We’ve invited you here today to talk about a concept that has been bubbling up in many conversations around Brentview for the past year.

Please don’t think of this as a sales pitch or some kind of arm-twisting or coercion, in fact let me know if I begin to sound that way at any point in the presentation. I want to simply share with you something God has laid on my heart, and show you what Brentview’s leadership is envisioning.

For the past several months, Pastor Dave has been preaching about what we can accomplish together, with God’s help, in a YEAR OF IMPACT. The concept I will be sharing with you today is one way that we, as individuals and as a church, can have a greater Impact for the Lord.

During Brentview’s Year of Impact, God is leading us to envision our own ‘BIG IF’

WHAT IF… Brentview was debt free?

We could use more resources to Touch The World for Christ?

We allow God to make an Impact through us?

Please consider this series of ‘WHAT IF’ questions.

-What if the mortgage was already paid out?

-What if we weren’t in debt at all?

-What if the money we have been using to pay INTEREST payments could be used for MISSIONS instead?

-What if, as a part of the congregation, we each sought God’s will in this, and spent serious time in prayer, seeking His direction while we ponder these questions?

Where did it all begin?

2004: BMGF – a God-sized success!

In faith, we asked God to provide: Parking lot

Expanded sanctuary

New ministry & office facilities

By 2004, it had become obvious that we had to do something about our facility, it was aging and was literally bursting at the seams.

First we sought the Lord’s will with regard to our location, and together we found that His will for us was to remain at the “corner of Crowchild Trail and the World”, so a fund was created to raise money for a building expansion program.

In faith we asked the congregation to commit with us to raising $1.8 million dollars, and so the Brentview Ministries Growth Fund or BMGF was born.

The BMGF was a major success by every measure. We learned as a congregation what God can do when we let him. We raised over twice the money we had originally targeted without impacting our annual church budget. We did “Church-in-a-box” together for many months while the work was happening, and in December of 2007 we moved into the beautiful facility we all enjoy today. Surprisingly, the BMGF Fund has lived on. As a part of the building project we had taken out a $2.5 million mortgage, and because people continued to give to the BMGF our mortgage principal has been paid down to the point where just under $1.7 million of principal remains.

The Result: Expanded Facilities and Ministries

Today, we enjoy a modern facility in every respect – almost 28,000 square feet of ministry space, including greatly expanded and purpose-built areas for Children’s Ministries, Missions and Youth Ministries, the addition of ministry spaces we never had before; such as the Chapel and a Prayer Room – and a beautifully refurbished sanctuary with almost 30% more capacity than before.

Our pastors offices, gym/banquet hall and kitchen are all modern and well-equipped, and overall the facility is built to be flexible to multiple uses and last a long, long time.

We truly are blessed with a facility well equipped for ministry.

Q: Where do we go from here and how can the Brentview family enhance its IMPACT for Christ?

A: The IMPACT FUND (IF) - a sequel to the BMGF, featuring:

• A ‘Faith Goal’ of $2,000,000• Accelerating the repayment of Brentview’s mortgage• Two ways to enhance our Missions (Global Discipleship)

outreach over the next four years• A wonderful way to celebrate Brentview’s 50 year

history by setting the stage for the future

I’ll tell you more about each of these features in a minute, but let’s first look at some background details:

[Notes for Page 6 – Where do we go from here?]

How our mortgage worksIf we made minimum payments for the next 15 years we would spend over $900,000 on interest alone

7

Page 14: 1. We’ve invited you here today to talk about a concept that has been bubbling up in many conversations around Brentview for the past year. Please don’t

This graph shows a scenario where we simply keep on making regular mortgage payments without doing anything to accelerate the principal repayment process.

As you can see, in this scenario we pay over 900,000 dollars in interest along the way. A full 35% of our payments would go to interest if we paid our regular monthly payments over the next 15 years.

What IF God enabled Faith Goal of $2M over 3 yrs?

Brentview debt free!

Increased missions IMPACT!

Glory to God!

Page 16: 1. We’ve invited you here today to talk about a concept that has been bubbling up in many conversations around Brentview for the past year. Please don’t

But if we paid down the whole mortgage in the next 2 to 3 years, not only would we be debt-free but the amount of interest we would have to pay would be greatly reduced.

[Optional Comment: In fact, by paying out the mortgage of $1.7 million with principal payments of roughly $566,000 per year for three years, we could save over $750,000 in interest!]

The funds raised by the Impact Fund Campaign would enhance Brentview’s Missions’ impact in two ways…

First of all, we’re going to start making more of an Impact in our Missions effort RIGHT NOW!

For every dollar that is donated to the Impact Fund, 10% will go directly to a Missions project fund administered by our Global Discipleship Team led by Steve McCready. [90% will go to reducing Brentview’s mortgage debt]

Secondly, as we pay down the debt, the savings we realize from reduced interest payments would be added to our annual Missions budget, for four years, under the guidance and direction of the Elders

As debt ‘bucket’ drains, the Missions ‘bucket’ fills…

Brentview has a rich history of supporting Missions & we may soon be able to do more

2011-2012 Missions Budget

Jerusalem = $52,900

Samaria = $55,400

Ends of the Earth = $43,300

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Matthew 28: 19-20a

This is our current Missions budget. As you can see, it is split into three parts – let me explain for just a moment what these terms mean…

“Jerusalem” are the ministries and Outreach Events we support locally. Here are a few examples:Mustard Seed, Calgary Pregnancy Centre, Inn From the Cold, Jesus Loves You Society, Community Outreach Events (Stampede Breakfast) and Quick Response Requests; which are urgent funding needs including disaster relief.

