10 October 2021 - Twenty-eighth Sunday (Year B)

“Good master, what must I do…?”

ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS about having a regular

confessor is that he doesn’t need to give too much advice

during reconciliation. As he is aware of one’s struggle with

sin, the confessor provides a few encouraging remarks to

remind one of God’s unfailing providence. In my case, my

confessor always ends his advice with these words: ‘Be thankful for your

weaknesses. For in the words of Fulton Sheen, if we had never sinned we

could never call Christ our Saviour.’ Whilst I’m still trying to understand

these words, I have found the Gospel for this Sunday helpful in manifesting

humanity’s desire to be fully united with the Lord.

Our Gospel begins with probably the most asked question when navigating

the spiritual life: ‘Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ His

question is met with the Ten Commandments. Jesus steers his question

back to the Decalogue: the Ten Commandments are the very core of the

Law as they stem directly from the Lord; therefore they are essential in

attaining eternal life. To Jesus’ astonishment the young man has kept all

these since his youth. Jesus then goes further: ‘Go and sell everything you

own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;

then come, follow me.’ At these words the young man’s joy turns to

sadness: he turns and walks away from Jesus.

How does this Gospel assist us in our earthly pilgrimage? First, the young

man’s question highlights a merit-based approach towards eternal life - an

erroneous approach. One does not gain eternal life through one’s good

deeds - though they certainly aid our cause - but in cooperating with God’s

grace and mercy. This reality leads into the second point: when we begin to

strip ourselves of our unhealthy attachments, only then are we able to allow

God’s grace to work within us. This approach is revealed in the words of St.

Paul: ‘“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in

weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power

of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with

weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am

weak, then I am strong.’ (2 Cor 12:9-10).

Dear friends, how do we approach our Lord in our pursuit for eternal life?

Quite frankly, we approach him with nothing but our weakness. Only when

we recognise our spiritual fragility can

we allow God to transform us. As we

reflect on this Gospel may we seek the

intercession of Our Blessed Mother so

as to imitate her humility in order that

we be filled with God’s grace and so

attain eternal life.

Wishing you a blessed week ahead in

these difficult times,

Fr Chris

An Important Lockdown Message...

Over the past couple of months, we have written a couple of messages on the

subject of the pandemic and the lockdown imposed by the government in the

interests of minimising the spread of the coronavirus and its sometimes deadly

consequences. Those messages have sought to reassure parishioners at a difficult

time and to encourage all to receive one of the vaccines on offer. We do hope you

have been encouraged by the endorsement that Pope Francis and Bishop Vincent

have given on the moral aspects of the various Covid-19 vaccines.

We have reached a point in the lockdown where there is a light dawning on the

difficult situation we have endured over the past couple of months. This light is

breaking because of the increased vaccination rate and will shine brighter as an

increased number of people seek to take advantage of the vaccines on offer.

Whilst we are all aware of the easing of restrictions that will occur on Monday, the

Catholic Bishops of NSW have decided to postpone the opening of churches for

public worship until eighty percent of the population is double-dosed. Of course,

we cannot say for certain when that will be but, based on current trends, it is likely

to be towards the end of the month. The reason for this decision is essentially

that, based on the NSW Government regulations, opening up at the seventy

percent threshold would mean having to deny entry to those who have not been

vaccinated, something the Bishops aren’t prepared to do. Nonetheless, we will be

opening the chapel next Monday for private prayer only for a few hours each day

until the full reopening of the parish.

Once churches are open for public worship, please be aware that there will still be

some restrictions in place, similar to earlier ones, such as mask wearing and social

distancing, signing/checking in, and so on. Please respect all of these

requirements to ensure that we can all safely worship together publicly once

again.

In the meantime, rest assured that the clergy and staff of St Patrick’s continue to

pray for you and Masses are being offered for all parishioners on a regular basis.

Please pray for us and let us hope that we will soon meet and worship together in

our beautiful cathedral once more.

Yours in Christ,

Frs Robert, Chris, Joseph

and the Parish Team

Support Mass for You at Home Many people who are isolated, in prison, in hospital or don’t have internet rely on Mass for You at Home. The Catholic Mass is broadcast free-to-air each Sunday morning on Channel 10 and WIN at 6am. Find some familiar faces from the Diocese of Parramatta celebrating Mass over the coming weeks. Find out more at www.massforyou.com.au

Plenary Council As the First Assembly of the Plenary Council concludes this weekend, you can still review some of the work that was done by going to the Diocese of Parramatta YouTube channel visiting the websites plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au/assembly-1 or parracatholic.org/plenary-2021/

Roman Synod Pope Francis is beginning a consultative process for the universal Church culminating in a Synod of Bishops in 2023. A national committee has been established to support the Church in Australia as it prepares to join this international consultation process. More information as it comes to hand.

Young people of the Diocese: we’re with you! “I am with you always” – Matthew 28:20. The Diocese has launched a new website in response to the mental health crisis impacting our young people. The website parracatholic.org/withyou contains links and information about services that can help young people whose wellbeing is suffering. Please share widely with young people and their families.

St Pat’s Matters—New Edition! Issue 108 of St Pat’s Matters has now been uploaded to the parish website. Between its covers is a wide range of articles to arouse your interest. Our thanks to all the parishioners who contributed submissions. A parishioner has already emailed Fr Robert, sending an article of historical interest for inclusion in the next issue! Follow that lead. Email your submissions to Fr Robert or M. Polizzi at [email protected]

Climate Action Banner We now have a large banner on display at the cathedral precinct, urging the federal government to take swift action on the climate crisis. Please pray for action on this burning issue, especially in the lead-up to the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in just a few weeks’ time, at which Pope Francis will be present.

Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the parish is scheduled to take place on Sunday 14 November after the 11:00am Mass. The Annual General Report is now available on the parish website and hard copies will be available soon. This ought to give everyone who wishes to come to the AGM sufficient time to digest its contents.

Get vaccinated for the common good Vaccination against COVID-19 is a morally good thing, providing protection for the person vaccinated and the wider community. Some COVID-19 vaccines are associated with ethically questionable production and research practices, but Pope Francis and the Australian Bishops have advised that it is morally permissible to receive any vaccine made available. More information available online at the following address: https://www.catholic.org.au/coronavirus

Giving to the Parish Some parishioners might be wondering how to support the parish financially at this time if they are not already doing so. Please call us if this is something you would like to do or go to the diocesan website and scroll down to “Give to your Parish”.

Saint of the Week

11th October - Pope St John XXIII (1881-1963)

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born in the village of Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo, in 1881. At

the age of 11 he entered the seminary at Bergamo and later pursued his studies at the Pontifical

Seminary in Rome. He was ordained priest in 1904. He was secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo

but from 1921 onwards he served the Holy See directly in various posts, both in Rome and in

Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, culminating as Apostolic Nuncio to France

from 1944 to 1953, when he was created cardinal and made the

Patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope in 1958. He convoked the

Roman Synod, instituted the revision of Canon Law, and called the

Second Vatican Council, which opened on 11 October 1962. He died

while the Council was still in session, on the evening of 03 June, 1963.

He was canonised on 27 April 2014.

“Quote of the Week”

“The load is not taken from us. Jesus, who carried

his own cross, knows that we are destined to be

burden carriers and the bearers of our own cross.

Moreover, he knows that we are sanctified only

under this burden and not without this burden.

Jesus does not take from us the burden God has

laid upon us. But he makes the burden easier for

us by showing us how we must carry it....”

A Testament to Freedom

NEWS FROM

ROME “Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our continuing

catechesis on Saint Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, we

now consider the Apostle’s teaching on Christian

freedom. For Paul, that freedom is a gift, the fruit of

our new life in Christ. Through baptism, we have

been freed from our bondage to sin and freed for a

life of generous love in obedience to the Gospel. Jesus tells us,

“If you continue in my word… you will know the truth, and the

truth will make you free” (Jn 8:31-32). Christian freedom is

thus grounded in the unmerited gift of God’s grace and the

truth of Christ. Through his passion, death and resurrection,

Christ reveals the depth of God’s love, and teaches us that the

total gift of ourselves in service of others, even to the point of

death, is the mark of supreme freedom. The truth that Christ

brings is in fact truthfulness about ourselves. Our journey

along the path of Christian freedom is not easy, but guided

and sustained by the love of the Crucified Lord, and by his

liberating truth, we will find our ultimate fulfilment in

accordance with God’s saving plan.”

Getting to know…

Pamela Bain

Hello, my name is Pamela Bain. When my family first came to St Patrick’s in December 1986, we were so warmly welcomed that we made St Patrick’s our spiritual home and have continued to worship here ever since.

During that time I have been engaged in various ministries. Currently I am a Reader, a Counter and a Catechist (a Special Religious Educator, taking the Good News of Jesus to our children enrolled in the State Schools). I am the Parish Coordinator for SRE and am always seeking new recruits to continue this very rewarding work.

I have two wonderful sons who, with their delightful wives, have given me four beautiful grandchildren. I look forward to spending as much time with them as I can. For thirty-seven years I worked in the NSW Department of Education, through which I taught in many country towns before returning to city schools. I loved teaching the Kindergarten children and watching them develop in their first year of school.

In retirement I joined the U3A (University of the Third Age). Holidays over the years have taken me from Cape York to Cape Leeuwin, from Hobart to Broome and many places in between. A special Highlight has been the annual visit to Melbourne for the Australian Tennis Championships. Although I have no Scottish ancestry, I have been a member of various Scottish Societies since 1973 and have enjoyed many Highland Gatherings.

While watching television I like to knit toys for family and friends. New babies in the family always get a knitted teddy.

Here at St Pat’s I have made many wonderful friends and look forward to the Saturday Vigil when I can meet up with them and share in the Lord’s Supper. I have much to be thankful for – Deo Gratias!

DID YOU KNOW…

...that October is traditionally regarded as the month to lend a special focus to the

Rosary?

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated each year on 07 October. This feast recalls the time when Christian forces defeated the Turkish fleet at the famous Battle of Lepanto on the first Sunday of October in 1571. This ended the Muslim domination of the Mediterranean and the victory was ascribed to the prayers and processions of the Rosary confraternity in Rome. Because the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary occurs in October, it is natural to extend the promotion and the praying of the Rosary to the whole month.

WEDDINGS

We pray for those couples who have had to

postpone their wedding due to the current Covid

restrictions….

We pray that this will not dampen their desire to be

united in this sacrament when circumstances

permit.

BAPTISMS

At this time, we pray for all those families who

are seeking to have their children baptised but

cannot do so because of the current Covid

restrictions….

Please uphold these children and their families in

prayer.
