Hargreaves & Fullan’s Professional Capital Book Club

Professional Capital Book Club by Andy Hargreaves &

Michael Fullan “Teaching is usually performed in imperfect conditions, in the face of conflicting expectations and demands.” “Sustained system improvement can never be done to or for teachers; it can only be done by and with them.” “We have to create a system that allows teachers to daily find the joy of teaching”.

These quotes are from the newest resource by two well- known educational experts. It lays out the route to policy decisions which will empower and enhance teachers’ abilities to positively impact student learning. This book’s principal thesis is that the only way to transform education is through supporting teachers in their professional learning, i.e., the development of their professional capital. Over four sessions, our book club will read, discuss, debate and reflect on all of these ideas and more.

Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the resource. Participants must attend all dates of the workshop.

Literacy Learning Team: Inspiring Powerful Writers (a.k.a. Professional Book Club)

“If we want our students to be better writers we need to teach them what good writers do. We need to give them plenty of opportunities to practice. And, we need to allow them to experience the impact of their words in print for real audiences and real purposes.” Lori Jamison (Rog) Be a part of a learning team that will not only read and discuss her book but will also have the opportunity to hear her speak at the Literacy Day inJanuary. Every teacher plays a vital role in shaping writers. Writing is critically important for school success but is also increasingly important in the wider world. The challenge for us as teachers is to help students understand the various forms and purposes of writing. Technology has changed the place of writing in the social and academic worlds and will continue to expand communication in ways not even imagined today. With good teaching all of our students can be part of the writing revolution. Over the course of four sessions, we will read, discuss and apply the practical implications from “Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing” by Lori Jamison (Rog). In this book, she presents 40 of her favourite tried and true mini lessons that can be used to teach everything from planning strategies to crafting specific genres. Participants are expected to attend all sessions. The book will be provided and will either be sent via the blue bag or will be given at the first session.

A Comprehensive Approach to Child Abuse Prevention

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that protection from sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and other forms of maltreatment is a basic human right for all of our children. It further states that children have the right to information on how to protect themselves and that government must take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect children. This workshop is an opportunity for teachers, administrators and school support staff to acquire the knowledge and skills to:

- Recognize behavioural signs and physical symptoms that may be indicators of abuse - Report suspected or disclosed abuse to the provincial child protection authority - Address many of the health-related learning outcomes in the B.C. Health and Career Education Curriculum

If you have already completed “Comprehensive Training” and want to return to be trained in a different prevention program, please contact Jan Sippel at 604-713-5204 or e-mail: [email protected] to register.

Jan Sippel, DLS Abuse Prevention Coordinator, is covering only one(half-day) TOC cost per school on a first come, first served basis. If another teacher has already been given the TOC in your school, please talk with your administrator about covering your ½ day TOC cost

Building Bridges with your Teen: fostering

connections throughout adolescence

Professional development for us as parents? Why not?

Parenting teens and pre-teens has different challenges than parenting younger children. As teachers and support staff we have lots of knowledge in adolescent psychology, in ways to talk with youth, and how to support students…but somehow it can be more challenging with our own kids!

Would you like to have less tension, more fun, with your teen or pre-teen? Do you ever wonder about effective ways to set limits as they mature? Would you like to be more effective in supporting cognitive development towards healthy decision-making?

In this interactive session, we’ll review adolescent cognitive, emotional and social development. We’ll explore ways to increase communication between parents and youth, and consider strategies that reduce tension and increase understanding at home. There will be time to explore issues (like computer use, or substance misuse) that might be causing stress at home and ways to support our teens and ourselves in handling them.

Come to this SACY parent workshop. Get to know your teen, and maybe yourself, better. Audience: All parents of pre-teens or teens

Calm, Alert and Learning

Recent research tells us that one of the keys to student success is self-regulation – the ability to monitor and modify emotions, to focus or shift attention, to control impulses, to tolerate frustration or delay gratification. But can a child’s ability to self-regulate be improved? Canada’s leading expert on self-regulation, Dr. Stuart Shanker, knows it can and that, as educators, we have an important role to play in helping students’ develop this crucial ability. Distinguished Research Professor at York University and Past President of the Council for Early Child Development, Dr. Shanker leads us through an exploration of the five major domains—what they are, how they work, what they look like in the classroom, and what we can do to help students strengthen in that domain. Audience: Administrators, SSWs, Teachers Presenters: Dr. Stuart Shanker,

Classroom Cooking: how to survive and thrive with 30

students, knives, and stoves

The idea of knives and stoves in young students’ hands usually evokes fear. And yet, many teachers and community programs have brought the educational experience of food preparation to their students, safely and successfully. This hands-on workshop will provide you with the skills you need to confidently bring food preparation into your classroom, such as equipment selection, integration with learning outcomes, and managing your classroom. Local teachers and Project CHEF and Growing Chefs will share their experiences and wisdom.

