Cyclists warned to light upCyclists are being told they risk a $110 fine if their lights aren’t visible, the warning is-sued as the days get shorter.A joint campaign by Bike Wise, Nelson Police and Nel-son City Council called Be Bright will take effect this week and will aim to keep cyclists well lit.The initiative will also see roving cycle ambassadors offering to fit lights on un-lit bikes for free and police checkpoints where police will assess reflective gear and lights.By law cyclists need reflective lights and when light is dim or dark a flashing rear-facing light and a white or yellow head light. Not having these can result in a $55 fine for each missing light.Sergeant John Maxwell, of Nelson, says during the campaign there may be

some scope to give cyclists a chance to have lights fit-ted and infringement notices cancelled during a short am-nesty period.Four other New Zealand cities will join Nelson for the campaign to reduce cy-cling accidents and increases awareness of cyclist safety.Cyclists’ visibility to other road users, especially during times of low light, is an es-sential part of cyclists’ safety. The ‘Be Bright’ campaign, traditionally run in Nelson in June and July, is being run a little earlier this year to coin-cide with shortened daylight hours affecting commuting cyclists, says NCC road safe-ty adviser Marg Parfitt.“Wearing bright, reflective and high-visibility clothing, and using front and rear bike lights, are simple ways for cyclists to improve their vis-ibility.”

Local nurse Diane Auld says the day is a great opportunity to recognise all nurses.“Nurses in Primary care are in a very valuable role, and we’re very privileged to be able to have that role. I think it’s a matter of taking the opportunity that goes with that role and developing

these things further; for me, advanc-ing nursing is really, really important.”Diane has seen 17 years in a private practice. When she started out it was in a prac-tice with only two doctors, two nurses and two admin staff. Now, nearly two decades later, she is head nurse in a team of six, and says one of the great-est developments has been the move towards working as a team.Diane has trained in midwifery, has tutored other nurses and worked with maternal and child health during her time on the changing scene of health

care. She now works with chronic con-ditions management, helping people with diseases such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease self-manage their condition.Florence Nightingale’s legacy of de-veloping health care is still being built on by her contemporary counterparts. “Throughout the years I have been very involved in bending the role of nurses and working with other nurses to grow our role. We’re really fortunate that the potential is here in Primary care, even more now, to expand our role,” says Diane.

May 8 by holding a fundraising Pink Ribbon High Tea at Fashion Island. Organisers are aiming for 200 guests.

Local retailer Bob Wren has applied for a trade-mark on the name Weetabix hoping it will put an end to a three week long saga that has seen him threatened with legal action over two boxes of cereal.Bob, the owner of English Bob’s Empo-rium, was threatened with legal action by Sanitarium for selling Weetabix, an English equivalent to Weet-Bix. Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden says selling Weetabix in New Zealand breached a trademark held by the company because it was too simi-lar to Weet-Bix. Weet-Bix could not be sold in England because of a similar trademark.Sanitarium wrote Bob a formal letter demanding he stop selling the Weeta-bix in his English boutique store by last Friday and asking him to courier all remaining Weeta-bix to their head office. It also tells him to hand over contact details, including the names of all the people Bob had distributed or sold the cereal to, he refused to comply.However, he has since sold the last remaining boxes of Weetabix and hopes this is the end of

the whole ordeal.Bob has applied to register the Weetabix brand name with the New Zealand Intellectual Prop-erty Office in the hope that it will allow him to keep selling the product in the future. He says the name Weetabix, all one word, is not owned by anyone in the country and if he gets the green

light then he will continue selling them in the “low key” manner he had done previously. He had never advertised the product and the shelf they were on was not even visible from the footpath. “I hope it does [come through] but it’s no big deal. If they leave me alone then I won’t say anything,” says Bob. “If it doesn’t come through then I’d de-mand to know why. I just want them to prove to me that I’m doing something illegal. I haven’t even got any on the shelf at the moment. I’m not a threat to

them. It’s as simple as that.”Bob has said all along that he could not afford to take Sanitarium to court.Bob’s story has attracted plenty of national in-terest with the New Zealand Herald, Otago Daily Times and Yahoo Xtra! publishing his story. Bob was also interviewed on Radio New Zealand and his story was mentioned on TV3’s 7 Days.

Tomorrow 28 people are set to officially become Nelsonians as part of a citizenship ceremony at Nelson City Council.Thirteen different nationali-ties will take part in the cer-

emony, where they will swear allegiance to the Queen of New Zealand in front of the Nelson mayor.Among the nationalities taking part are five Americans, five

Myanamari, four South Afri-cans, three British, three Ger-man and one each from Swit-zerland, Ireland, Korea, Tonga, American Samoa, Vietnam, Trinidad and Holland.

