Fall 2014 Dedication of the Paul Gerber Memorial Bench
It was a bittersweet Rally Day Sunday, September 7th
, at Solon Community Church as
everyone gathered to officially dedicate a new bench and garden to honor Paul Ger-
ber. Paul was a long standing dedicated member of the church and was instrumental
in the success of our Christian Ed committee particularly with the youth, for many
years. His wife, Susan as well as sons Jason and Bryan each shared special memories
of Paul as well as a little unexpected magic. The project was the final phase of son Ja-
son’s Eagle Scout requirements and had been discussed with his Dad just prior to his
untimely passing of cancer. Paul was well known for bringing joy to many sharing his
love of magic with children and adults at many local events over the years

ORDINARY PEOPLE-EXTRAORDINARY LIVES
PERHAPS YOU? Over the summer, my preaching topics were a little differ-ent from the usual. I shared the life and spiritual stories of several biblical characters. We know their names and perhaps a few legends about them, but do we really know who they were? And, have we thought that there might be similarities between their lives and ours? I enjoyed doing the biblical and biographical research and learned a great deal. What do you know about: the
Queen of Sheba, Job, Mary Magdalene, Jonah, Esther, or David? Perhaps you have seen one of the Hollywood version portrayals of the Queen of Sheba. If so, you probably think her main attributes were her sultriness and beauty. Not really! Sheba traveled a long distance on camel so that she could meet the famed man of wisdom, Solomon, and ask him questions to assess his wisdom. Quite a feat for anyone, especially a woman, of those times. And then, there was Job. We all know the expression the “patience of Job.” Was he really all that patient and accepting of anything thrust upon him? Job was a righteous man of incredible faith, so much faith that at times he dared to chal-lenge God about the suffering he had to endure at the whim of Satan . His friends kept suggesting that he must have committed some egregious sins-now that takes patience to hear that from your friends. Job knew that he could speak directly to God. In the end, because of his faith and courage, his wellbeing was restored to him. Just about everyone “knew” that Mary Magdalene was a “practitioner of the world’s oldest profession.” Did you know there is nothing in the Bible that even suggests that? Another one of those questionable legends. What we do know about Mary Magdalene is that she was as faithful a follower of Jesus as any of the named disciples. We also know that Mary, in the Gospel of John, was the first to observe that Jesus had risen from the dead, because she was courageous enough to visit Jesus’ tomb while his other followers were in hiding for their safety.

From the Pastor (Con’t)
Jonah really wasn’t swallowed by a whale-just a big fish. That’s a minor correction to the legend. Jonah’s story is really a reminder that when God calls us to go somewhere for a purpose, even if we at first head in the ex-act opposite direction, as Jonah did, God will in the end prevail. Jonah just wasted time trying to run away from the task God set before him. Like it our not, he did go to Ninevah! Esther was a Jewish woman chosen, because of her beauty, to be Queen in a foreign land. She lived in disguise until her people, the Jews, were about to be slaughtered. Then, because she was in a place “for such a time as this” and realized that she could make the difference, used her position, courage and wit to save her people. And David…perhaps one of the most complex figures in the Bible. Was he a young shepherd boy, the tiny defender of his people against the gi-ant Goliath, a musician, a writer of many of the psalms that we use in wor-ship, a king, a leader who took advantage of his position to get another man’s wife, the head of the household of God from which the Messiah will come? All of the above.! The story of David reminds me that if God could use David because of his greatness and in spite of his sinfulness, God is willing and able to work with just about everyone. Ordinary people who rose to extraordinary opportunities to serve God and God’s plans to redeem the world. Might we be those ordinary people who live extraordinary lives in our time. Blessings, Rev. Wood P.S. Are there other biblical figures you would like to know more about? If so, I will from time to time focus my sermons on our spiritual ancestors. Please let me know.

News from the Choir Loft
Welcome back to our choir. We hope you are well rested after your summer off.
There is a new face in a choir robe. Tom Oleksiak, the newest member of our
church family, has joined the choir. He has a wonderful voice.
We remember just a couple of years ago when Kaley Ann Voorhees sang in our choir as she was completing Aurora High School. Kaley has just opened as the alternate Christine in Phantom of the Opera on BROADWAY! We can say, “We knew her when.” Congratulations to Kaley.
On the fourth Sunday of Advent, December 21, the choir
will perform Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi. It should be beauti-
ful—let’s all support our choir.
Claire Mulvaney will be appearing in Oliver at Chagrin Valley Little
Theater. The show will run from November 14th—December 14th on
Friday and Saturday nights at 8 PM and Sundays 11/23, 11/30 & 12/14
at 2 PM .
