1 Samuel 11:2“gouge out the right eye”

• NAU 1 Samuel 11:2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "I will make it with you on this condition, that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it a reproach on all Israel.”

• This would seriously limit their fighting ability, both peripheral vision and depth perception. But the Scriptural reason is;

• “I will make it a reproach on all Israel.”

1 Samuel 11:2, gouged out eyes

• Do you remember Samson back in Judges 16:21 “Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze chains, and he was a grinder in the prison.”

• They foolishly thought that he would no longer be a problem.

• NAU 2 Kings 25:7 They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, then put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

• Jeremiah 32:5 and he will take Zedekiah to Babylon…

1 Samuel 11:6, Samuel is Born again into another man

• NAU 1 Samuel 11:6 Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and he became very angry.

• NAU 1 Samuel 10:6 "Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man.

• NAU 1 Samuel 10:22 Therefore they inquired further of the LORD, "Has the man come here yet?" So the LORD said, "Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage." 6

1 Samuel 12:1Fine, Have it your way!

• NAU 1 Samuel 12:1 Then Samuel said to all Israel, "Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me and I have appointed a king over you.

• 1Sam 8:7 And the LORD said to Samuel…they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me… 9 …listen to their voice; however, you shall solemnly warn them … 18 …you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day." 19 …the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel,… 20 that we also may be like all the nations… 22 And the LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice, and appoint them a king…

1 Samuel 12:14-15, if/then’s

• NAU 1 Samuel 12:14 "If you will fear the LORD and serve Him, and listen to His voice… 15 "If you will not listen to the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the command of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your fathers… 24 "Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth… 25 "But if you still do wickedly, both you and your king will be swept away."

1 Samuel 12:17, Stormy Prayer

• NAU 1 Samuel 12:17 "Is it not the wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD, that He may send thunder and rain. Then you will know and see that your wickedness is great which you have done in the sight of the LORD by asking for yourselves a king."

• Job 37:4 …He thunders with His majestic voice, And He does not restrain the lightnings when His voice is heard.

• Heidi Mittiga says, “I have never liked thunderstorms. A few weeks ago, as I sat at my kitchen table during a particularly noisy storm, I started to pray in an effort to comfort myself. As lightning and thunder split the night sky on all sides, my prayer unwittingly began,

• "Dear LOUD Jesus …”

1 Samuel 12:17 , rain during harvest

• NAU 1 Samuel 12:17 "Is it not the wheat harvest today? …the LORD… send thunder and rain…

• The Nelson Study Bible, Page 470, says, “The land of Israel receives its rainfall during the winter season. For rain to fall during the wheat harvest would be most unusual. The miracle was intended to convince the people of their great wickedness in demanding a king. The miracle also served to enhance Israel's respect for both the Lord and Samuel.”

• I am not a wheat farmer but I would bet that rain during harvest causes financial harm.

1 Samuel 12:20, Serve The Lord • NAU 1 Samuel 12:20 Samuel said to the people, "Do

not fear. You have committed all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.

• NAU Deuteronomy 10:12 "Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, [Deuteronomy 11:13, 1 Sam 12:24]

• NAU Deuteronomy 4:29 "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.

1 Samuel 12:23, Question: "What is a sin of omission?” gotquestions.org

• “Answer: James 4:17 declares, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." A sin of omission is a sin that is the result of not doing something God’s Word teaches that we should do. It is generally used in contrast with the corresponding phrase “the sin of commission,” or sins that a person actively commits. Paul juxtaposes the two concepts in Romans 7:14-20. • In the New Testament, the classic example given by Jesus is the account of the Good Samaritan. After a man had been beaten and left in need of help, the first two men to pass by—a priest and a Levite, both of whom knew better—failed to act. The third man, a Samaritan, stopped to show compassion to the man in need (Luke 10:30-37). Jesus used this example to teach that we are to likewise help those in need. 1 Samuel 12:23, Seriously, Pray!

• 1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing;

• Jody Capehart says, “I frequently use (1 Thessalonians 5:17) to encourage the children I teach to "pray without ceasing." One day after chapel, a young boy said, "Mrs. Capehart, I am sorry I sneezed during your prayer today." I assured him sneezing was no problem but I appreciated his apology. He responded,

• "Well, I know you like us to pray without sneezing."

1 Samuel 12:23, Sin to Not Pray

• Isaac the Syrian said, “When the Spirit has come to reside in someone, that person cannot stop praying; for the Spirit prays without ceasing in him. No matter if he is asleep or awake, prayer is going in his his heart all the time. He may be eating or drinking, he may be resting or working- the incense of prayer will ascend spontaneously from his heart. The slightest stirring of his heart is like a voice which sings in silence and in secret to the Invisible.”

1 Samuel 12:23 James 4:17, Question: "What is a sin of omission?” gotquestions.org

• Answer: James 4:17 declares, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." A sin of omission is a sin that is the result of not doing something God’s Word teaches that we should do. It is generally used in contrast with the corresponding phrase “the sin of commission,” or sins that a person actively commits. Paul juxtaposes the two concepts in Romans 7:14-20. He decries his tendency toward both types of sin. He does what he doesn’t want to do and knows is wrong—the sin of commission—and he doesn’t do what he knows he should do and really wants to do—the sin of omission. Here is a picture of the new nature in conflict with the flesh in which it dwells.

By doing so, he clearly communicated that it is sinful to avoid doing good, just as it is sinful to pursue what is evil.

• Jesus further describes the sins of omission in the parable of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46. The goats, those who are sent away by Christ, are those who saw others hungry and thirsty, but did not provide food and water. They are those who saw others in need of clothing, who were sick or in jail but did nothing to clothe or comfort them. These are all examples of sins of omission. There was no sin committed against these needy people—they were not intentionally starved or deprived of their clothing. But the sin of omission was committed when those who could have provided for them chose not to.

• Finally, the apostle Paul provides a summary statement that explains why we should do what is right and refrain from sins of omission: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). When we do the will of our heavenly Father (Matthew 12:50), we avoid sins of omission and live productive, fruitful lives pleasing to God (Romans 12:1-2).
