1) User Documentation

User documentation can be found in the docs folder on the AssureID CD-ROM. These documents are also installed along with the product and will be accessible via the Start ->All Programs->AssureID->Documentation program menu.

2) Installation

See the AssureID Sentinel User’s Guide for detailed instructions on installing the software. It is very important that all pre-installation and installation steps be followed.

The installation is started by executing the setup.exe program.

After successfully installing AssureID, the software must be activated using a valid license key provided by Acuant. Please see the user’s guide for detailed instructions on activating the software after installation.

3) Software Changes and Fixes

The following major changes and/or fixes have been made to the software:

A major enhancement to the AssureID Sentinel software licensing system was

- This release is being shipped as a full release and an update (EXE) that can be used to upgrade from V4.4.4200 and later.

- A fix was made to prevent a potential conflict that prevented the Windows Certificate Propagation Service from operating.

- An update to the 3M Page Reader SDK is included that includes minor fixes related to document cropping and RFID support.

- Resolved an issue with DocumentWriter where a significant delay could occur during the processing of a document for documents that support additional light sources, such as coaxial, and those images are not submitted via the DocumentWriter interface.

- The i-Dentify Drivers installation package has been updated to include support for the latest revision of the ID-150 (revision 4). Please see the i-Dentify Drivers release notes for details on specific changes.

- Localization for the Czech Republic was added.

- The Reveal ID application was enhanced to include alert dispositions in the document transaction report and more accurately display document type information for documents with an Unknown or Other code name.

- Improvements were made to OCR data capture accuracy that impacted a large number of document types.

- Given the recent acquisition of AssureTec, all company-related branding in the product was changed reflect the Acuant name.

- The AssureID system tray icon was changed.

- The barcode parsing software was updated to properly handle the barcode format for the 2016 series of the Colorado Driver’s License.

- The following 49 document types, representing 14 countries and 7 US states, territories, or Canadian provinces were added to the Identification Reference Library in this release:

- AssureID Sentinel now officially supports the Windows 10 operating system.

- The AssureID License Server has been enhanced with the following new features:

o If required, a License Server can now optionally be directed to another License Server to allow them to be chained together so that licensing-related traffic can be proxied using multiple “hops”.

o A Verify button has been added to the License Server system tray applet to facilitate connectivity testing to confirm that either the AssureID central license activation service or the upstream AssureID License Server can be reached.

- A fix was made to ensure that the AssureID Sentinel can properly install and operate in a Windows environment with FIPS 140-2 security policies enabled.

- Several stability-related fixes were made to ensure proper recovery and/or error handling with device-related operations. In most cases, these issues were exhibiting themselves either as software hangs or time outs while performing a document transaction.

- A fix was made to correct an issue where images captured on the ARH PRMc were blurry and/or doubled.

- The timeout for reading e-Passport and e-ID contactless chips has been increased from 15 seconds to 20 seconds to properly handle documents with very slow chips that were exceeding this timeout.

- An issue was fixed where removing a document from an ID-150 or ID-1501 as the scan was initiating could result in a 60-second delay before the document transaction would complete.

- The 3M Page Reader SDK components were upgraded to V3.3.3.10, which included the following changes:

o A fix was made to improve document cropping in cases where the document was not cropped properly, including cases where a PDF417 barcode on a passport resulted in an undercrop and where some ID cards were either undercropped or overcropped.

o A fix was made that will result in improved chip read performance for some types of documents.

o A fix was made to handle improperly encoded DG2 files found in some passports.

- Improvements were made to OCR data capture accuracy that impacted a large number of document types, primarily with the bearer’s name field.

- The following 44 document types, representing 17 countries and 9 US states, territories or Canadian provinces were added to the Identification Reference Library in this release:

Please see the release notes included with the package for specific update information.

It is not necessary to update the device drivers except to take advantage of new hardware devices or to correct a specific issue addressed with the update.

- This release is being shipped as a full release only. Due to the size and number of functional changes in this release, an update (EXE) that can be used to upgrade to this version from a previous version will not be available.

- New functionality, enhancements and fixes in this version are listed below:

o Hebrew character recognition support has been added to the standard AssureID Sentinel installation package.

o Upgraded the primary OCR engine used in the software. Internal regression testing demonstrates equivalent and in some cases improved OCR performance and accuracy.

o Device support has been added for the ARHungary Combo Smart kiosk scanner.

o Adjusted the white light gamma correction for 3M AT9000 MK2 (PV60) and 3M AT9000 MK2 10MPn (PV61) readers to ensure optimal classification and authentication performance.

o Fixed an issue where an aborted document insertion into an i-Dentify ID-1xx document reader caused the device to become unresponsive.

o Enabled PACE/SAC support on RF-equipped 3M and ARH document readers. For documents that are protected under this access control scheme, only the MRZ password unlock method is supported.

o Fixed an issue where document samples that only contain images from the back of the document were not properly processed when using the AssureIDSession.TriggerNewDocumentFromSample SDK method.

o Fixed an issue where some document field values were not correctly decoded when using the AssureIDSession.LoadDocumentFromSample SDK method.

o Updated specific 3M runtime components to address the following issues:

Fixed issue with the first RF read failing if the document is already present in the reader.

