Cincinnati’s beloved MusicHall is closed to all but construc-tion crews and will remain fencedoff until the fall of 2017. The long-planned, well-vettedand necessary renova-tions have begun inearnest.

SPMH is proud tobe a part of this once-in-a-generation oppor-tunity to reclaim andenhance our commu-nity’s masterpiece ofHigh Victorian Gothicarchitecture. We arepleased to collaboratewith the Music Hall Re-vitalization Company, the Cincin-nati Center City DevelopmentCorporation, the Cincinnati ArtsAssociation, and the resident per-forming arts organizations in as-suring the realization of theproject’s goals. Recently SPMHhas approved a grant request of

$100,000 to CET to assist in fund-ing the production of a documen-tary recording the renovation.

SPMH is especially proudto assist with therestoration of CorbettTower. The Patriciaand J. Ralph CorbettMusic Hall Endow-ment has made it pos-sible for SPMH tocommit $ 3,000,000toward establishingthe space as a mostelegant salon withstunning views,through newly un-bricked windows, of

Washington Park and Over-the-Rhine. Removal of the drop ceilingand restoration of the original sten-ciled ceiling is planned. With par-ticular regard to Corbett Tower, asub-committee of our board led byVice President Ed Rider, is activeon the project’s Design Review

Our outreach programs aregoing gangbusters, offering walk-ing tours around the exterior of thebuilding with emphasis on historyand architecture. SPMH will ex-pand outreach to schools, nursinghomes and civic groups keepingMusic Hall in the minds of the pub-lic.

Our acclaimed Mighty Wurl-itzer Organ Concert Series, underthe leadership of past President,Don Siekmann, will resume in De-cember 2017. At the May concert,

Theatre Organist, Mark Herman,praised Don and described theprogram as “the leading theaterorgan concert series in the world.”He clearly meant it. When MusicHall reopens, be among the first topurchase a ticket!

Our annual meeting date isTuesday September 13. Detailswill follow, but we are sure to haveentertainment and an update onthe renovations. We are so gratefulfor the support of our members! Remembering Christmas Past

Off the walls of Corbett Tower,on March 9th and off to Heller Con-servation Studios in Nashville Ten-nessee, that is. In November 2011,SPMH took on the project to resur-rect the screen panels of MusicHall’s famed 1878 Hook & Hast-ings organ.

These award winning (nativeCincinnati cherry wood), carvedpanels had largely been invisible,

their story untold, until 2011, whenthey were re-discovered as amongthe finest examples of the famedCincinnati Art-Carved FurnitureMovement.

In early 2013 SPMH con-tracted with Thomas Heller Con-servation of Nashville, a companyendorsed by Megan Emery, thenconservator of the Cincinnati ArtMuseum, to restore the salvaged

panels. Cleaned and repaired to agreat degree, yet uncompleted,these panels were brought back inAugust to be temporarily installedin Corbett Tower for the 2015SPMH Annual Meeting. At thatmeeting they were of prime focus,surrounding those who attended.Since September these panelshave been viewed and admired bycountless visitors to the lovelyspace, once the original location of

the College of Music, predecessorto the University of Cincinnati’sCollege Conservatory of Music. Patricia and Ralph Corbett, whodevoted so much of their time andfinancial support to this Music Halland the musical culture of Cincin-nati, will be remembered with therenovation of this room in which thepanels may have a permanent in-stallation.

SPMH has purchased a rareearly program card for the first se-ries of orchestra concertsat Music Hall. The con-certs were presented bythe Theodore ThomasOrchestra under the aus-pices of the College ofMusic.

Theodore Thomas,one of the preeminentconductors in the country,first presented orchestraconcerts in Cincinnati in 1869 atMozart Hall. Follow-ing his concert in1872, Maria Long-worth Nichols sug-gested to Thomasthat he direct amajor music festivalin Cincinnati.Thomas acceptedand on May 6, 1873Maestro Thomasraised his baton toconduct the firstMay Festival.

MaestroThomas went on toconduct the Festivalin 1875 and the firstFestival in the newMusic Hall in 1878.Following the greatsuccesses of the Festivals,Thomas was enticed to come to

Cincinnati to be the head of thenew College of Music.

