Introduction

Kurunjang Secondary College provides a rigorous and comprehensive range of core

subjects, and has a choice of numerous semester based electives to develop skills

and knowledge in areas of interest and strength.

Year 10 Curriculum Structure All Year 10 students complete a range of studies in core and elective subjects. The

core subjects are English, Humanities, Mathematics, and Science.

In addition, students choose six semester based electives. The electives students

choose must reflect a career pathway, interests, and skills after careful consideration

and discussion with a course counsellor. The electives subjects provided are those

that will assist students to specialise in particular studies for VCE and VCAL/VET.

Preferences for electives must be considered carefully, especially second and third

preferences as students cannot be ensured of their first choice.

It is important to note that Year 10 students may begin part of a VCE and or VET

course. The VCE subject or VET course will take up the place of two semester

based electives.

There is an additional permission process for those wanting to pursue a VCE or VET

course during Year 10.

Details of the VCE subjects and VET courses are provided in separate handbooks

and students must speak with the VCE and VCAL Co-ordinators about possible

choices.

Students undertaking a VCE or VET course in Year 10 will be placed in a Year 11

class for the subject/course.

Please note that all elective choice forms must be submitted by the

due dates, including any VCE or VET selection forms. Failure to do

so may prevent the allocation of initial choices.

Core Subjects

English (full year)

Students will hone their skills in the detailed study of various texts, while focusing in

written communication and oracy. All tasks are designed to consider purpose and

audience. Students will also learn to respond critically to issues presented in the

media.

Students will develop a folio of written pieces with evidence of the key elements of

the writing process.

Students will read assigned texts and undertake written tasks that reflect their

knowledge and analysis of the key themes and issues presented by the authors.

Students will explore a range of current media issues and develop an understanding

of how writers use language to position and persuade readers. Students will use a

current issue to analyse and respond in a detailed piece of writing.

Students will also study a film as text and use similar skills and strategies to analyse

key themes and issues presented by the film maker.

In addition, students will maintain a workbook which will contain detailed, and

organised notes during the study process. It will also contain all learning tasks

assigned by teachers, as well as evidence of the writing process that includes drafts.

Science (one semester)

Students have the option to take the core Science subject in Semester One or Semester Two to allow for flexibility with elective choices.

Students will develop key knowledge and skill in understanding the value of scientific enquiry, science as technology, science and society, the applications of science in everyday life, people at work in science, and exploring science as a human activity. Areas of study will include, Biology – Genetics, Chemistry – Chemical Patterns and Reactions, Physics – Forces, Energy, and Motion.

Students will complete experiments, practical reports, research assignments, topic tests, and an end of semester exam.

Mathematics (full year)

Students will develop their mathematical knowledge and skills in the three streams offered at Year 10.

Foundation Maths will provide students with skills useful for daily life and those who do not require mathematics for their chosen pathway. Topics covered are data analysis, statistics, budgeting, banking, measurement, and geometry.

Mainstream Mathematics will prepare students for VCE General Mathematics. Topics covered are Pythagoras’ Theorem, trigonometry, linear equations, statistics, simultaneous equations, business mathematics, and networks.

Enhanced Mathematics will prepare student for VCE Mathematical Methods and Further Mathematics. Topics covered are Pythagoras’ Theorem, trigonometry, linear algebra, surds, simultaneous equations, indices, quadratic functions, and circular functions.

Students will be allocated to a particular stream based on year 9 exam results, performance in the NAPLAN, and other assessments. Individual teacher feedback and recommendations will also determine suitability for any one stream.

An opportunity for students to move between the streams will be available in consultation with the Numeracy Leader, Maths Teacher, and progress made during the terms.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills through Learning Tasks, unit tests, assignments, projects, and exams at the end of each semester.

Humanities (one semester)

Students have the option to take the core Humanities subject in Semester One or Semester Two to allow for flexibility with elective choices.

This subject builds upon students’ knowledge and skills in understanding the past and present in order to make decisions about the future.

The range of topics in Humanities are, World War 1, Human Rights, Adolf Hitler and the lead up to World War II, Global Warming and Climate Change, Power and Politics, with a focus on world issues of terrorism, asylum seekers, global famine and foreign aid, government censorship, and human rights.

Students will undertake research assignments, Learning Tasks, collaborative group work, field work, note taking, topic tests, and an end of semester exam.