The chant “Aotearoa is not for sale” echoed down Trafalgar St as hundreds marched to show their stance as firmly against the sale of New Zealand assets to private parties and on the international market.Led by local activist Rachel Boyack and members of the Green Party and Labour Party, the protest intended to raise awareness of the government’s current and future intentions to sell off New Zealand assets and was run alongside similar protests in the North Is-land.Protesters were stating that the sale of assets will cause a significant financial back-lash to New Zealand’s econ-omy, resulting in the loss of a projected $100 million annually, as well as a lower-ing of working conditions and wages on a national scale.Protestors had been notified through emails from organisations as well as by word of mouth and Rachel Boyack, who organised the march, says she is “really pleased” with the turnout, after having only 10 days to put it together. Many in the crowd brought hand painted signs and banners, and Rachel said those

leading the protest were heartened by the community backing.“If you don’t turn up and stand up against it you’re just saying yes to it. You gotta say no to it,” says protestor Mark Fielding, holding a sign reading “Don’t sell NZ from under our feet.”Kevin Haig from the Green Party stated that the sales are a “betrayal by the gov-ernment” and are for “the benefit of the wealthiest at the expense of everybody else”.

He concluded his speech by saying “This is our country. This is our heritage. This is the legacy we’ve left for our grandchildren. It is not for sale.”Protesters were urged to sign the petition against the asset sales, with 600 signatures added on the day. Foodstuffs South Island has confirmed the purchase of the Raeward Fresh brand, including the store in Nelson, but there will be no effect for its staff and customers it says.Foodstuffs South Island’s retail opera-tions general manager Alan Malcolm-son confirmed the purchase yesterday but says all three stores will remain in-dividually owned and operated, similar

to Foodstuffs’ current brands like New World, Pak ’n Save, Four Square and Liquorland.Alan says Foodstuffs identified the food sector that Raeward Fresh represents as an area of growth and suggests they could be opening more Raeward Fresh stores around the South Island. “We will be looking to develop the brand in key centres throughout the South Island. We

are very excited about the brand and in the future we look forward to bringing the Raeward Fresh offering to more of our customers,” Alan says.The takeover will have no effect for the stores, staff and its customers. “The ex-isting owners, the Thomas family, will remain responsible for the day-to-day running of the stores and we anticipate it will be business as usual.”

Some of the region’s unique pieces of art will be on display at Club Waimea this Saturday – once they walk through the door.Ink’d 12, Nelson’s latest tattoo expo will show-case the best local tattoos, tattoo artists, crown “Mr and Mrs Ink’d 12” and feature top graffiti artists, body pierces, muscle cars, roller derby girls and burlesque dancers.Brendan Benjamin of Out There Entertainment came up with the idea, having been to other tat-too shows around New Zealand. He says there had not been a similar show in Nelson for at least 18 months and it was something the indus-try was definitely looking forward to with more than 170 sponsors supporting it. “It’s about time artists in Nelson got recognised for the work that they do and people get awarded for the art that they wear. Nelson hasn’t had a decent tattoo show in a long time,” he says. “The tattoo scene has really grown. It’s not about being ‘thug life’ and criminal, it’s all about artwork and artwork that you wear.”There will be no gang patches allowed and while

Over the course of the past few years I’ve spoken with dozens of people who have grown up in Nelson and they often say they can recall when everyone knew each other and walking down Trafalgar St would take several hours due to the number of people they would have to stop and chat with.They tell me how much they miss that as Nelson has grown and suggest the city is a less friendly place because of it. A month ago Neighbours Day was held with around a dozen neighbourhoods joining in and hosting a street party or get together and last week the Weekly ran a story on Halifax St East getting together

to host their ‘Autumn Games’, a chance for the neighbours to get to know each other.I often see this kindness as an editor of a community newspaper – to temper the no doubt bad neighbours out there – but got

to experience it for my-self over the weekend. My wife and I moved into our new home in Tahunanui on Friday and by Sun-

day we had homemade cupcakes brought around by one neighbour and a fruit loaf dropped off (while it was still warm) by an-other neighbour, a 12 year old. Both were saying “welcome to the neighbourhood”

and both were very much appreciated.I know Kim MacDonald from Neighbour-hood Support will be rapt to read this story. She often tells me how important neighbourhoods are and I think she’s right. Four cupcakes and a fruit loaf may not sound like much but the meaning behind it speaks volumes. There is an exception to every rule but a slice of fruit cake – just like a neighbour who mows your lawns or collects your mail or just says hi – shows how friendly our city still is, for those who may have doubted it.- Our Town is a fortnightly column.

