FROM THE BOARD Summary of Board Highlights and Decisions _______________________________________________________________

Wednesday, September 9, 2004 Human Resources, Program & Religious Affairs Committee

____________________________________________________________________________________ TCDSB invites Archdiocese representation on Board The Board has recommended that the Director of Education enter into discussions with the Archdiocese of Toronto to explore the possibility of Diocesan representation on the Board of Trustees. Such discussion would solicit the views of the Archdiocese on the nature and scope of the role it might assume with respect to the Board of Trustees.

Board approves constituency assistants for Trustees The Board has approved retaining constituency assistants for the 12 Trustees, at a cost not to exceed $18,000 per Trustee. Trustees can choose from two options:

1. The TCDSB Human Resources Department would, subject to the approval of the affected Trustee, hire a constituency assistant as an employee of the Board for a fixed term. Trustees would have the option of sharing an assistant and pooling their available $18,000 assistant budgets.

2. The Assistant could also be retained as an “independent contractor.” The role of the constituency assistants would be to provide support to trustees in their efforts to respond to their constituents and the needs of their school communities. Board adopts new process for transfers and placements of principals and vice-principals The Board had adopted a new Transfer and Placement Process for Principals, Vice-Principals and Coordinators. Each October, local School Councils will review and/or develop the Principal/Vice-Principal profile based on the guidelines provided. This profile will be used to help select the administrators for the local school. Trustee will be consulted with regard to these profiles, and students in secondary schools through representation on the CSAC may also give input. The Superintendent of Human Resources will chair meetings with the Superintendents to develop the recommendation for the transfers and promotions. The process begins in October, with anticipated conclusion in April/May.

Upcoming Meetings Board September 20, 2004 Trustee Services and Bylaws Committee September 27, 2004 Special Education Advisory Committee September 29, 2004 Human Resources, Program and Religious Affairs Committee October 7, 2004 Administrative and Corporate Services Committee October 14, 2004 All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, North York Produced by the Communications Department, Toronto Catholic District School Board, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, North York, Ontario M2N 6E8 416-222-8282, ext. 5314; fax: 416-229-5342; e-mail: [email protected]

The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) has announced plans to set up a residential secondary school credit program in Roseto, Italy during the second semester of the coming school year. The program is being offered in conjunction with Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana, a Toronto-based organization that promotes Italian culture in Canada. "It is an exciting, exciting program," said Angela Gauthier, superintendent of education, who visited the school facilities and residence in Roseto this summer.

GOLDEN BEACHES

The town, which has a population of about 40,000 people, is a seaside resort on the Adriatic coast in the region of Abruzzo, which is known for its golden beaches, citadels, castles and cathedrals. "The teaching facility is a brand new school we are leasing from one of the private religious orders," Gauthier said, noting that the students will be housed in an apartment-style complex, which is located on the beach, about a 10 minute walk from the school. Gauthier said that the program is open to students in Grades 10 through 12.

And, although the final curriculum has yet to be determined, pupils will likely have the opportunity to earn credits in English, math, art, social sciences, religion and Italian. "The courses that are taught will depend on the students who are willing to go," Gauthier said, adding that classes will be taught according to the requirements of the Ontario curriculum by board staff. "We are hoping for 40 to 50 students to make it viable for the first semester," she said. Registration is $9,450, which includes return airfare, room and board, school supplies and textbooks and excursions in Italy, France and Switzerland.

BURSARIES AVAILABLE

Bursaries are available and there are no academic requirements for participation in the program. "It is an open system," Gauthier said, adding "we will try to meet the tuition needs of students." Gauthier said the total program cost to the board has not yet been finalized. "We are just getting off the ground with the organizations aspects," she said, noting this is the first time the board has offered students the opportunity to spend a semester abroad. "We have offered summer courses overseas so there is a long history with that," she said, adding that there is already a buzz about the program.

"We've had a number of calls and people are very excited about the program," Gauthier said. "It is a wonderful opportunity for students, and not just students of Italian background. "It is a very rich program from the point of view of culture and language acquisition," she said.

The York Catholic District School Board is operating a similar program at the same facility in Roseto during the first semester of the school year.

The TCDSB is hosting two information meetings for parents and students next month. The first takes place at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Ave. E. A second meeting is being held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12 at Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana, 901 Lawrence Ave. W. For more information call 416-222-8282 ext. 5370.

St. Michael's choir prepares for a robust holiday season In tune Mirror/Guardian Sep. 17, 2004 CARRIE BRUNET In the fall, Father John Missio's greatest concern is the changing voices of his students.

"We have some boys that go away for the summer as sopranos and come back as altos or tenors," he said. It's a concern, you would only find at a boys' choir.

St. Michael's Choir School is gearing up for the holiday season already, and is letting the public know about their Christmas concert now.

Promoters say the event "promises to attract a capacity crowd."

The magic of the choir is in the transformation of the boys, some of whom have never had vocal training before attending St. Michael's Choir school.

"Considering they come here in Grade 3 with no prior training," said Father Missio, "it's really quite impressive."

The boys practice their repertoire twice daily throughout the school year in addition to their regular curriculum.

Moreover, to get a full appreciation of music, every boy is required to take piano instruction.

Some will choose to get involved in additional instruments such as guitar or strings.

The result is a group of disciplined young singers, who perform a concert that has become an annual favorite.

"There is a smoothness, or a blend, among boys who sing together everyday and are close in age group," said Missio.

The choir school has produced many accomplished vocalists, including Michael Burgess, John McDermott, Matt Dusk and Claude Morrison (the Nylons).

The school selects students from catholic schools around the GTA, during their audition process.

The school has about 300 students from Grades 3 to 12, and all of them are involved in one of the three choirs.

The senior choir is for Grades 7-12, the junior choir for Grades 5 and 6 the elementary choir for Grades 3 and 4.

"The younger students, we don't push to perform much, but their highlight is to perform in the Christmas concert," Missio said.

While the choir performs regularly at the St. Michael's cathedral, the Christmas concert at Massey Hall, allows the boys to spread their wings.

"Massey Hall gives us the opportunity to let our hair down," said Missio.

The concert will feature traditional hymns, some classical repertoire, and a few lighter numbers and carols for the audience to join in on.

This year, an original medley by John Arpin, a former student of St. Michael's Choir School, will be added to the list.

The choir has performed at a variety of events over the last few years, including a performance for Pope John Paul II during his visit to Toronto for World Youth Day in 2002.

For tickets to this year's concert call Ticketline at 416-872-4255.