Add image distortion correction for CR5400 document reader images.

2D barcode read improvements for some documents.

Fixed RF extended access control (EAC) issue when reading certain documents that contain a private key without expected parameters.

o Updated AR Hungary runtime components to version 2.1.5-26E.

o Fixed an issue where command-line license activation was not functioning correctly.

- New functionality, enhancements and fixes in this version are listed below.

o A major enhancement to the AssureID Sentinel software licensing system is included in this release. In most cases this should be transparent, but there are situations and environments where action may be required to ensure uninterrupted operation. The enhancements to the licensing system include the following new features:

Users will have the ability to deactivate an AssureID Sentinel workstation themselves, reclaiming the license seat for use on another workstation.

Activated licenses will now include information regarding the software maintenance period, meaning that it will be possible to check when a workstation license maintenance period will be expiring. Maintenance expiration does not terminate your ability to use the AssureID Sentinel software. However, after software maintenance expires you will no longer have access to up-to-date software and document library updates that allows the product to perform optimally.

Maintenance information will be visible in several ways:

From within the AssureID Sentinel System Tray application, a License tab will be present with all license information, including the maintenance expiration date.

From within the AssureID Sentinel License Activator application.

As the maintenance expiration date approaches, occasional system tray notifications will alert the end user that software maintenance will be expiring. It is possible to disable these notifications via the System Tray application or configuration.

In order to ensure that the software license information remains current, especially regarding the maintenance period, AssureID Sentinel will occasionally contact the AssureID central license activation service to refresh the license details. This will allow for automatic propagation of extended maintenance dates after renewal or if new features or device types have been added to a license.

In many environments, Internet access is not available for the workstations upon which AssureID Sentinel is deployed, making it difficult and time-consuming to install and activate the license. Acuant has introduced an AssureID License Server that can be locally-installed and hosted. The AssureID License Server will allow license activations and management to be routed through a local server on your own network. While this server will still require access to the AssureID central licensing activation service via the Internet, when utilized it will no longer be necessary to grant Internet access to all workstations or utilize the email-based manual license activation model.

A new software licensing model has been introduced where the AssureID Sentinel software can be licensed annually. This will complement the current perpetual license model and enable AssureID Sentinel to be licensed on an annual (non-perpetual) basis. Please contact your sales representative for more details.

o Removed support for the ICAO product edition and subscription licenses. License keys issued under these offerings are no longer valid.

o Added the following members to the AssureID SDK. See the help documentation and example applications for usage information and specifics.

o The AssureID DocumentWriter SDK extension API has been significantly enhanced to enable applications to natively participate in duplex (two-sided capture) operations. Duplex participation is achieved by using the new DocumentWriter.Flush method in conjunction with the AssureID SDK AssureIDSession.DocumentFlip and AssureIDSession.DocumentClassified events.

Due to the significance and breaking nature of this enhancement, all DocumentWriter-based applications must be recompiled. Please see the API documentation as well as the included example code for additional details and implementation guidance.

Additionally, the DocumentWriter now accepts both landscape and portrait-oriented images.

o Added capability to emit the original capture device information from the AssureID SDK when processing document samples. During document sample processing, the DocumentInfo.ReaderInfo class will contain the source document reader information.

o Reduced average file size and improved collection and processing performance of document samples.

o Upgraded the 2D barcode recognition engine used in the software. Internal regression testing demonstrates equivalent and in some cases improved recognition performance and accuracy.

o The engine that is used to decode barcode and magnetic stripe data found on various forms of identifications, including but not limited to driver’s licenses, passports and military ID cards has been upgraded to include support for additional documents.

o All AssureID software components are now digitally signed with a SHA2 code signing certificate; to comply with the Microsoft SHA1 certificate deprecation policy.

AssureID SDK application programming notes:

Managed .NET and native C/C++ programming interfaces are available. A native Java interface is planned, but is not yet available.

Images and non-image data may be written in any order.

At a minimum the "White" image from the "Front" of a document is required for a successful document transaction.

All DocumentWriter operations must be completed within 60 seconds, from the time that the instance is opened for use.

The assembly containing the interface (AssureTec.AssureID.Platform.SDK.Extensions.dll) is not installed to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC), does not depend upon the AssureID SDK and may be freely distributed with applications.

Sample applications (C#/C++) are provided that illustrates basic usage. See the SDK documentation included with the software for complete API help.

o Added new capability that will parse names and addresses into separate document fields, including when OCR is the only available data source and where the data has not already been separated for machine readability.


Full name and address parsing is performed on supported US and Canada national, US state and Canadian province documents.

When using a supported full page document reader or flatbed scanner in duplex mode, the DocumentFlip event will be fired either before or after the DocumentClassified event.

