Periodic Assessments in LAUSD
• Superintendent Roy Romer has set two priorities for LAUSD:
1. Build more schools 2. Increase academic rigor in the classroom
• Formative periodic assessments, working in tandem with enhanced professional development, form the cornerstone of LAUSD’s efforts to increase academic rigor.
• On June 24, 2003, the Board of Education voiced unanimous support by voting 7-0 for implementation of this program.
• This program is beginning with Math, and is slated to expand to English Language Arts and Science.

Power of Periodic Assessment
• The Periodic Assessment program, an expansion of the District’s current periodic testing program, can have a positive impact on instruction by:
1. Providing detailed diagnostic information to teachers
2. Allowing for efficient use of instructional time and resources
3. Providing re-teach tools to teachers for areas of student weakness
4. Facilitating targeted professional development and intervention programs

The success of this periodic assessment program will be determined by the strength of support and clarity of vision provided by the instructional leadership.

Math Periodic Assessments
The LAUSD/ETS-Edusoft Partnership
• ETS test development• ETS, under the direction and approval of the LAUSD
Mathematics Committee, will develop quarterly assessments for Kindergarten through Algebra I, linked to LAUSD’s instructional guide.
• Edusoft scoring and reporting• Edusoft will provide scoring and reporting services
through its Paper-to-Web scoring technology, with 24-hour turn around time for reports. Additionally, Edusoft will provide its individualized re-teaching tools for use by educators in the District.

ETS Assessment Design
• Structure of the Assessments• K-1: 20 MC, 1 CR• 2-Algebra I: 30 MC, 1 CR, with end-of-course tests
in the 4th quarter• Versions
• There are five versions of each quarterly assessment, one for each of the five testing windows per quarter.
• Language• Tests will be administered in English and in
Spanish for “waiver to basic” students• Field Testing of Items
• Items will serve as both operational and field test items. ETS will be providing real time item analysis services to ensure the highest quality assessment results are achieved.
