Hello LindyI am on holiday in Peru and yippee, we’ve finally made it to the Amazon. My family and I are staying at a National Reserve, which is fab, called the Pacaya Samiria in Peru.We look over the Maranon river. It is so dark that it is known as the ‘Jungle of Mirrors’ because the sky and jungle are so dark.I have seen so many colourful flowers and all sorts of plants that I’ve never seen before.I miss electricity as it only comes on at night time here, but the birds make up for it, as we get nothing like these at home.I saw the Blue Morpho Butterfly that I wrote about, so pretty.Bye for now, Courtney.

HiWell here I am after a week in the Amazon. It has got to be the most incredible trip I have ever done in my life. I feel just like an Indian! We sleep in some comfortable wooden jungle lodges in a forest amongst some real Indians. The Indians are very kind and share their skills and activities such as kayaking, hunting, crafting with us.BUT! I am very tired of walking in the rainforest and rowing and being bitten by millions of mosquitos. Its so hot and humid that it is unbearable. It is very strange to be so far away from civilization and I am not used to this. Can’t wait to come back and live normally again.

Dear lindy, I am in the Australian rain forest. In the hotel I am hostelling right now they are very

careful with the water. And when we were coming to the hotel instead of go in bus we went walking. It seems that they are conserving a lot.HugsKenda

Lindy,

I am having the best holiday ever at the Amazon in Brazil. I am going across very high safe bridges and seeing the fantastic landscape as we pass over it. I am going to catch a boat and sail down the Amazonian river tomorrow. I went to go and see the Jaguar but unfortunately it is endangered and I am trying to stop people cutting down the trees to make timber. With the money I have spent on this holiday it is helping to save the rainforest with its endangered animals.

• Hi Lindy!!• I am really enjoying my holiday if you look on the

other side of the postcard you can see the house that are staying in. I was a bit disappointed because I really, really wanted to live in one of those tribal huts. We have done lots of things - yesterday we went into the jungle to look for animals – we saw lots of birds and insects! This evening we have a tribal dance going on in the main area of the camp! Oh! And I almost forgot to say – we all went for a canoe trip down the Amazon - It was lucky that we didn’t find any crocodiles!!

• See you soon!! Morwenna x

• Hi Lindy• It is beautiful here in Brazil. The Amazon is

enormous! All of the water in Brazil in the pipes are not working. But the water in the river is gigantic. the tour guide says that the Amazon pups 100 Olympic swimming pools of water a second. It is the widest river in the world and is the only river to have ever gone through 4 different countries.

• Hope you are all right.• niC

• Lindy,• I am having a GREAT time here, I have experienced a

lot so far I have seen many colourful plants, wacky but wonderful animals and a lot of the culture. Although it is probably a holiday that will surprise some people, I am having one of the best times of my life! The only thing that makes this holiday horrible is that it makes me so sad to see huge amounts of land treeless with no life or anything in it. Well I got to go now, we are seeing something special today!

The visit’s been great so far! The traditionally built Amazon lodge is by the Amazon river which is crystal clear and has a thousand different species of fish. The tours of the rainforest are amazing! The native tracker is really nice and he identifies all sorts of species. The sleeping arrangements and food are really comfortable! I’m enjoying it!

Love, Tom

Summary• The main point to draw from this is that it is quite possible to go

to the Amazon and see amazing things.• But not many of you commented on the people working to make

this happen – the indigenous people that have sustainable work to do – and only a few mentioned the special measures taken to reduce the environmental impact – you talked about going out by canoe or on walks but did not see that this happened deliberately to reduce greenhouse gases and save on resources that are running out.

• Many of these eco-tourist sites do put a great deal of effort into reducing their impact, e.g. compost toilets, recycling waste, using solar power, local food etc, using local materials for building, rather than importing high-tech stuff from outside that uses lots of energy, like power showers. They don’t use speed boats as this would disturb the environment.