Known limitations and issues:

Fraudulent documents that normally fail authentication on an i-Dentify ID-1xx or ID-15xx document reader may not fail when inserted face-down because a near-infrared image from the photo side of the document will not be available.

Fraudulent document detection may be limited when the backside of a document cannot be classified due to poor card quality or condition.

When operating in duplex mode, ID1 e-Identification card contactless chips will not be read on supported full page document readers that are equipped with an RF-reading capability. To work around this issue, duplex mode must be disabled and the document must be inserted MRZ-side first. This issue will be fixed in a future release of the software.

o Fix issue where some early revision 2 i-Dentify ID-1xx desktop document scanners were incorrectly identified as revision 1 devices.

o Enhanced the AssureID Java SDK to enable usage within browser-based Java applets and Java Web Start applications.

o The deployment requirements of the AssureID Java SDK have been simplified for all Java-based applications. Java developers no longer need to deploy the AssureIDJavaPlatformSDK.dll component with applications. The AssureIDJavaPlatformSDK.jar file now contains x86 and x64 versions of this component which will be automatically extracted at runtime. This change is backward-compatible with existing Java SDK applications.

o A JavaAppletExample SDK sample application is now included to demonstrate basic usage of the AssureID Java SDK within a browser-based Java applet along with basic JavaScript interaction. This example was authored using the NetBeans IDE 7.2.1 with the Java Development Kit (JDK) 7 update 40.

o Added stability improvement to ID-15xx document reader to detect and recover from firmware hang conditions. If a firmware hang is detected, the device will be automatically restarted.

To take advantage of this improvement, the i-Dentify Document Reader Device Drivers package that is included with this version must be used.

o Fixed a significant memory leak in the Reveal ID document authentication application (V2.0). This memory leak only affected users with the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 installed and did not affect users with the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 installed.

o Fixed an internal threading issue in the AssureID service where in rare cases, service unresponsiveness or unexpected SDK application behavior could occur.

o Fixed an issue in the AssureID installation package where the software could not be completely uninstalled if it was originally installed using a developer license key; or was later changed from a developer to a runtime license key.

o Enabled support for the Fujitsu fi-60 scanner by default in the AssureID service configuration file (DAPServiceConfig.xml).

o Fixed an issue in System Tray application Logging settings page where the "Limit Size" checkbox state was not properly saved.

o This release includes the next generation Reveal ID document authentication application (V2.0). It offers a simple, workflow-based user experience with a modern look-and-feel that is suitable for use in turnkey environments where a custom developed AssureID SDK application is not available.

The majority of the features and functions available in current versions of the Reveal ID and Assure-Alert document authentication applications are included in this version; and it serves as the successor to the Assure-Alert document authentication application.

o Fixed an issue where the AssureID service may become unresponsive while recovering from an active document reader fault or error condition.

o Corrected a structural error in the MMMReaderSettings.xml configuration file that was introduced in the V4.3.3250 release. This enables proper loading of ultraviolet image capture settings when using a 3M AT9000 (PV40) document reader.

o Improved the detection reliability of potentially stuck or jammed cards in the feeder path of the ID-15xx document reader and other supported TWAIN-based devices.

o Added improvement to ID-15xx document reader and other supported TWAIN-based devices to handle failure case where a TWCC_NOMEDIA condition code is returned from the capture process. This condition code can be returned if a user inserts and quickly removes the document immediately after the capture process is initiated.

o Added an "Events" tab to the AssureID Tutorial application. This can enable customers and solution integrators to gain a quicker and better understanding of the AssureID SDK event workflow.

o Added a "Get Active Readers" option to the AssureID Tutorial application "Service" menu. This will display all document readers that are managed by AssureID at any given time along with their attributes.

o When a card becomes physically jammed in a ID-15xx document reader, the number of ejection attempts that are performed to clear the jam has been increased from one to three.

o Added additional diagnostic information to the AssureID service log file that will record detailed feed path sensor state information when a card becomes physically jammed in a ID-15xx document reader.

In addition, health state diagnostics for all activities that execute on a regularly scheduled polling interval within the AssureID service will now be recorded.

In previous versions of the software, risk factor calculations were solely used to determine the authenticity of a document by verifying whether they exceeded a specific sensitivity-based threshold. The determination of document authenticity is now based on our expert assessment of the reliability of many different types of authentication tests combined in a more sophisticated way.

Because risk factor calculations are no longer used when determining document authenticity, their use in new application development is not recommended. See the note below regarding the deprecation of the various RiskFactor properties in the AssureID SDK.

When a document transaction is complete, the collection of DocumentAlert objects that are returned from the AssureID SDK will be sorted by result, importance and name.

o Simplified and enhanced the document field crosscheck authentication process to compare field values across all distinct sources of document data at one time using an improved comparison algorithm. The process is less sensitive to OCR read errors, will yield more accurate and real-world authentication results while leading to fewer rejections of genuine documents.

In previous versions of the software, multiple DocumentAlert objects were returned from the AssureID SDK for each distinct source of document data.
