Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Wis 6:12-16; Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; 1 Thes 4:13-18 or 4:13-14; Mt 25:1-13

Today’s Gospel is a famous parable that speaks of ten maidens invited to a

wedding feast, a symbol of the Kingdom of Heaven and of eternal life (Mt

25:1-13). It is a happy image with which, however, Jesus teaches a truth that

calls us into question. In fact five of those 10 maidens were admitted to the

feast because when the bridegroom arrived they had brought the oil to light

their lamps, whereas the other five were left outside because they had been

foolish enough not to bring any. What is represented by this “oil”, the

indispensable prerequisite for being admitted to the nuptial banquet?

St Augustine (cf. Discourses 93, 4), and other ancient authors interpreted it

as a symbol of love that one cannot purchase but receives as a gift,

preserves within one and uses in works. True wisdom is making the most of

mortal life in order to do works of mercy, for after death this will no longer

be possible. When we are reawaken for the Last Judgement, it will be made

on the basis of the love we have shown in our earthly life (cf. Mt 25:31-46).

And this love is a gift of Christ, poured out in us by the Holy Spirit. Those

who believe in God-Love bear within them invincible hope, like a lamp to

light them on their way through the night beyond death to arrive at the great

feast of life.

Let us ask Mary, Sedes Sapientiae, to teach us true wisdom, the wisdom that

became flesh in Jesus. He is the Way that leads from this life to God, to the

Eternal One. He enabled us to know the Father’s face, and thus gave us

hope full of love. This is why the Church addresses the Mother of the Lord

with these words: “Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra” [our life, our sweetness

and our hope]. Let us learn from her to live and die in the hope that

never disappoints.

We all are guilty of putting off doing something, because we think we are too

busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Regrettably, too many

of us apply this attitude to our Faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now,

in your current circumstances. Don’t delay, how is God calling you to use your

gifts today?

As we near Thanksgiving, let us give thanks to God for all the blessings we have received and show our less fortunate Parish families our love and compassion. Please bring canned goods like canned & jarred gravy, sweet corn, green beans, sweet peas, yams/sweet potato, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, chicken broth, cranberry sauce, sugar, rice, beans (black and red). Our St. Vincent de Paul members will make food boxes up, so all our families will have a blessed Thanksgiving. THANK YOU for your generous donations.

Trigésimo Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Sab 6:12-16; Sal 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; 1 Tes 4:13-18 or 4:13-14; Mt 25:1-13

El Evangelio de hoy es una célebre parábola, que habla de diez muchachas

invitadas a una fiesta de bodas, símbolo del reino de los cielos, de la vida

eterna (cf. Mt 25, 1-13). Es una imagen feliz, con la que sin embargo Jesús

enseña una verdad que nos hace reflexionar; de hecho, de aquellas diez

muchachas, cinco entran en la fiesta, porque, a la llegada del esposo, tienen

aceite para encender sus lámparas; mientras que las otras cinco se quedan

fuera, porque, necias, no han llevado aceite. ¿Qué representa este «aceite»,

indispensable para ser admitidos al banquete nupcial?

San Agustín (cf. Discursos 93, 4) y otros autores antiguos leen en él un

símbolo del amor, que no se puede comprar, sino que se recibe como don,

se conserva en lo más íntimo y se practica en las obras. Aprovechar la vida

mortal para realizar obras de misericordia es verdadera sabiduría, porque,

después de la muerte, eso ya no será posible. Cuando nos despierten para el

juicio final, este se realizará según el amor practicado en la vida terrena (cf.

Mt 25, 31-46). Y este amor es don de Cristo, derramado en nosotros por el

Espíritu Santo. Quien cree en Dios-Amor lleva en sí una esperanza

invencible, como una lámpara para atravesar la noche más allá de la muerte,

y llegar a la gran fiesta de la vida.

A María, Sedes Sapientiae, pidamos que nos enseñe la verdadera sabiduría,

la que se hizo carne en Jesús. Él es el camino que conduce de esta vida a

Dios, al Eterno. Él nos ha dado a conocer el rostro del Padre, y así nos ha

donado una esperanza llena de amor. Por esto, la Iglesia se dirige a la Madre

del Señor con estas palabras: «Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra». Aprendamos

de ella a vivir y morir en la esperanza que no defrauda.

Todos somos culpables de dejar de hacer algo porque pensamos que estamos demasiado ocupados. Todos hemos dicho: "Lo haré más tarde cuando tenga tiempo". Desafortunadamente, muchos de nosotros aplicamos esta actitud a nuestra fe. La llamada de Jesús es urgente, en el aquí y ahora, en sus circunstancias actuales. No te demores, ¿cómo te está llamando Dios a usar hoy tus dones?
