WHAT A FANTASTIC FESTIVAL!

MORE ON PG. 8 & 9

This year’s Taunton Festival of The Arts featured an extremely high standard from the 600 plus competitors as usual. Once again, we were very well represented by the huge number of students that take Speech and Drama in the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School.

This year’s Festival which ran from Sunday 5th March through to Friday 10th March, began with the Taunton Young Performer Competition. This always attracts the very best students from the County and this year the standard was higher than ever. Students have to perform a themed recital of acting and verse pieces linked with explanations and introductions. In the Junior category Matilda Clarke, Charlotte Taysom and Rosie Taysom all performed brilliantly and were

only just pipped to the post by the eventual winner. The senior category was won by TS student Cassie grace, what a great way to get the Festival started.

Day two saw TPS have another set of results. We had some really entertaining and confident performances from our Year 3 and 4 poets, readers and actors. Pictured are Aryan

Sharma, Jacob Huntley and James Wilson who gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in prepared reading. Aryan also picked up another medal with his 2nd place in the solo acting. A good day's work!

Just as it seemed that Spring had sprung and the holidays were approaching, we have suddenly been swept with a wave of coughs, cold and winter flu bugs in school this week. Hardest hit it seems, has been the staff;

some of whom have had to take time off work despite their best intentions of getting in to support the pupils’ learning.

Cover arrangements have been in place, as you’d expect, in order that we retain the continuity of the curriculum, but I would implore you to consider whether it is wise to send your sick child in to school when a day of recovery might just prevent the spread of germs when they all come together.

Duncan Sinclair, Prep School Headmaster

THE HEAD HAS HIS SAY... by Duncan Sinclair

HOW DO WE TEACH BRITISH VALUES?Recently I have been discussing

British Values with my staff and we have talked about how we don’t need to plan specific ‘lessons’ to teach children British values – they should be included

in everything we do. Britain has undergone rapid economic and social change in the last few decades and we live in an increasingly diverse society. We need to teach our children that it is possible to live together peacefully, each of them a valuable part of our multicultural world.

So what does this look like in practice at our school? Let's look at Valentine’s Day as an example. There are a number of different things we can do:

• Looking at Valentine’s Day cards in the local shops - British values = making links in the local community

• Designing your own cards to give to family and friends - British values = valuing family

• Talking about how children across the world will be sending cards to their family and friends - teach children = we live in a multicultural and diverse world

• Communicating to parents that we are making cards and providing some resources so they can help their child learn more about hearts, flowers, colours etc at home - Early Years Foundation Stage = working with parents. All the teaching we deliver must be relevant to and

respectful of the individual children’s learning needs – there is little point making Diwali candles with a one year old who will probably eat them – but everyone can be involved in making a big flower picture after an outing and learn more about nature and the natural world.

Here are some examples of how British Values are embedded in our day-to-day curriculum:

• We teach children to be kind, helpful and respectful of others;

• We teach children to be part of their local community;• We plan to celebrate festivals and mark special days

from the world around us;• We teach the children about compromise – that some

of us believe one thing… some of us believe something totally different… but we can all play together in the same house (or group setting) and respect each other = British values – teaching about similarities and differences.

TPS NEW APPOINTMENT: MR CHRIS COLEMAN, DEPUTY HEAD

I have great pleasure in announcing that Mr Chris Coleman has been appointed as the Deputy Headmaster of the Prep School from September 2017. Mr Coleman joined TPS in September 2013 and it was not long before he was asked to join the Senior Management Team in the role of ‘Senior Master’. Mr Coleman has made a great success of assisting in the management of the school and has proved himself to be an excellent teacher of Computing and Boys’ Games. Mr Coleman and Mrs Coleman are the Houseparents to the

boarders of Thone House and have two children in the school, Harvey in Year 2 and Oscar in Year 4. It is the perfect time for Mr Coleman to step up to the role of Deputy Head and all of us at TPS are looking forward to working with a professional of such high calibre who knows the school so well. I do hope that you are able to attend our evening on 21st March, when you will of course have the chance to meet Mr Coleman with the rest of next September’s Senior Management Team. Please RSVP to Liz Verge ([email protected]) if you are able to attend and we very much hope to see you there.

Read more about this evening event on page 6.

MESSAGE FROM THE INCOMING PREP HEAD, MR EDWARDS

CHRIS COLEMAN

Last week, Year 3 had fun consolidating their knowledge on how rocks are formed by carrying out a fun experiment using chocolate!

Following a detailed set of instructions, (to link in with their English work) they used grated milk and white chocolate to recreate Sedimentary, Metamorphic & Igneous rocks! We then cut through a Malteser bar, Dairy Milk bar and Mars Bar, to see the various layers, to make the visual comparison! It was a fun way to round-off our work on rocks and hopefully, the children will remember these technical rock names in the future, through a practical learning experience.