Sixty years of laughter, marriageOn the eve of 60 years of marriage and asked about her feelings for her husband of so long Heather Gray of Stoke replied: “He should have been smothered, not mothered”.Fortunately, Bill – the husband in question – threw his head back in laughter, along with everyone else in the room.She was only joking of course.But it gives a pretty clear insight as to one of the reasons they have been together so long, their obvious sense of humour.Bill and Heather met in a general store at Cheviot, North Canterbury. Bill was shop-ping with his brother and father and Heather, 18 at the time, worked behind the counter. After they walked out of the store Bill’s father turned to him and said “there’s a nice girl for you. Why don’t you ask her out?” Later that day his brother asked her to a dance on his behalf and so began a lifelong love. Or as Bill puts it: “My Dad didn’t know much about women did he? Look what he got me stuck with.”Cue raucous laughter.Bill and Heather married one year later when he was 23 and she 19, they were married at the Cheviot Anglican Church on May 3, 1952. Their wedding night was spent at the Hurunui Hotel and their honeymoon at Fox Glacier.Shortly after, Bill got a job at Glen Alton Sta-tion in South Canterbury where he earned nine pounds a week and the family lived in a house with no electricity. But it was the man-

ager’s job at Glen Wye Station in the Lewis Pass where the family spent the most time.Bill, then only 27, was in charge of a 63,000 acre station with numerous staff, an alcoholic cook, and power only until 9.30am. The cou-ple had three daughters and say they loved life on the station with daughter Helen able to recall numerous stories of hilarity, including throwing dirty stones at the clean washing after getting told off. The washing couldn’t be cleaned again for another 24 hours when the power went back on.In 1973 the Gray family moved to Wanga-peka where they bought their own 2000 acre farm, which they then sold just four years later for double the price. It was then they moved to Wakapuaka, oppo-site the turnoff to The Glen to farm. Bill also started working as a fencing contractor and builder, especially when they sold the farm in 1987 and moved to Atawhai.The couple now live in Stoke and say they’ve had a good ride. They started married life on a high country sta-tion with no electricity but will celebrate 60 years since then surrounded by friends, their daughters and family. Bill reckons the toughest part of his life was spend-ing it with a house full of females. “Don’t listen to him,” says Heather. “He’s lucky we didn’t knock him off.”

On Anzac Day I was at my best friend’s home, celebrating her birthday and with an amazing group of woman, we were discussing Pink Ribbon month. This is a time when we can bring together groups, donating money to an amazing cause – Breast Cancer. I believe most of us, know somebody that has or is going through this life changing experience. So instead of telling you about a store, I am inviting you to a high tea here at Fashion Island, on the 8th of May, Tuesday 10.30am, to support this amazing event of Pink Ribbon May. My aim is to raise $5000 for Breast Cancer Foundation. This is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family over a beautiful high tea and raise funds. Shopping in Nelson rarely gets this good.Last Thursday as part of Pay It Forward Day Specsavers customers took to the street giving away vouchers for glasses – free.It was all part of a promotion by Specsavers Nelson to take part in the Pay It Forward Day, made famous by the movie of the same name.Specsavers randomly selected three of its customers to give two pairs of glasses to. They were then encouraged to give at least one of the pair away to strangers as part of the pay it forward concept.Each pair of glasses will include a Pay It Forward explanatory note asking the recipient to spread the word and do a good deed for three other strangers.

And by the reaction from stunned Nelson shoppers the idea went down a treat.Douglas Smith, who handed out his two pairs of glasses, says people couldn’t believe what they were doing.“They were thrilled to bits. It was nice to be able to give something away and the two people I picked on were really quite pleased.”He says he had never heard of the pay it forward concept before but liked it and hoped it caught on. “It’s really good. What a good idea from Specsavers. Usually if someone gives you something it’s a drink or a sandwich but these are worth a lot of money. No wonder they were so happy.”

Locals prepare for midwives dayNelson midwives are preparing to celebrate International Midwives Day this Saturday with several activities.The New Zealand College of Midwives will have a stall at the Nelson Market on May 5 where goods and vouchers donated by local

BackgroundOne of the requirements of the Local Government Act is to facilitate participation by Ma

_ori in local authority decision-making

processes. Last November the Nelson City Council resolved to start the process to create a Ma

_ori ward in time for the next local body

election in 2013.The creation of a Ma

_ori Ward would

mean one seat at the Council table would be mandated to represent Ma

_ori within the

boundaries of Nelson city and equates to one vote at the Council table.

In reaching its decision Council considered the effects of historical representation for Ma

_ori, the current implications of legislation

and the future in a post Treaty settlement environment.

Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio says the move is historic and bold. “Council believes this is right for the future of our city.”

Local iwi and Mata waka representatives have also made many submissions in recent years requesting such a ward be established.

Nelson City Council would be the first of the four unitary Councils in the country to establish a Ma

_ori ward. Currently the Bay of

Plenty Regional Council has four Ma_ori seats

and various Councils around the country are currently looking at whether to include Ma

_ori

Wards as part of their representation review process.

