoint 2 nm north of VPORT, which is at the NW end of the GAI-ANP flyway, using the Create User Wpt by Radial/Dist mode– VPORT is an Intersection (K-type, i.e. US), use

radial = 010 degrees and distance = 2 nm