“Samaria” are ministries we participate in through our associations as a church, including:North American Baptist Conference, Camp Caroline, Alberta Baptist Association and the Taylor University and Edmonton Baptist Seminary. [as an example – 90 first time decisions were made at Camp Caroline last summer!

“Ends of the Earth” is Overseas Missions:Nine foreign missionaries, Pastors in India (under RIMI), White Cross Medical Supplies, the NAB sponsored Bible School in Russia and an allowance for additional foreign missions support as may be identified in any given year

• To be a tangible element of Brentview’s “Year of IMPACT” – Impacting our world takes our time, our talent, AND our treasure.•A Faith Goal of $2,000,000 – knowing that this is what it will take to achieve what we can see in front of us – the mortgage repayment and a new legacy Missions project fund. God’s vision can take this above and beyond a Faith Goal as experienced with BMGF…•Emphasis on “Giving”, NOT “Fundraising” – God is in command of all our resources. Our greatest duty is obedience – then he will do more than we can ask or think.•Changing our mindset as a congregation towards giving – to let giving become as much a natural part of our worship as music, prayer and reading the Word are.•Providing stewardship support [faith based budget course (‘Good $ense’) and estate planning seminar on Feb. 18th and 19th) – making use of practical tools to manage our resources for His glory - just as Jesus taught with the Parable of the Talents which featured people making wise choices with their financial resources…•‘Over and Above’ giving beyond the Church Budget – Giving to the IF Campaign is not in place of our regular giving toward church operating and ministry costs, but a sacrificial offering above general giving.•Increasing our Missions budget while decreasing debt – the ultimate response to the Great Commission, freeing ourselves from whatever may deter or entangle us so that we are ready to do the good works He has planned for us to do…

IMPACT our community, nation & world...

STARTING NOW!

This Missions Project aspect of the Impact Fund allows us to make a substantial difference and Impact Brentview’s Missions’ outreach, right away, without having to wait three years until the campaign is complete. It’s the formal kick-off – a legacy project that adds a new dimension to our commitment to Touch the World. That commitment will continue to grow as our debt decreases over the next three years, but we can now start things off with a “bang”.

What should I give?

After first seeking His will…

Give only as God has led you to respond.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.Proverbs 3:5-6

This is a question that is completely between you and God. I would urge you to pray and seek His will before responding with a pledge.

As we experienced with the BMGF, gifts of varying sizes can quickly add up, no matter what a donor’s personal financial circumstances may be. Our goal is to have as many people in the Brentview family as possible participating in this campaign, regardless of the amount they are able to give.

For example, if someone decided just to give up just one Starbucks or Timmies coffee per week (say about $3 per week), over three years it would amount to a gift of $500.

A weekly gift of about $100 per week (or just over $400 per month) would become $15,000 over three years. Perhaps this saving could be achieved by keeping a vehicle for 3 more years before buying a new car.

Another way of looking at this is to break down donation amounts into a chart with a range of weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual donations, just to show what can be achieved over a three year period. A three year giving plan can be a useful in setting personal budgets and can be one way to demonstrate our heart’s desire to follow God’s call to honor Him with our financial resources.

Of course, one time donations are also welcome, along with donations of marketable securities or memorial donations. We also want to take this opportunity to encourage our congregation to consider the ministries of Brentview as part of their Estate Plan.

Unequal Gifts BUT

Equal Sacrifice

What will it take to meet ourFaith Goal of $2,000,000?

Looking at what it will take to reach our ‘Faith Goal’ of $2,000,000 we can consider the analogy of our church family building a huge rock pile. Many of us have pebbles, some have rocks and a few have boulders.

Those with limited personal budgets, might be able to pledge 100, 500 or even a 1000 dollars. But when these are added to many other such pledges, together they would become a very significant part of the rock pile.

Some can afford more, and a few can afford much more.

We hope that everyone at Brentview will be led to respond, with unequal gifts but equal sacrifice.

Breaking the ‘rock pile’ analogy down to dollars and cents is what this next chart does. It gives us one example of how many gifts of varying sizes can work together to achieve our ‘Faith Goal’.

Again, it’s our prayer that as many of our people as possible will respond to this challenge as God leads and enables each one of us.

If and when you are ready to respond, we urge you to communicate this by completing a confidential Impact Fund Response Card. These are available at the Information Desk in the church foyer. Only two members of the Impact Fund Finance team will be recording the response information in order to maintain strict confidentiality. We also want to be sure that everyone understands that these pledges are not a contract but a good faith indication of your intent to honor your pledge based on your current financial circumstances and as God continues to enable you in the future.

God’s call on Brentview, which is a call to each of us individually, is the call of obedience to Him – to trust that He will enable us to give sacrificially to advance His kingdom.

We have such overwhelming evidence of His grace over the past 50 years, and now hear a renewed call to touch the world outside our doors for Him.

Won’t you join us again in seeking His face and asking for His direction in how each of us should contribute our part in fulfilling this step in His Great Commission?

THANK YOU FOR YOU TIME AND ATTENTION. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