Why does Council want a Ma_ori ward?

Nelson City Councillors have consistently shown their cultural insight and historical understanding of why Ma

_ori representation at

a governance level is important. They have also demonstrated their awareness of the practical implications and the need to have a Ma

_ori

presence at the Council table. •ItallowsMa

_ori input into decisions at a

governance level as intended by the Local Government Act, 2002.

•Itallowsforculturalvaluestoinformdecision making

•Itprovidesapositiveenvironmentfor partnership in a post settlement environment.

Looking at this from a practical viewpoint, the needs of the Council to govern our city requires access to a Treaty of Waitangi partner/

Ma_ori point of view to help Councillors make

informed decisions on behalf of all the citizens of Nelson.

Council is aware that although the Crown is the Treaty partner, an increasing part of the implementation of Treaty settlement falls to mana whenua iwi and local councils.

Iwi leaders are on record as strongly supporting better representation of Ma

_ori

around the Council table for the best interests of the city and to give Ma

_ori a more effective

voice in decision making.Further, the decision would give better effect

to the Local Government Act requirement to provide opportunities for Ma

_ori to be

meaningfully involved in its decision making processes. That would result in more effective governance for both Ma

_ori and the community

at large.

Is Ma_ori representation in government/local

government a new issue?New Zealand has had Ma

_ori representation at

Government level for more than 140 years.The Ma

_ori seats are a distinctive feature of

this country’s Parliament and date back to the Ma

_ori Representation Act 1867, which created

four Ma_ori seats.

Today there are seven Ma_ori seats.

So why the poll?The Council decision to establish a Ma

_ori Ward

created the opportunity for the voters in the Nelson City Local government electorate to initiate a petition for a poll of voters. The results of this poll will be binding on Council for a six year or two election cycle period.

What difference would it mean to voting in a Council election if a Ma

_ori Ward goes ahead?

Under the current legislation, a voter registered on the Ma

_ori Roll can vote for all seats on

Council, as well as the Mayor.A voter who is on the General roll can vote

for all Councillors and the Mayor but not for the Ma

_ori Ward candidates.

An automatic representation review of how Council is made up follows If more than 50% of voters say yes to a Ma

_ori

Ward and one is established, under the Local Electoral Act, 2001 this will automatically

trigger a review of Council representation. This review is normally held by Council every six years and sets out how Council is both formed and elected. It gives an opportunity to review:•thenumberofCouncillors(currently12plus

the Mayor)•thevotersrepresentation(eitherall voters

vote for all councillors or whether the city is divided into wards)

•ifwardsareadopted,howmanycouncillorswould represent those wards and what the boundaries are

Any moves Council makes from this review would be in place in time for the 2013 election.

If a Ma_ori Ward goes ahead will it cost more?

There would be a small extra cost to run a separate nomination process and to show entitlementsontheelectoralroll(estimatedat less than $500). Then election and council administration costs would be similar to that already budgeted for.

So what happens now?Everyone on the Nelson electoral roll and those on the Ma

_ori roll with a

Nelson city postal address will have been posted voting papers. You probably have yours already. The papers ask whether or not you support a Ma

_ori

Ward and it is as simple as a Yes or No tick.

Nelson City Council’s Customer Service Centre in Civic House will be open to take special votes until the polls close at midday on Saturday 19 May 2012. A progress result will be available within hours of the closure.

Final result will be published as soon as possible, thereafter.

Close knitter group clocks up 30 years

They have shared thousands of stories and knitted thousands of garments but since the Red Cross knitting group reached 30 years together, they have been on the lookout for some new members.The Red Cross knitting group has been busy working away doing voluntary knitting for other groups in the Red Cross banner and for local people in rest homes, refugee centres and hospitals. All their items, which include blankets, jerseys, beanies, scarves and much more, go to people in Nelson.Pat Borlase, the last remaining Red Cross committee member residing in Richmond, says that when she is doing Meals on Wheels, she can see when people are in need of a new knitted item.The current group, which doesn’t feature any of the founding members, say they aren’t 100 per cent sure why the group started but the common answer these days seems to be “do some knitting and socialise.”

“I gather it was just a group of ladies that got together to help out,” says Beth Greep.The group was formed when the Red Cross had two branches in the region; one in Nelson and one in Richmond. But now that it falls under the one banner, there are members from both areas.The group originally knitted peggy squares only, making them into rugs. But now they can undo a jersey and turn it into their own creation and design. “It’s developed over the years.”Glynn Thomas says the best part about knitting is that you can multi-task and catch up on the latest gossip. “You’re working with your hands but you end up working with your tongue as well,” she says.Pat says the work the group does in the community is “phenomenal.” “They’re sending hundreds of hats, singlets, booties, slippers, rugs to refugee places, hospitals, homes and places that really need it.”If you would like to donate wool or join the Red Cross knitting group, please contact Beth on 5448353 .