This program cardannounces the first seriesof Symphony and Cham-ber concerts of theTheodore Thomas Or-chestra. These concertsare the first regular seriesof classical music pre-sented at the new MusicHall. The formation of theCincinnati Symphony

was still 17 years away. The card in-

cludes a lot of inter-esting information.On one side is thelist of the concertsand the rehearsalschedule. On thereverse is the list ofchamber concertsand the cost of asubscription to theconcerts. Not onlycould you reserve aseat for 12 Concertsfor $8.00 but youcould also purchasea reserve seat to at-tend the rehearsalsfor $4.00.

It was the hopethat these concerts

would attract people from outsideof the city. As noted on the card

“Arrangements will be made withthe railroads coming into Cincin-nati to run special trains, at re-duced rates, on the nights of theOrchestral Concerts.”

The card came from the col-lection of Peter Marks, a facultymember of the Cincinnati Collegeof Music. Peter Marks was one ofthe premier traveling minstrel mu-sicians in America during the CivilWar. While his primary careerwas performing with troupes healso gave solo performances andprovided private lessons. Marksultimately left the minstrel circuit

and went on to become a profes-sor at the Cincinnati College ofMusic. He died in 1883.

Mark Jesse, Peter Mark’sgreat grandson, has donated mostof the valuable minstrel materialsbelonging to his great-grandfatherto the Smithsonian. He reachedout to SPMH when he discoveredthis early Music Hall program inthe collection. We are thrilled tohave this documentation of themusical activity in Music Hall dur-ing its inaugural year.

The Theodore Thomas con-cert series was priced so that peo-ple of moderate means couldafford the complete series whichoffered an instructive view of theentire musical literature. The Or-chestra musicians were amongthe best in America and includedprofessors of various string de-partments in the College of Music.Mr. S. E. Jacobsohn, principal vio-lin; Mr. C. Baetens, principal viola,and Mr. A. Hartdegan, principal vi-oloncello, occupied the same posi-tions under Thomas in hisdisbanded New York Orchestra.For the first concert on November14, 1878, the quartet was assistedby Mr. Armin W. Doerner, pianist.The following program was pre-

sented on that evening: No. 1. Quartet No. 1,

“When the time arrived for thededication of the TheodoreThomas statue, President Taft lefthis box, and in company withLawrence Maxwell, President ofthe May Festival Association; Clif-ford B. Wright, President of theMusic Hall Trustees, and EdwardGoepper, representing theMunicipal Art Society,mounted the stage. As hedid so the orchestrasounded a fanfare.

The audience andchorus all stood as Mr.Maxwell presented thedistinguished visitor.The President askedthe audience to beseated, unless, hesaid, laughingly, theymeant their positions tobe a hint that his speechshould be short. He said:‘It was my good fortune yes-terday to hear a most interestinghistory of the development of theaesthetic side of the Belgium peo-ple from the Belgium Minister tothe United States. As he traced thegrowth of art and love for the aes-thetic of that industrious and indus-trial people I could not help but tocompare it with the similar develop-ment in this country. It took 1,000years to develop this side of theBelgians. We haven’t had time todo that in the United States, espe-

cially as regards the developmentof the art and music-loving charac-teristics of the working people, be-cause of the material obstacles wehave had to overcome. To thosewho promoted the education of theaesthetic side of our people, the

lovers of this country are deeplyindebted, and Theodore

Thomas was the foremostof these.’

President Taft thensketched the life ofThomas, telling thatthe famous composerhad served with hisfather as a musicianin the United StatesNavy and had strug-gled for a musical ed-ucation by playing in

theater orchestras.‘It has been said by

those who knew TheodoreThomas’ continued the

President, ‘that when he be-came conductor of an orchestra heceased to be one of the greatest vi-olinists of the age. It is fitting,therefore, that the opening concertof the nineteenth May Festival bededicated to the dedication of amonument to this great man. Hemade the tradition of the Festival.Those who now take part in it willfeel the effects of his influence. Itisn’t for me however, with theknowledge of music to comment on

his high and pure art, but even ifone is not a musician he cannot af-ford to have any but the deepestadmiration for one who made anideal, who lived up to the ideal andnever conscientiously departedfrom it. Hence it isfitting that on thisFestival occasionwe should dedi-cate a monumentto the founder ofthese musical fes-tivals and to thegreatest musicalleader the countryhas known.’

