A MESSAGE FROM DEAR FRIENDS...Lucky Dog Animal Rescue celebrated a huge milestone in 2019: our tenth anniversary. It’s been quite an amazing ride when you think about it. In May of 2009, a small group of volunteers sat together with an idea to start an animal rescue with a fresh perspective on helping people find pets. Ten years later, more than 15,500 animals have been saved from certain euthanasia and placed with loving forever families. More than 15,500 lives have been forever changed because of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

Ten years ago, Lucky Dog had no staff. My basement was our office. My tahoe was our van. I would come home from my day job to donations stacked outside my garage door. I would sneak puppies into work when we didn’t have enough fosters to take them.

Times have certainly changed. Lucky Dog now has seven full time staff, a formal office, and three vans - two of which are located with our team in South Carolina for transport purposes. We have over 1,000 active volunteers and more than 200 fosters. And, most importantly, we have an undiminished commitment to saving the lives of animals in need.

2019 was more than just a year of celebration. It was a year of firsts as well. In 2019, we began a partnership with the Crumbs & Whiskers Kitten Lounge in Washington DC, more than tripling our our capacity to save cats and kittens.

We also began a partnership with the Lazin Foundation to save heartworm positive dogs. The Lazin Foundation provided an incredible grant to not only fund the treatment of heartworm positive dogs but to also purchase a transport van to get them safely to and from the vet.

In 2019, Lucky Dog renewed its commitment to saving senior dogs and received a grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization to support this special lifesaving work. Senior animals are often overlooked in shelters; passed on because they may not be as energetic or have as long of a life expectancy. Yet, Lucky Dog knows that these dogs deserve just as much of a chance as any other animal we find in need of a home. Perhaps they deserve it even more.

I’m so incredibly proud of all that Lucky Dog has achieved in our first ten years. But, I’m even prouder of the fact that we are never satisfied. We are always looking to grow, to improve, to help even more dogs and cats. And, that we can only do because of our amazing supporters. People like you.

I can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring!

NEW PARTNERSIn 2019, Lucky Dog launched a new partnership with the Crumbs & Whiskers Kitten Lounge in Washington DC. Visitors spend time with up to 30 Lucky Kittens looking for homes throughout the day, six days a week. This partnership not only allows Lucky Dog to save many more lives than before, it also but also expands our reach to hundreds of new supporters each week.

2019 AT A GLANCEWhat a year 2019 was! This year, Lucky Dog celebrated our 10th anniversary and crossed the milestone of saving more than 15,500 lives since our founding. We launched new partnerships with organizations like the Lazin Foundation, the Pedigree Foundation, and the Grey Muzzle Organization, and we strengthened our commitment to our shelter partners in Florence, South Carolina; Puerto Rico and beyond. We hosted four incredible events over the course of 2019 to celebrate these truly remarkable lifesaving accomplishments, including a special 10th anniversary Second Chance Soiree and an off-leash dog park BBQ for all of our Lucky Dog family. Our Air BNB dog walks on the mall received national attention, and our special brand of “pup parties” have become THE workplace thing to do in the DC area. We onboarded new dog boarding partners; we began a critical lifesaving partnership with Crumbs and Whiskers Kitten Lounge in Georgetown; and, through it all, Lucky Dog saved the lives of 1,738 Dogs & Cats.

FOSTER PROGRAMBecause we do not have a kennel, Lucky Dog is dependent on volunteers in the DC metro area to house and care for our dogs and cats. These foster homes are the backbone of our organization. Fosters are screened by a specially trained foster screening team using a similar process to the adopter screening process. Fosters are required to attend a 2-hour training class and two Sunday adoption events each month.

KID’S CLUB AND AMBASSADOR’S CLUBLucky Dog’s Kid’s Club offers opportunities for children and teens to become involved in Lucky Dog’s programs and learn about animal nutrition, health and safety. The Kid’s Club meets monthly with special guests and adoptable dogs. The Ambassador’s Club is for high school students and provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for that age group, including internships.

ADOPTION MATCHMAKINGVolunteer Adoption Coordinators work with individual adopters to find the right animal for their family, lifestyle and preferences. This provides a more successful outcome for the dog. This innovative program was pioneered by Lucky Dog.

