Three of her vertebras werecrushed or cracked. Monika wasinformed that she might be a pa-raplegic victim. She thought re-turning to Switzerland would beher only option. During herpainful recovery, a vision urgedher to stay in California and con-tinue painting. Monika almostfully recovered and considersthat painful time her spiritualgrowth opportunity that re-defi-ned her, giving her the opportu-nity to look at life differently.Several galleries in the SanFrancisco area carry MonikaSteiner’s art. She is presentlypreparing for her next exhibi-tion in September/October 2010at the Micaela Gallery at 49 Ge-ary Street in San Francisco. Ofcourse you may want to contactthe artist directly through herwebsite:www.monikasteiner.net.Enjoy Monika’s philosophic artand allow it to speak to yourheart.

CaliforniaArt for your Soul….The bubbly voice of Swiss ArtistMonika Steiner lifts your spiritsand makes you curious: Who isthis artist? Monika grew up nearBerne. After teaching for a fewyears, Wanderlust struck her,and eventually she asked for a

sabbatical to spend a fewmonths in the US. Unable to puther teaching credential to gooduse in the small idyllic city ofPetaluma, CA, Monika turned toher hobbies and continued what

she thought was dabbling in va-rious craft forms. Then she en-rolled in the Art program of theSonoma State University and herworld changed. With the nur-ture of fine art mentors, she dis-covered her talent and fell inlove with the meditative ap-proach to painting. Her paintings are of abstract na-ture as she explores the tactileexperience between perceptionand reality, capturing fractionsof a thought like a snapshot intime by gifting it eternal life. She looks for interconnected-ness of the soul and the universeand strives to describe the ar-chetypal harmony in the uni-verse, bringing its balance to lifethrough her abstract paintings.Listening to this 38 year old ar-tist, you are intrigued yet notsurprised about her referencesto philosophy, metaphysics anda whiff of Buddhism. “To under-stand abstract art”, Monika sta-tes, “requires the observer toimmerse his/her soul.” Her bub-bles appear trapped under ice, someday to be freed like the

subconscious mind ready toevolve into reality when the“ice” melts. In her art, MonikaSteiner brings opposites into ba-lance and transforms a singlemoment into eternity.Monika may modestly contri-bute her discovery and successto a streak of luck of being in

the right place at the right time– but is it only luck? One thinglead to another. Absorbed bypainting, one day the artist suf-fered a severe equestrian acci-dent falling from her horse.

Racing up thesteep hill toward a group of wilymountain sheep, it was thedog’s job to bring them downthe hill, keeping them bunchedtogether, herding them througha series of gates, and into asmall corral, all while the clockwas ticking. With their missioncompleted, the dogs’ reward wasa cool splash in a tub of water.Smiles from the audience re-flected the instant pleasurethese amazing animals were en-joying.There was one competitor whostood out among the others, andhe was a crowd favorite.Dr. med. vet. AlaskaWillie from HomerHis colleagues said: “Why don’tyou go and look in Alaska?” Thatwas in 1970, when Willie cameback to Aspen, Colorado, andcouldn’t find work. And the restis history!

Lets start from the beginning:Willie Suter was born in 1942 inSwitzerland and grew up in Wet-tingen and Wohlen, canton ofAargau. He wanted to be a cook, but his father said he neededsomebody with administrative

skills. So that’s what he learned. When he was 22 years old, hecame to the United States. Somany products were marked

“Made in USA” that he had tocome and see for himself – andhe was hooked. Slowly he follo-wed the saying “Go West YoungMan” until he ended up in Aspenin 1967, landing a job cooking atthe Red Onion Restaurant. Fi-nally he was doing what he lo-

ved. After three years workingand saving, he had to satisfy oneof his greatest wishes – to seeAfrica. So he went there and du-ring one year traveled all over ina Land Rover. In 1970 he came back to Aspen –

see beginning ofstory! He ended up inHomer. From thattime, he says himself:“I drove a truck whilethe pipeline wasbeing built, had allmy possessions in atrailer, worked incamps as a cook, hadno plan, just livedfrom one day to thenext, made a fewbucks, went places

down South or Europe, cameback here to make more‘dough’… What a bum!”Then, in Munich, he met the

kind of woman who was interes-ted in what he did. Brigitte cameto Homer to check things outand soon they were married. Thetwin boys Paul and Arley arrivedin 1986. Before he had workedon the water, on research ves-sels, fishing boats or tugboats, but with a growing family hewanted to settle down. In 1990Willie and Brigitte were ready. They startet their all home madehouse and cabins, Bavarian andSwiss Style, unearthing talentsthey had no idea slumberedwithin. Brigitte’s Bavarian Bedand Breakfast was born. Here, dear reader, you shouldmove over to your computer andcheck out the web-site: aksm.com/brigitte with pictures fromthe B&B and the surroundings.Even nicer pictures show up

IndianaGroundbreaking for Berne’s Muensterberg Plaza andClock Tower

Clock Tower Ground BreakingMembers of Berne’s Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower steeringcommittee broke ground Wednesday, March 17, 2010, to beginconstruction of the town’s long-awaited clock tower project. Work willbegin soon near the intersection of state Route 218 and U.S. 27 inBerne, with a dedication ceremony set for July 31, 2010, during thisyear’s Swiss Days celebration. The clock tower will stand nearly 160feet high and will include four large clock faces and animated fiber-glass figurines that will emerge to perform a reenactment of scenesfrom the settlement of the city. The all volunteer steering committeehas secured $3 million dollars in private pledges to construct theclock tower and adjoining plaza.

Color Plaza Elevation Board SketchThis is a proposed Muensterberg Plaza design, created by Prince Ale-xander Partners Inc. of Indianapolis, the architect working with theBerne Community Development Corporation on the project. Specialplaza features will include a gazebo, a promenade, a water feature anda settlers sculpture. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the clocktower and plaza will provide a focal point for community festivals andspecial events, with a stage area and sound equipment for concertsand community gatherings. If you need further information, feel free to call or e-mail.Nancy BrownDRG Public Relations Manager306 E.