At the conclu-sion of his speech,the entire chorusand audience sangthe “Star SpangledBanner”. Mean-time the statuehad been unveiledin the foyer andduring the inter-mission it wasviewed by the au-dience. Born in Germany in 1835,Theodore Thomas had made hisdebut as a concert artist by age 7.Emigrating to New York City at age

10, the prodigy supported himselfand his family by playing in bands,dance orchestras, hotels. He ac-companied Jenny Lind as first vio-linist of the Italian Opera Companyat age 16 and at age 22 was given

the baton whenthe conductor ofUllman’s OperaCompany wassuddenly taken ill.In 1864 he organ-ized the TheodoreThomas Orchestrawhich performedin Cincinnati in thelate 1860s. It hasbeen said thatTheodore Thomasand his work in-spired ReubenSpringer to createMusic Hall. Afterconducting the for-mal dedication ofMusic Hall on May14, 1878 he wasoffered the direc-torship of the pro-posed College ofMusic by GeorgeWard Nichols,

President of the Cincinnati MusicalFestival Association. Thomas’death on January 4, 1905 wasviewed as a national tragedy. Thestatue of Theodore Thomas wassculpted by celebrated Cincinnatiartist Clement Barnhorn and hasbeen a fixture of Music Hall sinceits dedication.

Over the past several months,SPMH has worked closely withCAA and the resident companiesto develop a plan to pack all theartwork and statuary in the Halland move the items to safe stor-age during the revitalization.SPMH engaged two conservators,Michael Ruzgaand ElizabethAllaire to over-see thisprocess to in-sure the pro-tection of allthe items dur-ing the move.SPMH is fund-ing the cost ofthis work andthe cost ofstorage whileMusic Hall isclosed.

The‘move-out’began on Sat-urday May28th after thelast May Festi-val. Our teamremovedplaques fromthe walls andcarefully recorded their location.Mike Ruzga our conservator, ar-

rived at 8 a.m. on Sunday andbegan packing the paintings. Thiswork was completed on MemorialDay and all paintings are now instorage. Also on Sunday HoseaMovers removed the seats. A vol-unteer crew from the Sorg OperaHouse, a building designed by

Samuel Han-naford andSons in 1891,unbolted theseats donatedto the OperaHouse. Theirpreservationgroup isthrilled to havethese seatsand possiblyother items inthe future tohelp themjumpstart theirpreservationefforts. Oursculpture con-servator BetsyAllaire, arrivedon Tuesdayalong with acrew from Fen-ton Riggingand the pack-

ing and move out of the statuesbegan. By the end of day on

Thursday June 2nd all the statuaryhad been moved successfully intostorage. Michael Williams ofWooden Nickel Antiques, had alarge crew on site for removal of allitems identified as having possiblehistoric value and stored them inour warehouse. This crew alsocarefully dismantled each of thelobby chandeliers, moving them tostorage. Scott Santangelo and hiscrew have done an amazing jobcoordinating all of this work!

FRCH Design Worldwide, lo-cated at 311 Elm Street, has beenselected to design the placement

and display of art and artifacts. Thework is to include donor recogni-tion; presentation of the history ofMusic Hall and the resident com-panies; and the development of ex-terior and interior signage.

SPMH has agreed to provide a$100,000 grant to CET to help in aproduction of a documentary onthe revitalization. Focusing on allfacets of the work from planning tocompletion, it will feature inter-views with a wide variety of peopleinvolved in the incredible amountof work that will be done in a shortperiod of time. - Ed Rider

Sarah Bernhardt, most famousactress of the 19th century, had aninternational career, the immensityof which stretches the boundariesof credulity. The year 1906 was tobreak all recordsfor American per-formances, with anon-stop sixty-two-city farewell tour.Her engagement atMusic Hall in-cluded four playson the dates ofFebruary 15, 16and 17. Touted asthe most importantdramatic event inthe history ofCincinnati, all fourperformances were nearly sold out.

Not so coincidentally, AlbertRogers, New York promotionalmanager for Jim Key, had planneda tour that would rival Bernhardt’sfarewell tour. Bookings were madein nearly every Music Hall or OperaHouse in the country from Febru-ary through November of 1906,with the intention of breaking boxoffice records at every stop and tofirmly establish Jim Key as thegreatest star of the twentieth cen-tury. And records were broken! Inthe enormous listing of venues, JimKey happened to follow Bern-hardt’s Music Hall engagement inthe week of February 26, 1906.

With a seating capacity of 4,000,twenty-eight performances weresold out! This broke the record forpaid admissions in Cincinnati’sMusic Hall!

From March4th through March8th 1906, MemorialHall Columbus,Ohio, with a seat-ing capacity of3,000, fifteen per-formances weresold out breakinganother record forpaid admissions.

The week ofMarch 12th, 1906in Indianapolis’ withseating capacity of

2,000, thirty performances weresold out breaking the record forpaid admissions.