Finance Minister Bill English is signalling budget cuts, absolutely no new spending and reductions in spending in a number of areas. NZ needs to balance the booksNelson City and Tasman District Councils both signal budget increases, heaps of new spending and to hell with the ratepayers. They just want to

print more money.These irresponsible “Turkeys” (Phillip Wollaston’s description of incompetent councillors) have to go.Why is there a culture within local authorities that there HAS to be a rate increase annually. It’s time to change the culture. Get rid of the big spenders both elected and employed and make them learn to live within a budget like everyone else.How many households in Nelson can budget for an

increase in income of almost 5% per annum for the next 5 years? NIL. So why does the NCC think it has the right to try and impose such a burden on its community. Arrogance or stupidity or a bit of both I reckon.The long term plans are out. Make sure you send in a submission. It’s time to tell them to get real or get out.

Founded in 1950, the Geneva-based Union works on behalf of its Members, negotiates broadcasting rights for major sports events, operates the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, organizes program exchanges, stimulates and coordinates coproductions, and provides a full range of other operational, commercial, technical, legal and strategic services to its Members. The EBU also works in close collaboration with sister unions on other continents.This partnership is a fi rst for the EBU, one that its Secretary General, Jean Réveillon, explained as follows: “It has always been deemed diffi cult to organize international coproductions in the area of TV fi ction, partly because of national sensibilities and the choice of a fi lming language. The school holidays weren’t all about sleeping in and playing Xbox. Four of the five members from high school band Fire Without Permit spent the first three months together doing enough of that.But with two weeks off school, the now five piece pop rock band was busy practicing ahead of next month’s regional Smokefreerockquest heats.Fire Without Permit, a band named after a sign on the road, consists of 12 year old Hana Tava on vocals, Nelson College twins Rigel and Bowyne Blanchet and Waimea College duo Jordan Harvey and Jacob King, all 14. They all met through their music teacher and decided to form a band.Nelson heats will be held on Friday May 11, be-fore the regional final just one week later. So fine

tuning their catchy two originals, Love and Inspi-ration and You Can’t Fool Me, over the holiday period was paramount. Fire Without Permit first started two years ago, under the name Forever Without. Rigel says it was probably because they were forever without a lead singer. That was until Hana came along.So how did the new name Fire Without Permit come about? “We were being rebellious in na-tional parks. Nah in all seriousness we had a pe-riod when we were looking for names. There was a sign as we were driving and Mum was like ‘Fire Without Permit’ and it just stuck,” says Jacob. “It was better than penguins next 500m,” laughs Rigel.

They’re ordinary, everyday people, but when they’re on the air waves, their call signs identify them as members of the Nelson Radio Club.The Nelson Amateur Radio Club is the 26th branch of the New Zealand Amateur Radio Transmitters (NZART) organisation, and now boasts more than 60 members of all ages and walks of life who have discovered the joy of tuning in.Amateur radio is not just for men; the NAGS (Nelson Amateur Girls) make their voices heard, and the NZ WAROs (Women Amateur Radio Operators) have this year celebrated their 50th anniversary. The Nelson branch has 15 women members who have a weekly radio net as well as enjoying social activities.As well as having an enjoyable hobby, the club performs vital roles, including supporting Civil Defence and both councils. They have assisted with the installation and frequently perform testing for VHF radio transceivers, repeaters and special transmitting aerials to ensure reliable communication in rural areas for emergencies.These systems were tested last December during the flooding, where the dedication of the club was demonstrated through voluntary monitoring

of radio communications by club members at the emergency headquarters throughout the event. This year is Nelson Amateur Radio Club’s 80th anniversary of becoming a NZART branch. Nelson will

Sammi Abbott didn’t quite know how to say thanks, now it’s the turn of Nelson’s search and rescue team to be lost for words.Last December Sammi’s cousin Sharny Abbott was washed away in a raging river while tramping up the Hackett. He died in the river but Landsar found Sharny’s body quickly and were able to let the family grieve.To say thanks for their efforts 18 year old Sammi organised a fund-raising showcase on Saturday night, donating $6500 – more than double what she expected to raise – to the team.Landsar representatives attended on the night and say they were overwhelmed by the efforts of the Richmond teenager. “We do get donations from families that want to credit us but this is the first time to this extent. I’m still blown away by it,” says Joe Hayes, chairman of

Nelson Landsar. Dancers, singers and musicians graced the stage, with 26 acts volunteering their time and talents to help the fundraiser. Performers included many of Sammi’s friends and schoolmates as well as well-known acts from the wider

community.Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses. Sammi says the amount of work involved in bringing the event together was more than she had expected, but the night turned out bigger than expected as well, thanks to the help

and encouragement she received from family, friends, co-workers and the community. She was blown away by the response, and says she was glad to have had the chance to give something back to Landsar. “You don’t know how much work they do until they come into your life.”

