Getting flu vaccine is your best defense, but you may also use the following 10 tips to fight the flu this year:
1. Wash your hands frequently, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, being with ill people and especially before you eat
2. Avoid sharing objects
3. Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes
4. Get enough sleep and avoid getting “rundown”
5. Reduce stress
6. Use tissues for coughs and sneezes and dispose of them immediately and appropriately
7. Eat right and get regular exercise
8. Avoid crowds and keep your distance from people whom you know are ill
9. If you are sick, avoid contact with the frail, very young and elderly
10. If you are sick, stay home from work or school

Guess that State Park
Addy the dog is one of the favorite dogs in our community. Addy was born in Hastings, MI and now resides with Leonard and Peggy at Gable Pines. Addy is a 13 year old Yorkie.
She sports some of the most fashionable attire when heading
outside in the brisk Minnesota weather. Addy is groomed every 3 months to maintain a super sweet appearance. She enjoys her special dog treats and is always willing to greet you! We welcome Addy and her parents to Gable Pines.
My name is Luke. I am a junior at White Bear High School where I am in the Mariners Choir. I love to watch football and also play basketball. My family and I have resided in White Bear Lake, and I have one younger sister named Lauren.
My favorite thing about working at Gable Pines is the good food, the great staff, and the most pleasant of residents! I look forward to coming to work each day to meet all of the new residents and their families!
Use the facts below and the photos to the right to guess which state park these are from:
• The 2,700 acre park is an angler’s paradise with brown, brook, and rainbow trout swimming in the spring-fed Whitewater River and Trout Run Creek.
• Dakota Indians named the river Whitewater because it turned milky white in the spring as high water eroded light-colored clay deposits along its banks.
• Of Minnesota’s rare animals and plants, 43 percent live in the Blufflands.
Write down your answer and return it to Amber in Life Enrichment (2nd floor hobby room). If you would like to share a favorite memory from this park, we would love to hear it! You will be entered in a drawing to win a special treat!

Embrace the World Recipe:ShortbreadFrom the Embrace the World Ireland recipe book
• 4 oz unsalted butter, softened
• 1/3 C white sugar
• 1 C all purpose flour
• 1/4 C cornflour (not cornmeal)
• 1/2 tsp Kosher salt
Preheat oven to 350F.
In a mixer with a paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and very fluffy, about 5 minutes. Sift together the flour, cornflour and salt. Add little by little to the butter mixture until just combined into a dough.
On a lightly floured surface, dump out the dough and knead a few times until a firm ball forms. Sprinkle with flour and roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick.
Dust the top of the dough with flour, add a piece of thick lace, and gently roll over the lace or a doily, making an impression into the dough. Remove the lace and cut the dough into squares or into rounds.
Add onto a baking sheet lined with parchment and bake for 15 minutes or until barely golden brown.