March 19th through March 21,1906, in Convention Hall, KansasCity, the largest-seating auditoriumin the world, Louis W. Shouse,manager of Convention Hall de-clared that “Jim Key held theworld’s record for drawing agreater crowd than any single at-traction that was ever exhibited.”Although Sarah Bernhardt per-formed Camille at the Kansas CityConvention Center to a crowd of6,500 in 1905, the record there hadbeen set in 1899 by John PhilipSousa with an audience of 16,500.

But in March of 1906, Jim Keyplayed to 18,000 breaking his ownrecord and then playing to a ca-pacity crowd of 22,000 the follow-ing night!!

And who was Jim Key? Onlythe most intelligent horse of alltime! Owned by ex-slave, veteri-narian, successful entrepreneurand philanthropist, Dr. William Keytaught his horse, Jim using kind-ness and no force, to read, spell,recognize money and do basic

arithmetic. Jim and Dr. William Keydid more to further the cause of theHumane Treatment of Animalsthan did any of the newly formedHumane Societies.

How is the SPMH tour program coming along?

We couldn’t be more pleasedwith the tremendous growth of theMusic Hall tour program. As the re-vitalization of theOver-The-Rhine(OTR) neighbor-hood gains mo-mentum, moreattention is beingpaid to this Na-tional HistoricLandmark. Thetour program hastremendous poten-tial to further servethe mission ofSPMH in educat-ing and engaging the public aboutthis iconic building and its role inCincinnati history. Over 4,300 visi-tors toured the hall this year. Inter-est in Music Hall is growing and inturn, so shall the tour program.

Since the building is closed, whathappens now?

The tour program will continueto meet SPMH goals, specificallythe mission to educate the public.Through community outreach pre-sentations, we will bring its historyto interested groups, schools andorganizations. Beyond the Bricks:An Outdoor Building Tour, high-lights interesting historical and ar-

chitectural information and coversthe immediate neighborhood. Start-ing this July, visitors can take ad-vantage of the glorious park justoutside our doors for a picnic and

tour combo after-noon.

This walkingtour fits nicelywithin a diversemenu of other lec-tures and presen-tations we aredeveloping. Our allvolunteer group,researches contentto find engagingand entertainingstories: the African-

American history to the building,the women who helped ensure itslegacy, the world famous organs ofMusic Hall, the celebrities and dig-nitaries who have appeared on itsstage. This outreach series of “vir-tual” tours will be perfect forschools, nursing homes and organ-izations looking for new, creativeprogramming. Upon the reopeningof the building, these programs willcontinue to serve the public.

What impact has the tour programmade in the community?

Although many people visitMusic Hall from all sectors of thecommunity, its rich history, connec-

tion to the origins of Cincinnati as amajor US city, and ties to art andculture draw a significant amount ofstudents and seniors. Over half ofour visitors this year were studentsof all ages and senior groups. Halfof all tour revenue from thesegroups was underwritten by SPMH.Transportation to get to the buildingcan be expensive; by underwritingthe tour fees SPMH helps makevisiting affordable. The outreachprogram will make it possible for usto take the “tour” to them!

Aren’t tour guests patrons of theresident companies?

Actually, Cincinnati’s Music

Hall is a local treasure, a nationallandmark of significance and a des-tination of international appeal. Wehave a good partnership with ourresident companies and offer toursto their ticket holders, but tours ap-peal to historians, tourists, and ad-venturists from well beyond thelocal community. Our guests hailfrom all over the state, from all 50states, and all over the world. Justunder half of the approximate8,000 people who visited this yearwere from outside the city. Further-more, most local visitors reportthey had been inside the hall “onetime or less”. We hope cultivating a

sense of pride trans-lates into new audi-ences for our residentcompanies and inter-est in sustaining thebuilding for genera-tions to come.

What does the Out-reach Program need forcontinued success?

We are growingby leaps and boundsand looking for volun-teer guides who arewilling to expand theprogram into differentareas of the commu-nity. When the Hallreopens, we expectthe tour program tobe busy! We needmore guides to man-age the expected vol-ume of visitors. Asidefrom strong presenta-

Music Hall Notes March 28, 1878 With the closing of its doors and

the much anticipated reopening ofMusic Hall, it is interesting to ‘flashback’ to the excitement surroundingits opening in 1878.

