Message from the Chair

For MESA, 2012 was a year of outstanding progress and

achievement. The International Board launched a strategy that

fundamentally transforms MESA as follows:

Relevance to the Enterprise Define the Real Time Operations Space, which

encompasses Education, Certification, World Class Content and Networking

Grow Membership and Revenue

As you will read in this report, much has been accomplished to turn our strategy into reality:

MESA merged with World Batch Forum (WBF) to create a new organization that is a significant net gain for members

Our Global Education Program trained over 300 people World class content continued to be developed, adding to the already rich base of webinar,

books, articles and white papers valued at over $13,000,000 (more on this in the technical committee section)

Several new members - Solution Providers, System Integrators and End Users - have combined to grow MESA by over 50% paying members!

MESA is providing a critical need. While we have accomplished a lot, there is a lot of work to do. Simply

put, the Transformation of MESA is still a work in progress. This is the primary reason we asked John

Dyck to return as the Chair of the International Board for the next two years. John brings both the

experience and the vision to guide us on the path forward. John has the full support of the new board

and the membership.

Looking forward, one of our key challenges and priorities is membership growth – specifically with

manufacturers/producers. The “voice of the customer” has never been so important in order to

influence direction of the real time operations space that we all live in. The launch of the new

membership program strategy took place at the 2012 Industry Week Conference in Indianapolis, and

MESA is the title sponsor at the 2013 conference in Greenville. If we are to grow MESA and realize our

vision we need to ensure that the companies who attended the conference, those who have been

involved in MESA over the years and those who are just learning about MESA join the organization and

begin to take advantage of our world class education and content.

I would like to take this opportunity to send a special thanks to Mike Williams from the Dow Chemical

Company. Mike and Dow have been huge supporters of both MESA and WBF for many years, and it was

Mike’s inspiration and vision that helped bring the two organizations together.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your Chair, and I look forward to continuing to serve MESA

as the Immediate Past Chair.

President's Report - 2012 Accomplishments and 2013 Priorities

2012 marked MESA International’s Twentieth Anniversary, which

is quite an accomplishment given the changes in industry over

that time span. In the past twenty years, we’ve seen

unprecedented prosperity and growth followed by a crippling

global recession and economic hard times. We’ve seen some

industry leaders thrive, others stumble and some reinvent

themselves. And, we’ve also seen software and Information

Technologies (IT) explode in capability, reach and presence.

Who could have predicted in 1992 just how necessary a

community like MESA would be for learning how to leverage

modern IT solutions to drive Operations Excellence?

In 2012, MESA took steps to ensure our operational effectiveness and long-term sustainability. First, the

Board of Directors created the role of President and put an operational leader in place to supplement

the all-volunteer membership, committees and boards. The President’s role is to ensure the

association’s financial stability, drive growth in membership, support the needs of the global community

and determine how to fund on-going, strategic investments.

The MESA Global Education Program (GEP) is just such a strategic investment. The momentum built in

the GEP’s first year continued as the GEP team trained hundreds of industry professionals around the

world on the methodologies and business awareness of MES/MOM. GEP events were held on 6

continents in 2012, and the program materials were translated into German. The MESA GEP also earned

IACET Accreditation in 2012, which is a testament to the dedicated GEP team members and a validation

of the path the association is on with our global education initiative.

We also changed the membership structure in 2012, eliminating all free memberships and tying the

value of company manufacturer/producer memberships to education. Our goal is to establish a global

baseline of knowledge around MES/MOM that will benefit everyone – manufacturers/producers,

solution providers, consultants and vendors. Letting manufacturers/producers use their annual dues as

GEP credits helps companies get that baseline education across their organization, and it shows MESA is

putting our money where our mouth is when it comes to the importance of educating the marketplace.

Likely the biggest change to MESA in 2012 came with our merger with WBF, formerly the World Batch

Forum. WBF has a similar history to MESA and has served industry for almost twenty years themselves.

Their committees, forums and working groups gave the world B2MML and BatchML, and the quality

content they delivered to their members brought the total count in the MESA Resource Library to over

800 pieces valued at over $13,000,000. WBF was trusted as thought leaders and the unquestioned

authorities on “the batch problem”. But, over time, their members wanted the same thing that MESA

members want – tools and education on tying technology solutions in the plants to business value for

the company. We were talking the same language, often to the same people, and the timing was right

7 | P a g e

for our two organizations to join forces and work together toward that goal. The merger went

smoothly, and we are excited about our future together.