With each student story we will learn more about how we can help students stay in school and succeed. We will engage all stakeholders with strategies to build relationships and trust with youth. You will leave with a more complete sense of how to encourage sharing and develop a positive learning environment for your students. The presenter will review some of the more salient psychological, social or educational challenges confronting our ELL students. Using recent research information on early indicators/risk factors for learning problems, the presenter will share with participants some of the early identification and primary intervention approaches for ELL students.

4. Cross-Cultural Understanding: Mainland Chinese Community Presenter: Robert Li and Susanna Song Audience: Elem. and Sec. Teachers

About MindUP™

The research-based MindUP™ program offers engaging, science-based and easy to implement lessons to help students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade develop essential social and emotional skills such as self-awareness and self-regulation that they need to be more engaged in learning. MindUP™ was developed by The Hawn Foundation in collaboration with leading researchers and practitioners in neuroscience, positive psychology, and social emotional learning, and piloted and tested by school educators. Students participating in the MindUP™ Program showed significant decreases in aggression and behavioral problems and improved self-esteem, self-management, and optimism. The MindUP™ Program has four main goals:

• to teach mindful focused awareness; • to increase positive human qualities, such as

empathy, perspective-taking, helpfulness and kindness;

• to increase optimism and well-being; • foster a cohesive, caring classroom climate

that enhances learning.

About the MindUP™ Workshop:

Participants in the MindUP™ Workshop will learn about the program’s concepts and the 15 lesson plans; participate in several lesson activities; learn strategies for implementing MindUP™ in their classrooms and schools; and explore ways to incorporate the MindUP™ concepts into existing lesson plans. Raise It Up Program Inspiring Youth to Stand Up Against

Violence Raise It Up is an innovative instructional framework developed by WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre with the goal of preventing violence. The program is designed for teachers to integrate into existing curricula and to reach teenagers in high schools using thought-provoking and engaging activities created specifically for youth. Raise It Up works to build awareness about the root causes of violence and motivates young people to take action in making their communities safer for everyone. Raise it Up looks at oppressive social systems and structures, such as sexism, racism, colonialism and homophobia, giving students the language and the tools they require to name and challenge these different forms of oppression. This resource is intended to support youth to locate power, privilege, and oppression outside of themselves as systemic issues. This perspective on social justice is imperative to enable students to expand their thinking about social justice and learn to take action to create a socially just world. The workshop is a hands-on and interactive introduction to the Raise it Up resource. Workshop participants will be led through a series of Raise It Up activities and engaging discussions to demonstrate how educators can easily integrate Raise It Up into existing secondary school curricula and be a part of inspiring youth to be Up-Standers instead of bystanders. Solar Energy Workshop This workshop is to assist VSB school staff in integrating solar energy and the associated technology into their curriculum. The VSB currently has solar panels on 8 of our secondary schools, and as part of an ongoing effort to support sustainability in Vancouver schools, the Sustainability department would like to promote:

• using SolarBC lesson plans available at http://www.solarbc.ca/install-solar-hot-water/schools/lesson-plans;

• promoting the solar energy system to the community at large and to other schools;

• hosting a teachers’ workshop on solar energy available from WildBC

Charles Tupper Secondary in our district has been the recipient of funding to install solar systems. These solar hot water and photovoltaic systems are now in place. As part of an ongoing commitment to demonstrate solar systems to the wider community, a workshop is being held for all those who wish to know more about solar energy and the Solar Schools project.

Using innovative hands-on activities, the goal of this workshop is to familiarize educators with the Solar Schools Project systems installations, to introduce the lesson plans provided by SolarBC, and to facilitate their implementation in the classroom. The lessons provided by SolarBC/WildBC will assist teachers and students with their exploration of solar energy. These cross-curricular, multi-grade lessons are linked to the BC Ministry of Education prescribed learning outcomes for science.

