Although the Art Gallery ofOntario has exhibited photographssince 1917 with major monographicexhibits mounted in 1935 and 1938-39, the practice came to a halt duringWorld War II. In the 1970s the medi-um underwent a revitalization as anobject of interest with market value.

Speaker, Maia Sutnik, on joiningAGO in the mid 1960s, noticed thelack of photographs in the gallery’scollection and has worked diligently toreestablish recognition for the photo-graphic media. Today, Maia followsthe photography market closely,building the AGO collection throughdonations and savvy buying since lit-tle money is available for photo-graphic acquisitions. Sought afterhistorical photographs now fetch anaverage of 8 to 10 thousand dollarsUS - while last year Steichen’s"The Pond -- Moonlight" (1904)went for 2.9 million dollars US.

In 1974 the AGO acquired theHenry Moore collection; it includedsculptures, paintings, drawings ANDphotographs. The photos were ofMoore and his sculptures taken bymany well known photographers.

Maia initially collected portraits ofartists by recognized photographerssuch as Arnold Newman's HenryMoore collage c1966; Cecil Beaton'sc1950 portrait of Moore; a pho-togravure of Matisse by Steichen; avintage George Platt Lynes portraitof Yves Tanguy - a French surrealistartist; and Picasso photographed byBrassai, c1925.

After introducing us to the AGOMaia presented a wonderful selec-tion of slides depicting some of theAGO holdings. As each slide poppedup, she commented on the artist,sometimes the model, the signifi-cance of the image, its history, andits journey to the AGO. Here are acouple of stories:

Frederick H Evans was famousfor his platinum prints. During thelate 1920s and 30s in London, he

shared an enthusiasm for pianolapianos with a Canadian by the nameof Gordon Conn. The friendshipresulted in the Conns receiving giftsof Evans prints. Back in Toronto,years later, Conn and his wife Rheta

offered the prints to the AGO.Unfortunately it was a time when theAGO did not collect photographs sothe offer was refused and the printswent to George Eastman House inRochester, NY. Years later, RitaConn offered to donate some of theprints she had kept back -- one beinga portrait of Aubrey Beardsley takenc1895. Times had changed and thistime the donation was gratefullyreceived by the AGO. The AGO later

mounted an Exhibition of FrederickEvans's magnificent prints ofKelmscott Manor (the home of WilliamMorris) but (ironically) had to borrowthem from George Eastman House.

The AGO has in its collectionover 140 M O Hammond printsdonated by the photographer'sgrandson. Hammond, from Toronto,was a journalist and a writer. He helda number of jobs over the yearsincluding various editorial positionsat the Toronto Globe (now part of theGlobe and Mail). He had a life longinterest in politics and the arts and isbest remembered for his pho-tographs. A self taught amateur pho-tographer and a beautiful print-maker, M O Hammond was a mem-ber of the Toronto Camera Club. Hisphotographs were displayed in manyexhibitions of the day -- and he oftenused them to illustrate his newspa-per articles. A memorial exhibitionwas held at the AGO in 1935.

The last images shown were byJosef Sudek, Czechoslovakia’s mostfamous photographer of the 20thcentury. In 2000, an anonymousdonor gave the AGO a major gift of975 Sudek images, spanning thephotographer's working life. Therange of images in this gift gave theAGO its first opportunity to assessthe working life of a famous photog-rapher.

In the current collecting sceneMaia Sutnik says the excitement ofphotography prevails. ❧

by Gary FoxToday, you can drop into a drug-

store and buy an accurate wristwatchfor less than $20. Watches are soinexpensive that when they do stopworking, you just toss them into adrawer and simply buy another one.

That was not the case in the late19th Century. While the productionof watches had grown by leapsand bounds, due to evolvingtechniques of mass produc-tion, watches were stillexpensive. A simple 7-jewel watch might cost acouple of week’s wagesbut a better grade time-piece could take amonth or more ofincome. So when anold watch stopped,there was no alterna-tive but to resort torepairing it.

In the late 19thCentury, watch repairwas a risky proposi-tion for the watchowner. Too often thetime-piece wasreturned in a worsecondition than whenit was dropped off.The problem wasthat while the pro-duction of watcheshad dramaticallyincreased, qualifiedtradesmen able todiagnose the problems and quicklyfix them, had not kept pace. In partic-ular, incompetent watchmakers werecommonplace.

Canada was impacted as much asthe USA and Europe with these prob-lems. Apprenticeships took manyyears to produce workers who were atbest mechanically sound but technicallylacking. Watchmaker schools wereopening throughout the US and Europe,but Canada – lacking a watch-manufac-turing industry, also had no watchmakerschools to address the issue.

