Overview of the SMU Business Study Mission (GCC Countries)

Business Study Mission (BSM) Middle East is a 13-week module that examines the

developing relationship between the member-nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

and Singapore through the study of its unique business environment. Focusing on the real

estate sector, students will gain insights to the world’s booming high-end real estate region

and its internship, career and business opportunities. Through case studies, student

projects and guest lectures, the course aims to present to students real-life environmental

influences and challenges that impact businesses in the Middle East. The course will

conclude with a study trip to the Middle East to visit selected companies and real-estate

development sites.

To date, the Singapore Management University (SMU) has sent over 300 students to the

Gulf region with over 60 students placed in valuable internship positions in Middle Eastern

corporate heavyweights like Emirates National Oil Company, Etihad Airways, Jurong

International Consulting, and Gulf Research Centre.

Spurred by the successes of the previous eight BSMs – 68 students will be heading to Qatar,

the United Arab Emirates and Oman from May 7 to May 20 2012 as a continuation of SMU’s

longest running BSM programme.

The 14-day itinerary includes meetings and networking dinners with government officials,

diplomats as well as established business dignitaries. Additionally, they will visit

institutions such as the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Abu Dhabi Council for

Economic Development and Qatar Tourism Authority, along with trips to major

developments such as Qatari Diar’s Lusail City and Atlantis, The Palm. Our students will

also get the chance to interact with Singaporean entrepreneurs who have established

businesses in the Middle East as well as business leaders of Arab companies.

Student Profile

Our programme runs once every academic semester, bringing together cross level and

cross faculty students that are pursing degrees in Business Management, Accountancy,

Law, Political Science, Economics and Information Systems. International students

from countries such as Indonesia, India, China, Myanmar and Vietnam have also had

the privilege of being a part of this unique programme.

Seminar Sessions in Singapore

Seminar sessions held in Singapore provide participants with an understanding of the

business and social environment in the six different GCC countries before the BSM trip.

They will be devoted to research and discussion of macroeconomic as well as general

business issues. Prominent business leaders along with industry and government

representatives will also be invited to give presentations and interact with students during

these sessions.

5 | P a g e

Research Projects

Participants will work in groups of four or five on the research projects.

Minor Projects include group presentations which analyze: (i) socio-cultural settings and political/economic conditions in the GCC countries; (ii) successful business models; and (iii) aspects of entrepreneurship & entrepreneurial opportunities. The objective is to create an awareness of the unique identities of these economies, to introduce students to a variety of tools and resources for obtaining information on current economic, and business environments in the GCC countries; to inculcate in students the ability and desire to incorporate humanistic, social science, and cultural perspectives into business analyses; and, significantly, to impress on the participants the wealth of business and employment opportunities in the region.

Major Projects focus on the internationalization of Singapore companies into

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE. Teams analyze the

implications of contextual knowledge to the actual practice of business in the

case-study economies. Groups may choose their preferred themes from one of

these three categories: (i) successful business models; (ii) aspects of

entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial opportunities; or (iii) market

research/feasibility studies.

About the SMU Business Study Mission

Using a country-specific study as its base, the ‘Business Study Mission’ course offered in

SMU examines the rapidly developing business environment and the available

opportunities in a particular city or region. Particular emphasis is placed on the socio-

political, cultural, legal environments, and the influence they exert on business practices.

6 | P a g e

Introduced in 2002, SMU is the forerunner in Singapore to introduce such a course,

typically catered to MBA students, at the undergraduate level.

Through case studies, student projects and guest lectures, the course aims to present

students with real-life environmental influences and challenges that impact businesses in

the city or region. The course culminates with a trip to the location itself usually the main

city which is the subject of the study, where through a host of site visits, networking

sessions, and presentations by prominent individuals from both private and public sectors,

it aims to facilitate the development of a greater understanding of the city.

Participating students return with an enriched knowledge not just of its business

developments and the lessons that can be drawn from them, but also of the rich culture and

history of the country. Both of the above, too, will aid participating students in extending

their personal networks to the region.

To date, over 800 SMU undergraduates have embarked on business study missions to

countries such as Argentina, Bahrain, Bangalore, Chile, China, Germany, India, Qatar, Russia,

Saudi Arabia, Scandinavia, South Korea, Spain, UAE, the USA and Vietnam.
