“Aldo has inspired me to stand up for what I believe in, and has created an environment where every individual has a voice - which is always heard and received with integrity, and humility. Under his leadership we are working together towards a common goal, and this is the reason why I love coming to work each day.”

COUNCILLOR KATE FULTON

About AldoAldo is married to Kimberley and has three young children. He was born in Nelson as a second generation Nelsonian, educated at St Joseph’s primary school and Nelson College; and graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (marketing and management). An extensive career in management has seen appointments in New Zealand and Hong Kong, Shanghai and Sydney. He returned to Nelson in 2002 and became a Nelson City Councillor in 2007 with the goal of making a positive change for current and future generations of Nelson residents and visitors, believing that “we can make Nelson a fun, exciting, dynamic place to live, where our children can have the career, family and lifestyle options they desire.”Aldo was instrumental in the successful bid to host RWC matches in Nelson, and was the initiator and principal driver which triggered the referendum to amalgamate Nelson and Tasman councils.Aldo Miccio is currently Mayor of Nelson and was previously a councillor and Chairman of the Council’s Rugby World Cup 2011 Committee.Aldo is also a director of a number of companies and chairman/trustee for several non-profit organisations including:

• Chairman of Nelson Falcons National League Football Team• Chairman of Kiwi Energy Trust• Trustee of Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust• Trustee of Nelson Municipal Band Trust• Trustee of Nelson Civic Trust

great job of putting pathways in place for future generations. I

want this to continue, and that’s why Aldo has my vote.”

KIM PROCTOR-WESTERN

“I had the privilege of training Aldo Miccio for the community fundraiser Fight 4 Victory. I spent a lot of time with Aldo and I quickly realised how committed he is to the Nelson community. His strength of character and determination are what make him the strong and fair man he is.”

BARRY GALBRAITH - Victory Boxing

“We are a team of strong and diverse individuals. e collegiality that we have in Council really is the best it's been for some years.”

COUNCILLOR PETE RAINEY

"As a retired City Councillor of 21 years I have no reservations in supporting Aldo. Current Council is competent in nancial management and its expenditure

limited. e focus on the low rates increases by carefully scheduling infrastructural improvements indicates an ecient and understanding Council

led by Aldo. We need to support Aldo's re election as Mayor to ensure the City is well managed into the future."

EX-COUNCILLOR MIKE COTTON

“I’m excited about living in our beautiful region, with it’s thriving innovative businesses and strong communities. I believe Aldo Miccio

Club members told to pay up

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio lines up the first hoop of the croquet season with club members from around the region at the Nelson Hinemoa Club on Saturday morning. Photo: Andrew Board.

Croquet season officially opened

Suburban Club members have been told the club is in financial trouble and they each need to pay a $100 donation to help keep it afloat. In a letter dated September 4, the chairman and president of the club wrote to each of its 4800 members advising them that the club is in “substantial arrears” to the Inland Revenue Department and other creditors. Club chairman Ross Strawbridge told Nel-son Weekly the situation was “gutting” and that the general manager of the club was

no longer in the job.Included in the letter was an invoice for $100 and the plea for cash has also been promoted over the sound system in the club over the past week. But the board says it’s confident of pay-ing off the $300,000 it owes by the end of September and has received a donation of more than $128,000 by one club member.“In light of this, the board has given an un-dertaking to our bank and major creditors that all of our remaining creditors will be

cleared by September 30,” said the letter, signed by Ross Strawbridge and president Jim Reeves. It also said that the board became aware of the arrears in August as the debt had not been disclosed in monthly management reports. They say the club is trading profit-

ably after some cost cutting measures.Ross says the money has to be raised by the end of September. “We have to, there isn’t an option. The members want the club to survive so we have to do it.”He says around 500 members have already paid the donation and they would need another 4000 to follow their lead. “We just need to get this hole that has been created cleaned up and we will be fine moving forward. Because of the loyalty of the club members we will pull through.”

Nelson’s croquet season was officially opened on Saturday, with mayor Aldo Miccio playing the first “hoop” of the sea-son.Members from Nelson’s three clubs – Richmond, Riwaka and Nelson Hinemoa – were at the Nelson club on Saturday to celebrate the start of the season. The association is hosting several key tournaments this year, including the NZ National Golf Croquet champs in Decem-ber.

City could see more parking wardensPeople shopping in the CBD should expect to see parking wardens out in force after the Nelson Weekly learnt yesterday that parking enforcement could be outsourced.A recent report into the Nelson City Council’s resource man-agement has recommended that parking enforcement be con-tracted out. This will mean that the people in charge of giving out tickets and monitoring time limits will be employed to do so by a private company, which could mean more wardens on the street, checking parking tickets. While the likely cost of having a privately owned company do the job was not revealed, Nel-

son City Council chief executive Clare Hadley confirmed that the recommended contractor was Environment Inspections Lim-ited (EIL), who already provides the council with liquor licensing, noise control, dog control and pollution breach services.Parking tickets and infringe-ments accumulated more than $1 million in revenue last year, but Clare says the council was not looking to see this number grow and it was not the reason for the recommendation.Clare says the public shouldn’t see any changes to the way they

use car parking in town and that they will not see an increase in the amount charged.“It will mean no change for peo-ple in terms of parking.”

While more wardens could hit the streets in search of parking breaches, Clare says it would be up to the public whether there is an increase in tickets.

Nelson could see more parking wardens on the street if the con-tract to enforce the parking rules is outsourced.

The World is cruising to Nel-son this summer. And the Europa, Seabourn So-juorn and Hanseatic. The four cruise ships have con-firmed that they will visit the region this summer and Nel-son Tasman Tourism expects that trend to continue.NTT international marketing manager Loren Heaphy says four cruise ships have booked to come to Nelson this summer with another seven the follow-ing year. Each of the ships car-ries around 400 passengers and is seen as at the “high end” of the market. To be allowed on the Europa ship – which is arriving here on Boxing Day this year – each passenger must have a net worth of at least $5 million, with each cabin worth around $300,000 and monthly costs at $30,000.Loren says these passengers spend a lot of money and NTT has worked hard for several years to work with local opera-tors and to develop a package that suits their needs. That could include a trip to the

Abel Tasman, staying a night in a luxury lodge or shopping on Trafalgar St.She says the possibility of a 2000 person ship visiting Nel-son in the future is very real with Port Nelson now able to host ships that size. “We haven’t got any that size yet but we are working very hard on it and once we get one, and if we host it well, we’ll get a lot more.”Lynda Keene, CEO of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says Nel-son is increasingly becoming a viable competitor with other national ports. “Nelson is re-nowned internationally as a premium tourist destination, and attracting more cruise ships to the region has been high on our list of priorities.”She says the region has a strong reputation in hosting cruise

ships after last summer and she sees the market growing over the next few years. “Last week we hosted one of the largest inbound tour agencies in the region to help with cruise ship package development and the agent was very impressed with what the region has to offer.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the region will benefit from an increasing number of ships visiting the region. “Nel-son Tasman Tourism and Port Nelson have done a great job in helping to attract more cruise ships to our region. My aim is to work with local retailers, Uniquely Nelson, Port Nelson and Nelson Tasman Tourism to see if we can put together some packages that encourage visitors to stay within the CBD, and revitalise that economy.”

11 cruise ships coming to town

The Car Company’s September drive for the women’s and children’s refuge has begun, with a street appeal collecting the first thousand dollars last week. The Car Company last year teamed up with the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge to help raise its profile in the com-munity and some much-needed money. It was so successful – raising more than $18,000 – that they’ve decided to do it again this year. The Car Company has organised collection days every Wednes-day this month from 11am to 2pm and a quiz night at the end of the month. The first of the collection days was held last Wednesday with members of the Tasman Makos rugby team also lending their hand, helping to collect money. The Car Company’s marketing manager, Be-linda Koloamatangi, says it was great to be out on the street and seeing the sup-port in the community for the organisa-tion.“Most people were really generous and the Makos were great, they got right in there and people were happy to reach in their pockets to support the cause.”The collection will also be held on Sep-tember 11 and 25 outside BNZ on Tra-falgar St and on September 18 in Sundial Square in Richmond.Car Company owner Shane Drummond says he’s rapt to be able to support the refuge again this year and is keen to hear from anyone who may want to donate items for the quiz night on September 27.