Not for me anyway.• I heard of impatience on the boat ramp, a kite surfer in difficulty, a workboat retrieved, small boats out in rough weather. So an excit-ing weekend was had by some.

The first time brothers Jackson and Loui Harvey played against each other they were cheered on by more than 5000 people at the Botanics, re-enacting New Zealand’s first ever game of rugby.This weekend the Harveys – both half-backs – get another chance to go toe-to-toe when the two form teams in the Car Com-pany division one. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers and Galbraith Group Nelson, meet for the first time in five years.Jackson has emerged as one of the key ex-ponents in Wanderers’ currently unbeaten campaign, playing a pivotal role on the pitch and on the score sheet.Still at Nelson College, Jackson opted to play in the Car Company division one competition so he could get game-time in the number nine jersey but has gone from strength to strength in his first year at sen-ior level.But marking Jackson at the Brightwater Domain will be a very familiar face – his older brother Loui. Loui has been an ever-present figure in the Nelson starting XV ever since he finished school and will be doing everything in his power to make sure the formidable Nelson line-up takes

maximum points from its first trip past the Bright-water Bridge.Nelson will be well-rested following Saturday’s bye, while Wanderers come into the match having played three times in seven days. Nelson College A did not have it all their way when they met Jacks Drainmax in the Grade 1 opening game of the 2012 season.There was a considerable amount of turno-ver ball by both teams, which was not always converted – the umpires could be forgiven for thinking that they were yoyos as they were forced to change direction with each turnover. The teams could not be separated after the first quarter as the score was six apiece.Nelson College introduced Madi Bil-lens at goal shoot in the second period which increased the conversion rate, while goal attack Shevaun Collier was content in a feeding role.The teams traded goals in the second quarter as they each scored from their centre pass. It was not until well into the period that Jacks broke Nelson’s pass. Nelson held a 16 – 14 advantage at the major break.Nelson’s Ruth Swaney (first at centre before moving to the wing) linked nicely through

court and hit the circle edge well to put in a number of precision feeds to her shooters. Rosa Edwards returned to the GA bib after sit-ting out the second stanza to enjoy a productive quarter with Madi to take the score to 25 – 20.Nelson continued to maintain a slight advan-tage and took the game 35 – 28.

Coach Kathryn Orange made eight positional changes to her attacking end however was content to leave the hard working defensive trio of Paige Pointon, Rosie Bywater and Kea McGuinetty intact. All three hunted for the intercept and were quick to any

loose ball.Jacks wing defence, Jess Hildyard toiled for the entire game as she applied pressure on the outside of the circle. She gathered in three well timed intercepts. Centre, Chelsea Routhan was industrious through court while goal shoot, Kim Starnes shouldered the majority of the shooting – converting an impressive 20 from 21 attempts.

The action is already underway with Nelson Hockey in preparation for the start of another adrenaline filled winter season. It’s a great sport for all ages and skill levels, with everyone in the family having the chance to get involved, and opportunities to take it as casually or seriously as you desire.Nelson Hockey’s goal is to get as many kids as possible aware of the excitement of hockey and benefits they can get from the sport. It’s a great way to participate in an activity with their friends or make new friends, while staying fit and having fun.Four representatives from Nelson Hockey visit the majority of schools in the Nelson region to promote the fun and fast paced game. Last year they made 140 schools visits, running three-quarter hour sessions with each class, playing fun games and teaching fundamental skills. Since the programme began five years ago there has been a dramatic increase in registrations. All junior practices and games are held on the enclosed hockey turfs at Saxton Fields on Thursday after school. With only one entrance and exit, and constant supervision from the reputable coaches, parents can drop off their little ones for the programmes and be sure they’ll be safe. Programmes for players aged 3 to 9 cost only $30 for 12 weeks, and every new player receives a ball and height appropriate hockey stick to keep and practice with.The Kindy Sticks program gives children aged 3 and 4 the chance to get started on hockey, playing

games and learning basic skills. From there, Fun Sticks and Small Sticks build on the fundamental skills and begin playing some competitive games. Junior Sticks and Division 6 programs follow

for kids aged over 8. Either can be played depending on the level of commitment and

experience. Division 6 players are required to have played for at least two years, and the cost is $50 for 14 weeks.Nelson Hockey players are privileged to have access to the world class facilities at Saxton Fields. The artificial surfaces mean games can be played regardless of weather. The

lights are used to give good visibility after dark. Practices and games

are held on the turfs from 4pm to 9pm

every day of the week to accommodate for all the players in the region. “The turfs are one of the best utilized sports facilities in Nelson,” says Craig Brett, regional development manager for Nelson Hockey. The new Saxton Pavilion has facilities including a canteen, bar and spectator seating overlooking the turfs.There is a Junior Academy available to serious players, giving them an opportunity to upskill and go further with the sport. Many national players found their roots in Nelson, including Anita Punt of the Black Sticks. “For a small region we have a lot of people who are doing extremely well,” says Craig Brett.

