Worship Defined

• Proskuneo (John 4:21-24; Mt. 4:10)

– To kiss the hand, to fall upon the knees and

touch the ground with the forehead as an

expression of profound reverence; Hence, in

the New Testament, by kneeling or

prostration to do homage (to one) or homage

shown to men of a superior rank, homage

rendered to God and the ascended Christ.

– To revere, to worship; to stand in awe, to venerate, to reverence, adore. (Thayer)

• Latreuo (Phil. 3:3; Heb. 12:28; Rev. 22:3)

– Rendered “serve” 17 times in NT– Rendered “worship” 4 times in NT– In the NT to render religious service or

homage, to worship; to perform sacred services; to offer gifts; to worship God in observance of the rites instituted for His worship. (Thayer)

– To honor or reverence as a divine being or supernatural power; to regard with great, even extravagant respect, honor, or devotion. (Webster)

Worship

• Involves Participation

– We are not spectators

– We are not the audience

– Attendance Is Not Worship!

• An act of paying honor to God, doing homage; expressing respect, offering gifts, serving Him

• Object of our worship—GOD!

Worship To God Is Exclusive

Reverent Atmosphere in the Assembly

Nehemiah 8

5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

• Am I a help or a distraction to my

brethren in the assembly?

• Is worship the high point of my week?