“Last year we had people donate all sorts, even a brand new television, and that helped us raise as much as we did. So anyone with any big ticket items can get in touch with Belinda and hopefully we’ll be able to get some cash out of it for the refuge.”Refuge manager, Trudi Brand, says the promotion was fantastic for the organi-sation last year and she’s hoping it will be just as big this September. “We were blown away by the support of the Car Company last year and them doing it again is huge for us. We’re excited and

thrilled that they’re at it again.”Cash donations can also be made at any Car Company yard in the region; there are two in Nelson, one in Tahunanui and one in Richmond. Shane says being able to support the charity is extremely rewarding and he was shocked with how much it has to deal with and with so little.“They do a bloody good job and it’s a bloody tough job. Every neighbourhood in our city is affected by domestic vio-lence and if we can help them do their job, then great.”

cAnDiDATE clockS Up 5000 homES: Last week Nelson mayoral candidate Brian McGurk visited his 5000th home in Nel-son since beginning his campaign. Brian says one of his key platforms was engag-ing with the community and the door-to-door campaign was important to him. He said he has received positive feedback. “It seems I’m the only candidate going door to door. People have mentioned that I’m the first candidate that has ever visited them.”

nAvY Ship in porT: HMNZS WEL-LINGTON is due to leave Port Nelson at 10am tomorrow after arriving from the sub-Antarctic last week. The ship is an off-shore patrol vessel (85m) with a comple-ment of 59 personnel. The ship has been berthed at Layup No.1, off Vickerman St.

nBcF DonATES cASh: The Nelson Bays Community Foundation (NBCF) received over seventy applications for grants in their distribution round this year. This year there were more funds available and the committee decided on granting to sev-en charities: Alzheimers Nelson Tasman; the Hearing Association; Motueka Victim Support; Murchison Theatre; Nelson Tas-man Multicultural Council; Richmond Riding for the Disabled and Whakatu Rid-ing for the Disabled.

Helping collect money for the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge last week were from left; Tasman Makos Liam Squire and Shane Christie, refuge manager Trudi Brand, Belinda Koloamatangi and Heath Scott, both of the Car Company. Photo: Andrew Board.

Online voting appears to be a defi-nite for the 2016 local body elec-tions with the local government minister announcing a trial of the technology. The announcement came the day after a Nelson Weekly article high-lighted the case of a Nelson man who cannot vote in this year’s election as he is overseas and the electronic option isn’t available in council elections. This despite its widespread use in other elections, including the general election. The only way for the man to cast his vote was to al-low someone else to do it for him, which is illegal.Local Govern-ment Minister Chris Tremain an-nounced that the trial of online vot-ing will take place in the 2016 local authority elec-tions.“Online transac-tions are the way of the future and the Government is committed to rolling out digital services for New Zealanders,” says Chris. “I have asked the Department of Internal Affairs to put together a working party from across government and local authorities and with infor-mation technology experts. They will consider the options, costs and security issues involved in on-line voting.”The Electoral Voting Act allows the use of online voting but the regula-

tions haven’t been written for local body elections. But with the min-ister now pushing that through, it seems likely online voting will be an option in 2016.“Voter turnout in local body elec-tions is traditionally low and we need to look at other ways to encourage people to become in-volved in the democratic process. Online voting will be more con-

venient and appeal to young vot-ers. It will also make it easier for people with disabilities to vote,” says Chris.Warwick Lampp, the chief return-ing officer for Electionz which runs the election on behalf of Nel-son City Council, says he supports the move for the online option to be made available as there were problems every council election with people unable to vote and this would solve many of them.

After six years as Fashion Island, the shopping centre will be known as Morrison Square from next month. The change in name coincides with a fresh look that is currently underway at the shopping centre.Centre manager Nicola Dolan says that the new name has been in the planning for over a year, and says that the heritage of the Morrison St entrance, and better reflects the current retail offering.

“We are all very excited about the name change, as it clearly says who we really are now; it locates us better and doesn’t limit people’s understanding of what we offer,” she says. “Not only do we have quality fashion retailers here, we have homeware, stationery, natural beauty products, and wonderful cafes and restaurants, so we are a destination for a wide range of Nelsonians.”Fashion Island tenants were informed of the name change

at a closed breakfast meeting last week. They were supportive of the change, which officially takes place on October 9.Ange Broomfield, manager of Andrea Biani says she likes the new name. “Love it, love it. I think it is fantastic and it works so well with who we are.”The owner of Columbus Coffee, Ian Brassfield says the brand is genuine and honest. “The name Morrison Square describes our link to the CBD really well. I really like it.”

A Tahunanui man has been told the only way he can vote in this year’s local body election is to break the law.Daryl, who’s surname we’ve chosen not publish, leaves for a holiday in Turkey next week and won’t return until after the local body elections in mid-October. He says he’s been in touch with the electoral officer about the situation and asked if he could vote online, an option given to those vot-ing overseas in the general election. But he

was told that option doesn’t exist for coun-cil elections and he couldn’t vote at the New Zealand consulate in Istanbul either.Posting letters to Turkey can be “dodgy” says Daryl and he wouldn’t trust it to ar-rive in time for him to cast his vote and get it back to New Zealand before the cut off.The gap caused by not having an electronic option left around a dozen Nelsonians with similar problems at the last council elec-tion and more are expected to be affected

this year. Daryl says one “informal” option was given to him by the electoral office: al-low someone else to open his mail and cast the vote for him. The problem with that is that it breaks the electoral act, meaning it is against the law.

Warwick Lampp, the chief returning of-ficer for Electionz which runs the election on behalf of Nelson City Council, says he would never recommend someone to break the law but if the voting packs are sent back correctly filled in then they are none the wiser and the vote is counted. “Most people use common sense with that, but it is illegal and it is an issue.”

Stoke’s local Scout hall has re-ceived a welcome makeover, turning “bland” walls into a work of art.A mural, completed by Nelson

artist Kelly Doreen, now graces the Scouts hall on Songer St and was officially celebrated on Sun-day along with an open day for the organisation.

The project was completed thanks to a $3000 grant from the Nelson City Council, Nayland Scaffolding, Trafalgar Paints and Nelson Waterblasters.

Nelson builder wins top apprentice awardNelson carpentry apprentice Andrew Higgins has been named the Upper South Island Region Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 Apprentice of the Year. The 23 year old, employed by Dusty Builders Ltd in Nelson and trained through NMIT, impressed judges who say Andrew interviewed well and has strong overall industry knowledge for someone so young in the trade.“We were extremely impressed at how proud Andrew was to work for the company he represented - his passion and drive to be successful was very evident and his attention to detail was impeccable. We believe he will be a leading figure in the industry in years to come.”Andrew was awarded a range of prizes, including his choice of either a study grant to the value of $2000 or $2000 to spend at Carters and an Outward Bound Leadership Programme valued at over $3600, as well as the coveted title of Upper South Island Region Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 apprentice of the year.Andrew will now go on to compete against the eight other regional Apprentice of the Year winners at the national finals in Auckland where each apprentice will

undertake a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel. They will then compete in a practical carpentry challenge where each apprentice will be tasked with completing a small building project, which will be gifted to local charities on completion. The practical challenge will take place at The Cloud in Auckland on Friday, October 11 and will be open to the public from 8am to 12pm.The winner of the Registered Master Builders Carters 2013 Apprentice of the Year will then be announced at an awards dinner at The Cloud, hosted by MC Paul Ego.

Noisy drummer no drama for neighbours

Drummer Andreas Vitz has built a soundproof room in his basement so he can practice without annoying his neighbours. Photo: Andrew Board. As a professional drummer and drum

teacher Andreas Vitz has confessed to annoying his neighbours from time to time. But those days are now at an end after he installed a new soundproof room in his basement.Andreas says he and his wife moved into their new Tahunanui home this year and after “annoying” some neighbours at their old home, he decided to not put his new neighbours through the same noise and install a soundproof room. The result is impressive.Andreas says he can now play as loud as possible and the neighbours, about 30 metres away, can’t hear a thing. He is also a drum teacher so says his drums can be played up to eight hours a day and that he’s thrilled with the

new room which cost “a lot” but he wouldn’t say exactly how much. The two main walls have two layers with a space in between them, two doors and special tiles on the floor, covered by heavy carpet. The false ceiling also helps block the noise and like the walls, has four layers of special gib board and two layers of special insulation with an air space between.Andreas says the investment has paid off and he’s thrilled that he can jam all day and still have the neighbours say hi to him the following morning.“I’m really happy with how it’s turned out, there was a lot of research that went into it and even the builder wasn’t sure if it would work. But I’m really happy with it, so are my students and of course my neighbours.”

Police: teen’s disappearance ‘suspicious’The disappearance three and a half years ago of Nelson teenager Leo Lipp-Neighbours has finally been labelled suspicious by policePolice investigating the disappearance, say information received from the public has led them to the conclusion that Leo’s disappearance may not be an accident.Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney says a

dedicated investigation team had spent the last 10 months closely reviewing all aspects of 19 year-old Leo’s disappearance and the searches completed for him.Leo was last seen in Watson St, Nelson on Sunday January 24, 2010. Neither he nor his distinctive orange Toyota Corolla station wagon has been seen since.Mark says police were continuing to

receive a constant trickle of information from the public and that had built a picture that led the investigation team to the conclusion that the disappearance now appears suspicious.“The wide range of information we have received leaves me considering the fact that Leo’s disappearance is the result of another person’s actions,” says Mark.

