SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2019 PENTECOST SUNDAY

Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on his disciples and gave them the power to forgive sins. John 20.

At the Last Supper, Jesus promised his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. When He appeared to them after his resurrection, Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven; whose sins you retain are retained.” John 20. Just as God breathed spirit and life into the first man, Adam, so Jesus breathed “new life” into humanity after the resurrection by imparting the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, creation began anew. That is the gift of Pentecost. Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to his disciples because he knew that they needed a power and strength beyond themselves to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. He also understood the essential need for people’s sins to be forgiven and so gave the gift of forgiving sins to the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Book of Acts describes the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in images of wind, fire and language. The Spirit brought energy, courage and articulation to the disciples of Jesus. In fact, looking at the description of the Christian community in the Book of Acts, it is clear that the Holy Spirit had an incredible impact on the early Church and the spread of the gospel. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the terrified disciples suddenly became bold ambassadors for the gospel. Even when the authorities opposed and persecuted them, the disciples could not be dissuaded from their mission because they were filled with the Holy Spirit. The transformation of the disciples from fearful to courageous men is proof that Jesus is alive and well in our world and proof of the seismic power of God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the energizing power of God and in our world. The Lord offers each of us the same gifts of the Holy Spirit that He gave to his first disciples. The Sacrament of Confirmation is our personal moment of Pentecost. At Confirmation, we receive the Spirits gifts of the Holy Spirit, including the gifts of Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel, Piety, Courage and Fear of the Lord. We are given these gifts to go make a difference in our world. Let’s vow to do precisely that. “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the heart of your faithful. Enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.”

PASTOR’S COLUMN How the Holy Spirit helped me speak Spanish!

This weekend we celebrate Pentecost, the official end of the Easter Season. Pentecost was a harvest festival in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Pentecost marks the coming of the Holy Spirit after Jesus’ ascension into heaven.

The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, is present in every sacrament and is responsible for changing bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus at every Mass. The Holy Spirit is the active, energizing presence of God in our world.

One of my most memorable experiences of the Holy Spirit occurred when I was a first-year seminarian assigned to work in a parish. The Pastor was bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish. He had a Spanish radio and TV ministry. One day, he invited me to the filming of a TV show in Spanish on the Holy Spirit. Since I had only an elementary understanding of Spanish, I didn’t catch much of what was said as the Pastor interviewed guests regarding the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

After the filming was complete and the guests had gone home, the show’s producer informed the Pastor that he was one minute short on footage for the show. He suggested the Pastor call someone back to be interviewed to fill up the time. But the Pastor looked at me and said, “Joe will do that.” I protested, “But I don’t speak Spanish.” He replied, “Just tell me in English what you want to say about the Holy Spirit and I will tell you how to say it in Spanish.” I was terrified at that thought and objected greatly, but the Pastor insisted. I didn’t want to flunk my parish ministry assignment so I reluctantly agreed. I prayed big-time to the Holy Spirit for help with the task, saying over and again, “Come, Holy Spirit!” My prayer was answered. Minutes later, I looked into the camera, and with the best Spanish accent I could muster, said, “El Espiritu Santo es la gasolina de mi vida . . .” [“The Holy Spirit is the fuel of my life . . .”] The Pastor was pleased. A few weeks later, the program aired and several Spanish-speaking people who saw it said to me, “Well, if it isn’t Señor seminarista fraudulento José [Joe, the fraudulent seminarian]!” I was endlessly teased about my appearance on the show, but people said my words and accent were tops. Believe me, that was the grace and work of the Holy Spirit, not Fraudulent Seminarian Joe! I learned that day the power of the Holy Spirit, a lesson which has never left me. I pray to the Holy Spirit many times each day, especially when I feel overwhelmed by the demands of life. Thanks be to God for the great gift of the Holy Spirit. I strongly commend everyone to pray daily: Come Holy Spirit, or, Ven Espiritu Santo! You will never go wrong if you seek the grace of the Holy Spirit. Have a blessed Pentecost, Fr. Joe

HOW TO CONFESS SINS IN THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Begin your confession with the sign of the cross, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. My last confession was _______ weeks (months, years) ago." The priest may read a passage from holy Scripture. Say the sins that you remember. Start with the one(s) that is most difficult to say. (In order to make a valid confession, the faithful must confess all mortal sins.) After confessing all the sins you remember since your last confession, you may conclude by saying, "I am sorry for these sins, all the sins of my past life, and all the sins I can’t remember." Listen to the words of the priest. He will assign a penance. Doing the penance will diminish the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. The Priest also may give words of Counsel. When invited, express some prayer of sorrow or Act of Contrition such as: O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen. At the end of the Confession, listen to the words of absolution, which impart the sacramental forgiveness of Jesus and the Church through the ordained priest. As you listen to the words of forgiveness, you may make the sign of the cross with the priest. If he closes by saying, "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good," respond, "For His mercy endures forever." After the Confession is complete, give thanks to God for forgiving your sins. If you recall some serious sin you forgot to tell, rest assured that it has been forgiven with the others, but be sure to confess it in your next Confession. Do your assigned Penance. Resolve to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation often. We Catholics are fortunate to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is the ordinary way for us to have our sins forgiven. The sacrament is a powerful help to get rid of our weaknesses, grow in holiness, and lead a balanced and virtuous life.

NEXT TIME: Making a Good Examination of Conscience in preparation for Confession