Year 10 Electives 2019

AVID: Preparation for VCE & Beyond (Full year elective)

Course description

The AVID elective provides students with an opportunity to develop and enhance the academic skills required of VCE subjects, and later in universities and the workforce. Students will focus on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation, and Reading (WICOR). These will be further supported by academic note taking, presentations, tutorials and excursions to universities all of which, will better prepare students for future success.

The Year 10 AVID Elective is designed to support students who take a VCE subject in Year 10 by offering academic skills building and tutorials to support the demands of a VCE subject.

Students will undertake the Essential Academic Skills for University Readiness curriculum. This will also support students in planning for and investigating future academic pathways.

Assessment will be based on the students’ application of the WICOR strategies as well as, assignments, management of an academic study binder, presentations, note taking, and excursions to universities to investigate university life.

Literature (One semester elective)

Course description

“The more that you READ, The more things you will KNOW, The more that you LEARN, The more places you’ll GO.” Dr Seuss.

Students will develop the valuable skills associated with the close reading of texts by learning the techniques writers, poets, directors, and playwrights use in their craft.

Students will analyse a variety of genres and use these as an inspiration for their own creative writing.

This elective is for those who are passionate, voracious readers and writers; for those who cannot and will not put a book down!

This elective will not only support and enhance your understanding of texts but also prepare you for VCE English and VCE Literature.

Straya Mate! (One semester elective)

Course description

Did you know that Charles Perkins, who went on to play soccer for Everton, was born at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station Aboriginal Reserve? That he would be the first indigenous person to graduate form an Australian University? That he would spend the rest of his life fighting against injustice?

Were you are aware that the world’s first full-length feature film was made in Australia in 1906? It was called The Story of the Kelly Gang.

What about the fact that Australian shows such as Neighbours and Home and Away, combined, have aired over 12,000 episodes in countries such as Iceland and Kenya?

Did you know that in 2017, the film and TV industry in Australia contributed 3 billion dollars to the Australian economy? That is a whole lot of pies and lamingtons!

Australia has an extraordinary history. There are dark, and shameful moments that we cannot ignore. Yet, there are moments for which we should be bursting with joy and pride.

Discover all this and more in Straya Mate. Students will explore the Aboriginal Rights Movement, The Stolen Generation, Indigenous protests, the impact of the US Civil Rights Movement in Australia, and its significant heroes.

Students will also study Australian Popular Culture through the birth of Australian TV and film, music, films, and sports. Significant people and events such as Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, Muriel’s Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and AC/DC.

If you are keen to study History in VCE, then it is recommended you take this elective.

Assessment will be based on Learning Tasks, class activities and assignments, as well as an end of semester exam.

Get Rich or Die Tryin’! (One semester elective)

Course description

Fact – Netflix was started in a garage by Reed Hasting partly out of frustration when he received an overdue fine for a rental film from a local Blockbuster Video Store. Remember them? No? Well, moving right along, Netflix is estimated to be worth a staggering 141.9 billion dollars!

Does this sound like something you want to do? A ‘start-up’ business from your own garage? Well, consider this elective to steer you in the right direction for key skills and know-how.

Students will explore the nature of small enterprises and gain an overview of how a small business is managed.

Students will study the public and private business sectors, and learn the essentials such as, business planning, marketing, advertising, risk management, and the importance of keeping accurate financial records.

This elective is suitable for students considering a future in small business, and VCE Business Management.

Students will be assessed through Learning Tasks, class activities, assignments, note taking, and an end of semester exam.

Dollar, Dollar Bill Y’all! (One semester elective)

Course description

A successful business requires effective marketing and promotion. In 2018, a New Zealand Brewery paid out a prize of $50,000 to a university student who took a one handed catch of a ball sent flying through the crowd as part of a competition during a cricket game. The catch? Only fans wearing orange t-shirts provided by the brewery were eligible. How many people were wearing those orange t-shirts that evening? How many people viewed that event on TV and other media? How many people recognised the brewery after that? That was a successful business plan!

All businesses need an effective business plan to be successful and remain relevant.

Here’s a story of a business that failed to change and remain relevant. In 1962, Kodak was worth more than 1 billion dollars. That is over 825 billion dollars in today’s money!

In 1975, Kodak invented the digital camera but never launched it. Senior Executives were worried about their ‘business plan’, fearing the digital camera would hurt the performance of their non-digital camera devices. Well, Kodak went bust in 2012!

This elective will develop students’ entrepreneurial, marketing, and promotional skills in creating a successful business for the future.