“The floors in the upper corri-dors are laid. The doors are beinghung in the Main Hall. The green onthe organ pipes has been subdued.Henry Fry is making a design for anew cornice to the organ screen.The rose window in the façade is ofiron, and weighs 15,000 pounds.The white plaster capitals now goingon the great iron pillars will bepainted. The bricks used in theMusic Hall, if placed in a line, wouldreach to Cleveland and back. Thecenter seats in Main Hall will frontthe stage; the divisions at the sideswill be placed at an angle. The endsof the dress circle reach over theline of the stage. Some of the cho-rus will sit under the circle.

All the subscriptions to the fundhave been paid except $5,607.70and this amount will be reducedvery likely to $3,300---scarcely 1 percent loss of the total $302,381.

Seven Hundred hickory chairshave been ordered for the use ofthe chorus. The Music Hall Boardput up the stage for the chorus, andthe Festival Board provided thechairs. There are thirteen foul airducts which lead from Music Hall tothe crest of the gable . This ridge is

a trough five feet deep and four feetwide, into which the ducts empty.The large stones, seventeen feetlong, which are over the chief en-trances and form the front of the ex-terior balcony, bend an inch and ahalf from a true line when lifted intoplace.

Photographs of the wonderfulmechanism of the organ have beentaken and are on exhibition in thestores, as are also photographs ofthe beautiful wood carvings madefor the organ screen.

Many persons who are associ-ate members of the Harmonic Soci-ety fondly imagine that they will beadmitted to the Hall to hear the re-hearsals of the chorus. No personswill be allowed to be present exceptthose engaged. This line will betightly drawn, with a policeman tohold up one end.

The iron fence directly in front ofthe Music Hall has been removed,making a sidewalk forty-four feetbroad to the steps. It was proposedto set the curb of the street some fif-teen feet in, to give room for car-riages, but this will not be done.Those who drive may enter on thePlum Street end of the hall wherethere is plenty of room.” (Courtesy Proquest Newspapers: Cincin-nati Enquirer March 28, 1878)

I Remember When . . . .

“Back in the 1990's Jo Anne andI were invited by another coupleto attend with them a fundraiserfor an Alzheimer-related organi-zation which was held at the Mu-seum Center (I think). This eventtook place in the fall. The couplebid on and won in a silent auction4 box-seat tickets to a CSO con-cert the following spring. Come

spring we all arrived as early aspossible and filed into the box.About 15 minutes later an ushercame in and asked to check ourtickets. It seems Patricia Corbetthad arrived to attend the concertand had explained to the tickettakers that she seemed to havemisplaced her ticket. Well ofcourse she had forgotten thatshe had donated the tickets theprevious fall! When our friendsreminded her she was very gra-cious and simply moved to the ad-jacent box. Everyone had achuckle over this.”

“I have been truly blessed tohave worked with all the artsgroups thathave calledMusic Hall“home” overthe past 45years…in-cluding theHall man-ager itself,the Cincin-nati ArtsAssociation.Therefore my memories are manyand varied.

But for these specific memo-ries, I recount mygreatest adven-tures with theCincinnati Ballet.I joined the Bal-let board around1972/1973 andsoon marveled atthe very firstjoint performancewith the Cincin-nati SymphonyOrchestra inMusic Hall ofStravinsky’sFirebird. Stand-ing backstage andwatching as the“Firebird" cameoffstage and literally, fell to thefloor, ‘took oxygen’, until she would

jump to her feet and dash backonto the stage, is still indelibly

etched inmy memory.

But, myfavoriteMusic HallCincinnatiBallet mem-ory of alltime oc-curred in1985 whenI was privi-

leged to portray “Mother Ginger”on stage in Music Hall.

I had been an officer of theballet, and wasdeeply involved inall the negotia-tions, planning,budgeting and fi-nally the openingof “The Nut-cracker” in 1974.

So, it was anexceptionallywonderful treat,when, in 1985 Igot my wish ofportraying“Mother Ginger”.Our worldrenowned Fred-die Franklin, per-sonally, taught

me the technique of twirling mypowder puff, and “blowing kisses”

Finally the big night!! Afterbeing strapped into my garishlybeautiful enormous gown, I stoodon a hidden movable platform andwas rolled out onto the stage withan assortment of boy and girl“gumdrops” under my skirt.

What a night of swaying,twirling, smiling, blowing thosekisses, and man-aging those“gumdrops” inand out.

