• Practice listening to people in this same way:
Attentively enough that you could explain it to someone else
Try reflecting back to the person what you understood
So you’re saying that….You mean…Do I have this right? ….

• As you read:• Ask yourself: What is this sentence doing?
Stating a thesis? Setting the stage? Providing an
example? Presenting an opposing point?....
• Outline it in the margin
• Circle all of the links between ideas
• Highlight all of the words that convey an opinion,
point of view, or tone

vocabulary, then look it up
