Murphys plan monumental trip to Middle Eastby Samantha Hurst
Religious and cultural con-flict seems to dominate the news in relation to the Middle East. But clashes in that region have not detoured Dr. Jim Murphy and wife, Lisa, from plans to travel there once again this coming spring.
Dr. Murphy, a retired pas-tor, has traveled to the Middle East 19 times and said he has a passion for sharing the region with others.
“There’s a draw there – so many new things are going on all of the time in the way of ar-chaeology and culture,” he said. “To go through all of the bazaars and things is fascinating to me; to see the culture and see it evolve.”

Rotary donates $5k to Tryon Elementary in honor of Williamsby Samantha Hurst
The Rotary Club of Tryon Thursday, Oct. 20 presented a $5,000 donation to Tryon Elementary School in honor of retired Principal Walker Williams.
Rotary President Gorden Threlfall said the club felt honored to be able to thank Williams for his commitment to
the students of Tryon. “It isn’t often we have someone
here with us that has made as many contributions over as many years as we have here today in Mr. Williams,” Threlfall said.

They said this particular trip, however, holds a special signifi-cance to them and many of those who have booked their space already.
The travelers will leave the United States April 30, with their first stop in Tel Aviv. From there they will travel through Caesarea and Mt. Tabor, on their way to the Beatitudes, Dan, Capernaum and across the Sea of Galilee. They will then make their way to Nazareth, Jerico, Jerusalem and to the Dead Sea.
Along the way, travelers will experience extremes, from the changes in culture to the changes in altitude.

distance the elevation drops from 2,500 feet to 1,400 feet below sea level.
“When you read ‘Jesus went down to Jerico,’ Jesus really went down to Jerico,” Lisa Murphy said.
Within the Old City of Jerusa-lem you also see the segmented quarters for Christians, Muslims, Jews and Armenians.
“Talk about seeing diversity in a 2-and-a-half-mile walk,” Lisa Murphy said. “I don’t know of any place in the world where you have such a richness, this sign of so many religions of the world.”
Ancient history pervades this trip as well. At Masada, near the southern most tip of the Dead Sea, there is a mountain fortress where 960 Jewish people bar-ricaded themselves against the Romans. Murphy explained the Jews were later discovered dead from mass suicide because they said they would rather die free than live enslaved.
“We want to get as much information to those traveling as we can,” Murphy said. “There is just so much to see and take in from the ancient history to what is happening right now.”
Murphy said there remains a strong focus on archaeology in the area, with many artifacts still being uncovered.
Murphy said he wants to show
people the history of the area and its cultures. He also wants to show them what he said is the real Muslim culture.
“One percent of the Muslim population are extremist,” he said. “The other 99 percent are just peaceful, family-loving people like you and me.”
He said traveling to the Mid-dle East – Jerusalem in particular – is actually very safe.
“Tourism is one of Jerusa-lem’s biggest industries, so they keep the tourists safe,” Murphy said to the constant question he receives about the safety of trav-eling to the Middle East.
He also said English is spoken commonly and the American dol-lar accepted rather widely.
Murphy has visited 22 differ-ent countries as side trips, having first started his world travels in 1967.
“Not many people had gone to the Holy Land at that time,” Murphy said. “So, there was a big desire to have those who had visited the area to go and speak at churches about their experiences. I’ve given hundreds of talks since then.”
The trip lasts 11 days, from April 30 to May 10.
On the way back to the States, the group also plans to make a stop in Istanbul.

The Rotary Club of Tryon presented the check, which will be put solely toward stocking the shelves of TES’ library. Wil-liams, who led TES for a total of 20 years as principal, said there was no greater way to expand a child’s capability for learning.
“Ever since I stepped foot in a classroom they preached to me about individualization, and the best way to individualize education is to put a book in the hand of a child,” Williams said. “You all have just put a book in the hands of many children.”
Librarian Kathy Wheaton said the donation would make a tremendous impact on the TES library collection.
“It is a wonderful gift,” Wheaton said. “He [Williams] was a huge advocate of science and so we are going to make a special collection, housed separately in Mr. Williams’ honor, that focuses strictly on