“Do I have stories?! MusicHall is my home.” Larry Brown isproud of his 13 years as custodianof the building whichhis wife calls ‘theother woman’. ButLarry has had a loveof Music Hall sincehe first attended aconcert as a child. “Iremember hearingthe Blue DanubeWaltz for the firsttime then and I’vealways loved waltzes.In 1995 My wife andI attended theWCIN Radio Sta-tion’s 41st Anniversary Party inthe Music Hall Ballroom. Therewas a dance contest but we hadnot registered as contestants.

We are good dancers and, movedby the music we just got up onthe sidelines and began dancing.

After a while, themusic stopped andwell-known vocalist P.Ann Emerson-Pricepointed at me andsaid ‘sir, you havejust won a trip to theBahamas’.

When I am inthis Hall during theday, I can enjoy mylunch time whilewatching the great-est talents thereare. I have this

Music Hall and this concert all tomyself—how many people can saythat? I love my home.”

“Every day for 41 years, Ihave hung my coat on the coatrack with the treble clef in theCSO library. Then I pick up theorchestra folders and put them onthe music stands on the stage ofMusic Hall. And every day, just asI step onto the stage, I glance outinto Springer Auditorium and asense of awe of the beauty, his-tory, and grandeur ofthis concert hall over-whelms me! Truly…Icatch my breath eachday! What a magnifi-cent place to work! Mythree children, nowyoung adults, grew upas CSO kids and spenta lot of time at MusicHall. They enjoyedbeing backstage;meeting the artists; getting spe-cial backstage tours from ourstage managers and they are soproud that their Mom works atMusic Hall!

The CSO Library doors openonto the hallway that connectsthe dressing rooms and the stage.Sitting at my desk over the years,I have seen some very strangethings go by! I remember a timewhen Cincinnati Opera had an ele-phant, zebra, camel, horses andmonkeys walk across the stageduring Aida. As they approachedthe glass hallway door near the li-

brary, the zookeeper indicated tothe elephant to bend very low totry to squeeze through the door.They then proceeded down thehallway, out the backdoor, walkeddown Central Parkway to the 14thStreet loading dock, and onto thewaiting zoo trucks.

In 1981, Bob Dylan was per-forming at Music Hall. It was very

shortly after JohnLennon was killed, andBob was convincedthat someone was outto kill him too. Eventhough he has eightbody guards and hisdressing room was100 feet from thestage, he refused towalk. At curtain time,I heard a loud back-

firing sound and then Bob Dylancame roaring down the hallway ona huge motorcycle! He jumped offthe bike just feet from the stageand rushed onstage! The stage-hand who caught the bike turnedit around and, when the first halfwas almost over, revved it up…andsure enough, Bob jumped back onand roared back to his dressingroom, filling the backstage withexhaust and gas fumes.

In 1991 Erich Kunzel carriedtwo pot-bellied pigs named Porkieand Bess onstage during the Pops“Down on the Farm” concerts.

That sameyear, during concerts of TheMusic Man, Erich had a 100 pieceMarching Band march down theaisles of Music Hall, onto thestage, turn left, and then theymarched past my desk, out theback door, down the street, andback in the front doors of MusicHall for their encore.

But my favorite and mostmeaningful memory of Music Hallis not as a librarian, but as a com-poser. In 1995 during the Cincin-nati Symphony OrchestraCentennial, Music Director JesúsLópez-Cobos commissioned 23composers to each compose a fan-fare for this year-long celebra-tion. I was so honored to bechosen as one of the composers.My job as orchestra librarian is

always “behind the scenes”…butfor the performances of mypiece, I was given seats in theMusic Director’s Box. After theworld premiere of my “Fanfarefor a Celebration,” Maestro indi-cated for me to come onstage toaccept the applause. He thankedme, and presented me with a hugebouquet of flowers. And then Iheard the CSO—my CSO family—applauding also! Standing on themagnificent stage, looking out intothe beautiful auditorium filledwith CSO patrons, with the CSObehind me..it was one of thegreatest moments of my life. I amso excited to see our beautifulMusic Hall’s renovation, as it con-tinues to be one of Cincinnati’smagnificent jewels.”

“A special memory for me happened in the early days of SPMH. I was standing in Music Hall, by Judy Prinz’s desk, and Joyce Van Wye,a founder of SPMH, commented that Music Hall really should have, andneeded, a tall United States Flag pole for the entire community to see.I told Joyce that I was descended from an American Revolution pa-triot; was a member of the “Daughters of the Ameri-can Revolution” (D.A.R.) and that Don and I would behonored and proud to be allowed to make that dona-tion. In 1993, the pole was dedicated and the flag ofthe United States of America has waved majesticallyat Music Hall since then. I only hope it is still thereafter the renovation.