The opening match of Nelson College’s 2012 Press Cup campaign is just days away so the boys have been fine tuning their skills ahead of Saturday’s clash against Burnside High School in Christchurch.

Pre-season fixtures have gone well with victories in Oamaru and Timaru on the Easter tour and coaches Bill Liddell and Grant Hunt are optimistic about the season ahead.

The Press Cup will of course throw up some tough challenges but the team is very well prepared having followed a rigorous fitness programme that has been running since Christmas, under the guidance of Jeremy McIlroy.

The boys are highly motivated to succeed and are well aware of the responsibilities as first XV players at Nelson College. For senior players like captain Mitchell Drummond, recently named in the New Zealand under 19 touch team, this campaign will bring to an end to his school rugby playing days. The intelligent halfback will be desperate to push for higher honours

Listening to weather experts during the week it would seem that our run of warm weather might be ending. This week will see snow falling to low levels and along with the rain will start to cool the water temperature which has kept good numbers of fish still in Tasman Bay. Carpet sharks seemed to be plentiful last week and dominated the catch of a lot of fisherman. A few snapper were still about Rabbit Island and the Boulder Bank but not in huge numbers. This would suggest that the fish are moving out to deeper water and reports of some good fishing around Pepin Island in about 30m of water would back this theory up.Several Dawn-breaker boats ventured down to D’urville in search of kingfish and groper but found them hard to come by. It was mentioned that there was an earthquake that morning which may have upset the fish and put them off the bite. Although they did do well with blue cod and other species of fish.Kenepuru has been very hit and miss this season but over the last couple of weeks some xos snapper have been caught. One Dawnbreaker family decided to try their luck and planned an overnight fishing trip at their favourite spot. Using a strayline rig with 7/0 hooks and a ¼ oz sinker

on the incoming tide during the change of light, the scene was set for a great night. First up were 3 small bream landed in quick succession, with lots of kahawai as by catch. After a few hours the incoming tide was really pushing and the salmon berley was flowing far and wide. At about 7.30pm in the pitch black, they got their first big strike, with 9 year old Kaleb overpowering an 18lb snapper to land his best fish for the season.Less than half an hour later 11 year

old brother, Jarrod had an almighty strike that saw nylon screaming off his reel. The next 20 minutes saw a titanic battle as the fish continued to make powerful surging runs. Being pitch dark, it wasn’t until the fish emerged from the depths at the side of the boat, that they realised it was a donkey of a snapper. Once the fish was in the boat, they saw why it had been so hard to land. It had been foul hooked in the cheek fin and

came up sideways(see photo). The Dawnbreakers recognise fish over 20lb with a special snapper pin and with dad and brother Kaleb already having one he was sure this fish would go close. So he was absolutely ecstatic when it weighed in at 21lb. An awesome effort by 2 boys who love their fishing.

Defending champion St Bede’s College are entered in the Southern Section of the Press Cup, meaning the two finalists from 2011 will not meet until the playoffs.

Nelson College will be one of the top teams in this year’s Press Cup competition.

Stoke A's back on track with win over WaimeaStoke's division one title hopes got a con-fidence boost on Saturday, beating fellow strugglers 29-19 Waimea Old Boys at Ju-bilee Park.Meanwhile the club's women's side fell just short in its first hit out of the season losing 24-22 against Waimea Old Boys, also at Ju-bilee Park in Richmond.Elsewhere in the club the junior grades kicked off with huge numbers again repre-

senting the club's JAB.But the senior division three side lost to Rangers 25-17 and the division two team also recorded a loss, to Nelson 29-0.Stoke's division one team has fought brave-ly in its early games this season after losing several key players during the off season. But it had remained devoid of a win, until now.Stoke showed more passion than its