In 2010 Crimestoppers offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the location of Leo and his vehicle. That reward is still in place. Crimestoppers will determine the amount of the reward to be paid, and will, if necessary, apportion payment where there is more than one claimant. Anyone who has information can call Nelson Police on 546 3840.

Last Night of the Proms

The Tahunanui Business Association and the Tahunanui Community Centre are thanking their community for the response to the recent events they have organised to draw attention to issues in their community. The organisers were delighted to see over 300 concerned citizens and children at the recent march, held to draw attention to safety issues in the Tahunanui shopping area. The number of people sent a clear message to NZTA and the council, from the community, about their wish to have this matter dealt with and not delayed by politics. The organisers also want to acknowledge the support they have received from the NZ automobile association in relation to their road safety concerns.More recently there was standing room only at a community forum which covered three main issues, Safety in the Tahunanui community, the development of a proposed shopping village by the Wakatu incorporation and road safety. The community have indicated they want to be heardsaid Mike Thomas (Chairman of the Tahuna Business Association) so we are planning to hold further forums in the next few months.

APPLEBY COUNTRY FAIR: Jessie Chaplin, 9, Will Horncastle, 5, Kase Edwards, 5, Elysia Green, 9, and Emily Rogers, 9, enjoying the first gala of the spring season at the Appleby Country Fair. The event, held on Saturday, is the first of many school galas to come for the Nelson and Tasman regions. A huge turnout saw thousands of fairgoers enjoy the fresh produce, trees and flowers, clothing, knickknacks and more on offer. And in true country style, the baby animal nursery, pony rides and woodchopping went down a treat too. While proceeds from the event are un-confirmed as yet, the school fair has well and truly beaten last year's record and has reached the $42,000 mark. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Ratepayers grill council candidatesIt wasn’t your usual marketplace but members of the public were able to shop around for their vote on Saturday at a Municipal Market held at the Nelson Suburban Club.Organised by the Nelson Residents Association, Nelson’s local body election candidates set up shop and talked policy to locals, who came along to put the hard questions to them about their vision for the re-gion.The ‘meet the candidates’ event allowed people from the commu-nity to get up close and personal with candidates and cover issues of concern, from funding for the arts, roading and infrastructure, to money spent and community pro-jects. With no time limits or struc-tured set up, candidates were able to sit down and talk freely to mem-bers of the public, all in one place.Nola Leov of Enner Glynn says she came along to the event “because of that thing that killed the cat –

curiosity”. She says as a believer in taking local government seriously she jumped at the opportunity to meet the candidates and thought the idea of a marketplace was "ab-solutely brilliant." A hot topic of discussion on her side of the table was council spending and urging better housekeeping, as she felt the NCC has “spent too much money” on what is unnecessary. “Everyone I have spoken to is full of great ideas though. It looks as though our next council is going to be very lively.”Mayoral candidate Rachel Reese says she enjoyed the market and thought it was helpful, especially for the new candidates. “It's great for them, because people really want to meet them and put a face to the name."

Nelsonians continue to spend moreNelson’s spending growth continues to impress, with sales increases of eight per cent in August.Figures released yesterday by payments provider Paymark show spending through the Paymark network continued to increase in the final month of winter, with figures up 8.47 per cent in Nelson from August 2012 to August 2013, up on the national average of 7.6 per cent.

Nationally, the surge of activity in the last three months has been the largest jump, in seasonally adjusted terms, since the three months ending February 2008. Spending on items, excluding fuel, was up a seasonally adjusted 2.7 per cent in the June to August three-month period compared with March to May this year. When including the more volatile fuel spend, the quarterly growth rate rises to

3.5 per cent.Paul Whiston, Paymark acting CEO, says the ongoing growth suggests the positive trend is more than just an anomaly. “While the growth spurt we’ve seen over the last few months has come during the traditional quiet winter months, and it’s still inconsistent across regions and sectors, it’s very promising to see the higher spending patterns continue.”

Paymark, which processes around three quarters of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, saw that building outlets and hospitality providers were once again the big winners during August. In Nelson, $77 million was spent through the Paymark network in August, up on $71 million last year. The number of transactions also grew 1.5 million, up 7.1 per cent.

Nelson has fallen behind the eight ball for the second year in a row, failing at its attempt to regain the Seddon Pool Tournament by the slimmest of margins.Marlborough Pool Association took out the two-day competition, held at Club Waimea, after winning 61 frames overall, just one ahead of the Nelson team that also finished runners up in 2012. The Seddon Tournament is the biggest of its kind in the Top of the South, and is what “every individual male and female player works towards”, according to team spokesperson Donna Arps. The top ten players from each province in the Seddon districts make up each

team with just eight competing in each round. In the men’s draw Nelson drew 6-6 with Buller and 6-6 with Marlborough before going onto beat Westland 8-4 and West Coast 10-2 while the women’s team beat Buller 11-1 and West Coast 10-2 but tied with Westland 6-6 and lost 9-3 to Marlborough. Buller men took out the men’s section with 33 points, three ahead of Nelson, and the women’s trophy went the way of Marlborough who finished with 34 points, four above Nelson.Donna says the Nelson team, which last won the tournament in 2011, played their hearts out but were disappointed to come so close only to lose.

Forget X-Box, PlayStation or computer games, a new trend is taking off in Nelson and it’s actually an old trend.Pottering About owner Steve Wilson, a self-confessed “board game nerd”, started a board game night at his inner city business about a year ago and the monthly gather-ings have been attracting more and more faces ever since.Steve says his cafe is usually packed during the games nights – which are held in con-junction with Crackerjack Toys. “We’re kind of board game nerds and we have a lot of people who are into board games so that’s how it started but now we get all sorts of

people that will come down, including a lot of families.”He says the atmosphere in the café is really good with people talking and joking while playing their games.“A lot of these board games you can play on your iPad now but these nights are about bringing back that sitting around have fun and talking while you’re playing the game instead of staring at a wall. And the games have a lot of the same attractions,” he says. The next board game night is being held on September 20 at Pottering About in Bux-ton Square. Entry is a gold coin but all the games are free to play.

Concept plans for the proposed waterfront upgrade will be unveiled at the Theatre Royal this Friday night. The event will provide an opportunity for councillors, developers and members of the public to view and consider opportunities to safe guard the waterfront precinct, providing a long-term vision and securing future possibilities for the area says Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Irving Smith Jack Architects have prepared the concept drawings for several council-owned sites on Wakefield Quay, previously occupied by Four Seasons and Reliance Engineering. “Concept plans show an attractive area intended for retail, hospitality and recreation, with increased parking and shared pathway connections between the waterfront and the city,” says Aldo.Councillor Pete Rainey says they have consulted with Port Nelson who have said they will be looking at slight boundary adjustments which would enable greater access to the sites and the water. The final drafts of the concept plan and drawings will be presented on Friday, starting at 5pm and a presentation at 5.30pm.

Council signs:It annoys me that councillors are allowed to put signs up all over the

place at election time yet businesses get fined for having signs on the road side be-cause it is a distraction to drivers. Seems like double standard to me. (Via text).

Weekly's 3rd birthday:Congratulations, great little news-paper. Brenda Kenny.

I see it's your birthday, well done. I enjoy reading the Weekly every

week. (Via text).

Should the Tahuna modellers pond get fixed?

Sure. As long as it doesn't involve taxpayers' money.

Taylor O'Carroll-Reed.

I'd rather see money go towards that than painting the clock tow-er.... Surely that pond has to be a health hazard? Nikole Berkett.

Yeah but not $1m worth. Can't you just make the

P.D guys do it?! Lauren Saunders.

Yes! It should be a priority. Kristyn Musson.

Yes, needs to be fixed and would love to see the PD

boys hauling out the muck. Diana McClelland.

Many years ago a group of us kids rocked up and

pulled a heap of the weed out with garden forks etc in return for the council to offer us a dozer to turn our hand cut one lane BMX track to a multi lane circle one. We did a great job. One million to do that sounds very rich. Tony Garry.

They should divert a stream to flow through

there some how, or use the tidal currents better so it cleans itself. Liam Malone.

Yes and yes to the PD boys. Great idea and how about putting it to

use, some sort of activity, does it have to be fenced? Donna Jan.

New name for Fashion Island:Morrison Square sounds too mas-culine and ridiculous. Lyn Stacey.