“Like many Cincinnatians, I canrecount coming to CSO Young Peo-ple’s Concerts with my elementaryschool class. As a child, I remem-ber being awed by The Nutcrackerat Music Hall and experiencingBizet’s spectacular opera Carmenfor the first time. The May Festi-val’s Carolfest afforded me a firstexperience “singing” at Music Hall,thanks to a CSOsubscription, Iwas exposed toa dazzling sonicpalette of or-chestral colorsstarting aroundage 10. It allhappened righthere at MusicHall.

As a younger adult, I had theprivilege to be my late grand-mother’s “date” for a CincinnatiPops television show taping, andattended a diverse array of per-formances with friends and family– everything from rock concertsto operas to orchestra perform-ances. I joined the May FestivalChorus in 1996 and really got tosing at Music Hall for the first of

many times. What a thrill!As a member of the CSO/May

Festival staff since 2001, I’vecome to know virtually every nookof this grand old building, experi-enced more performances than Ican easily count, stepped in to nar-rate a Young People’s Concert per-formance of Peter and the Wolfwith 10 minutes’ notice, and even

“tied the knot”with my beauti-ful wife in theGrand Foyerwhile A PrairieHome Compan-ion rehearsed inSpringer Audi-torium. (Theydid eventually“take a break”

so we could finish the ceremony.)The connection I feel with

Music Hall is palpable, and as wesay “so long for now” leading tothe Hall closing down in June, I’mconfident this amazing renovationand restoration will ensure thatmy son and his children and theirchildren will be able to create last-ing memories in this beautifulplace.” - Chris Pinelo

“I am soproud to bepart ofMusic Hall,having in-stalled theAlbeeMightyWurlitzer inthe Ball-room, and

taking care of the beast since 2007.Five days each week for thirteenmonths, I would enter the historicbuilding at 7 a.m., going through thegrand foyer, and always appreciatingthe grandeur and elegance, pre-served by our sensitive musical folksof past generations.

Going through Springer Audito-rium, thinking how wonderful this

space, with memories attending con-certs with my parents, special con-certs in grade school, and my highschool graduation in 1963, which in-cluded the great Austin pipe organ.The wonderful memorial programfor Erich Kunzel, seeing the dressrehearsal of Carmen, with my dearfriend Norma Petersen, as always“The Nutcracker” echoes in myhead, enjoyed with close friends.So this all leads me to the GrandBallroom, appointed with RKO AlbeeTheater artifacts, and time to startwork. As you may guess, what I cre-ated with the rebuilding and installa-tion of the Wurlitzer, was really notwork, but my small contribution toour beloved Music Hall.”

“So many of my memories involve my best friend,Robert Howes, who was a CSO violist, a board mem-ber of SPMH and an expert in the history and archi-tecture of Music Hall. We knew each other for 30years before he passed away in 2011. I rememberthe first time Bob took me backstage and showedme the library and the green room. I was young andfascinated, but after many years of accompanyingBob to CSO concerts, it began to feel like home.Bob knew every nook and cranny of Music Hall, and over the years, Ithink he showed them all to me. Having said that, I have one otherspecial memory of Music Hall that has nothing to do with the CSO. InFebruary, 1977, I went on a first date to a Barry Manilow concert. Mydate arranged for first row balcony seats! The relationship didn’t last,but the memory does.” - Kathy Grote

“I have climbed the steep lad-der to get an up close view of theinterior of the Rose Window;walked cautiously around the fit-tings, in the ceiling, of the Audito-rium’s great chandelier, seeing thered seats far below; lain on thefloor directly under that samechandelier, lowered for cleaning.

My favorite memory,however, is as Chairpersonof the Lollipops Volunteersin 1994. That year volun-teers distributed 132,000concert fliers to areaschools; packed thousandsof ‘goodie bags’ to give toall the children attending;worked on and hired pre-concert exhibits and entertain-ments; and decorated the hallgreeting all children coming andgoing. The concert theme chosenby Keith Lockhart, was “Green Lol-lipop” an environmental one, ex-ploring with the children ways topreserve our wonderful world. Itwas decided that there would be aposter contest to go along withthe three February and Marchperformances. Students in grades3, 4 and 5 throughout the Tri-State were eager to participateand individual schools submittedthe best poster from each class.On February 7th, Lollipops volun-teers picked up all posters whichended up on my living room floorwhere I spent hours attaching

