10 Humanities: The Vietnam Wars Assessment for this Unit consists of a range of tasks and activities that draw on the following Standards: Historical Concepts and Skills § Chronology: sequence significant events in order to analysis of cause and effect; analyse and evaluate patterns of change. § Historical Sources as evidence: analyse and evaluate sources; analyse different perspectives and their influences; evaluate historical interpretations (historians). § Continuity and Change: Identify and evaluate patterns of change. § Cause and Effect: Analyse the long-term causes, short-term triggers and effects of events and developments. § Historical Significance: Evaluate the significance of an events, ideas, individuals and places Historical Knowledge: § Causes of the Vietnam War and reasons for Australia’s involvement. § Perspectives of Australians and others during the War. § Significant events, turning points and the nature of warfare. § Effects of the Vietnam War, including Australian society. § Significance of the Vietnam War to Australia’s international relationships in the 20 th Century. Clear and appropriate communication – written, visual and spoken – are valued in Humanities. Correct use of research conventions is encouraged. Task 1: Context Activity and Inquiry Questions View the documentary ‘Australia and the Vietnam War’ and complete the accompanying worksheet. Discuss and brainstorm some ‘big questions’ that might be used for an historical study of the Vietnam War. Task 2: Reading and Notes Read through ‘The Vietnam Wars’ text and use the accompanying questions to guide your note- taking. Complete the ‘Timeline of the Vietnam War’ activity – see separate handout for this. Further resources for research (documentaries and additional readings) are available on the class website. Task 3: Extended Responses (Option 1) Choose and complete THREE or more Extended Response questions from the table below. Complete one response from each category: Causes, Experiences, Significance. Remember to use evidence and perspectives to support your response.