You Have the Right To… (One semester elective)

Course description

Did you know that you don’t have to give your name and address to police officers, if asked, unless, they have a reasonable belief you have committed an offence (or are about to)?

Did you know that you can ask for the name, rank, and the police station and officer works at and that they are required to provide those details?

The aim of this elective is to provide students an opportunity to explore the law, the legal system, and learn about rights and responsibilities with the legal system.

So, take this elective if you want more handy legal tips and are interested in pursuing a career in the legal field. The course will cover such topics as, the individual and the law, law and enforcement, laws in operation, and mock court trials.

Students who are keen to study VCE Legal Studies are encouraged to take this elective.

Make Australia Great Again! (One semester elective)

Course description

Fact- there are over 45 parties currently registered in Australia. You can vote for the Cyclist Party, the Science Party, the Animal Justice Party, or you can even vote for the Pirate Party (not the sea pirates but those who want to be able to illegally download content for free!)

If none of these appeal to you, you could seriously start your own party – for $500! What would it be?

Oh, and don’t forget to vote once you turn 18! It is against the law not to vote!

Too much? This elective will help you navigate the Australian political landscape with an introduction to Political Studies.

Topics that will be covered are, the structure of the Australian political system, the role of political parties, the development of government policy, and the investigation of current political affairs and events, both locally, nationally, and internationally.

It is recommended that students wanting to study VCE Politics undertake this elective.

Assessment will be based on Learning Tasks, class activities, and an end of semester exam.

Surf and Turf (One semester elective)

Course description

Did you know that Australia’s coastline has over 10,000 beaches (more than any country in the world? If you were to visit a new beach in Australia every day, it would take you over 27 years! That’s a whole lot of sand!

Discover what forces shaped these beaches and the coast. How can we preserve them to ensure everyone can enjoy them in the future?

Did you know that Australia is one of the world’s most urbanised countries in the world? With over 80% of the population living in cities of 50,000 or more? This has caused some problems.

How can we ensure we have enough resources to go around? What is the impact of urbanisation and unemployment?

To discover the answers to these geographical problems and more, select this elective. The topics covered are, coastal landforms, beaches, and the power of the wind and waves, the impact of humans on coasts and beaches, human environments and the growth of cities, and Melbourne’s future.

It is recommended that students wanting to study VCE Geography undertake this elective.

Assessment will be based on Learning Tasks, class activities, field observations, reports, and an end of semester exam.

Think Your Way Out of School (One semester elective)

Course description

How do you know what is right or wrong? Students in this elective will explore their sense of identity, test their boundaries, and gain an understanding of their potential, and place in the world.

Philosophy can assist students’ academic and personal development during times of change and growth.

Philosophy helps students to understand the universe and their place in it; it offers a rational approach to ethical decision making; helps to think critically and engage intellectually; it encourages the use of precise language and careful reasoning; it builds confidence and supports wise judgment; it also has highly transferable skills and attributes that can be applied to a range of career options.

Topics covered include, an introduction to philosophical method, moral language, ethical theories, and applied ethics with real life case studies.

Philosophy complements a range of other VCE subjects such as, Philosophy, History, English, Business Management, Legal studies, and Psychology.

Assessment will be based on Learning Tasks, case studies, and an end of semester exam.

Family, Gender, and Big Brother (One semester elective)

Course description Are you that there are currently 38,845 people in Australian prisons? They outnumber the correctional officers by a long margin. So why don’t the prisoners take over the prisons? The answer is Sociology!

Sociology is the study of society and how humans interact with each other.

Topics include, the family and household – why are fathers considered the head of the family? What is the role of the mother? Does the stereotypical family still exist?

What about gender roles? Why is it said that women can multitask and men can’t? Is it the man’s job to take out the rubbish? Why do men and women have different roles?

Does electronic surveillance keep us safe? Does it stop shoplifting and other crimes?

Students interested in studying VCE Psychology or Sociology are recommended to take this subject.

Assessment will be based on Learning Tasks, filed observations, reports, and an end of semester exam.

Writing Video Games (One semester elective)

Course description This course covers the topics of Loops, Conditionals, and the Design Process for the production of a video game or application.

These skills will be utilised to design your own video game.

Students will use programs such as Scratch and App. Lab.

They will also be introduced to the basics of text based programming.

Mathematics Extension (One semester elective)

Course description

The aim of this course is to give students a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in preparation for VCE Maths Methods.