After careful consideration andmuch prodding by fellow watchmakers,Henry Playtner, a Canadian ofGerman descent and a highly respect-ed watch maker, decided to open TheCanadian Horological Institute to train

bright young men in the art of fixingwatches. Playtner didn’t want to just“turn out” good mechanics; he wantedto produce graduates who understoodhow a watch really worked – how eachpart reacted with the next to make themechanical device tell time. His coursewas a minimum of two years for stu-

dents with no experi-ence. To gradu-

ate, the stu-dent had

to pass an exam provided by local mas-ter watchmakers, and he had to makehis own watch from raw materials!

Playtner opened his school inToronto in 1890 at 133 King StreetEast – the success of the school wasimmediate. Although he started withtwo students in 1890 after two yearshe had 19. Over the 23 year life of theschool the number of students rose toan average of over 30 per year. In1895, Playtner moved his school downthe road to the Oak Hall Building at115 King St E. But with an ever-grow-ing student enrollment, he finally builthis own school on the corner ofChurch and Wellesley. He moved tothat purpose-built school in 1907. Theschool was a great success – his stu-dents won awards in internationalcompetitions and, in one case, swept

the top three prizes. His reputationwas established and the Institute drewat least half his students from the USand Europe. Playtner’s book TheAnalysis of the Lever Escapement isstill in print today.

In 1913, Playtner finally closed hisschool. He was ill and possibly wor-ried about the threatening war inEurope - given his German heritage.With the closing of the school, allrecords simply disappeared. Playtnerkept nothing. There is no list of stu-dents, no course texts, no sampleexams, and the masterpiece watchesof the students have disappeared.Many are still with families but mostare in the possession of watch collec-tors in the USA. While the collectorsknow the true value of these watches

and how unique they are, most of the families have littleidea of their importance to the history of horology and thehistory of Canada.

I am a watch collector andan amateur historian. I am writ-ing a book about The CanadianHorological Institute, HenryPlaytner and his students.

Finding information has been tough but surprisingly, muchhas become evident through pictures. Playtner had classpictures taken each year. He had photographs taken of thewatch movements made by his students and pictures of hisclassrooms. He used these photos extensively in advertis-

ing. Images found to date have been taken by FrankMicklethwaite and The Farmer Bros. studios in Toronto.

I am seeking help in locat-ing class pictures from theschool; pictures of the master-piece watch movements; andany other related photos. Iown one original class picturefrom 1892, and scans of origi-nals from 1908-09, 1909-10and 1910-11. Through thenames included with the pho-tographs, I have been able toidentify over 150 students todate and have tracked downsome of the family-ownedmasterpieces through thesenames. I would like original orscanned copies of the classpictures from any other yearfrom 1890 to 1913. I havescanned watch movements

from period trade journals, but the scanning of screenedimages makes details unreadable.

Sean Hickey of Devon, England requestsassistance in finding the name of an unknownphotographer. Some 30 years ago he pur-chased at auction a sizeable collection of 500negatives that must have been exposed in thelate 1920s. One of the cut-film boxes has anexpirery date of June 1931. Most views are ofUK tourist locations and cities of which the qual-ity seems to indicate to Sean that they weredone by a professional photographer.

One box marked “Montreal” contains 32negatives (5x7 in.) of Montreal and Ottawa.We show seven examples from that box.

Mr. Hickey wonders if readers might haveseen any of these sample images reproduced in books, mag-azines or as post cards. It is a slim chance but it might identi-fy the photographer this way.Write the editor if you have news.

I purchased this gem at one of our PHSC shows aboutthree years ago from one of the dealers who is not a regu-lar. I queried him what he knew about the maker or the ori-gin of the set-up, but sadly he had no recollection. Perhapsthis article will prod a member's memory and come forthwith its provenance. All-in-all, its quite a neat item and agreat conversation piece.

When I first saw it, it looked weird – and still does: oneof the cameras sits up-side-down conveniently to accessthe shutter lever and film advancement knob. I knew imme-diately what it was or trying to be, and I also realized thatsomebody had put serious thought into putting it together.After all, it combines two relatively simple Kodak BrownieTarget Six-20 cameras that, because of their standard fac-tory-issued design, lent themselves perfectly to adaptationto stereo-photography – with a bit of fiddling. The thing alsois a bizarre visual combination: the rigidly-angled camerasalong with some bits of workshop scraps, and a piece thatseems to be hand-carved to accommodate a viewfinderopening at thefront.

I did note acouple of neatideas incorporat-ed into the design:the spring-loadeds y n c h r o n i z e d -shut ter - re leasemechanism is bril-liantly simple, butaccurate and reli-able; and the “U”shaped bit ofmetal that servesas a lock to theshutter releasewhen flipped up toprevent accidentalexposure; thenicely engineeredcutouts for camerastrap and the topviewfinder win-dow, and the nice-ly formed metalshutter releasearmatures.