More fun science to come next term. Well done 3F!Bryony Finch, Teacher Year 3

SISTER ACT

GERMAN WEATHER SPINNERS

Here is a picture of Matilda Clarke with some of the cast of Sister Act who performed at the Regal Theatre in Minehead last weekend. The variety show was in memory of one of the cast members - Louise Doolan, in order to raise money for Hope for Tomorrow, a charity which funds a mobile chemotherapy bus.

Matilda had been busy rehearsing a number of difficult songs, singing the alto line to strengthen the harmonies.

Well done Matilda. A wonderful cause to be involved with.

Thursday was a really busy day at the Festival with over 8 solid hours of classes. Huge congratulations to Millie and Emily, and Jack and Archie who won 1st and 3rd place in the Year 5 and Under Duo Verse Speaking. This was followed by TPS winning the Group Speaking with Book of Shadows and receiving Joint 2nd with Horrible Headmonster and History Test. Our actors in Year 5 won 1st and

3rd place with Wind In The Willows and Cafe Rhyme. We also won 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Group Acting with Bullies, New Shoes and Grounded. Ailani came 3rd in the prepared Reading for Year 7 and under and we finished the day with a 1st place in the Duo Improvisation from Maddy Marsh and Annabelle Mellenchip. Despite all these fantastic results the highlight for me was seeing those children who were not placed but conquered their fears and performed brilliantly to a really appreciative audience. The knowledge that you 'can do it' will stay with you and me for a very long time. Well done! We are very proud of every competitor who had the courage to stand up and take part. A great day.

The fun at the Festival continued on the Wednesday with some more fantastic performances and results from our young performers! Special mention today to our incredible Year 2 students performing 'All Work' and our Year 3 students with 'Festival Fiasco', both groups performing with confidence and style to gain joint 1st place in the Year 3 and under Group Speaking (picture on front page). We also had Cassie Grace winning Year 10/11 Sight Reading and Prepared Reading classes and gaining 2nd place in the Year10/11 Solo Acting. Adi Sharma came 2nd and Sophia

Wilson and Max Davis 3rd in the Year 7-9 Sight Reading. Flora Collier came 2nd in the Year 9 Verse Speaking and Oliver Tucker and Robbie Burns won the Year 8/9 Duo Verse Speaking. Sophia Wilson gained another medal with 1st place in the Performance Poetry and Tom Yap, Barnaby Webber and Archie Billings won Year 9 Group Speaking. Our last class today was the challenging TV Newsreading Class for Year 9 which was won by Ben Pomeroy. A truly excellent set of results, not forgetting all those other competitors who performed so well in their classes. You all made your teachers, parents and school very proud. Well done!

The Festival week finished as it started, with more great performances and results from our students. Congratulations to George, Josh and Orlando for 2nd place in the Year 7 Group Speaking. Also to Esme, Ranuga and Sophie for coming 1st and joint 2nd in the Year 8 Verse Speaking. Sophie also won the Year 8 Prepared Reading closely followed by Leila who came 2nd. Daisy Downham came 2nd in the Year8/9 Solo Acting and we had some great results in the Year 8/9 Duo Acting with Calum and Max coming 1st and Charlotte and Rosie and Adi and Ben coming Joint 3rd. TPS also won the group acting and Upper Sixth IB student, Agnese Sartor came 3rd in the Shakespeare Sixth Form class. The Festival was rounded off with Mr Kirby and Mr Riggs performing in the Open Duo Class, luckily they received an

Outstanding adjudication!!

For the Speech and Drama teachers, Festivals are not about medals and cups, although we all love a bit of silver! They are about giving all our students the opportunity to show the work they have been doing to an appreciative audience. We are sometimes surprised by adjudications (sometimes pleasantly, sometimes not) but we are always bowled over by the tenacity, determination and aplomb shown by our students. 1st or last in the order, every single one of you is a winner in our eyes. Well done and a huge thank you to the friends and parents who have supported and transported our children this week. See you at the next one.

EGG-CITING TIMES IN THONE!With Easter looming just around

the corner, Thone House are looking forward to ‘Egg-Citing Times’ this Saturday, as well as their trip to Exeter Museum and the City.

Such trips follow the fun times they have had during the week, having completed jigsaws, enjoyed a

fun swim, taken part in Capture the Flag, creatively created Leprechauns as well as enjoying a game of rackets.

Aside from the evening activities, some of our senior boarders had a wonderful experience, attending the evening led by Professor Robert Winston and it was also delightful to hear of our senior girls having a fantastic time at the Octagon Theatre, Yeovil, as part of the Spring Forward Performance.