The elective will also build skills in, CAS Calculator, Indices and Logarithms, Algebra, Applied Trigonometry, Geometric Reasoning, Matrices, Linear and Non-Linear Graphs.

Assessment will be based on assignments, tests application and analysis tasks, as well as an end of semester exam.

Maths and Technology (One semester elective)

Course description

This elective is for all students who want to find some authentic applications for maths and technology. This course will be project based as opposed to test based. Students will learn and explore skills with the programs, practise those skills, and then carry out a project for submission. Students will predominantly use computers.

The course will cover, coding, event planning using Microsoft Excel, statistical analysis, geogebra and geogebra tube, and financial mathematics.

Students who want to study VCE Further Maths are encouraged to undertake this elective.

Assessment will be based on the use of Excel spreadsheets, an interactive geogebra worksheet, statistical analysis and a project/test related to coding. An end of semester exam will also take place.

Biology (One semester elective)

Course description

Biology is a branch of science concerned with the study of living things or organisms. Students will explore questions such as what is life. What does it mean to be alive? You are alive, the lizard in the tank is alive, and so are our pets. What about the rain? The Snow falling? Are they alive? How about a wooden chair? It isn’t alive but what it is made from once was.

These questions are the crux of biology. Students will learn about the properties that define life, learn about the nervous system, and other systems of the body. Students will study natural selection and evolution.

Students who want to study VCE Biology are encouraged to select this elective.

Assessment will be based on experiments, practical reports, research, topic tests and an end of semester exam.

Forensics (One semester elective)

Course description

From the crime scene to the courtroom, every contact leaves a trace. Learn how so many elements come into play when there is foul play at hand. Forensics is more than fingerprints. In fact, you will understand exactly what Abby, the forensic scientist, from NCIS, was talking about when describing her findings in the lab!

Students will learn about the role of a forensic scientist, and the history of forensic science and its importance in the court room.

Students will be able to discern between an eye-witness and an expert witness when it comes to solving criminal cases.

In addition, students will develop their knowledge about techniques in finger printing, blood grouping, DNA profiling, hair, fibre, and soil analysis, as well as, using impressions of teeth, shoes and lips. From there, students will delve deeper into finding out about chromatography and anthropology.

Students who want to study VCE Biology and Chemistry are encouraged to select this elective.

Assessment will be based on experiments, practical reports, research, topic tests and an end of semester exam.

Physics and Chemistry (One semester elective)

Course description

Ever wondered what Sheldon and Leonard talk about? Do you have what it takes to surpass Sheldon’s belief that he is the only outstanding physicist on this planet?

Students will investigate the atom – electronic configurations, isotopes, and bonding. Students will also learn about Stoichiometry calculations, energy from the nucleus –radioactivity, nuclear fission and fusion, chain reactions, nuclear reactors, and the atom.

In addition, students will study medical physics – aspects of sounds and light, ultrasound, x-ray, radiotherapy, and radioisotopes. With Carbon Chemistry, students will focus on pathways and reactions.

Assessment will also be based on experiments, practical reports, research projects, topic tests, and an end of semester exam.

Students intending to undertake VCE Physics and or VCE Chemistry are recommended to take this elective in Year 10.

Psychology (One semester elective)

Course description

Why do we do what we do? What impacts our decisions, thoughts and feelings?

Students will learn the difference between psychology and psychiatry, the development of individual behaviour – nature versus nurture, sports psychology, clinical psychology, research, and adolescent health.

Students will complete research investigations, and learn and present about a field of psychology.

Assessment will also be based on reviews of research, completion of a scientific poster on a clinical disorder, research on risk taking behaviours during adolescence, and an end of semester exam.

Students intending to undertake VCE Psychology are recommended to take this elective in Year 10.

Health and Human Development (One semester elective)

Course description

This elective develops an understanding of the many dimensions of health – physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The course had a direct link to the VCE subject of the same name and aims to prepare students or VCE.

Students will learn about the definitions of health status, measurements of health status, the differences between health and development, the stages of the lifespan, physical development, and the role of nutrition, low, middle, and high income countries.

In addition, students will learn about the role of The United Nations and the World Health Organisation as well as, understanding aid agencies and the assistance they provide.

Assessment will be based on class activities and exercises, investigation projects, presentations and evaluations.

Physical Education (One semester elective)

Course description

Through a range of sports, students will develop greater responsibility by taking on an instructional role for class members.

This elective also covers theoretical components which will provide the basis of knowledge required for students wanting to study VCE Physical Education.

