Attendance

• All students are expected to attend every class session of each course for which they are registered.

• Cannot miss lab-

– must do a make-up or will receive a zero

– Can only make-up 2 labs maximum

• Students are responsible for all that transpires in class whether or not they are in attendance.

3 lecture exams will be given Lowest grade will be dropped ONLY IF

all exams have been takenNo- make-up exams will be given

2 highest grades combine to make up 45% of your course grade

 Laboratory:

35% of your course grade   lab exercises (10 pts)

field trips (10 pts)

quizzes (30 pts)

•All laboratory assignments are due at the end of the lab period unless you get permission to hand it in next class

Grading

Final Exam:

–A cumulative final exam will constitute 20% of your course grade. It will be given on the last day of class

• 10 current, oceanography-related articles and an in-depth analysis/ summary of each article

• Due by Dec 9th– NO LATE JOURNALS WILL BE ACCEPTED

1Field Trips

• This course includes field trips that will take the place of lab periods.

• Attendance on these field trips is expected.- make-ups are available with instructor’s permission

Ocean Facts:

• Covers 71% of the earth’s surface

• Accounts for 97% of the water on earth (rest in land ice, groundwater, lakes & rivers)

• Average depth = 3,796 meters (12,451 feet) (deepest = Mariana trench 11,022 m or 36,163 ft)

• Average temp = 3.9oC (only 39oF)

• Oceanography is the scientific study of the ocean by applying traditional sciences, such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and engineering, to all aspects of the ocean.
