8. TEACHING (a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments Teaching Philosophy
Effective teaching facilitates learning, but learning is done by the learner. My teaching mission is to be the best facilitator of learning that I can be, using constructivism as a theoretical basis for my work. My job is to create opportunities for students challenge their existing ideas and move toward expertise. None of us are blank slates or empty vessels. Instead, each person holds ideas about how the world works, based on our unique set of experiences. Learning involves examining those ideas, and potentially altering them in light of new information. The additional information might be brand new or simply elaborative; it might contradict how we think the world works, and might threaten the core of our mental models, or challenge our worldviews. Sometimes we rebuild our fundamental ideas – a task that can be both frightening and supremely rewarding - or we make more subtle changes, filling in missing connections or re-structuring our ideas, tweaking here and there. Ideally, all these changes move us toward more expert-like thinking in both familiar and new domains. Learning requires us to do the hard work to change our ideas about the world. To succeed, we need appropriately challenging tasks, and teachers are one source of those tasks.
As a teacher, my challenging tasks are to: (1) Decide what is important for students to learn. (2) Devise activities for students to engage with the material in ways that can help them learn and that truly
emphasize what the students will do. (3) Figure out what students are learning. (4) Iterate based on feedback from students, others, and data.
Over time, my own mental models of teaching and learning have become more complex, with more interconnected parts, with increasing awareness of the perpetual holes in my own knowledge about human learning. (b) Courses Taught at UBC Session Course Number Total

9. SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
(a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments
As a teaching-focused faculty member at UBC, my interests and accomplishments fall into three categories: (1) leadership in teaching and learning initiatives, (2) contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, and (3) dissemination. I have led, or am leading, three major initiatives within the EOAS department to improve teaching and learning for undergraduate students (see 9(b), 13, and teaching dossier). I have initiated and contributed to research into student learning and experiences which is broadly applicable to many courses, such as how to help low-performers succeed, evaluating student workloads, evaluating the effects of multiple instructors in single courses, and evaluating student engagement related to pedagogy (see 9(d), 9(e), and Publications Record). In my specific subdiscipline (climate science), in collaboration with others, I am using evidence-based approaches to evaluate student mental models of the climate system, and to create and assess interventions intended to help students move toward more expert-like ideas (see 13). For dissemination of evidence-based teaching practices, I am active both in campus teaching and learning events and in international disciplinary conferences where science education is included (as a facilitator and participant, see 9(d), 9(e), 9(g)), and Publications Record). Leadership in Teaching and Learning Initiatives: Since 2007, I have led and managed three significant efforts to improve teaching and learning in the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences department. (1) The Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative (CWSEI) in EOAS (2007-2014), (2) the CWSEI Extension in EOAS (2014-2017), and (3) Flexible Learning in EOAS (2014-2016; see Section 9(b)). My teaching dossier contains the details of these projects and my roles, including overseeing project planning and the work of full-time Science Teaching and Learning Fellows. In brief, the CWSEI and CWSEI Extension have enabled EOAS to improve teaching and learning for the long-term, using a scientific approach to teaching and learning. Our CWSEI effort included targeting specific courses for transformation, implementing innovative and evidence-based interactive teaching techniques, developing a sustainable TA training program, assessing student attitudes toward science, and assessing student learning. The CWSEI Extension is allowing us to continue those efforts and, in addition, to explore co-teaching for professional development as a means to pass on evidence-based teaching practices to new or other faculty members. The Flexible Learning project is enabling us to bring CWSEI ideas to our distance education (DE) offerings and swap the best materials between DE and face-to-face courses. The majority of faculty members in EOAS have been involved in some way in these initiatives. Post-docs, sessionals, and graduate students have also been involved, affecting learning for thousands of undergraduates.
Teaching and Learning Highlights: Largely due to my involvement with CWSEI, my personal approach to teaching has become more student-focused and evidence-based. At this point in my career, one of my primary purposes is to facilitate learning about Earth’s climate as effectively and broadly as possible. My two most recent course development projects are both climate science courses that incorporate evidence-based approaches to learning: (1) EOSC 340 (Global Climate Change), developed with Phil Austin, uses a Just-in-Time Teaching structure, with pre-class preparation and quizzes, then activities, worksheets, and clicker questions in class. We have modified this course over the years as we gather evidence about student learning of key concepts, in particular from pre-post assessments. And (2) a massive open online course (MOOC) called Climate Literacy (CL): Navigating Climate Change Conversations, co-developed with Sarah Burch with support from UBC. CL was my first foray into distance education and I attempted to incorporate CWSEI principles into the course design, namely, articulating learning goals, creating assessments aligned with those goals, and designing or selecting activities that would help participants reach the goals. Based on feedback surveys, the alignment worked for participants. I am transferring the Climate Science portion of CL to the EdX platform, to launch in September 2015.
Curriculum Development and Pedagogical Innovation Highlights: The combination of my experience with CWSEI and my interest in the teaching and learning of climate science has spawned innovations in my classroom and collaborations with teachers and researchers both at UBC and at other universities. In 2009, I (and others at UBC) began a collaboration with faculty at the University of Hawaii (Jane Schoonmaker) and Kauai Community College (Stephen Taylor) to define common learning goals that we could all use in our lower-level climate science courses. The next step in that work was to develop assessment questions targeting those goals, on which I have now iterated several times, including involving an undergraduate thesis student (2013-14). This collaboration opened an opportunity for me to interview students in Hawaii (and at UBC and at Sea Education Association) during my sabbatical year (2011-12), to elicit student thoughts about Earth’s climate system. These interviews revealed a lack of systems thinking among undergraduates, information that has led me to incorporate more deliberate practice with systems thinking into my climate courses. I subsequently (2012) began a collaboration with Anne Gold (University of Colorado-Boulder) to develop aligned learning goals, assessments and activities designed to help students move toward more expert-like mental models of the greenhouse effect. The activities include worksheets and simulations, and the assessment includes a “concept sketch” (not a concept map) that asks students to generate an annotated drawing representing their ideas about the greenhouse effect. All materials were tested in my classes at UBC, helping inform future iterations of these lessons and assessments. Evaluation of the concept sketches reveals the most common student ideas about the greenhouse effect and the most common gaps. Anne Gold and I have now also joined with two additional researchers to collectively work on developing and validating climate science assessment questions, with the goal to publish a valid and reliable assessment for key climate concepts. Last, one of my most satisfying recent projects has been to co-author a book, with Sarah Burch, called “Understanding Climate Change: Science, Policy and Practice” (University of Toronto Press, 2014). In it we attempt to mesh climate science with relevant solutions, all within a systems dynamics framework, in an accessible way.