Some of the practical topics are Thunderhoc, indoor and outdoor sports, and peer group instruction.

In addition, the theory topics will cover the skeletal system, muscular system, cardio respiratory system, and biomechanics. Students will learn about the nutrients required for energy production, the energy systems, fitness components, and performance enhancing behaviour.

Assessment will be based on classwork, Learning Tasks, Peer Instruction Lesson, an end of semester exam, as well as , 100% in practical participation.

Food Studies (One semester elective)

Course description

This elective will develop an understanding of health and nutrition in Australia. Students will learn about meal planning, budgeting, sustainability, and the influences on food choices – advertising and labelling.

Students will also examine modern Australia and its multicultural influences. There will be a focus on safe food handling, hygiene, safety, storage, preparation and cooking techniques.

Students will spend a significant proportion of class time on the theoretical components of the subject and some of the time in practical cooking sessions.

Assessment will be based on class work, investigation projects, and presentations, design briefs, written tasks as well as practical food production.

Students intending to take VCE Food Studies are encouraged to complete two semesters of Year 10 Food Studies.

NOTE: This elective has a fixed levy and must be paid in full prior to beginning the subject for the preparation and supply of ingredients.

Product Design &Technology (One semester elective)

Course description

Students in this class will gain advanced skills and knowledge of joinery, and the safe use of portable power tools is a feature of this course.

Students will focus on the appropriate use of materials for specific purposes, enhanced problem solving skills, and develop an understanding of the relationships between materials, products, and design.

Students will develop an awareness of material costs, and apply accepted graphic techniques to designs, and to produce working plans.

Assessment will be based on the use of safe and skilful techniques, completion of all set practical work, completion of all homework and assignments.

Students intending to take VCE Wood are encouraged to complete two semesters of Year 10 Wood.

Product Design &Technology (One semester elective)

Course description

Students in this class will gain advanced skills and knowledge of designing products with metal. Students will manufacture core pieces of work to understand the manufacturing techniques, processes and procedures.

Students will apply written plans, measurements, and costing during the design process.

The course will cover the welding processes, types of sheet metals, cutting processes, cost analysis, sheet metal applications, testing metal strengths, and complex welding techniques.

Assessment will be based on written Learning Tasks, investigative activities, as well as practical projects.

Motor Vehicle Maintenance (One semester elective)

Course description

This elective teaches students the fundamentals of mechanical engineering ad its operations in the modern automobile. Students in this class will gain advanced skills and knowledge of mechanical standards both in the trade shop and at home.

Students will work collaboratively to develop their manual skills and understand problem solving and analytical procedures through the application of written instructions relating to set tasks.

Students will focus on basic vehicle maintenance and service, disassembly and assembly procedures, design brief, engine cylinder compression testing, engine ignition timing and toning, as well as, on-guard safety training will provide certificates for students.

Students will also learn about Worksafe standards, workshop tools, engine types and dynamics, 4-strike engine, automotive systems – suspension, brakes, electrical components and maintenance schedules.

Assessment will be based on student participation, comprehension of theoretical components, practical skills, and an end of semester exam.

IDM – Video Production (One semester elective)

Course description

This is a practical project based introduction to video production, designed for students who are interested in pursuing further study in video or film production. It is preferable that students have undertaken the Year 9 IDM –video Production elective as this course will develop the skills gained through Year 9.

Students will use the Adobe suite of software, including the use of Adobe Premier Pro with the potential to explore Adobe audition for more advanced sound editing, and Adobe After Effects for special effects.

The course also encourages effective collaboration with peers and careful consideration of the final output of the video product to appropriate media formats.

The topics that will be covered are, script development, storyboarding, the operation of equipment, the principles of video editing, titles and special effects.

Assessment will be based on the completion and participation of theoretical class work and tests, practical class work and projects, effective use of software, and the collation of a digital portfolio of all preparation and final files.

Students wishing to pursue VCE Media are encouraged to select this elective.

IDM – Web Page Design (One semester elective)

Course description

Students will learn about the Internet and its uses for business, education, and general advertising. Students will create their own presence on this medium by developing web pages using a variety of computer software tools and hardware.

The topics that will be covered are, how the internet works and its uses, Internet applications such as email, Web Browsers, and Web 2.0.

Visual Communicaion & Design (One semester elective)

Course description

This graphic communication course aims to provide students with the opportunity of developing their drawing and product information design skills by using a variety of media and design elements and principles.

Topics covered are, ellipses, oblique castle, castle design, board game design, board game surface graphics, shield design, and witch or wizard design.