OUR PROGRAMSADOPTION PROGRAMLucky Dog’s primary purpose is to find qualified adoptive homes for the homeless and abandoned dogs and cats we rescue. We train adoption coordinators to carefully screen adoptive applicants to be sure that our dogs do not end up back in shelters – or worse. The adoption process includes the completion of an application, an in-depth interview with an adoption coordinator, a landlord check (if applicable), a vet check to ensure all current and previous pets were spayed/ neutered and well cared for (if applicable), and a home visit. We also provide support to adopters after adoption takes place.

BY LIZ JOYCEMy love affair with Lucky Dog started about 8 years ago when I happened upon a small adoption event in Shirlington, VA. A friend of mine and I were heading out to brunch when we saw a group of pups that I could not pass by without a quick hello. One of them happened to be this giant black and white puppy with mange on his face that was probably the cutest thing that I have ever seen. I just had to have him. Right there, I applied (without my husband’s knowledge) for him and started our family on the process of getting our first Lucky Dog. It turned out to be the best thing I have ever done.

I call Leo (now my 90 pound, still giant, black and white dog) my gateway dog.

Once I adopted him, there was no going back. I wanted to help others give dogs like Leo homes. I started my Lucky Dog volunteering career as an event volunteer, driving and handling dogs at the weekend events, then transitioned to an adoption coor-dinator, expanded to event coordinator, foster, pre-approval coordinator, and finally returns coordinator. I’m not sure if there are many volunteer roles at Lucky Dog that I haven’t done! Oh – I’m also an adopter now three times over.

One of my more challenging – and most rewarding – times was with the last of my fosters (also my foster failure) Cindy. Cindy came from San Antonio following the Houston Hurricane. We committed to fostering, noting that she was “shy but warms up quickly.” Shy, yes, warms up quickly, no. Not only was Cindy a nervous nelly but she also didn’t know how to walk on a leash, didn’t like men (sorry, husband), wasn’t sure of kids and barked like beagle mixes do. None the less, we went to adoption event after adoption event. Eventually realizing that she was just better off with me at the adoption table, then realizing she was just better off with me. It took about 18 months of fostering to fail – but fail I did. Honestly, I think Cindy adopted me way before I adopted her… it just took me longer to figure it out.

LOVE AFFAIR

Over my time with Lucky Dog, I’ve gotten to go to South Carolina to visit our partners there, to learn more about the shelters that our rescues come from, to Puerto Rico to visit the Pet Village and other fosters around the island. I was on the rescue trip after Hurricane Maria and went to Nashville to promote our Hurricane dogs. I’ve spent hundreds of hours coordinating events, talking with stressed out adopters, and helping

excited adopters find their forever dogs. All with the goal of saving those that can’t help themselves – the dogs and cats of Lucky Dog.

People ask me why I volunteer, why I donate time and money to Lucky Dog - and the reality is that Lucky Dog gave me more than I can ever give back.

My second - Carly “the cutest girl” Rae

A little more than 8 years ago, I heard Mirah Horowitz, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue’s founder, and leader, speak at a national animal welfare conference. I was in awe of Lucky Dog’s accomplishments, their amazing volunteer program, and the extraordinary number of adoptions they had achieved. After her lecture, I jumped from my seat and just said – “That’s what we want for our island!” Within a few months, she came to Puerto Rico to share her experience of running a rescue group with a large group of local rescuers, but little did we know that was just the beginning of the story.

Along with my partners Ursula, Mariangie, Beto, and Vivian, I lead PR Animals, a small rescue group in Puerto Rico founded 10 years ago. We focus on Community Outreach, Spay and Neuter Programs, Rescue and Rehabilitation of satos (our name for mixed-breed street dogs), and our proudest achievement, The Pet Village, a small sanctuary where we get to rehabilitate our dogs and cats in a healthy environment.

Since our partnership with Lucky Dog began, we have shared thousands of happy endings for dogs and cats that had previously been wandering the streets of Puerto Rico with little hope for adoption. Our partnership is a beacon of light in an often-dark road. Lucky Dog’s support allows us to rescue many more animals because we know they will find a home. Transporting rescued animals from Puerto Rico is a long road, and Lucky Dog has always supported and encouraged the best and safest trans-port options for our rescued animals. This type of commitment is priceless. Rescuers still cry tears of joy every time Lucky Dog confirms a transport, fulfilling the promise of a better life we made to that animal. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has helped us fulfill thousands of those promises.