Robberies at Advance Auto, Columbus HardwarePolice: Probably not related to Tryon restaurant robberiesby Leah Justice
Recent robberies of the Ad-vanced Auto and Columbus Hard-ware Stores are thought to be professional hits and not related to robberies of three Tryon restau-rants that occurred the same week, according to local police.
Advance Auto and Columbus Hardware were broken into some-time in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 10. The restaurants of El Sureño, Mr. Juan’s and TJ’s Cafe in Tryon were broken into two days later.
Columbus Police Chief Chris Beddingfield told town council during a meeting Thursday, Oct. 20 that the Columbus robberies are thought to have been professional hits as a number of Advance Auto Parts stores round the region have been robbed in the exact same manner.
Beddingfield said the safe was drilled into in the same manner in Advance Auto robberies in Duncan and Spartanburg, S.C., as well as in Brevard, Mooresville, Gastonia and Charlotte.
“I think it was a professional hit and not something that needs to worry our residents,” Bedding-field said.
Beddingfield said he is trying to work in a regional effort to solve the case.
Beddingfield also said after reviewing details of the Tryon
break-ins, local investigators do not believe the cases are related.
During the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 12, El Sureño, Mr. Juan’s and TJ’s Café were broken into. Some cash was stolen in those break-ins, according to Tryon investigators.
In the Advance Auto break-in, the suspect(s) broke in through a door and used the store’s tools to drill into the safe and take cash.
Beddingfield said the same method of using the store’s tools to drill into the safes was used in the other Advance Auto robberies. He said there were no fingerprints left at the crime scenes.
Beddingfield said Columbus Hardware was broken into on the same night as the Advance Auto robbery. The hardware store’s doors were damaged, but the suspect(s) was unable to get into the safe.
Beddingfield said in another regional Advance Auto Store break-in, a nearby hardware store was also broken into the same night. He said he believes the robberies in Columbus are related, because Columbus Hard-ware is in such close proximity to Advance Auto.
Both cases are still unsolved. Anyone with any information on either the Tryon restaurant break-ins or the Columbus Advance Auto and Columbus Hardware break-in is urged to call the Tryon Police Department at 828-859-9195, the Columbus Police Department at 828-894-5464 or Foothills Crimestoppers at 1-800-847-7119.

New strength training class for boys at Foothills GymnasticsFoothills Gymnastics Acad-
emy is now offering a new class for boys, “Boys, strength and conditioning training.”
This class is designed for boys to gain speed and endurance to help them excel at all sports.
They do strength training by climbing ropes, pull ups on the uneven parallel bars and spider man walks as examples of a few exercises they do.
They work on conditioning on the tumble track, as well as playing various games aimed at improving speed. Organiz-ers said the class helps boys gain flexibility, stamina, and improving their balance.
A few spots are still available and classes are held Wednes-days from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and will run the entire school year.

Behind The Blue Door at the Mill Spring Agricultural CenterSo you’ve been to the Mill
Spring Agricultural Develop-ment Center and you enjoyed the tour. Maybe you flashed back memories of old classroom scenes. Maybe you enjoyed the food. But have you entered from downstairs through The Blue Door?
Dot Pearce, a stained glass artist, recently hosted her open house and welcomed the public to her studio behind The Blue Door from the ground floor of
the center. Pearce requested this special
space and renovated it to house the large-scale mosaics she creates. Pearce’s work requires a lot of space.
She dreams big. After all, she builds walls. That’s right, mosaic walls.
Having worked in the me-dium of stained glass for more than 35 years, she said, “I am now claiming my niche as a mo-saic artist, specializing in donor
walls and memory walls.” A donor wall commemorates
a project. The art is designed to incorporate small plaques with the names of those who gave support to the project. A memory wall can symbolically and art-fully represent the memory of a loved one or an event.
Pearce’s first walls were the “Sunset Wall” and the “Tree Wall” created for Hospice of Rutherford County.
“Then by word of mouth,”
said Pearce, “came the op-portunity to design and create another donor wall, this time for Community Clinic in Spindale.”

To be a volunteer, you don’t have to be an AARP and you don’t have to have any experi-ence in tax preparation.
Volunteers receive free tax preparation training offered in early January 2012 in Hender-
sonville, N.C. Training includes four days of
classroom seminar sessions and two days of computer lab training at the Blue Ridge Community College.
Once training sessions are completed, volunteers are re-quired to pass an examination to become a certified AARP

The 13th annual Otho Gibbs Chamber golf tournament spon-sored by Tryon Federal Bank was held on Oct. 6 at Meadow-brook Golf Club. Two flights were played with 17 teams participating.
First flight, first place went to the Macon Bank team with a score of 54 (Ethan Wald-man, Brian Jones, Danny Jones and Benji McCall). First flight, second place went to the Mead-owbrook team, also scoring 55, but losing by one stroke (Cleve Yelton, Claude Keever, Chris Owens and Jim Vennera).