But there is one curious thing that stumps me: thecurled brass tube-like piece on the top – its use is stillunfathomable. Perhaps it is a cigar holder, a retainerfor an extra roll of film or maybe its a flash holder.

If the original builder would contact me, we can allhave our curiosity satisfied. ❧

The Memories of Kodak HeightsEastman Kodak and its entities have undergone a swift change by switching its core industry to the digital age.Here we follow the changes wrought at the Canadian property in north-west Toronto known as Kodak Heights.

This aerial photograph by John Narvali of Toronto, looking north, shows the Canadian Kodak property at its height of expansion.

Possibly one of the earliest photographs to show the hills of Mount Dennis wherethe new Kodak facilities were to be located, is this 1913 panorama view withJohn G. Palmer, President Canadian Kodak, Frank Lovejoy, (holding a KodakPanoram camera) General Manager Eastman Kodak, and (likely) E.A.Woodworth. They are seen on a bridge in the the lower valley over Black Creekwhich might be the precursor to the present Eglinton Avenue.

The construction at Kodak Heights began in1914 with steam-powered shovels and horse-drawn wagons performing the labours to pre-pare the basements for the first buildings.

The Canadian Kodak Co.received its charter on Nov. 3, 1899with offices in downtown Toronto. By1902 it outgrew the Colborne St,location and moved to a four storeybuilding on King Street West nearPortland. A second and third buildingwere added but crowded conditionscontinued with staff reaching 400.

It was deemed imperative to finda location which once-and-for-allwould resolve any future expansionproblems. The site chosen was 25acres of rolling farmland at MountDennis in the distant north-west ofToronto. An additional 23 acres wasacquired later; this became knownas Kodak Heights.

Construction started in 1914 onseven buildings – it would eventuallyexpand to fourteen. But before build-ing #5 could be put into service itwas requisitioned for WW I servicesas a barracks to house the 127thOverseas Battalion of the CanadianOverseas Force.

In 1915 the Canadian facilitiesstarted making photographic emul-sions to coat B&W papers. At thestart of WW II a special coatingmachine, destined for Kodak-Pathein France, was diverted to Canadawhen France was invaded. The

Canadian plant becamea world leader in papercoating proving theycould economicallydeliver the best product

to any Kodak market world-wide.They continued with this honour rightup to plastic coated papers for digitalinkjet printers.

Clearing of the land has contin-

ued throughout the summer, slowlywiping away history. Building #9which housed a gym, theater, cafete-ria and darkrooms will be preservedas an historic site.

building were still visible in May,• the giant block that formerlydominated the horizon as KodakCanada is erased from thescene, • the main manufacturingbuilding #13 is slowly dissected.

The PHSC Executive remindmembers and photo students thatsubmissions will be considered forthe annual awarding of grants for theresearch of Canadian photographichistory.

For photography students thereis an annual award of $500 for thebest essay or monograph on anyaspect of Canadian photographichistory. There is a runner-up awardof $250.

For current PHSC members a$500 grant can be awarded annuallyfor original research into Canadianphotographic history. In additionthere is a grant of up to $1000 to amember of the PHSC to aid in thepublication or original research intoCanada’s photographic history inbook or monograph form.

PETER E. PALMQUIST MEMORIAL FUNDFOR HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH

Submission applications arebeing requested for the Peter E.Palmquist Memorial Fund forHistorical Photographic Research.This year's grant application dead-line is October 15, 2007. Awards willvary from $400 to $1000.

Peter Eric Palmquist, consideredone of the most important photohis-torians of the 20th century, waskilled by a hit and run driver in 2003,at the age of 66. A professional pho-tographer for more than 50 years,his research emphasis was theAmerican West and the history ofwomen in photography worldwide.He published over 60 books and 340articles. With co-author ThomasKailbourn, he won the CarolineBancroft Western History Prize fortheir book, Pioneer Photographersof the Far West.

Preference will be given to inde-pendent researchers. An indepen-dent researcher is someone whocontrols his or her own researchprojects, intellectually and financial-ly. The person can be a freelancer oraffiliated with a university or otherinstitution, but can not be conduct-ing research under the supervisionor direction of another person orentity, either as a trainee, a post-doctoral fellow, or as a researchassistant or associate. Nonprofitinstitutions with a focus on women inphotography or Western Americanphotography before 1900 may alsoapply for support.

Write a short statement explainingyour study of either:–Under-researched women photogra-phers internationally, past and present–Under-researched WesternAmerican photographers before 19003. Statement must be double spaced,1-inch margins, 12-point font and nomore than 1,250 words. Statementmust describe how funds will beused. Include a budget4. Include resume or curriculum vitae.

Applicants will be evaluated ontheir articulation of statement andpassion for the proposed researchproject. No other materials (addition-al samples of work etc.) will be con-sidered - please enclose only theitems listed above.