Further areas of study will be house plan design, house elevations, builders’ symbols, business cards, kitchens and display home poster.

Assessment will be based on completion of course work, demonstration of effective skills in the area, overall presentation of folio of work, homework tasks and the development of creative skills.

Students intending to pursue VCE Visual Communication and Design are encouraged to select this elective over two semesters.

Drawing and Painting - 2D Art (One semester elective)

Course description

This elective aims to enhance knowledge of the visual language through the understanding of the elements and principles of 2D art.

Students will develop an ability to critically review and analyse artworks, as well as, develop their creativity and technical skills.

Students will experiment with a variety of media in projects. Students will learn about, tone, line, drawing from life and imagination, colour theory, painting, art history, use of a visual diary, print making techniques, and art theory.

This elective is particularly suitable for students who are keen to study Studio Arts at the VCE level.

Ceramics and Sculpture – 3D Art (One semester elective)

Course description

The aim of this elective is to enhance students’ knowledge of the elements and principles of 3D art.

Students in this class will develop skills in drawing, design, and clay techniques. They will study the works of various artists and produce their own 3D pieces.

Some of the topics may include, 3D activities in paper and card, wire, and plaster, art studies and theory, and an annotated visual diary.

Assessment will be based on practical work sculptures, theory work, and a research assignment.

This elective is particularly suitable for students who are keen to study Studio Arts at the VCE level.

Digital Photography (One semester elective)

Course description

The aim of this elective is to provide training to owners of digital cameras. Participants will gain user friendly information and demonstrations designed to enhance knowledge and skills of basic digital photography, editing, and presentation. Students will also learn about basic computer imaging, including Photoshop.

Students will make and present photographs that explore themes, issues, and aesthetic considerations. They will structure and present photographs appropriate to chosen styles, forms, and demonstrate a range of skills, techniques and processes to control the medium.

Students will undertake a research assignment on purchasing a digital camera that meets the required criteria, and analyse the implications of moving from conventional to digital photography.

Assessment will be based on the creation of a digital portfolio, research assignments, analysis, and investigations.

Multimedia (One semester elective)

Course description

Multimedia looks at the combination of design, colour, form, text, and animation in today’s digital world.

Students will look into the world of digital manipulation through basic animation, game creating, and 3D modelling. They will use a range of software including flash, Photoshop, and 3DS Max.

Students will create a basic animation, understand basic game rules in computer software to build a game, and create an original 3D model.

Assessment will be based on the creation of a portfolio, practical tasks, homework research assignments and tests.

Students wishing to pursue VCE media as an option are encouraged to select this elective.

So You Wanna be a Rock Star? (One semester elective)

Course description

Within a rock band setting, students will have the opportunity to learn one or more

instruments including: Voice, Keyboard, Guitar, Bass Guitar or Drum Kit. In small

rock band groups, students will be taught how to play the instrument of their choice

with a view to performance.

Within this area of study, students will learn how to read, write, and analyse music.

Students will also undergo an ear training and composition component.

It is strongly recommended that students select both semesters of Group

Performance if they intend selecting VCE Music Performance.

It is a prerequisite that students undertaking this subject will be enrolled in

Instrumental Music lessons at the school, to develop the required skills.

This subject has a fixed levy of $70* per semester.

Dance (One semester elective)

Course description

The Year 10 Dance elective aims to develop technical and physical skills such a

balance, control, and flexibility.

Students will work towards creating short duet or trio routines through expressive

intention and choreographic devices.

They will learn skills in relation to space, aerial and floor pathways, stage direction

and positioning.

Students will also experience performance management, props, costumes, lighting,

sound, and set design.

Assessment will be based on technique, choreography, dance history, incursions,

excursions, and performance. Students must participate 100% in all practical

classes.

Drama (One semester elective)

Course description

The Year 10 Drama course focuses on developing students’ expressive and

performance skills by introducing them to a range of dramatic styles and techniques.

Theatre styles from all over the world will be explored through practical workshops

and research tasks.

Students will study Australian theatre, looking at character development, stagecraft

elements, dramatic elements, performance analysis, and expressive skills.

From there, students will go on to learn about non-naturalistic artists such as Brecht.

They will be introduced to complex playmaking techniques with a view to develop

and create an ensemble and solo performance.

Assessment will be based on a folio of drama notes, participation in all class

activities and active participation in all performances, research assignments. There

will also be live theatre performances to attend.