CROSS COUNTRY

Having qualified to these finals last term, we managed to have a few training sessions as a squad to prepare us for today. We started the day with a brilliant 4-0 win over Clifton, followed by a 4-2 win over Truro School. However, we could only mange a 1-1 draw against Knighton House, a match we should have won. Next we faced two very strong teams in Blundell’s and Dean Close, losing both matches, but they both went on to be the eventual finalists. Our final game of the day was a 0-0 draw to The Downs Malvern. With the top two in our group finishing 1st and 2nd in the tournament, it shows what a strong group we had! Well done girls.

NETBALLU13B MATCH REPORT AGAINST CLIFTON -

TPS WON 19-12 We were set and ready to go feeling warmed up and

eager to begin, we knew we had to win this since it was the last game of our netball season. The first quarter began and the whistle blew, we scored at least 6 in the first quarter putting us well in the lead. When we started playing again they crept a few goals in but we were still well in the lead but we were playing too quickly. When we began after half time we knew that some of their better players were being positioned on the court, which made us want to raise our game. We could tell they were on our tail and we got a taste of our own medicine. We became a little nervous and rushed our play at times and we could tell they were slightly wearing away at our walls, but once that quarter had finished we

were given some useful advice from Miss B and went in for the last bit of play with a clean slate. Having said that we got back into our groove and we were playing yet again as a strong team and we were back where we should be. We were enjoying the game again and relaxed with our play more, shooting well even though the sun was shining so brightly. We were thankful to hear when the whistle blew as we knew we won, we were all happy yet exhausted. We weren’t glad when the game finished but we were relieved that we’d won as it was a great way to finish the term on a high. I think I speak for everyone when I say we’ve had a fabulous season with fantastic players and fantastic coaches and improved so much throughout the term. Thank you!

Well done to the player of the match Rosie!

By Esme Hallworth

U13 NETBALL V CLIFTON AND END OF TERM SUMMARY

A beautiful sunny day welcomed the Year 8’s last Netball matches in the Prep School. The B’s had a great game, showing determination and consistency to beat a strong Clifton side. The A team had a less conventional match as Clifton were struggling for numbers in both their U12 and U13a teams, so we played against a combined team, where we alternated our year groups after each 7 mins. After a slightly haphazard start the U13s got into their stride and dominated this unusual match. Although the combined score was a loss to Taunton the 13s won their half of the game 18-5.

Having coached this year group for the last two seasons in netball I have seen them grow in maturity and skill. They still have much to learn, but each individual should be proud of their own achievements and the level of effort they have put into their Netball. They have brought myself and Miss Barzotelli frustration at times, but a huge amount of laughter and pride. I hope that they can leave the Prep School with a passion for the sport they take on to their senior schools, whatever they may be. We will miss their tenaciousness, randomness and enthusiasm.

My particular thanks go to Verity Winsor and Esme Hallworth who have so ably led their respective teams as Captains this season. They have never wavered in their roles to organise equipment, warm the team up and supply match reports. They have been assisted by Kate McVicar and Matilda Clarke, so many thanks to them as well.

Many thanks girls, it has been a pleasure!

U12A NETBALL V CLIFTON AND END OF TERM

SUMMARY Well done to the U12A team this season.

You have all worked really hard with Miss Manley and myself. We are both able to see the progress you have made over the last 10 weeks. Our final game against Clifton allowed the team to put together everything we had learnt. Mid court players worked hard driving towards the ball and getting the ball moving forward down the court. This was a great improvement on our last couple of games. Within our attacking end, Ellie showed fast movement off of the ball within the D, alongside Gypsy, who supported her with accurate shooting. Our defence worked on blocking Clifton out of our defending D, putting pressure on their attack. Well done to Emily H for her vocal role from this end of the court to help our team set up the marking zones that we have been introducing in training.

The effort the whole team have put in to the training hasn’t necessarily been reflected in our scores, however, you have all worked hard to apply what we have been learning to every game and left the court smiling.

The U12b Netball team after their win against Clifton

A 16-4 loss today against Clifton, who were fielding a number of tall Under 13 players from them. Much greater confidence from the girls today, especially Mina who shot each time she got the ball in the circle. Brilliant game play and movement into spaces in the centre third and fantastic interceptions by all meant a very exciting match. Huge improvements in all areas of the game this season. Well done girls.