Speaking of the future, 2013 is now upon us. We look at the new year with improved operating and

oversight structures and stronger financials but no less work to do. We’ll continue to invest in the MESA

Global Education Program, updating our current offerings and providing additional content, like training

on B2MML. The GEP will also offer online course options, making it easier for more people to learn

what MESA knows. We’ll continue to offer public training, private (in-house) training and additional

mixed-model options – all with the goal of raising the baseline of knowledge around the world.

You’ll likely see MESA in more places this year, too, as we look to support more regional activities

globally. We’ll launch our 5th ‘Metrics That Matter’ research project in 2013 and continue this valuable

initiative for our members. And, we’ll continue to look for more ways to deliver value for our members

– like offering vertically focused GEP programs, educating senior business leaders, and building tangible

tools and deliverables to help companies understand the value, benefits, justification and steps to

successfully leverage technology in production, thereby building a competitive advantage in doing so.

Perhaps our most important mission in 2013, however, is to be a unifying voice for our industry.

Throughout MESA’s existence, the individuals who make up our community have proven that there is

significant value in leveraging Information Technologies to drive manufacturers/producers toward

Operations Excellence. What they are still challenged with is continuing to show their business leaders

that value and how to make production operations a strategic competitive differentiator for their

companies. Together, through MESA, we can speak with a unified voice to tell that story, build the

necessary tools and deliverables and move our industry forward. We look forward to doing so together.

Board and Key Members (as of December 31st 2012)

MESA International enjoyed participation from over 874 premium members from 425 companies in

2012. Our members came from 89 countries and membership was at its highest level since MESA’s

formation in 1992. In addition to this, basic memberships were held by an additional 3300 individuals. In

2012, MESA launched a new company membership structure for our manufacturer/producer members

with options for companies of all sizes. MESA’s goal is to be relevant to the enterprise and have the

company membership bring more benefit and opportunity to our members.

MESA Global Education Program

The MESA Global Education Program (GEP) was launched early in 2011 and proved a successful MESA

initiative to provide a baseline education for our industry. In 2012, our two programs – the MESA

Certificate of Awareness (CoA) and Certificate of Competency (CoC) - were attended by more than 300

professionals globally. We successfully ran dozens of programs in 6 continents with our 5 authorized

instructors and translated program materials for German-speaking countries.

In November 2012, the GEP earned IACET accreditation, which was a major achievement for the team

and the program. This accreditation proves that our processes for developing content, reacting to

attendee comment and approving competent instructors is world-class. It also means MESA GEP

training offers IACET Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for students who successfully pass the

courses.

MESA is truly committed to being the knowledge-broker for the MES/MOM space globally. The

association has stepped forward in the industry to build the GEP from the ground up and prove it can

run successfully around the world in a professional, accredited manner. We have also "put our money

where our mouth is" by making 100% of a manufacturer/producer's membership dues transferrable to

GEP training in order to help companies justify the cost of membership. We are working on additional

classes, such as a B2MML course planned for a mid-2013 launch, and remote training options to make

the classes more accessible to more people. We have also heard loud-and-clear the call to educate your

senior business leaders, and efforts are well underway to deliver on this need.

At the end of 2012, I stepped down as Chairman of the GEP after 3 years of exciting and rewarding work.

Mike Yost has taken up the baton and is already launching new programs. Knowledge and preparation

are everything in the world of MOM - attend a MESA GEP, learn and use expert knowledge to the

benefit of your company!

