Angels are spiritual beings created by God to serve and worship Him. Holy angels are faithful to God and carry out His will. The fallen angels disobeyed, fell from their holy position, and now serve Satan and stand in active opposition to the work and plan of God.


The primary word used for these spiritual beings in the Bible is angel. Other terms undoubtedly referring to angels are seraphim (Isa. 6:2), cherubim (Ezek. 10:1-3), Archangel (Jude 1:9) and ministering spirits (Heb 1:13). The Hebrew word for angel is mal`ach, and the Greek word is angelos. Both words mean “messenger.”

The holy angels are also spoken of as “holy ones,” because they were created without sin and chose to be faithful to God. They are “set apart” by God. They are servants and attendants to His holiness.

“Host,” is another term used for angels. This is a military term that carries the idea of warfare. “Host” describes God’s angels as they serve in the army of God engaged in spiritual warfare (Psalm 89:6, 8; 1 Sam. 1:11; 17:45). It pictures angels as a multitude of heavenly beings who surround & serve God – advancing His purposes and desires.

The Bible reveals that angels do exist! There is a class of spiritual beings (not human) that the Bible refers to as angels. The Bible mentions angels 273 times in the Old and New Testaments! They are mentioned in 34 out of 66 books in the Bible -- from Genesis to Revelation! Jesus and the Scriptures clearly affirm their existence!

Jesus said, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Mark 13:32).


The Son of Man (Jesus) will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire (Matt. 13:41-42).

I do not believe because someone told me about a dramatic visitation from an angel, impressive as such rare testimonies may be. You alone are the LORD. You have made heaven. The heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You (Neh. 9:6).

#2 Angels were created by God


In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made (John 1:1-3).



For by Him (Christ) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him (Col. 1:16).



When were angels created?

The exact time of their creation is never stated. Yet, the Book of Job indicates that they were present when the Earth was created. So their creation was prior to the creation of the Earth as described in Genesis chapter one.


“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? … To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7).


Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne …. and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing!” (Rev. 5:11-12).

For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You”? … He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him” (Heb. 1:5-6).

How many angels are there? The Bible doesn’t give a specific number. Some have suggested millions, even billions.

A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him (Dan. 7:10).

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne … and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands (Rev. 5:11).

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels (Heb. 13:2).

#5 Angels are among us!


When the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to Elisha, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So Elisha answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6:15-17).


Angels are not all powerful; not complete in knowledge; and are limited to being in one place at a time (finite). Angels are not eternal, since they had a time in which they were created. Angels are not creators, but rather part of God’s creation. However, angels are very intelligent, emotional, and powerful beings:


• They understand (Matt. 18:10)

• They speak (Luke 1:28)• They respond to commands (Luke 1:26)• They are curious (1 Peter 1:12)• Angels were created as intelligent beings. They’ve been alive prior to the creation of the earth, so they’ve also observed & learned for thousands of years (Job 38:4, 7)

• They praise & worship (Psalm 148:1-5)• They battle (Dan. 10; Rev. 12)• They rejoice

Jesus said, “I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10).

#7 Angels are Emotional Beings


• Angels are described as “strong” and “mighty” (2 Thess. 1:7; Rev. 5:2; 18:21)• Angels are powerful in their numbers (I Kings 22:19; Matt. 26:53; Heb. 12:22) • They “excel in strength” - The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word. Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, you ministers of His, who do His pleasure (Ps. 103:19-21).

#8 Angels are Powerful Beings


One angel destroyed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers all by himself!

It came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians 185,0000; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses -- all dead (2 Kings 19:35).

# 9 Angels do not marry or have offspring

For in the resurrection they (mankind) neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven (Matt. 22:30)


#10 Angels Never Die

Jesus answered, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels … being sons of the resurrection” (Luke 20:34-36).


Angels do not die. They do not marry. They do not have baby angels! They are powerful, intelligent beings who have personalities, names, and will.

“Angels are all ministering spirits sent

forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:14)

The appearance of angels is often majestic, brilliant, awesome

I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire (Rev. 10:1-2).

Despite many of mankind’s artistic renderings, the Bible always refers to

angels in the masculine gender. Additionally, their numerous appearances

to people are always as a male.

The angels’ names in Scripture are always masculine. Can you name them?

Several Bible passages refer to angels having wings. Specifically the cherubim and seraphim. In Isaiah 6:1-7, we see a type of angel called seraphim. This angelic being is described as having six wings, a face, feet, and hands. They have the ability to fly, speak, and can be stationed at God’s throne. This does not mean seraphim always serve in this capacity, but it’s certainly an incredible passage:

… I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar (Isa. 6:1-3, 6).



In Ezekiel chapter one and ten, we are introduced to a type of angel called cherubim. This angelic being is described as having four faces, four wings, and the likeness of hands under their wings. It may be observed that cherubim serve as guards and attendants to God, whereas seraphim attend God’s throne and offer praises to Him.



This is the living creature I saw under the God of Israel … and I knew they were cherubim. Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings. And the likeness of their faces was the same as the faces which I had seen by the River Chebar, their appearance and their persons (Ezek. 10:20-22).



• People do not become angels. Angels do not become human beings!

• People are created in the image of God (animal or angels are not)

• Christ died for people to pay the penalty for our sin (demons are not redeemable!)

• Angels were created to serve God and us!

For now, we are a little lower than the angels in strength and intellect, but we shall rule over and judge them.

Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? … Do you not know that we will judge angels? (I Cor. 6:2-3).

• We are co-heirs with Christ through the redemption of the cross.

• Angels watch humans and long to look into our salvation (I Pet. 3:18)

• Don’t aspire to be an angel, but something greater – a redeemed child of God, restored into a relationship with the God who created you in His image to be co-heirs of Christ!