The workshop will include a visit to Tupper’s solar panels. Date: Monday, January 21, 2013 Time: 8:30 am – 2:00 pm (with light lunch/refreshments

Respect, Safety and Violence Prevention (RSVP) Program

Facilitator Training

The Respect, Safety and Violence Prevention Program (RSVP) is an early intervention program that helps children and youth to understand and deal with violence in their communities by exploring topics about healthy relationships. RSVP targets vulnerable children in grades 5 – 7 who benefit from program services through the development of protective factors that can reduce their risk of becoming involved in unhealthy relationships. We also support students in grades 3 and 4, as well as secondary school-aged youth. This training program in coordination with Social Responsibility, Learning Services is intended for school-based staff who support vulnerable children and youth in school settings. RSVP’s guiding principle is that a healthy relationship begins with one’s own relationship to self.

This training opportunity has been made possible through our collaboration with the Vancouver School Board. It will provide an overview of the RSVP program model, sessions, group process, activities, resources, and lessons learned. The sessions will be experientially based to optimize participants’ understanding and sensitivity to students’ processes in RSVP groups. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the RSVP Healthy Relationship Group Manual.

The Chinese in British Columbia are now the single largest ethnic group, comprising over 30% of Metro Vancouver’s population, 58% of the Vancouver-Kingsway residents, and more than 45% of Richmond. The Winter Series

Are Socially Competent Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) More Anxious? Thursday, November 29, 2012, 7 – 9pm Tuesday, January 22, 2013, 7 – 9pm Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 7 – 9pm Dr. Grace Iarocchi, Director of Simon Fraser University's Autism and Developmental Disorders Lab, will discuss when anxiety in children and youth with ASD is a sign of positive, as compared to negative outcomes. Researchers have found that for youth with ASD, having more friends is associated with higher levels of anxiety. Dr. Iarocchi will address how social awareness, social motivation and insight into relationships may be related to emotional well-being among children and youth with ASD.

Understanding and Treating Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Tuesday, January 22, 2013, 7 – 9 PM Dr. David Worling, Clinical Director of Westcoast Child Development Group, will discuss a number of common anxiety disorders common to childhood (e.g., OCD, Panic Attacks, Social Phobia, etc.). Pathways for developing anxiety will be examined and specific interventions will be outlined. The focus will be on practical, hands-on suggestions that will include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Dr. Worling will also be sharing his recent anxiety app project in collaboration with leading psychologists, University of Victoria’s Computer Department and the SFU Psychology Department.

How to Maximize the Use of Technology for Your Special Needs Students: Tues, Jan. 29, 2013, 7 – 9 PM Colette Massie, with 20 years of experience as the SET-BC Assistive Technology Consultant, will provide tools and methodology for technology selection and implementation which are student driven and task specific. Technology is often seen as the solution for many students with special needs. There is an expectation that providing a student with his/her own laptop or iPad will address a variety of educational challenges. We may be surprised and disappointed

when this technology driven-approach fails to deliver the desired results. A more customized approach to technology selection can maximize technology use and lead to improved outcomes. Practical application to school and home environments will also be discussed.

Transforming Elementary Classroom Environments with Inspiration from Reggio Emilia

The philosophy from Reggio Emilia offers many principles that can assist us in fos-tering a learning environment that is beautiful, responsive, interactive, and reflec-tive of all who share a classroom. Combining this with some basic principles of interior design, such as color, texture, lighting, and furniture layout, can make for endless possibilities for inspiring spaces. Imagine creating intentional environ-ments that have engaging materials to be explored, skillful narrations of the chil-dren’s thoughts and processes, and thoughtful learning spaces to support rela-tionships, active investigation, and different learning styles.

Applying Theatre for Living in the Classroom

Theatre for Living enhances the teacher’s vocabulary so they can approach teaching from a different type of creative perspective. It also allows for an expanded learning experience for the student. Many teachers who have undergone Theatre for Living training note that practicing the principles in the classroom empowers students in their individual learning experiences. Theatre for Living promotes and develops critical thinking skills that students can apply, not only in every school subject, but also in their non-academic lives. It encourages students to use their brains creatively and supports their problem-solving abilities. Of course, Theatre for Living is not just beneficial for students, it is also a useful tool for teachers and all other positions in a school environment. Because participants choose their workshop’s focus, issues and challenges that teachers, administrators, students, and parents experience within the educational setting are often brought to light. It offers an opportunity, in a non-traditional context, for the issue to be explored in a creative and engaging way. Theatre for Living also offers opportunities for teachers and students to learn empathically. Regardless of the entrenched perspective of any individual, Theatre for Living can illuminate the motivation behind certain behaviours through concrete, theatrical exercises. The participants end up uncovering and deconstructing their own behaviours as well as those of people they are often unable to understand. In this way, Theatre for Living can stimulate dialogue between parties that may feel disconnected on the surface and help reach mutual understanding.
