• So we definitely need to check to see if they did their FAFSA before we start their overview.

Page 29: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS• What are we looking for in NSLDS?• Pell Overpayments

• An overpayment occurs when a student receives more aid than he/she was eligible to receive.

• This can occur when they received full time pell but did not attend full time classes

• The student would need to call the school to resolve. They may need to pay back the overpayment.

• In order to receive financial aid they will need to resolve this overpayment issue

Page 30: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS• What a Pell Overpayment would look like in

NSLDS.

Page 31: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS• What are we looking for in NSLDS?• Status of Previous Loans

• NSLDS Loan Status Codes• (insert 14-15 Status Codes)

Page 32: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS

• Every loan in NSLDS will have a status code. Some codes will not allow students to receive financial aid until they are fixed.

Page 33: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS• What are we looking for in NSLDS?• Default – One of those codes that prevents students

from getting anymore financial aid is DF – Default, Unresolved.

• There will be a warning at the top of the page.

Page 34: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – NSLDS• What if a student has a default code?• How should we handle?• Talk to the student to see if they are aware• Maybe they have a clearance letter, NSLDS isn’t

updated yet• If they are in default work with them on their options

• Loan Repayment – Pay the defaulted loan in full• Loan Rehabilitation – Make consecutive payments,

the number is determined by the loan servicer, to put them in good grace again

• Loan Consolidation – A process that will combine all of their loans into one loan.

Page 35: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep - COD• Why would we look at both COD and NSLDS?

Don’t they give us the same information?

Page 36: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep - COD

• No – COD tends to be more accurate and current.

• What should we be looking for in COD?

Page 37: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep - COD• Pending disbursements at the other school.

• If another school has pending money, we cannot get that money at our school. The disbursement must be canceled at that school.

Page 38: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep - COD• Overlapping Academic Years• If a student has recently gone to another school and

their academic year overlaps into when the student will start school with us, this can make them eligible for less money with us.

• In the next course you will learn how to do this calculation, but for now you need to know how to identify an overlapping situation and take to a senior FAO to see if this is going to be an issue for the student.

Page 39: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep - COD

• Overlapping Academic Years – You will look to see when the start and end date is. If they are starting with us any time during that range, you have an overlapping situation.

Page 40: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – Selective Service• Check Selective Service on all male students.• www.sss.gov

Page 41: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – Selective Service• Enter the student’s information:

• If they are not registered Sorry will be displayed:

Page 42: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – Selective Service• What if they are not registered?

• Do you go and advise admissions to cancel them?

•NO

Page 43: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Prep – Selective Service

•You will need to talk to the student during the overview to find out why they did not register and advise them of the documentation that will be needed.

Page 44: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Greeting the Student

Page 45: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Greeting• How should you greet the student? What should

you say?

Page 46: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Greeting• Make eye contact• Smile• Welcome them to Keiser University• Introduce yourself• Re-assure them you are there to help them• Make it specific to that student• Talk to them about their major• Reference anything the Admissions Counselor told

you about them

• Remember they are excited, they just made a major life decision – keep that enthusiasm going

Page 47: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Purpose of your Meeting – Explain

the FA process

Page 48: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Purpose• Once you greet the student you need to give

them a brief overview of what you will be doing with them today.

• Remember this is their first time going through this process and they have no idea what is about to happen.

• How should we explain this in a short, concise sentence?

Page 49: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Purpose• “What we are going to do today is start by going

through a few questions to determine if you are considered a dependent or independent student for Financial Aid purposes. We will also go over some items you will need to complete before your Financial Aid appointment and lastly we will set up a time for you to come back for that appointment. When you come back we will go over everything you are eligible for and come up with a plan on how you will pay for your education. That appointment will take about an hour and a half. We are going to help you through all of this.”

Page 50: 1 overview prep greet purpose

Activity• You will be greeting an imaginary student. I would

like you to say your greeting and explain the purpose of the overview to that student.