U13AS REGIONAL HOCKEY FINALS

On Tuesday 14th March, the U13A hockey team travelled to Millfield School for the West of England regional finals. As a team our target was to finish in the top two sides and qualify for nationals. However, the morning did not start in the best of manners, due to a later than anticipated arrival at Millfield School. This meant we had only a couple of minutes before our first game against Sherborne. A slow start was to be expected and before we knew it we were 1-0 down. The boys rallied and scored two quick goals to lead 2-1 with a few minutes remaining. A great save from Ollie Tucker as the match drew to a close ensured we finished 2-1 winners.

Our next match was against Exeter School, a team we had previously beaten in a triangular, however it was clear from the start they were up for it more than us and posed a much bigger threat than in our previous meeting. A very close game ended 3-1 to Taunton, the difference being as a team we took our chances when we got them. Despite not playing anywhere near their potential the team had won both their games, however with tougher tests to come it was

important the team stepped up their performances. A disappointing draw with the Elms and a 1-0 loss to the Kings School, Gloucester followed and as expected the boys’ confidence dropped as they faced an exit from the tournament.

We had a long break between these games and our final group game against Bristol Grammar School, who had so far won all of their games and had already secured top spot

in the group. If we were to qualify we had to beat BGS and rely on results elsewhere. Before the final group game the boys reassured each other that they were good enough, they just had to trust each other’s skills and not over complicate things. What followed was a resurgent Taunton School side, moving the ball down the flanks at pace and working it into the D for three well worked tap-ins. It was great to see Ben Chaffey stepping up this game and leading the line, he finished this game with 2 goals. All of the boys tracked back and defended as a unit making them extremely hard to break down. Results elsewhere meant we finished our group as runners-up, but more importantly, as a team we were full of confidence after beating a very strong Bristol Grammar School side.

In the semi-finals we were drawn against Queen's, we knew this would be a tough test as despite beating them at the County Tournament we knew they had been missing a couple of key players who were back in their team today. Queen's took an early lead in the game; the Taunton boys stayed composed and stuck to the game plan. An equaliser from a well worked short corner routine our Director of Hockey had introduced followed and the team grew in confidence. With a few minutes remaining Tom Houghton-King struck a great shot into the corner of the goal. The boys kept their cool, and saw out the game like seasoned professionals, displaying a togetherness that has been missing on occasions this term. The sound of the final whistle was drowned out by the boys’ cheers of jubilation, we had qualified for the nationals! By winning we knew we had one more game to play, against Dean Close who had looked strong all day. We knew it was possible as Queens had beaten them in their group, however it was one game too much and the boys lost 1-0 despite working hard throughout the game.

The boys deserve a lot of credit for how they responded to the disappointments of earlier games, it would have been easy to give up and quit but the boys rallied together and achieved a top 2 finish, a huge achievement, we now look forward to the National finals on Friday 12th May in Nottingham.

On Saturday 11th March the U13 7s team travelled the short distance to Millfield School for their annual tournament. Following a similar format to the week before 16 schools were placed in to 4 groups. All teams play each other in their groups then progress in to a new round of games against schools from the other 3 groups who finished in the same position. Taunton were drawn against Shrewsbury House, The Downs and Wellingborough. Taunton’s first 2 games were wins against The Downs and then Shrewsbury House. With a win in their last game against Wellingborough TPS progressed through to the main cup with Harrison Barrett and Barney Dietz playing exceptionally well. The other group winners were Millfield, Caldicott and Bromsgrove. First up was Millfield, a team we had faced the week before and drew 10-10. With a similar slow start to last week Taunton were very hesitant. For the first time that day, and after a series of dropped passes, the team went behind. Half time was an opportunity for the team to collect their thoughts. The second half was far better and with the scores on 5-5 and some strong defence by Teddy Woolstencroft and Freddie Richards, it was left to Jack Whatmough, with the final play, to

run around the Millfield left winger and score the winning try. With Millfield winning their next game the pressure was on Taunton to then beat Caldicott. Caldicott are current holders of Rosslyn Park, having won it for the last 2 years, and reached the finals at The Downs last week. Fortunately TPS continued where they left off against Millfield and proved too quick and strong for their opposition and won 25-5. Throughout all of the games all 10 players played a role in securing victories. William Wang, Matthew Ashby and Jabril Kinsiona all made important contributions. With Millfield then winning their last game Taunton had to draw or beat Bromsgrove to win the cup for the first time in the 34 years of the competition. Tom Houghton-King and Jakarta Allen-Skinner really stepped up in this last game and victory was secured by half time. This really was an extraordinary day of rugby with all of the players giving everything and working as a team.

Squad: Jakarta Allen-Skinner, Matthew Ashby, Harrison Barrett, Barney Dietz(Capt), Thomas Houghton-King(Vice-Capt), Freddie Richards, Jack Whatmough, Teddy Woolstencroft, Jabril Kinsiona, William Wang.
