Wed 4 Nov St Charles Borromeo, B Philippians 2:12-18; Psalm 27; Luke 14:25-33 Jesus carried a heavy wooden cross, but internally he must have carried a much heavier one – a daily mental, emotional and psychological cross. Tue 3 Nov (St Martin de Porres, R) Philippians 2:5-11; Psalm 22; Luke 14:15-24 Silence can teach you to let go of your inner clut- ter – the noise and chatter in you head – and find beneath it a space of quiet and stillness, a place where you know you are not alone. T he Solemnity of All Saints is a wonderful opportunity for us to explore an oft glossed- over item of the Creed. Perhaps it is glossed over because it comes at the end, when our attention may have started wavering? We say: “[I believe in] the communion of saints.” Let’s put it in the context of the full sentence because each item informs the other: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of Sins, the Resurrection of the Body and Life Everlasting. First, the Holy Spirit, the “sanctifier”. Only the Holy Spirit can make us saints. Holiness is not the product of a solo effort to be good. As Jesus said, “no one is good but God alone.” To be sanctified is the work of the Holy Spirit drawing us into the very holiness of God. From the Holy Spirit, we declare our faith in the Church. While it’s true the Eucharistic prayer acknowledges “those whose faith is known to God alone”, Christians profess salvation in following Jesus as members of the Church which he founded. Paul often addressed the various Christian Churches as “the saints”? Yes, ordinary people like us – and sinners too – called saints, sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit through baptism, Eucharist, “the forgiveness of sins” (also an item in the Creed), the Word of God, Christian charity and works of mercy. The community of the Church to which we belong is a continuity of living members with those who have died into eternity. This is sometimes depicted as the communion of Church “Pilgrim” and Church “Triumphant”. But it is still one Church. This is where Communion of Saints comes into its own. We are accompanied by the prayers and intercessions of those who have gone before us. We can, and must, call on them to inspire us by their triumph in Christ over the power of evil; to walk with us on our pilgrim way as we struggle through the vicissitudes of life on earth. Consider this. We all have ancestors (parents maybe, grandparents and others) who went through the virus pandemic of 1918- 1919. Some may have died during it. By remembering and calling on them, we are given hope. As the Letter to the Hebrews (12:1) declares, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” It’s good to know we are not alone. Others have been through what we go through. Finally, in the Creed we say: I believe in the Resurrection of the body and Life Everlasting. The Communion of Saints is ultimately a participation in the great mystery of faith, which is the Life, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ. Christ is the Bridegroom – the Church is the Bride (John 3; Ephesians 5; Revelations 21 etc.). Christ is the first to be raised from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:20). Christ is the head of the Church which is his Body (Colossians 1:18). We believe in the Communion of Saints. Ask yourself today, how can I live that faith more consciously? How can it inspire hope? Is it really possible for an ordinary person like me to find God in all things? Am I really important to God? How can I be sure that God really loves me? How can I become more aware of God’s presence in my life? How can I escape from the broken dreams of my past and draw closer to God? Fr Brian Grogan SJ meets these challenges by writing an extraordinary book for ordinary people. In simple, clear language he shows how God is involved in all the details of our lives. “God does not blush easily at our faults,” he writes. “In failure or in success, every individual remains uniquely important to God. He waits for us, searches for us, and cares for us.”

REFLECTION: Feast of All Saints

Who is a Saint ?

The Apostles Creed speaks of the 'Communion of Saints' in Heaven, on Earth, and in Purgatory - those who've been sanctified to a greater or lesser degree by the blood of Christ.

We in fact are 'saints' and must pray for other saints no matter where they are.

As St. Paul says " the life and death of each of us influences the others. None of us can live for himself or herself alone."

Richard.