MESA has partnered with IndustryWeek to become the title sponsor of the 2013 IW Best Plants Conference located in Greenville, SC April 22 – 24. Expanding the 2012 conference relationship, MESA was invited to join the IW Best Plants advisory board, in an effort to create topical MESA related content geared toward technology. This partnership will raise MESA brand awareness and our value proposition to manufacturing executives. Why? Because manufacturing enterprise solutions is an important part of driving performance. And as we approach 2013, manufacturers can't afford to not know what MESAknows. MESA is committed to showing the world what our community knows – that there is significant business value in leveraging today's modern information technologies in their production operations. Our 2013 North American Conference is being held in conjunction with IndustryWeek's Best Plants Conference in an effort to show the industrial businesses' leadership typically associated with the event the deep domain expertise, experience and capabilities within MESA. When the world sees the value of knowing what MESA knows, companies will more seriously look within MESA to find the partners and resources they need to build a competitive advantage by connecting their plants to their enterprise. About the Conference The conference is dedicated to helping manufacturing facilities improve their operations. Its theme is continuous improvement. For nearly two decades, the conference has been produced by IndustryWeek magazine, the leading resource for manufacturing operations knowledge. Through plant tours, keynote presentations, numerous breakout sessions, networking events, and an exhibit hall, the conference provides manufacturing professionals with ideas they can bring back to their facilities and implement to improve their operations.

Technical Committee

2012 was a year of progress and transition for the MESA Metrics Working Group. Early in the year, the latest

MESA Metrics that Matter research report, Pursuit of Performance Excellence, was published and posted to

the Resource Library. This research had the largest response ever, and also resulted in industry-specific

findings reports for the Semiconductor and Medical Device Industries. New co-leaders, Ted Bobkowski and

John Jackiw, kept the momentum going on MESA’s liaison role for the ISO 184/SC5/WG9 Manufacturing

Metrics Standards, with European team members taking the lead. They also helped to initiate new activities

such as the Metrics Maturity Model, which is aiming to provide guidelines both on best practices for

performance measurement and a view into which metrics are more likely to be used by companies at

different stages of their maturity in metrics.

Under the leadership of Darren Riley, the Guidebook on ROI and Justification for MES/MOM has moved to a

relatively complete document that is due to be published in the first half of 2013. This Guidebook provides a

best practices guide for one of the burning questions since the founding of MESA, and provides clear language

that MESA members can use with their accounting teams to build a business case. This major piece of

content has had great contributions by many members, and the outstanding areas at the end of 2012 were

mainly in gathering case examples and finalizing wording.

In addition, the technical committee undertook to inventory and valuated all of MESA’s content. Over the

past 20 years we have produced 850 items from MESA and WBF:

400 Articles

8 Books & Guidebooks

50 Podcasts

700 Presentations

10 Studies & Surveys

40 Webcasts

40 White Papers

5 Glossary & assorted other materials

30 WBF Publications

7 WBF Standards updates

Software product instantiations of standards – B2MML Schema

Quite an accomplishment that all contributors over the years should be proud of! While it is never easy to

value content, we did ask several of our experienced members including industry analysts to do just that. The

reason being that one of the key reasons for organizations and individuals joining MESA is the content and the

associated value it brings. The results of the analysis was both insightful and rewarding – based on a

combination of actual sell price, time and quantity the total value of the MESA content is approximately

$13,000,000. This represents real value to MESA members.

WBF Merger

2012 saw the merger between MESA and WBF, The Organization for Production Technology. WBF had an 18 year history of

supporting the process automation and operations needs of the technical and management professions in process

manufacturing through conferences, webcasts, standards, and educational seminars. WBF has been the major non-profit

organization supporting and promoting the ISA 88 Batch Control Standard, the ISA 106 Procedure Automation standard, the

ISA 95 Manufacturing Operations Management standard, and the ISA 99 cyber system security standard. The merger

provides WBF members access to MESA’s world-class content, Global Education Programs, and an expansive network of

solution providers and system integrators.

MESA and WBF had similar end users and sponsors, with MESA having more discrete manufacturing companies and WBF

having more process industry companies. With the merger of MESA and WBF, the new combined organization has

increased support for the needs of the process industries. The combined organization now covers the full range of industrial

companies; and can even be used in other industries because the best practices and world-class content can help any

company that is trying to improve its operations and increase its productivity.

WBF members and volunteers have been quickly integrated into the MESA committees, providing valuable new support and

insight. The merger also has seen the addition of the WBF library, with papers and presentations from 18 years of

conferences, added to the MESA library. WBF’s B2MML standard (Business to Manufacturing Markup Language) has been

rolled into the MESA Technical committee with a new version of the standard released in December under the MESA

logo. MESA is also working to add WBF content into the Global Education Program, expanding the coverage of the training

into new areas that support full range of industrial companies.
