Your holiday homework, this year is a fun mix of all the aspects of the language. It has been designed to ensure that you enjoy and learn at the same time. Make a folder using A-4 size sheet and prepare it beautifully.

Q1 Read the following passage carefully :1. By the time our delayed train reached and I disembarked with my father and baby Lavanya, it was past midnight. It was cold, dark and foggy. My husband, Manas, who was to receive us, was nowhere in sight. Soon the platform became deserted.2. Then, a burly man approached us and offered to carry our bags. He wasn’t wearing the usual porter’s red shirt and tag, and though I was wary, my father decided to hire him. Leaving Lavanya and me with the man, my father went to look for Manas. I took a closer look at the man and felt apprehensive. He was big hairy, his face was pock marked and his eyes looked bloodshot.3. Just then Lavanya, who had been sleeping in my arms, awoke and turned to look at the porter. He gave a playful smile and held out his arms. I thought she’d start crying and held her closer. But she smiled back and twisted herself out of my arms into his.4. Now I was really scared. What if he ran away with my baby? He must have sensed my fear and, even before I reached out to take Lavanya back, he handed her to me. Turning around, he mumbled that though everyone was scared of him, my innocent baby had accepted him. His eyes had tears in them. I didn’t know what to say.5.At that moment, my father returned with Manas. The man picked up our bags and walked towards the cars park. As having put our luggage in me, he placed his hand on walked away. As we followed him, I asked Manas to pay him a little extra. But, having put our luggage in the car, the man refused to take payment from us. Coming up to me, he placed his hand on my baby’s head for a moment as if to say, ‘God bless you! And walked away. Q2 Read the following passage carefully: Don’t Shuffle Them1 . Shuffling the students to different sections has been Practiced in many schools for many reasons. Some schools carry out the change in sections as part of a punishment to maintain discipline in the class. Friendship among

school students evolves over a period of many years. Sudden separation from one’s friends can be very traumatic to the students involved, especially during adolescence, as the peer group determines the identity of the youngsters. It IS like uprooting an adolescent form his/her comfort zone. Interest in school activities many drop. Many boys and girls find it difficult to make new friends in the new section, as the adolescents would have established their own peer groups by now. Some students become rebellious some lose trust and respect for adults in general. Some can undergo mood changes including depression. Even oral threat of separation form friends can be very traumatic to children.2. It is better that schools do not disturb the immediate environment of adolescents, as this can have long-term adverse effects on their emotional development. If there are constant deviations in the expected behaviour, the teachers should take the help of parents and professionals to find out if the adolescents have any behaviour or conduct disorder. An appropriate approach to such conditions would help students enjoy school better. (Dr. S. Yamuna) Type — I (Sentence Completion)1 6. 1 Complete the following sentences appropriately :I . Shuffling the students to different sections in some schools is practices as ………………………..2. During adolescence, shuffling can be painful to students because…………………………………3. Four possible harmful effects of shuffling are:(a)………………………………( b) .,………………………( c)……………………………..( d) ……………………………4. Disturbing the immediate environment of adolescents can……………………..Type — II (Very Short Answer Type Questions)16.2 Answer the following questions briefly :1.What is the main difficuIty among students when they are shifted to a new section ?2. What is the author’s suggestion to teachers if they find some changes in their students’ expected behaviour ?16.3 Find words from the passage which mean the same as :I . something that causes emotional disturbance (Para 1)2. opposite (Para 2)
