Teacher’s notes This resource is designed to hook students into the topic of food & restaurants. Though burgers & fries may not be the first thing that comes to mind when talking about food in Spanish speaking countries, it is chosen for some specific reasons: many students will be familiar with the topic—so familiar that we can dive in and not have to use much English to support the activity it’s based on an actual Five Guys menu from Spain—and it’s a busy place! students are likely to work in food service as a first job—this will help to equip them with the skills to do their job in two languages In my classes, we talked a little bit through the first activity, but then encouraged students to work in small groups to navigate the rest of the tasks at their pace. Estimated time for the activity is 60-90 minutes. In addition to the interpretive tasks, students will also work on some comparison and contrast with similar restaurants in their home communities. We will also touch on math as we compare prices and money conversion from euros to USD. For extension activities, students can role play ordering in the restaurant and/or write/record their order with details.
