NOTE TO AUSTRALIA. From the first moment I met Swamiji, I started to collect and devour these printed works from devotees in many countries. When I offered these 200 or so books to Swamiji, circa 1979, I called them Venkatesa Library and I always hoped they would form the nucleus of a complete works series similar to your wonderful work for Master Sivananda.
A few listings may need correction. For example, is it Bhagavad Gita for Everyday Life or Bhagavad Gita for Daily Life? Are the Baroda editions or Yoga: die Zeitshrift fur Yoga-Synthese und Vedanta really works by Swami Venkatesa?
It is my deepest hope that these books have been properly conserved, protected, and kept intact as a collection. I am sure you have added new books to it as they were published.
I can see the Complete Works of Swami Venkatesananda already in my mind, with volumes on the Bhagavad Gita, Daily Readings, Durga Puja, Yoga Series, Yoga Vasistha, an extensive biography, and others. I want one, don’t you?
This is a difficult goal but, in this small way, those of us who knew Swamiji can make sure his unique teachings are not forgotten.
VENKATESA LIBRARY IN AUSTRALIA
Swami Venkatesananda (1921-1982) was a disciple of Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh in the Indian Himalayas from 1945. The bibliographer was a disciple of Gurudev Venkatesanda from 1975 to the present. Devotion overcomes death. The bibliographer collected these many volumes of yoga teachings, most long out-of-print, from SV’s devotees in many countries. They were offered to the guru in Tsawassen BC Canada. Swamiji prepared the books and shipped them for safekeeping and reprinting to Swami Lakshmi Ananda at Beacon Yoga Centre in South Fremantle, Western Australia. Dear reader,
Please note that the great majority of these books were not written by Swami Venkatesananda. Thus, this effort might be considered an unofficial bibliography.
The master, Swami Sivananda, mostly wrote and printed his essential teachings from his ashram in Rishikesh. In contrast, Swami Venkatesananda constantly traveled the world, lecturing to small groups of seekers and never established a permanent base.
Swamiji’s lectures were best appreciated in person. The cadence and lilt, diction and tone of his voice, his posture, gestures, and facial expressions all contributed to the deeper meaning of his words. Unfortunately, Swamiji died in 1982 in Johannesburg so we no longer have that privilege.
However, Swamiji’s friends always recorded his talks and some of that audio, at least, is preserved on the Web. To really understand Swamiji’s teachings, that’s iwhere the seeker should start. The editing and transcriptions of these audiotapes which resulted in most of these books was done by amateurs whose listening and understanding skills may have been imperfect.
However, these small print runs of Swamiji’s printed lectures were offered to him with deep love and devotion. For all their imperfections, this is why they should be honoured.
These little books provide academics, historians, and, yes, seekers, too, with a record of the spread of Swamiji’s teachings and a clue to the worldwide Sivananda yoga diaspora.
Books can never replace the guru, but they can be second best.
