Warm Up:
Define the following vocabulary word:
meninges (pg 901)
What do you think meningitis is?1
CHAPTER 35: Nervous System
35-3: Divisions of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System• Central nervous
system – relays messages– processes
information– analyzes
information
The Brain
• Brain: made of neurons
– controls daily operations of human body
– controls homeostasis
– interprets sensory information
• Cerebrum: largest part of brain controls the conscious activities of the body
•Brain Stem: links cerebrum with spinal cord
The Brain
•Cerebellum: coordinates muscle contraction
Thalamus & Hypothalamus
• Thalamus: relays messages
•Hypothalamus: maintains homeostasis
•Pituitary Gland: Regulates puberty
The Spinal Cord
• Spinal Cord: link between the brain & rest of the body
• Reflexes: involuntary movements
• Reflex arc: pathway your reflex impulse travels – knee tapped– sensory receptor sends
impulse to spinal cord– triggers motor neuron-
muscle contracts
The Peripheral Nervous System• SENSORY DIVISION
– Sends impulses from sense organs to central nervous system
• MOTOR DIVISION– Sends impulses
from central nervous system to muscles or glands
– 2 parts• Somatic System• Autonomic System
Ex: sight, touch
Somatic & Autonomic Nervous Systems• Somatic Nervous
System–Activities like
movement of skeletal muscle
–Under conscious control
• Autonomic Nervous System
– Involuntary, unconscious control
– 2 parts• Sympathetic– Helps body respond to stress
• Parasympathetic– Keeps body maintaining
homeostasis
10
Is it a somatic or autonomic?
• Pulling your hand
back from a hot stove

11
Is it a somatic or autonomic?
• Raising your hand

Your Assignment
• Draw a Brain (pg 901)– Include the major parts of the brain: Cerebrum,
Cerebellum, Medulla Oblongata & Spinal Cord.– Include the Important glands within the brain:
Thalamus, Hypothalamus & Pituitary.
• Use color and label everything! This is going to be part of a human body poster, so make sure it is nicely done!
