1st in Wessex League

Our story- The club was founded at a Meeting held in Abbotts Auction Mart in Old Christchurch Road by eight enthusiastic gentlemen presided over by Alderman J Nethercoate (later to become Mayor of Bournemouth) on 11 September 1875 and is one of the oldest clubs in the country being founder Members of the Football Association, the Hampshire F.A. and the Bourne-mouth F.A. The club was among founder members of the Hampshire League adopting the colour poppy red in season 1895/6 from green and white hoops (following the merger with Bournemouth Wanderers), since then being known as the Poppies. Up to joining the Wessex League in 1986 had played entirely in the Hampshire League, except for a short spell at the turn of the 20th century. The Wessex League Championship has remained elusive but we have come close on two occasions with a 3rd place in 1990/91 under the guidance of Tommy Taylor and runners up spot in 1994/5 to Fleet Town when Alex Pike was the manager. The first piece of silverware for a number of years arrived in 2010/11, in the 25th Wessex League season, in the shape of the League Cup, with a 1-0 win over Winchester City. 2011/12 saw the team reach the FA Vase Quar-ter Final for the first time- going out 0-2 in a home reverse fixture against West Auckland Town.

2014/15 saw just one reward from the season, and that was collecting the

22nd Soccer Club Swap Shop 1st place for the League (42nd nationally).

GROUND REGULATIONS

Bournemouth Football Club shall grant admission to patrons and the right to re-main in the ground providing that the following conditions are met:

• All spectators shall comply with any instruction given by a club official or member of staff.

• Spectators shall not trespass on the playing area.

• Spectators shall not climb on any building, wall.

• Spectators shall not use obscene, racist or indecent language or make offen-

sive or insulting gestures.

• Spectators may only consume or possess alcohol within the clubhouse.

• Spectators shall not throw coins or other missiles at the pitch.

• Spectators shall be responsible for any minors that they have brought to the ground or clubhouse.

• All spectators shall pay an entry fee where appropriate.

Those wishing to use the clubhouse who are not members must make them-selves known to the bar staff or a member of the committee and sign the mem-bers book. Any fee paid upon entering the ground will include temporary mem-bership.

Bournemouth got back to winning ways after defeating

Amesbury Town 2-0 on Tuesday.

An own goal and a Martin Warren header were enough to end the Poppies winless streak

and get them a second league win of the season.

The previous game had seen the Poppies on the end of an 8-0 thrashing at Lymington.

They were quick off the blocks and took the lead in just the fourth minute.

Jonathan Efedje got on to the end of a through ball just before Amesbury goalkeeper

Felix Davies, and his cut back hit the knee of a defender before going on.

The Blues almost conceded a second own goal just a minute later. A attempted clear-

ance ricocheted off a another defender and almost crossed the line before being hacked

away.

Amesbury did almost get an equaliser soon after as Osamu Allman ran through on goal.

Thankfully, Sam Jones was alert to deny the striker.

It had been a breathless opening ten minutes, and Amesbury did slowly grow into the

game after that.

Luke Greenway had a shot deflected wide, while Ant Croucher forced Jones into a save

with his 30-yard effort.

Warren went close when heading over from a free-kick, whilst Adam Holloway hit a thun-

derous effort just over the crossbar after having acres of space to run in on goal.

Owen Holloway then curled into the arms of Jones, before Amesbury captain Chris Mor-

ris headed narrowly over from a corner.

Bournemouth ended out the half with Liam House stinging the palms of Davies, whilst

Allman curled over from the left-hand side.

Amesbury had threatened on numerous occasions in the first half, and Poppies needed

to reassert themselves in the game, and thankfully they did five minutes into the second

half.

A superb corner was whipped on to the head of Warren who crashed in an effort off the

crossbar.

It was the two goal cushion that they needed, and the following ten minutes should have

yielded more goals for them.

Davies was on top form to stop a Kinge-Phillips volley and a powerful shot from House.

Amesbury then pressed for a way back in, as Greenway shot wide from an ambitious 35

yards and Lewis Harvey brilliantly blocked two sharp efforts from Adam Holloway. The

rest of the game passed with relatively little incident with “Poppies” securing all 3

points.

BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY. Founded in 1935

After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the Club joined the Southampton

Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Sen-

ior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were

Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the

Club applied to join the Hampshire League and made their debut in Division Three West

in the 1950/1 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move

into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons

but were relegated at the end of 1959/60.

Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in

1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the Hamp-

shire League reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as

runners up promotion was secured to Division Two.

After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhaul-

ing run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in

the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club estab-

lished itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes

including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8.

With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to

compete against the best in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the

new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as

ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long

lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the re-

quired standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a play-

ing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams and the enthusiastic Commit-

tee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to

this day.

The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds

ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted.

The Club’s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight

Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 sea-

sons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1 the club were

relegated to the new Division 2 in 2004.

BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY

The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the

FA Adult Standard Charter. 7

The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top divi-

sion of the Wessex League under the guidance of Jon Gittens. Jon continued for a 2nd

season finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11

season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the team eventually

finishing in 14th position and 16th in the subsequent season.

The Club had in incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, win-

ning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying

round of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Hastings United, and reaching the last 32 of the FA

Vase.

In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a num-

ber of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the

club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager’s role mid-way through the sea-

son, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th.

2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team who started off

brightly but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn’t

quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5th in the league and

were Russell Cotes Cup winners.

Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the

team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a

defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished

runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup, losing heavily to defending champions, Team

Solent, made it to the 3rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and

were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup.

After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club sur-

passed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18,

winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town

and benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 Leagues, gaining promotion for the first

time to the Southern League. Season 2017/18 also saw two appearances at St Marys in

both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on

both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club

also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the rec-

ord in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32 but eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a

midweek replay.

Success continued in 2018/19 with the Club winning Southern League South Division

One and narrowly losing in the semi final of the Southern League Cup. Success on the

field of play together with hard work behind the scenes in connection with Ground Grad-

ing requirements has enabled another piece of Club history to be created with promotion

to the Southern League South Premier Division.

Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club

made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the

1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a

league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a

replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15

minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.