Don't like it. Everyone will still re-fer to it as Fashion Island.

Kaylaa McLellan.

Much better. 'Fashion Island'? It's a bit Gold Coast.

Pohutakawa Charlotte.

Much better, its not an island. If anything it should have been called

coffee island because the only freestanding building in the group was the cafe. Alysha Tarrant.

Much better, "Fashion Island" cheesy and embarrassing, yes agree

very Gold Coast. Billie Stockman.

Less rebranding.... more shops!!! Tom Alesana.

I like it but agree that many will still call it Fashion Island. I still call

our corner dairy the 'Four Square', even though it has been an 'On the Spot' for many years. Sharon Tarapipipi.

Rebranding might work, but there needs to be more interest in the

place. Something to make it stand out from the rest. Once Kmart/Warehouse is open in Richmond and the new complex up in Wakatu Square running there won't be a lot of need to go down that end if town let alone Nelson city. Just a thought. Ka-zmera Sellers.

Morrison Square sounds better and makes more sense, all the best

with the rebranding. Janice Mortensen.

I like it. The new name fits with Nelson CBD really well - and there

are more than just fashion shops there now. It had a great vibe down there today with the Farmers Market - the local beef pie was amazing!!! Emma Thompson.

So much better - I always thought the word Fashion was too limiting

for the array of shops. Adrienne Ford.

Couple celebrate 70 years of marriage:Lovely story on the Teece's, lovely couple. (Via text).

Beautiful xTania Morris.

No internet voting means man can't vote:Bloody hell Darryl. Just get ye mom to do it for ya lad. Dunn make a

fuss aboot it. TheGreatScot (via website).

It's stupid that you can't do it on-line. Everything else is. (Via text).

Peggy Martin wanted to earn her first set of new golf clubs. Having started off with a second hand set that she didn’t know “one end from the other” in 1952, Peggy’s goal was to play to a 16 handicap, which was just two below her own at the time. But of course it just so happened Peggy achieved her goal around the time of her birthday, and was helped by her late husband Richard who went halves with her on a new set. Peggy used those clubs right throughout her amateur playing career, which was highlighted by being the ladies immediate champion at the Totaradale Golf Club, until 2007 when her “aging bones were the boss” and she had to retire, passing them down to a family member.Speaking ahead of Totaradale Golf Club’s 75th anniversary which is being held on October 5 and 6, the club’s life member explains that earning your new golfing equipment was just “what happened back then”. “When the blokes came back from overseas you couldn’t just go out and buy top of the range. We were quite happy with our two clubs and a putter.”Peggy, who didn’t start playing golf until her children were old enough, has many stories of when Richard treated her to new golfing equipment. “I said to my husband ‘if I win the championship will you buy me something?’ I came home, he asked how I got on, I said ‘oh, okay’. He asked how much I won by, I said ‘oh

by about six or five’. Which is bloody good.”Because Richard was a butcher, Peggy says most of the time on the green happened during the weekends. And one day shortly after her own championship victory, she was handed an envelope. So, what was inside? “This one,” Peggy smiles, pointing at the ring on her finger. “That was always a highlight, playing the golf to earn the prize.”Growing up in Wakefield, Totaradale has been Peggy’s only golf club throughout her 60 plus year playing career. She played rounds on Tuesdays, which was ladies day, and then once on the weekend. Peggy was a keen sportsperson, also dabbling in cricket and tennis, but says golf was always number one. “I made a silly statement once that golf was a good game spoiled. You hit a ball and walk for miles to chase it. But I had to retract that phrase quite quickly. I enjoyed golf and I amazed myself that I could actually play it.”Peggy, who now lives at Oakwoods, says social aspect of the club, which prides itself on being the friendliest, was second to none, and it’s something she will also look back on fondly. “We all had families and you couldn’t afford to go to the night clubs so we made our own fun. I think Totaradale would take the prize for hospitality that’s for sure.”

TUESDAY 10 September 2013NelsonYour Community Newspaper Weekly

Liquorland Nelson is celebrating their

second birthday, and to make the most of the occasion they want you to join the

party with them.Gavin Snowball and Cheryl Scott started in the business just two short years ago, and the store just keeps growing from strength to strength. Not only have they gained a wide range of loyal customers who choose their store whenever they have something special to celebrate, but

they have also managed to increase the wide variety of products in store, all while keeping their prices as competitive as possible.

Being around for two years means there have been a lot of bottles popped, beers opened and glasses clinked in and around Nelson in Gavin and Cheryl’s honour, so this weekend have another drink for them and call into the store to see what celebratory sales are on offer.Gavin says the journey has been amazing and their second year in business has brought more excitement than the first, with new customers heading instore all the time, and a great group of locals who call the store their regular.“It’s been really great

meeting everyone and to getting to know each customer when they visit. We would like to thank the public for all of the support we have received from the community over the last two years, it’s been fantastic.”The success of the business

has meant they needed to grow their team, with the addition of more part time staff. Adding team members and growing in size hasn’t altered customer service though, and the fantastic level of care the customers get from Gavin, Cheryl and the friendly staff is all part of the Liquorland Nelson culture. You’ll always get a friendly smile, you’ll always be greeted when you enter and most importantly, you’ll always walk out with the item that you came in looking for, or better.“Customer service is really important to us, and that is the reason we opened the store. We love talking to customers and helping them find the best products for the occasion. We pride ourselves on our service.”Gavin and Cheryl are not only setting the standards for retailers here in Nelson, but they are also standing out on the national stage after being awarded gold and being named ‘Liquorland Franchisee of the Year’ for 2012.

This was a huge achievement for the store, and proves they are onto a great thing, and the feedback was warmly welcomed by the local Liquorland team. “It’s always

Christmas function, work do or end of year party. They can help you pick out a variety of different drinks to choose

Now that’s great service. This Saturday, head down and enjoy the festivities at Liquorland Nelson. They are turning 2 years old and want to celebrate in style with a big birthday bash. Head on into the store and help Gavin and Cheryl, and the rest of the team celebrate the day. There will be lots of prizes and giveaways, in store tastings, beer and food matching, the Steinlager truck will be on hand and there will be a load of really sharp specials to be had.

nice to win things, but for us to win the award was

really a great acknowledgement that we are on the right track. For what we are doing to be recognised by our peers was

great.”Gavin and Cheryl continue to add to the huge variety that their Liquorland store offers, with a huge range of spirits both local and imported, beers, wines, RTD’s

as well as non-alcoholic beverages. While their store is locally owned and operated, being a part of a franchise means that Liquorland Nelson is part of a larger buying network of over 70 other stores

around New Zealand. A larger buying network means cheaper prices, and they are proud to be able to offer a better deal.Based on their extensive knowledge of great wine, the team pride themselves on being able to advise which wine goes best with what food, and which ones are best enjoyed as is – on their own. From reds to whites, sparkling to ports, you’ll be sure to find the right answer from one of the ‘experienced’ staff. Gavin has also introduced a one of a kind offer which only his Liquorland store

offers, which is a 6 pack of wine special. There are great savings to be had this way, and there will be some quality labels popping up.You are also well and truly spoilt for choice when it comes to the range of beer. With so many origins and styles it can be hard to choose, but the team makes it easy to narrow it down to just a few cold ones to have to pick between. As Nelson is the well known craft beer

capital of the country, Gavin thought it was only fitting that they offer their customers the best craft beer experience they could, and have introduced a brand new Craft Beer Growler station, which is one of only two in the South Island. “Getting into the craft beer side of things is just one more thing we can offer our customers. Having a local beer on tap is exciting, and the novelty of the Growler is half the fun.”Simply fill your own with Stoke Smokey Ale, Hancocks Wheat Beer or Black Dog

or just drop by for a sample taste. They have currently got one more tap to go on, so be sure to let them know any of your suggestions for your favourite craft beer, and you could be filling up with it at Liquorland Nelson soon.Their whisky range continues to grow, and there is now a huge number of different whiskies to choose from. Whether you fancy a tipple of a Highland, Speyside, Irish or Islay, you’ll find top quality

whiskies at Liquorland Nelson. If you are a whisky fan, talk to Cheryl about joining the malt whisky club and make the most of the benefits of this VIP group. While the year has flown by for Gavin,

Cheryl and the rest of the team, they are also aware that things have flown by for their customers too and want to remind everyone that a long hot summer is just around the corner, so it’s worth starting to think about the different options available to you when you organise your

around New Zealand.

Chomp Pale Ale

or just drop by for a sample taste.