them horizontally to multiples oftwo long lengths of 2 ½” green vel-vet ribbons. On the day of thefirst performance Anne Reid, PegLandwehr and I fastened theselong banners of posters to thebottoms of the lobby balcony rail-ings. When we had finished, what asight from the Lobby it was—so

many colorful banners! Thechildren came in excitedlylooking for their posterswith squeals of joy when achild spotted his! Mer-chants were quite gener-ous then, donating fabulousprizes for the 3 winners.The 1st place winner alsowas given a LaRosa’s pizza

party for the entire class! Theconcert was exciting, amusing andcreative, as Keith’s concerts al-ways were. At the end, as the chil-dren began leaving, volunteers saidgoodbyes with a treat stuffedgoodie bag for each. CSO Presi-dent, Steve Monder smiled andsaid ‘Kathy, you couldn’t pay me todo this.’ We put so many hours intothe poster project, into Lollipopsitself but it was so much fun.

We had the best volunteers;we had the best times together.And all of us won new little friendsfor Music Hall. I can still see thecheerful green velvet ribbonposter banners draped from therailings in the Lobby—it was a spe-cial time!” - Kathy Janson

“The date was April 2nd 1995, it was a Sunday night, every seat inthe Hall was taken, and it was the night of the CSO’s Centennial Gala Con-cert. My wife, Kathy, and I were fortunate enough to obtain front rowcenter seats and from that vantage point we could sense that all involvedknew this was a special evening. Of course the music was beautiful as thebaton was passed from Keith Lockhart, just named Conductor of BostonPops; to Michael Gielen, the CSO’s tenth Music Director; to Jesús López-Cobos, then in his 10th year as Music Director; to Erich Kunzel, who hadbeen leading the Pops since its 1977 formation. We also saw and heardthree world famous soloists that evening. Richard Stoltzman, ItzhakPerlman and Mstislav Rostropovich each took a turn performing with theCSO. The spectacular concert ended with Respighi’s The Pines of Rome.Following the concert we hurried back stage to get our programs signedby the conductors and guest artists. It was truly an unforgettableevening in Music Hall.” - Mike Janson

ership of our belovedMusic Hall. Now that theGrand Dame of ElmStreet will be closed forrenovation, I can’t getenough of being with her.I hate letting her go, evenfor 18 months. Long may

she stand as the elegant, imposingicon in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati,Ohio. We are so fortunate to haveMusic Hall in our lives.”

On May 12th Master of Cere-monies, Don Siekmann, pulled outall the stops for for ‘The GreatAmerican Songbook’, or the ‘So-Long-for-a-While’ con-cert. Featured artistswere theatre organistMark Herman (2012winner of the Ameri-can Theatre OrganSociety’s prestigioushonor ‘Theatre Organ-ist of the Year’), andEmmy Award winningsinger Nancy James.The show was a hitfrom the opening “TopHat, White Tie andTails” to the stirringrendition of “God Bless America”,both written by Irving Berlin. Otherselections included “My FunnyValentine”, and tunes from theBroadway Show Peter Pan – onecould almost see Mary Martin soar-

ing overhead! As Herman workedmagic with the Mighty Wurlitzer, theside screens showed clips from thefamous Gene Kelley scenes in Sin-

gin’ in the Rain, and Judy Garland’s“Trolley Song” from Meet me in St.Louis. Herman wrote a song abouthis Airedale terrier named Jarvisand during the playing of “Jarvis” itwas as if the spunky little dog had

Don recognized RonWehmeier several times for his ge-nius in re-building, installing andcaring for this most magnificent ofTheater Organs. He thanked theartists, the guests, the staff andtechnicians who have assisted in

all aspects of production. Presi-dent Peter Koenig thanked Don.When the final bows were taken,the applause was thunderous. Andof all the entertainers who haveperformed over the twelve concertssince the very beginning, no one ismore deserving of that applausethan ‘Master of Ceremonies’ DonSiekmann! Next concert is plannedfor winter 2017—So-Long-for-aWhile!

A native of Cincinnati, Ohioand a painter as profession formore than 30 years, Ms. Hon-schopp was graduated with honorsfrom the Art Acad-emy of Cincinnati,and is consideredthe favorite in southwestern Ohio for herpaintings of Cincin-nati. Married to Jazzbassist LouLausche, music haslong influenced herlife and work.

Joanne's workwas honored at theEvansville Art Mu-seum's "Realism inArt" Exhibition andshe has been invited to exhibit inMichigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ken-tucky, Tennessee, California andFlorida.
