Thank you for all the beautiful flowers we receive each week!
Dear Parents,
the pile of clothing in our lost property is growing on a daily
basis. The recovered items will be displayed outside the hall
area everyday for you to come and collect items that your
children might have displaced over the past few weeks. Un-
claimed items will be donated to charity at the end of each
term.
Arbor Week is celebrated annually in the first week of September. In this week we are encouraged to reflect on the importance of trees and of keeping our environment as green as possible and to fight climate change. Lucky Bean would like to encourage you to plant Spekboom this year.
The Spekboom is one of the most efficient plants to fight climate change : - they are in indigenous to Eastern Cape - water wise - they can survive on just 350ml water per year!!! -.Spekboom has a photosynthetic mechanism which allows it to adapt to both rainforest-like conditions and semi-arid conditions, making it incredibly adapta-ble and suited to almost any garden. - Spekboom are succulents,so they are always green.
- a mature Spekboom has the ability to "capture" 4 -10 tons of carbon per hectare and absorb it back into plant matter. Excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is one of the main contributors to climate change. You can purchase this incredible plant from your Lucky Bean school shop for the month of September!
THE JOY OF GIVING – SWS SUPPORT OF THE SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT 2019
The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organization that collects Christmas gifts for the socially disadvan-taged children throughout South Africa, by way of a social and community network of families, friends, schools and churches.
This project is instrumental in involving people from all walks of life, especially children together with their par-ents, in giving to children from a distinctly vulnerable social background who may never have received a Christ-mas gift before.
In essence it is therefore also about children learning the joy of giving, by personally choosing and filling the gift boxes, and then decorating and labelling each with the recipient’s name.
Many people have a desire to contribute to their community or do their ‘little bit for charity’, but often don’t know where to start. The Santa Shoebox Project takes pride in channelling all that positive energy and goodwill into something that is credible, achievable, makes a real difference in a specific child’s life and leaves the donor feeling like we have had a positive impact.
“After pledging a Santa Shoebox (SSB) myself in 2016 for the first time, I felt that I could contribute more and I became a sub-coordinator for this land wide initiative in the Helderberg area. Attending the first volunteers meeting, it became clear to me that we, as the Stellenbosch Waldorf School, can be a valuable contributor to this project in several ways and so since 2017, Stellenbosch Waldorf School supports the Santa Shoebox pro-ject.” Leen Van Roey, SWS parent.
In 2017 we made more than 30 children happy with a Christmas box, in 2018 we upped that to 43! We hope we can match that this year!
HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE?
Donations of the following are welcome and can be handed in with Bozena at the Lucky Bean, or Althea at the Reception Office, or via Teacher Brenda in High School.
Soap
Facecloth
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Educational supplies / Stationary
Sweets (non-perishable, no tins, no nuts)
Toys (for smaller children) or gadgets (for teenagers)
High School, Primary and Kindergarten parents can support your class in this initiative by collectively building consciousness and interest in this initiative and donating as a class.
If you prefer to contribute a box as a family, please do so. You can register yourself on the Santa Shoebox Pro-ject Website: http://santashoebox.org.za where you will find more information.
Alternatively for more information please phone the SWS number on 021 8813867, and speak to Cary-Ann.
Thank you to our school community, and to Leen, for being a part of giving to others in our country this Christ-mas. It will make Christmas that extra bit more magical!

Workshops and Events
The South African premiere of Nocturne, written by American playwright and author Adam Rapp, will be directed by Emily Child and performed by Francis Chouler. Francis Chouler is a past pupil of both Michael Oak and Constantia Waldorf School.
NOCTURNE is the honest and unconventionally moving story of a man dealing with the effects of a life altering incident. It is a clear, arresting recol-lection of love, hilarity and pain as well as a boldly inspiring reminder of what it is to be human.
15 years ago, in Joliet, Illinois, a 17 year teenager accidentally runs over and kills his 9 year old sister in a ’69 Buick Electra while driving home from his summer job. The event cracks his life wide open. As the unnamed narrator flees his childhood home to restart his life in a bookshop in New York City, he has nothing but old memories and new books to rebuild his world.