Cheryl and the rest of the team, they are also aware that things have flown by for their customers too and want to remind everyone that a long hot summer is just around the corner, so it’s worth starting to think about the different options available to you when you organise your

www.nelsonparentandchildexpo.co.nzThis weekend everything baby to teen comes together at the third annual Nelson Parent and Child Expo.Every year the Expo just keeps getting bigger and better, offering families from all over our region a chance to talk to some of the best local experts in products and service for the whole family. Due to the growing success of the expo this year’s event has moved to a much bigger venue to allow for more exhibitors, more entertainment and even more local attendees. People attending the event can expect to see a wide variety of products and demonstrations from both local small businesses and other exhibitors from further afield.Event organisers Prue Fothergill and Keela Mc-Bride say the event is a must attend for anyone

and everyone in the community, with a huge variety of child care, services and product specialists lined up. “This event is non profit and is really aimed at putting local families in touch with people who can offer the very best in advice and services for children. It’s a great way to not only support parents, but business owners who have great products to share too.”A highlight of the event will be the Great Baby Gear and Maternity Swap which provides the oppor-tunity to clear out your used baby gear and maternity clothing and swap them for items you need, or sell them. Proceeds from the swap will go to Sands, Stillbirth and Neo-natal Death Support Nelson, so you can de-clutter while supporting an amazing cause. The swap costs $5 to enter. Simply drop your swap items to the Tra-falgar Centre on Friday afternoon/evening together with the down-loadable form from www.nelson-parentandchildexpo.co.nz. Af-ter 11am it will be open to the pub-

lic to purchase goods with cash and entry will be free.In conjunction with the Nelson Parent and Child Expo, best sell-ing parenting author Nigel Latta is bringing to Nelson a hugely enter-taining evening on how to get kids through the first ten years of their lives and stay sane at the same time. You can catch ‘Nigel Latta - The First Decade’ this Thursday at the Trafalgar Centre. Purchase your ticket via www.eventfinda.co.nz, or from Ykids Reception, and hang on to it after the show, because it will get you free entry into the expo on Saturday.Check out the Nelson Parent and Child Expo this Saturday between 10am and 4pm at the Trafalgar Centre. Nelson’s locally owned and operated home for quality outdoor fabric products is celebrating. And while the well known business has been around since 1989, new owner Christine Clark took over the operation just one year ago, and wants to say a huge thank you for the local support she’s been given. One year on, and TM Cov-ers has gone from strength to strength. The business is now an easily recognised market leader in the top of the south, servicing a wide range of customers from Nelson, through to Golden Bay, the West Coast, Marl-borough and everywhere in between. The 12 months since Christine first opened the doors to TM Covers has been an exciting time for the business. With more satisfied customers than ever leaving with the perfect product for their needs, and new clients discover-

ing the team’s expertise daily, it’s been full steam ahead since Christine first set foot in the door.

“It really has been a fantastic year. I’ve loved getting to know each and every customer that comes through the door. Getting to the bottom of exactly what they need and knowing we can provide a quality solution is great. I want to say a big thank you to the continued sup-port of all of our

loyal customers, and welcome new ones to call in and see what TM Covers is all about.”As the business has progressed, it’s become clear that it offers so much more than what the previous name ‘Trans-

port and Marine Covers’ suggested, so a recent name change has taken place to reflect that. By shortening it to TM Covers, the wider variety of products

and services the business can cater for is now incorporated says Christine. “A major part of the busi-ness is products tailor made to the transport and marine sector, but we wanted to reflect that we can basically do anything for anyone, and the new name says that better.”The wide variety of products available from TM Cov-ers ranges from shade sails to outdoor blinds, tarpaulins, truck covers, truck curtains, PVC covers, calf shelters, caravan covers, awnings and boat covers. While these can be simple, practical solutions, made to order products are also a specialty. Christine’s team of experienced designers and manufacturers can provide the solution to any project

and put simply - if you can imagine it they can make it. Because their can do attitude and inno-vation is part and parcel to each and every job at hand, the team can produce a quality result in a timely and efficient manner every time.Christine says she is always in awe of how the de-signers and manufacturers can come up with the perfect solution for any project, based purely on a simple idea or drawing brought into the work-shop by a customer. “A lot of the time a customer might come in and have an issue or an idea of what they need, and the team can just take that and run with it, producing something so perfect and custom made for the job. It’s amazing.”Because the team creates one of a kind solutions for their clients, no two days spent at TM Cov-ers are the same says Christine and that is what makes the business so unique.“The huge variety of what we do is simply amaz-ing. One day I will have a truck driver in here wanting a new curtain, the next I’ll be out on a fishing vessel. The next day I could be helping a

client pick out a fabric for their new outdoor cushions, and the next I’ll be out on a farm somewhere organising a calf shelter. Who knows what tomorrow could bring?”As well as providing products for the marine, transport, agricultural and horticultur-al sectors, right through to the industrial, educational, mining and aviation indus-tries, Christine wants to let the community know just how dedicated they are to residential tasks too, from shade sails for your outdoor dining area, to the smallest repair and everything in be-tween. Outdoor fabric solutions are a cost-effective way to get creative and enhance or make over an entertainment area. With products such as awnings, outdoor cushions and beanbags, you can create or rejuvenate an area you'll love using all year round with friends and family. Christine and the team have a range of outdoor fabrics in all styles and colours to suit any home and can help you with your DIY projects too, such as re-covering chairs or couches for your outdoor area. There is a style to suit any lifestyle featuring great colours, pat-terns and using UV, marine grade fabric that is tough yet stylish.

The TM Covers team is more than happy to visit you in your home, free of charge, to create a solution for your outdoor living. So whether it is a shade sail to increase your summer use of your outdoor areas, clear blinds to

protect you from the cooler breezes or mesh blinds giving shelter, shade and privacy, they can help. The team has just finished a weekend long stint at the Home & garden Show, giving advice to locals about their

projects. They invite anyone who is planning a special outdoor project to call in and have a chat with them about their options.“We can truly put our hand to any task, whether it’s an outdoor umbrella, or a pool cover, we can sort it. We pride ourselves on being versatile enough to help you with the biggest of projects to the smallest of tasks.”If the TM Covers work-shop is the creative hub of

the business, then the showroom is the heart of it. Warm, sunny and filled with examples and ideas, this should be your first stop if you are looking for in-spiration or a solution to your outdoor product needs. Not only will you find a friendly face to discuss your ideas with, but you’ll also find a range of handy ac-cessories. They carry a range of leather, velcro, stainless steel and plastic ac-cessories for any project, alongside an unrivaled range of webbing that can’t be found anywhere else. Everything from rope, bungy, even carry bags can be found, so pop in and have a browse or ask the team if you have something specific you’re looking for. Chances are, they’ll have just the thing. If you are in the transport industry, then talk to TM Covers about your truck curtain repairs. They provide a mobile truck curtain repair and cer-tification service to the greater region with a rapid turnaround time to get you back on the road. Either drive into the workshop or they can come to you.TM Covers is also home to Nelson's widest range of hire tarpaulins. Their

range of more than 100 tarps are available for hire at all times. Waterproof and clean, they all have double rows of reefers and tie-downs and can be adapted to your every need.Tarpaulins can be picked up from the yard or easily shipped to the required location, so just talk to the team about what would suit you best.As their reputation for providing great problem solving and superior solutions has grown, TM Covers have be-come the one stop shop for outdoor fabric products. Going to the London Olympics was a dream come true for hockey interna-tional Anita Punt but she still doesn't like to talk about the result. While finishing inside the top four in the world would be a welcome result for any New Zealand hockey team, fourth place at an Olympic Games is often considered the worst position to fin-ish, coming within one more spot of a medal.Although Anita came home empty handed, the experience is something she will never forget and to recognize her efforts, the fastest woman in world hockey was presented with an Olympic pin from Sport Tasman on Friday. The pin -- which is given to every ath-lete that has represented New Zealand at the Olympics -- has her Olympic number engraved on it, and was last presented in Nelson to Golden Bay cy-clist Jack Bauer.Anita described the presentation, which was held during the conclusion of the Marie Fry Trophy secondary school tournament, as "pretty special," before the pin was officially pinned on by for-mer Olympian Jeff Rackley. While Jack's presentation was held fol-lowing the Games last year, Anita's busy schedule was finally vacated last

week and a fleeting visit back to Nel-son doubled as the perfect opportunity, according to Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir. “I know she is fast, but we have really struggled over the last two years to catch up with Anita to award her with this pin," says Nigel ."It’s just awesome that we are finally getting a chance to present Anita with this honour."The 122 cap Black Stick, who already has a silver medal from the Common-wealth Games in Delhi, says the Olym-pic Games was the ultimate honour. "I guess thinking about it now it's a huge honour and growing up here I never would have thought I'd get to go. I re-

member always watching it on TV but being there just changes your life."A well known athlete in her own right, Anita admits her inner sports fan came out when walking through the Olympic Village where thousands of other inter-national sporting superstars were based. "You'll just be strolling along and bump into LeBron James, Usain Bolt and Mo Farrah," she says. "I really wanted a pic-ture with Usain Bolt but I actually ate my lunch too quick and he was gone. The other girls got a picture and I was so gutted but you got to remember that they're there to compete, so you try to respect them."Committed to the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup next year, Anita was more hesitant when asked about competing at the next Olympic Games in 2016. "At the moment I'm going year by year. After that I'll reas-sess and see where my life's taking me, what I wanna do, who's coaching, what the team's like. It's a long time away un-til Rio still so next year the focus is on making the teams."And you never know, the fastest wom-en's hockey player in the world might even be running on the track at the next Olympics after a reasonably successful sprinting stint over summer. "If I didn't make it for hockey I'd definitely be try-ing to go but maybe more for the relay squad. But we'll see. I'm going to con-tinue to do it because it's good for my hockey and it's fun."