However, there are only a few weeks when we cannot actually work outdoors because of the local climate, which warms up most days above a safe painting temper-ature for latex paint. Tryon fire chief one of 787 Chief Fire Officers worldwideby Leah Justice
Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis recently completed the process that awards him the professional desig-nation of Chief Fire Officer (CFO).
The Commission on Profes-sional Credentialing (CPC) gave Davis the official designation on Aug. 23.
Davis was recognized by Try-on Town Council and received a standing ovation during council’s meeting Tuesday, Oct. 18.
“There’s only 787 [CFOs] in the world,” said Tryon Town Manager Justin Hembree. “I think that says a lot for a town and a department our size to have a leader that is credentialed through this organization.”
The process of gaining CFO designation includes an assess-ment of the applicant’s education, professional development, tech-nical competencies, contributions
to the profession and community involvement. Applicants are also required to identify a future de-velopment plan.
“Chief Davis has a rich knowl-edge of the emergency services profession and has far surpassed critical core competencies for personnel serving in senior fire officer positions,” stated a press release from The Commission on Professional Credentialing, an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).
Davis was hired as Tryon’s fire chief in 2007. A native of Shelby, he holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia Southern University (CSU). He is currently pursuing his doctor-ate in business administration from CSU.

FHS receives gifts from local residents’ estates
Foothills Humane Society (FHS) announces receipt of three gifts from local residents through the Polk County Com-munity Foundation (PCCF). The endowments will benefit FHS’ shelter operations.
The first gift, named the Jane Dusenbury Culberson Fund after the late donor, is a distribution from an endow-ment established in PCCF through her estate. It will ben-efit FHS in perpetuity.
The second gift is also a distribution through the PCCF. It is from the Elizabeth and Robert Bailey Charitable Fund, established by the do-nor during her lifetime and designating FHS as one of several charitable beneficiaries annually.
The third gift, also from a designated fund held by the PCCF, was established by the late General and Mrs. Evans. The Dixie and Harry Evans Charitable Endowment Fund
provides an annual distribution to FHS.
“We are very grateful that these donors had the foresight to continue their support of the Humane Society through their estate plans,” said Ruth Kellick-Grubbs, president of the board of directors. “Their generosity allows us to con-tinue saving the animals and benefiting the residents of the communities we serve.”
FHS, established in 1957, is this area’s only open ad-mission animal shelter. As an adoption-guarantee program, FHS took in more than 1,500 animals in 2010, with a live release rate of 98.7 percent.
FHS also works to prevent animal abuse and educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

‘Little Princes’ entertaining, inspiring and informative
“Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal,” by Conor Grennan, is a memoir that is entertaining, inspiring and infor-mative.
In 2004, the author began a trip around the world by volunteering in an orphanage in Nepal. It was only supposed to be a three-month commitment before he continued his trek around the world.
Grennan did continue his journey but he returned to Nepal and encountered life-changing events. An easy-to-read memoir,
it is full of adventure, intrigue, and humor.

PAC hike to visit Pisgah National Forest Oct. 28Pacolet Area Conservancy
(PAC) will host a 5-mile hike at Pisgah National Forest, the third hike of PAC’s fall hiking series. PAC Land Protection Specialist Pam Torlina will lead hikers to John Rock. The hike is a strenu-ous loop with a total ascent of approximately 1,000 feet. The trailhead is accessed from the Pis-gah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery. The highlight of this hike is John Rock, a large granite dome that offers views of the fish hatchery, Looking Glass Rock and Pilot Mountain.
The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery, operated by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC), was originally the site of a logging community and then a Civilian Conservation Corps camp during the Great Depres-sion. Bald cardinals with somewhat reptilian bare black heads - who ever would see such a thing? Well, welcome to the heat of mid-summer and with it the reports of bald-headed northern cardinals, blue jays and even common grackles.
Every year I get emails and phone calls describing these mu-tant-looking birds that aside from their featherless heads otherwise look exactly like the aforemen-tioned species. I must admit that the first time I saw one of these somewhat bi-zarre looking birds I thought it must have been very sick.
Most birds molt their feathers twice a year, replacing all or most of their feathers over a period of a few weeks to a month or so. This is easily seen in our summer resident scarlet tanagers. The males are brilliantly colored red with black wings and tail when they arrive in the spring. By the time late summer rolls around the males’ red feathers are slowly being replaced by green.
The birds retain this green plumage through the win-ter months on their wintering grounds, only regaining their red coloration before they begin to again move north in our spring. It is the same with indigo bun-tings.
The males lose their bright blue plumage in September and molt to a very even brown before their southbound migration. They then superficially resemble the plainer females and immature birds, but they do retain some blue feathers in their wings and tail.
As in many species, male indigos will molt back into their spring finery before they return north to breed. Even during their spring migration some of the males appear in a rather unusual combination of brown and blue feathers.
Here in the mountains of West-ern North Carolina, many of our
resident birds also molt in late summer, usually after they have finished their breeding season.
With many species, such as tufted titmice, Carolina wrens or Carolina chickadees, it’s not very noticeable, but with others the results can look very peculiar indeed and this is especially no-ticeable in cardinals and blue jays. Annual molting may indeed be part of the “baldness syndrome,” but it also may be a result of
an infestation of feather mites or lice. It seems as if immature birds undergo-ing their first molt may be just as likely as adults to un-
dergo this feather loss and we don’t really understand why they lose all of their head feathers at one time.

this is where those mites may play a part resulting in the complete loss of the bird’s head feathers. Some recent research has suggest-ed that it could even be a result of a nutritional or environmental factor but I am not so sure about this. To be honest, no one knows for sure, as the condition has not been well studied.
Fortunately for the birds, new head feathers do grow in within a few weeks and the birds look less and less reptilian, obviously

none the worse for wear after their summer ordeal.