Waimea hosts and were re-warded with a promising win. The women's game was a tough start to the season for Stoke, meeting last year’s cham-

pions in the opening round. But thanks to the try scoring prowess of new winger Fern Hoskin, Stoke contended well against Waimea Old Boys, going down 21-19. Shev Collier was solid at number eight, excelling in the lines outs, before taking a knock to her ankle late in the second half. Holly Fry was continuously dominant in the tackle. But it was Stoke’s flying new winger that stole the show, showing considerable pace to score twice for the visitors. Both sides were injected with the freshness of youth as the 2016 Olympic Games be-comes a big carrot for women rugby play-ers.The division two clash was another game where Stoke had to go to uncontested scrums right from the start because of a shortage of front rowers (mostly due to in-juries) in the club this year. Also losing two

of its best players to the division one team meant it had holes in the team. Stoke didn't capitalize on a stiff breeze in the first half and paid the price in the sec-ond half because Nelson played a smart tactical game and held onto their pill. Af-ter three games in a week the team will be making the most of the normal recovery time which is needed to heal the wounds that this game threw at them. On the bright side the team will soon be back to full strength. MVP was Aaron Dempster, with strong games also from Motoi Yokoyama and Ruben Young. Coach Josh O’Connor says it was a tough game right from the start. “We would like to thank the Nelson club for being reasonable with us and allowing the game to go ahead with golden oldie scrums.”

IN BRIEFRUGBY LEAGUE: The Rabbits and Cobras and were both big winners over the weekend in the latest round of Tasman Rugby League action. The Richmond Rabbits played the Ta-hunanui Tigers at Ngawhatu and ran away to a 46-12 win. Lucas Bennett had a particularly good day, scoring four tries. The defending champion Stoke Cobras had a tougher chal-lenge from the Wanderers Wolves but was still able to push on to a 58-34 win at Lord Rutherford Park in Brightwater. This week-end the Rabbits will travel to play the Cobras and the Wolves with play the Wairau Taniwha in Blenheim.

FOOTBALL: Mike White’s return to Nel-son football didn’t quite have the effect that was intended. The former A-League player missed a penalty for AMI Nelson Suburbs as they went down 2-0 to Ferrymead Bays in Christchurch on Sunday.

ATHLETICS: Nelson’s Phil Costley has won the 2012 Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon, fifteen years after his first win the race. Phil took his third Rotorua title in 2 hours 28 minutes 25 seconds, having fought off a determined challenge from Blair McWhirter over the last ten kilome-tres. He broke away over the last two kilo-metres and later paid credit to the runner-up Blair for doing a lot of the work over the last quarter of the race into a strong head wind. The 42 year old ran just off the early pace and came through just past half way to challenge for the lead and push the pace.

News of a potential ASB Premiership side out of Nelson has come too late for one of the region’s top young footballers with Canterbury United youth captain Erik Panzer sealing a scholarship to the United States.The former Garin College student will link up with Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Quinnipiac is a private school with an enrolment of more than 8000 students. Its sports programme competes in the NCAA Division 1’s Northeast Conference.Erik went over to the United States last year to prove his worth in front

of top US college scouts. While there was immediate interest, it was only when the 18 year old defender led Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League championship that the interest turned into genuine offers. Erik was approached after the final by an agency that helps get New Zealand footballers on college scholarships and it was only a matter of time before Erik was putting pen to paper on a deal with Quinnipiac. But it was the education that drew Erik to the States. “If I got injured then I’d have nothing to fall back on,” he says. “It’s definitely the right place to

go though. Out of college they draft players right into pro teams, so the MLS seems the most realistic option.” He will major in psychology and minor in sports studies.Because Erik has a US passport he will not have to obtain a visa. He is likely to start in the heart of defence during his freshman year and says having a crack at the MLS will be his main goal over the next three years. Erik will head to Connecticut in August, meaning he will miss the end of the Mainland Premier League season with Nelson Suburbs.

Ellie Bell comes from a volleyball family. Mum, Dad, brother, sister; they’ve all played it. So it comes as no surprise that through the routine games with the family in the summer holidays and the constant volleyball chitter chatter at the dinner table, Ellie looks destined for success on the court.Her latest achievement equals last year’s. The Nelson College for Girls student will again represent New Zealand with the Under-17 Women’s volleyball team in Australia.Ellie, 15, will compete at the Australian State Junior Volleyball Championships in Melbourne in June before taking on our trans-Tasman rivals in a three-match series.Being involved in the same set up at the same tournament as last year, Ellie is all the wiser and is looking forward to improving on last year’s results which saw New Zealand near the top three at the State Championship and lose three-zip to Australia. “I definitely feel more confident going into it and knowing more girls this year is helpful. I just know what to expect now and that definitely helps,” says Ellie. “We lost all three [last year] but we improved as each game wore on. By the last one it was actually a good game.”Ellie, who features prominently as a setter, will be joined by four Waimea College students; Annie Eden, Brittani Harington, Hannah Davenhill and Gracie Roberts, in the 12-person squad.Height advantage and physicality are Australia’s main strengths, says Ellie, but she was confident that New Zealand can put in an impressive showing in her final year with the team. “I just want to play the best I can. If I can put the things I’ve been taught into action and just do the basics right then that will produce a good game. Having had this experience myself I just want to support some of the girls as well and hopefully that will make the difference.”The Australian State Junior Volleyball Championships beings in Melbourne on June 28.