fooTbAll: AMI Nelson Suburbs cap-tain Mark Johnston was the big winner at the club’s annual prize giving on Saturday, scooping both the Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year awards. Mark, who captained the side to second in the Robbie’s Premier League, was a rock at the back all season alongside Jonathan Gough who was deservedly named Most Promising Player after making the successful step up from division one. Others to pick up major awards were Supporters Player of the Year winner Ryan ‘Skippy’ Stewart and Young Player of the Year Coey Turipa. Player-coach Ben Wright was the golden boot win-ner with 13 goals for the season – enough to see him second in the league charts.

MoTorSporT: Nelson’s Ben Hunt still leads the New Zealand Rally Championship with one round to go but it might not be for long. Ben finished second at the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally on Saturday, be-hind Richard Mason, and currently has 109 championship points. But drivers will have to drop their worst points scoring round, which would put Hayden Paddon on top with Ben in third. The final event of the year will be in four weeks in Masterton, a win there would go a long way to bringing the rally title to Nelson in a month's time.

The first round of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club Cross Country Series was raced on the lower Codger’s Trails on Sunday. The race was a short course multi-lap event which required plenty of gear changing on an undulating circuit.A large turnout of rid-ers started en masse up the Tantragee Rd turning on to the track at Summit Rd. Under 17 rider Scott Barr showed he is a rider with a strong future as he left the field behind with a scorching first lap of 11mins 46sec.Meg Bichard was the in-form rider of the women’s category, edging out Ingrid Richter by 1 min over the 6 laps they raced. This year the classes with the biggest en-tries were younger and older male groups with Bailey Ford blast-ing out his four laps in 58mins ahead of Dan-iel Reid and Jake Todd in the under 15 group while at the other end of the spectrum Derek

Milne completed his 6 laps 4mins ahead of Doug Sharland in sec-ond with Tim Miller third.Vet 2 was the closest of the day with Jake Stow passing Seamus Ryan on lap 4 managing to hold his lead to the finish.Chris Sharland showed his class by winning senior men on a borrowed last century, fully ridged machine which some-

how stayed in one piece for his 7 laps.Cameron Ford was fastest in the com-petitive under 19 men group while Oliver Miller won the Wom-en’s section.Round 2 of this series will also be held in the Codgers area on Oc-tober 13 and incorpo-rates the South Island Masters Games event. Mountain biking on the rise

Could this be the year? The Tasman Makos have shot to the top of the ITM Cup Championship standings after thrashing former Shield holders Otago 49-16 in a slick all-round performance at Trafalgar Park on Friday night.Behind a dominant forward pack, which caused the Southerners plenty of trouble at lineout and scrum time, the backs were given plenty of freedom to run riot with Tom Marshall leading the charge, and powerful winger James Lowe bagging two tries in the rout.It was the second week in a row that Tasman scored 40 points or more, and on current form, there’s nothing to sug-gest that the team will stop at that, with a number of players already putting their hand up for higher honours – do we need to mention James Lowe again?Former Nelson College flanker, and

Mitchell Scott’s younger brother, Willis Scott made his starting debut for Otago in the loss – a proud night for family and friends with Mitchell coming on to score the final try of the match, already a contender for try of the year. The Makos will travel north to Albany to face a winless North Harbour side this Friday night – a game they should win, before taking on Mike Coman’s Hawke’s Bay in Nelson the following weekend. While all eyes will be on the North Har-bour game this weekend, Tasman fans will also be hoping for a Taranaki win against Ranfurly Shield holders Coun-ties Manakau. If Taranaki wins, and can see off Bay of Plenty in the first chal-lenge, Tasman would get the second challenge – plenty of what ifs, but a real possibility.

Nayland College has proven to be the top basketball school in the South Island after beating Otago Boys High School 68-62 in the AA Zone 4 secondary school final on Saturday night. In front of a raucous crowd at the packed out Nelson College for Girls gym, Nayland's fast paced side took control of the match, leading right through-out to win the title and cement itself as the South Island's top seed for the New Zealand Sec-ondary School Basketball Pre-miership Tournament in four weeks time.Coach Sam Dempster believes the victory puts Nayland in a strong position heading into the national tournament and he's backing the side to go fur-ther than last year's top four finish. "The first thing with this tour-nament is you just want to qualify [for nationals] but when you actually win it, it means a lot, especially in front of our home town. We were second here twice in the last two years so it's good to get a W [win]," says Sam. "Last year we set our-selves up good but this year I feel we're in a better position ahead of nationals."Plenty of Nayland players got significant minutes during the tournament, which was held at a mixture of gymnasiums across Nelson from Wednes-day to Saturday. While regu-lar contributors Angus Riley, Locky Campion and Jonas Kale had strong performances along with new recruit Akira Marsters, Sam acknowledged Nayland had poor shooting stats, and it was something that would be worked on in the coming weeks.

Nayland won't be the only Nel-son team at the national tour-nament, with fourth placed Nelson College also qualifying. The success in the boys draw wasn't mirrored in the girls section though with Waimea College (ninth) being the only local team inside the top ten. Nayland College (12th) and Nelson College for Girls (14th) had to settle for minor placings. As well as hosting the South Island basketball competi-tion, two other major second-ary school competitions were played here during tournament week with the Lotto Premier

Girls New Zealand Secondary School Football Champion-ship and the Marie Fry Hockey Tournament being held at Sax-ton Field. While heavyweights Mt Albert Grammar School took out the football final 1-0 over Rangitoto College, lo-cal schools Nelson College for Girls (10th) and Waimea Col-lege (11th) had very strong tournaments and can hold their heads high. In the hockey, which was won by Westlake Girls High School, Nelson College for Girls finished 12th place and Waimea College fin-ished 15th.

The Dawnbreakers Fishing club held their Open Day on Sunday at their new venue the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, with a fantastic turnout of keen and interested an-glers. There were over 80 members signed up for the new season on the day, with at least 60 per cent of those being new to the club. Being a nice hot sunny day with a BBQ go-ing flat out, new members were able to meet and mingle with previous members to gain an appreciation of what the club is all about.New members had various reasons for joining the club which includ-ed how to fish certain areas, learn new techniques from experienced fisherman to increase their hook up rates, be able to socialise on a regular basis, the use of measuring boards, partake in club fishing out-ings including day trips and week-ends away. Everybody who hadn’t been to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club before were very impressed with the buildings well setup inte-rior, its warm inviting atmosphere, to the decks that look out over the boat ramp and marina. With our club days now being on a Sunday afternoon from 3 till 5pm, there will be no better place to enjoy an afternoon drink and talk about fishing. We already have club trips organ-ised to Okiwi Bay, French Pass, and Havelock along with day trips around the Top of The South. Also on our Club Days we will have guest speakers from the likes of MAF, Niwa, Coastguard, and some of our own club members parting with their vast wealth of informa-tion gained from years of experi-ence on the water. The only catch to enjoying not only the above in-formation and club venue but the up to date fishing reports on when, where and how the fish are biting, is to join the club. With our large number of members

which by opening day will be well over 120 members, we will be able to cover a wide area of the ocean, enabling us to put you on the hot spots quicker than ever. Our season starts on October 1 so there are still a few weeks to get signed up and on our email list.Just to let you all know we have it on good authority that the snapper are on the move and coming our way.Our scouts are now out on a weekly basis following the snapper from D’urville Island to Tasman Bay and will keep us informed. D’urville is still producing some large double digit snapper with slow jigs doing the damage. Delaware and Cable Bay are still the best local spots for picking up gurnard, kahawai and small snapper at the moment and will continue to get better as the water temperature starts to rise. After reading this and you are keen to find out a bit more about the DBFC, check out our website http://www.sportsground.co.nz/dawnbreakersfishingclub/58328/1/ for our latest info and where you will also find an online member-ship form or else our email address is [email protected].