As an artist, preservationist and explorer, Jim Draper has a story to tell about the ancient beauty of Florida’s swamps, marshes and coastal waterways. His paintings become narratives of 500 years of nature’s history.
Draper will share his explora-tions at the Tryon Fine Arts Cen-ter’s (TFAC’s) “Explore the Arts” program on Thursday, Nov. 3.
A native of Mississippi, Drap-er has lived in Florida for more than a decade. His explorations, whether by kayak, canoe or on foot, have inspired his art.
As a preservationist, Draper said he feels strongly that noth-ing in nature should be taken for granted.
His paintings and prints will be on display and for sale Nov. 3 - 6 in the Mahler Room at TFAC, 34 Melrose Ave. in Tryon.

Curtis was represented for 10 years by P.P.O.W. Gallery in New York City. Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. She was included in “The Figure: Another Side of Modern-ism” at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and “Bad Girls” at The New Museum in New York and other major group shows. She has also shown at Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, The Huntington Beach Art Center in California and Salama Caro Gallery of London. She taught painting at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, N.Y.
Curtis is the recipient of the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship, Yale Summer School of Art and the Predmore Award from Duke University.

Tryon Country Club results for Oct. 15-16 and upcoming events
The Fall Cup matches were held Oct. 15-16 between two teams. The team captained by Gary Laughter and co-captained by Ethan Waldman held off the team led by Robert Carter and Brian Jones. Thirty-six players competed in perfect weather with four matches of best ball, scramble, alternate shot and singles match play. The final score was 24 to 19.
Tryon Country Club also announced two team events coming in November open to club members and to the golfing public. The first is the first Foothills Four Ball Team Championship, two player teams, on Nov. 5 and 6. The second is the eighth annual “Scratch Scramble,” a captain’s choice event.

William Ray Horne
William Ray Horne, 90, of Columbus died July 12, 2011. He was son of the late Jessie Monroe and Cora Collins Horne and hus-band of Mildred Holbert Horne.
He was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren and Mill S p r i n g Ve t e r a n s Lodge. He served in
the U.S. Army as Medic during WWII.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Bill Horne of Green Creek; four daughters, Juanita Odel of Sunny View, Marilyn Horne and Regina Pate, both of Green Creek. and Laura Saenger of Hickory, N.C.; four sisters, Geneva Harrell of Bak-ersville, N.C., Imogene Burns of Inman, S.C., Janice Fagan of Green Creek and Linda Horne of McAdenville, N.C.; 10 grand-children, Kim Odel, Kelly Brad-ley, Lee Bradley, Brandon Horne, Ashley Horne, Rebecca Horne, Joseph Pate, Jacob Pate, Miles Saenger and Will Saenger; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, July 15 at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Fellow-ship Hall. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary, conducted by Rev. Steven Abe. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

John Hanley GibbsJohn Hanley Gibbs, 87, of
Columbus died Thursday, July 14, 2011 in Autumn Care Nursing Center, Forest City, N.C.
Born in Polk County, he was the son of the late Callaway Bur-gin and Florence Jackson Gibbs. He was a veteran of WWII, hav-
ing served in the U.S. Army, a member of the VFW Post 10349 and the Woodmen of
the World. Mr. Gibbs was the husband of Omie Lee Laughter Gibbs, who died in 1986.
Survivors include one daugh-ter, Patsy Gibbs Toney (Dean) of Rutherfordton, N.C.; son, Harold Gibbs of Rutherfordton, N.C.; one sister, Alvah Gibbs of Columbus; and a brother , Herbert Gibbs of Mill Spring. Also surviving are five grandchil-dren, Randy Toney (Kimberly), Marc Toney (LeeAnn), Lora Brock (Jeff), Jeffrey Gibbs (Col-leen) and Elizabeth Gibbs and six great-grandchildren, Mason Toney, Kevin Gibbs, Anthony Brock, Bryan Gibbs, Nick Gibbs and Zane Gibbs.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 16, in the McFar-land Funeral Chapel, Tryon.
Burial was in Polk Memo-rial Gardens, Columbus, with military rites by the Polk County Memorial Burial Squad.