Excuses of rustiness were acceptable on Thurs-day night – the first time table tennis had been played at Saxton Stadium since April’s flood. With the entire stadium out of action, Nelson Table Tennis was forced to relocate matches out to Club Waimea, albeit on a temporary basis. But with the green light given by Nelson City Council to get back in the purpose-built facility, big numbers were drawn back to play again.Association spokesperson Kay Hazeldine says while the offer to use Club Waimea was appreci-ated, it wasn’t an ideal situation, having to juggle their timetable around events being based at the Richmond facility. “We only had eight tables and the lighting was hard. You’d lose sight of the ball. But it was somewhere for us to go,” she explains. “It was terribly frustrating and if there was a fu-neral or something then we had to cancel.”The biggest frustration was the fact just a week prior to the flood Nelson Table Tennis had been involved in an expo promoting the sport at Sax-ton Stadium, and a large number of new players were expected to join. “A lot of people were re-ally keen and showed interest from that but now we’ve lost them. So we’re starting again really.”While Kay admits she initially hoped the re-build wouldn’t take as long as four months, she acknowledges the significance of the damage.

“It was just heartbreaking when we first walked in here. The water was all the way up the walls and they had to be taken out. The floor had to be removed. We lost our computer as well as two fridges in our kitchen area.”But with everything now back to normal for Nelson table tennis players, the weekly schedule has not been changed and Wednesday nights re-main open to the public with families allowed to play for just $10, and Kay says it’s awesome be-ing back. “It’s great to be back. I think a few of us might be a bit rusty, I was anyway,” she laughs.

It was down to the nitty gritty at Sax-ton Courts on Saturday as Nelson Net-ball’s semi finals were played in brilliant overhead conditions. There were some tired bodies given the fact that the lo-cal colleges had competed at the South Island Secondary School Tournament in Christchurch. The season’s results count for nothing as the slate is wiped cleaned and anything can happen in semi-finals netball. The top four qualified for the semis with 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, which in theory should pro-duce the top two teams for the final. In Grade 2 Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro Black went into their semi as odds on favourites to beat Nayland College. Richmond have had a stellar season in Grade 2 and also did well in Grade 1 when they were promoted in the sec-

ond round. However to reach the final you must first win the semi! Nayland re-turned from Christchurch on a real high after winning seven of their eight games to finish third in B Grade. Richmond was depleted by injury while Nayland were on-song to take the game 25-22.Suburban Blue and Stoke Accessman had previously met twice with the spoils being shared at one win apiece. It was evident from the first whistle that both teams were keen to gain a finals berth and there were numerous turnovers through court. While Stoke held a 7-5 advantage at the first break it could have

been far greater given the fact they only converted three of their eight turnovers. The second period was Stoke’s best as they settled down and found their rhythm. Feeders Jaime Kingi and Casey Ballantyne put in a number of sublime feeds and their shooters rewarded them with conversions. Suburban’s circle de-fenders Tania Mangos and Dee Chisnall were a formidable unit as they toiled to foil Stoke’s offence. Shooter Deanna Hunter found her range in the second half to slot some superb long range shots to take the game 37-28.Just shows you, anything goes in semi final netball with third placed Stoke Ac-cessman to take on fourth placed Nay-land College. Stoke have won the previ-ous encounters but once again the slate is wiped clean for the final.

BackgroundFor over 60 years, the Stoke Bowling Club has been without a stormwater

connection to the Nelson City Council’s stormwater network and has had to rely on two sumps and seepage to a gravel un-

derlay. In recent years these sumps had deteriorated and the club was faced with regular flooding of its greens and parking area after any heavy rain. On more than one oc-casion, the Stoke Volunteer Fire Service pumped out floodwater to save a major tour-nament featuring leading New Zea-land players.

Remedy In late 2012, the club commissioned Tasman Con-sulting Engineers Ltd to design a stormwater disposal plan to ameliorate the flooding issue. This involved directing all rain-

water to a central point in the form of a 23,000 litre concrete tank to be buried in a 4 metre deep excavation in the cor-ner of the carpark. When full, the water is chanelled via a porous filled trench, known as a raingarden, for a distance of

some 50 metres to a huge porous filled sump with a capacity of 50 cubic metres. From there, the water percolates through to the gravel substrata.

ContractorsIn January of this year, Dunlea Builders were the preferred tenderer, and had overall responsibil-ity for the completion of

the project . This involved Alpha Concrete, who con-

structed the tank, Annesbrook Plumb-ing, who channelled the rain water from the 55om2 pavilion, and the two greens to the tank, and CJ Contracting, who repaired , levelled, and resealed the car-

park , directing the flow to the raingarden. Electrical work involved wiring to a submersible pump in the tank allowing stored water

to be used for irrigation.

FundingThis was the biggest undertaking faced by the club for many years, but prudent financial management by former and current executives saw a significant in-vestment portfolio being built up. The

cost of the project was around $60,000, and the club is grateful to the Nelson City Council which recognised the leading role the club plays in the sport of bowls in the region, and contributed one third of the project cost.

Construction The major work was completed in July and was a model of precision plan-ning. A mammoth digger excavated the tank and sump cavities and the truck with its protruding concrete tank had only 5mm clearance as it eased down the driveway. This was followed by an

outsize Smiths crane which lifted then lowered the tank into its final resting place. The heavy machinery chewed up the already deteriorating parking area, with the final work being the levelling, sealing, and marking the carpark was completed in the current week.

Stoke Bowling Club ResponsibilityThe club is the only club in the region with two lawns or natural greens which are essential for the hosting of major and national tournaments. As a result, Stoke is the hub of bowls in Nelson which is a responsibility it accepts will-ingly. This comes at a cost as the greens alone amount to some $30,000 annually. The club is self supporting, again as a result of sound financial management, and member support.

Sponsorship Because of the performance of our members at various levels, and the cali-bre of the tournaments that it stages, the club enjoys a high profile, and has a strong relationship with the Stoke and Tahunanui business community who are valued supporters of the club, and

good tournament sponsorship results. A growing number of these sponsors - and other businesses, are making use of the clubs facilities for social bowls, team building, and social functions, and each year the club runs a six week evening business league which attracts some 30 teams of three, who en-joy fun bowls, a BBQ, and socialising.

Coaching & UmpiresThe club has at least six qualified coaches and their expertise extends from be-ginners, or first time bowl-ers, through to higher level tournament play. In addi-tion the club has a similar number of umpires, two of

whom hold International Certification.

AchievementsPast and current members have achieved at the highest level with many nation-al titles attained. Shannon McIloy is currently in Scotland representing NZ as a member of the Black Jacks, and last year Jimmy Pugh represented NZ play-ing against Australia in the under 25 age group. Last season our men’s Sevens’ Team won the national title for the sec-ond time and is one of only two clubs who have achieved this distinction. Also last year, Peter Hodson won the national singles title, and went on to Cyprus to Represent NZ in the Champion of Cham-pions securing a bronze medal.

EquipmentA club member is an agent for Taylor, Aero, Henselite, and Greenmaster bowls, as well as bags, clothing ,and accessories. Second hand bowls are also available.

Opening Day The new season will be formally opened on Saturday September 14, by Mayor Aldo Miccio at 4pm. This will be

followed by refreshments and nibbles. New members are especially welcome, and if they could arrive at 3.30pm at the club at 18a Ranui Rd, it will provide the opportunity to learn more about what the club can offer.

Page 16-17Teens work for smokes

The rising cost of cigarettes won’t deter a group of Nelson students despite many of them working part time jobs to pay for their habit.Nelson Weekly spoke with a

group of teenage smokers who are either at high school or re-cently finished. All were girls and all started when they were still too young to buy tobacco. Most still are too young. They say they “don’t know”

why they smoke but buy their tobacco at Nelson retailers who notoriously don’t ask for ID and if they don’t have enough money to buy a whole pack-et, will go halves with their friends, because they simply can’t go without their daily in-take of nicotine. Some even go to the effort of brushing their teeth to cover any lingering smell on their breath before visiting boyfriends who don’t know about their habit.

One Nelson College for Girls student tampered with her ID to make her age appear over 18 and others get parents, friends or older siblings to buy it or simply visit shops that don’t ask for ID.An announcement by the gov-ernment in last week’s budget that the price of cigarettes is set to rise by ten per cent every year for the next four didn’t even deter them. “I’ll keep smoking, I can’t stop,” says high school student Hannah Flem-ming, 17. The girls paid for their tobacco

by working part time jobs out-side of school time with a cou-ple working full time. Most said their parents were

against their smoking “but couldn’t do anything”. Others admitted smoking at interval and lunchtime while at school and even smoking in their car so they wouldn’t get caught by

Sirens try to smash derby foesThere were thrills and spills as some of the South Island’s feistiest women took to the track in front of a full house for the first ever tri-ple header hosted in Nelson. Though the Sirens fought a good

battle, it was the Dunedin Derby Gallow Lasses that took out the trophy in frong of 2000 people. “It was a little bit disappointing that we didn’t win for our home crowd, but we’re still new,” says Siren Tara

Forde. The three teams that took part would like to see the event become an annual competition. “We’re just really thrilled that it all went so well and the support we got,” says Tara.

Suter upgrade questionedThe idea of building a brand new art gal-lery instead of trying to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been floated this week.Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson says it is worthwhile investigating whether the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be better spent building a brand new facility at Rutherford Park. Discussion opens this week on the long term plan and Paul says he will be asking the Suter if that option has been explored as he thinks it will make much better use of the money. “We spent $3million on the cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6mil-lion at Rutherford Park for an art gal-lery? Sometimes we just need to step out-side that comfort zone that we have built around a project and have a look outside the square.”But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around dou-ble that of the current proposal.“We have a design and a feel for that space that we are happy with and it incorporates the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our own property. That site of the gallery is the longest running public sited gallery in

The Air Nelson hangar is temporar-ily holding what could be the only flying Avro Anson Mk I bomber in existence. After almost a decade of museum life, it was fully restored by Wakefield man Bill Reid and the 1943 aircraft looks set to be flying as early as next weekend. The project has taken Bill ten years to complete. The length of time had to be stretched as a world-wide search for parts took much longer than expected because of its rarity. Bill, along with his wife Ro-byn, travelled to Australia and England on

battle

Natureland is again in for a fight for sur-

vival after the trust that runs the zoo an-

nounced last week that it was pulling the

plug on managing it.

The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City

Council that it was withdrawing from op-

erating the park because of the impact the

Canterbury earthquakes has had on its

own park.

NCC is now waiting on a staff report be-

fore discussing the future of the zoo at a

meeting next Tuesday, June 26.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow

but he understands the situation facing

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”

Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.

“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Hopefully we can find a good long term

Volunteer work

‘best job ever’

SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.

Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society.

“Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young,

Bands set to

battle

Natureland is again in for a fight for sur-

vival after the trust that runs the zoo an-

nounced last week that it was pulling the

plug on managing it.

The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City

Council that it was withdrawing from op-

erating the park because of the impact the

Canterbury earthquakes has had on its

own park.

NCC is now waiting on a staff report be-

fore discussing the future of the zoo at a

meeting next Tuesday, June 26.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow

but he understands the situation facing

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”

Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.

“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Hopefully we can find a good long term

Volunteer work

‘best job ever’

SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.

Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society.

“Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young,

Protecting our waterfrontWorking with our local MP the Hon. Nick

Smith and Transport Minister, the Hon. Gerry Brownlee to secure government funding for

the future Arterial Transport Corridor

Derek Shaw Currently a City councillor, I have 30

years experience in local government. I’m the co-portfolio holder Governance, co-chair of the Framing our Future Committee, and member of the Regional Transport Committee, Joint Shareholders Committee and Regional

Sewerage Business Unit. I’m an accredited resource management commissioner (chair) and an active member of the Biodiversity and Sustainability forums. I’m married with three young adult children and operate a part-time publishing business, Nikau Press. I continue to be actively involved in the community, including being a trustee of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, the Tasman Regional Sports Event Trust, Nelson Environment Centre, as well as participating in athletics as an official and competitor. If re-elected, I’m keen to continue using my experience, knowledge and energies in ensuring Nelson remains a great place to live, with our special heritage, arts, cultural, recreational and environmental features safeguarded, and that we have safe and resilient communities.

Pete Rainey I am a born and bred Nelsonian - Phillipa

and I have two children and I want to make a difference to this region, so our kids can grow up in a safe, happy and prosperous environment. In my six years leading council’s community services portfolio, we have achieved

a lot and have some exciting work ahead to make Nelson an even better place to live. I want to continue to bring a positive, forward thinking, collaborative approach to council. I have co-organised the Smokefreerockquest national music competition for the last 25 years, and was awarded an MNZM in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the NZ music industry. I am artistic director for Nelson Opera in the Park and director of Eventiac, which runs the annual NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow, among other events. I put my time and effort into council because I love Nelson

Kent Robertson Kent Robertson is a name well–known

to Nelsonians. From his 20 years as a local broadcaster and the huge community commitment this involved to his work with both the Nelson Civic and Nelson 2000 Trusts, Kent has proven his ability to bring together

businesses, organisations and skilled individuals to make things happen. The construction of the Sealord Marine Rescue ramp, re-invigoration of Wakefield Quay, and the new Nelson Plunket Rooms are particular project highlights among many. As a husband and father of two, and now working in IT, Kent’s decision to stand for Nelson City Council is based on a determination to work within council to get the best for Nelson. Roads and footpaths make our city work and arts and culture make us sparkle - but there has to be a balance. Kent stands on a policy of affordable progress - value for money rates, and sensible policies that are still future focussed.

Tim Skinner Tim Skinner is a born and bred

Nelsonian with a passion for social justice issues and building a healthy safe community. He has successfully built up a professional photography business over 15 years, and has prior experience studying marketing, finance, science

and technology at Massey University. Prior to his own business, he was involved in a corporate marketing company in Auckland City. Tim has a strong desire to ensure Nelson is an affordable place to live and raise a family. He is married with three young boys aged 1, 8 and 10 years and is a keen footballer. He has many years of voluntary work experience in leadership roles for youth work and sports. Tim thrives on challenges and finding innovative solutions.Tim embraces Nelsons lifestyle and wants to ensure continued economic growth and stability in Nelson for future generations, and is a strong voice for Nelson citizens.

Ruth Copeland It has been an honour to serve as a Nel-

son City Councillor the past 3 years. I have found my voice around the table and have consistently championed eco-nomically focussed, socially progressive, and innovative solutions. We are mak-ing very good progress. I am co portfolio

holder Governance, Deputy of the Regional Transport Commit-tee and sit on the Audit Risk and Finance committee.I remain deeply committed to: • resourcefulness-delivering more with less funding and waste.• looking for new opportunities to grow our economic profile• inspiring the private sector to invest and innovate with

confidence• providing opportunities for our young people• working together better with communities• ensuring housing and rates affordability • addressing natural hazard risks • safeguarding our environment and biodiversity • designing smart, future proof transport systems • appreciating our creative culture, natural assets and the

wonderful people who live here.

Kate FultonI’m a third generation Nelsonian. I attended Nelson College for Girls, completed a BSc(Hons) at University of Canterbury and a PhD in biomedical research at Cambridge University. I have three children and we lived overseas in Cambridge UK, then Melbourne, where

I worked at Monash University, before returning to Nelson in 2009. In 2010, I was elected as a Nelson City Councillor. I co-shared Policy and Planning portfolio and have a strong interest in public health and community well being. I have worked on council’s Vision 2060, its Social Wellbeing Policy and the draft Local Alcohol Policy. My ability to work collegially, whilst retaining integrity, is a strength which will ensure my decision making is efficient and effective, for our communities now and in the future. I have current conflicts of interest with the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB): I am a Nelson City Councillor. To the best of my knowledge and belief, I have no other conflicts of interest with the NMDHB at the date of my notice of consent to being nominated as a candidate for membership of the board of the NMDHB.

Mike Ward I am an athlete, a parent and a self-

employed artist. Since retiring from the classroom and returning to Nelson thirty-five years ago I have completed five terms as a City councillor and one as a Member of Parliament and served on a range of sporting, cultural and

community organisations. I am currently patron of Lifeline Nelson, a JP and co-chair of Council’s Framing our Future committee and co-portfolio holder Policy and Planning. Nelson is a most beautiful and fortunate city and this term’s 2060 process has asked what we must do to make it even more beautiful as well as safer, healthier, fairer, wiser, friendlier and above all sustainable. It has been the most exciting and farsighted initiative during my political career and whether returned to Council or not I am committed to working with this community to flesh out the vision and make it happen.

“Nelson’s first Mayor in 1872 was Joseph Dodson. At that time council priorities were core services. Of course it’s still essential that the council is affordable, operates efficiently, delivers core services, executes legislative requirements, but we also need to provide arts, sports, and cultural infrastructures thus ensuring our city is an attractive vibrant proposition for investment, jobs and families. From 2010 - 2013 the council has made this happen, with your vote we can continue to do so.”

Being warm in our own homes is a basic right that all Nelsonians should have access to, and I’m committed to introducing new and effective policies to make this happen. Vote Miccio this election and help me to help you enjoy safe and affordable heating.