These past few years have been challenging for our island -- Hit by two hurricanes back to back in 2017, and then a cluster of earthquakes in 2019 has made rescue efforts even harder. After Hurricane Maria, everyone needed

BY MICHELLE CINTRONEVERY RESCUE IS A PROMISE

help as resources on the island became scarce quickly. It’s hard to explain what we went through or how hard it was to find the minimum essentials for pets and people. Thankfully, Lucky Dog went above and beyond, launching extraordinary relief efforts.

Never in our wildest dreams did we envision receiving planes full of supplies that left full of rescued dogs and cats. Over four months, Lucky Dog sent more than 30,000 pounds of supplies, both

for pets and humans, these items became our lifeline, improving the lives of independent rescuers and our community of pet owners by supplying them with food crates, water, and many other essentials.

After the 2019 earthquakes, Lucky Dog partnered with PR Animals once again to support a free vaccination clinic, we were able to vaccinate more than 600 dogs and cats, supply them with supplies essential to keeping pets safe and healthy during the emergency. As if all these efforts weren’t enough, Lucky Dog coordinates Volunteer Missions yearly to PR. Receiving the group of volunteers that care for our dogs as fosters, adoption coordinators, and adopters is one of the most exciting parts of our year. We get to connect with the people who help us fulfill the promises, and that connection is cherished by each member of our group – and the rescued pets love them too! When dogs and cats live on the streets, life is hard and hopeless, we work to rescue them from these circumstances and bring hope, health, and happiness to their lives.

True happiness, however, comes when they have adopted thanks to the efforts of the Lucky Dog Team. When a rescued pet is adopted, when they finally find their human (or humans) – that’s when the promise is truly fulfilled -- it is then that we exhale, wipe our tears of happiness, and go out to find more dogs and cats to rescue, all the while knowing that Lucky Dog will be by our side mak-ing sure we continue fulfilling promises.

Each year more than one thousand volunteers keep Lucky Dog moving forward and saving lives. Whether handling an animal at an adoption event, entering data, answering voicemails, updating our website, driving animals to adoption events, helping with transports, conducting home visits, assisting with special events, or answering the myriad of calls to action we have each week, every volunteer is essential. Lucky Dog would not survive without them. Would not save almost 2,000 animals each year without them.

WE ARE FOSTER BASEDThe number of dogs and cats we save every year is directly dependent on our Foster Team. Not only do fosters welcome our dogs and cats into their homes, but they play critical roles at adoption events and as ambassadors on behalf of our animals. It takes a lot of people to keep our foster team running! Foster Screeners onboard new fosters. Overnight Fosters provide care for the night a dog arrives off transport. Puppy and Kitten Fosters provide specialized care to the most vulnerable of our animals. And, Full Time fosters give our dogs and cats a place to live until they are adopted. Each part of the foster team plays a critical role in Lucky Dog’s life-saving work. We know that fostering is not always easy, and we know how much of our foster team puts into their work. We can’t thank them enough!

ADOPTION EVENTS ARE WHERE IT’S ATEach week Lucky Dog hosts multiple adoption events across the DMV to provide adopters with opportunities to meet multiple dogs and cats. Each animal is assigned a volunteer at the event. Volunteer Liaisons make sure everyone is trained and has a great experience. Event Support Volunteers assist adopters with the adoption process. Puppy Protectors keep our puppies safe. And, all of these moving parts are coordinated by extremely talented and hard working Event Coordinators. The hard work and dedication of our adoption event volunteers make it possible for hundreds of dogs and cats to be adopted at our adoption events each year. They make Lucky Dog function!

ADOPTION COORDINATORS ADVOCATE FOR OUR ANIMALSLucky Dog’s Adoption Coordinators are our animals’ strongest advocates, from posting the dogs and cats online, to screening potential adopters, to completing adoption paperwork and giving support once our animals find their forever homes. The amount of time and effort they put into every part of the adoption process is truly amazing. We would never be able to place our Lucky Dogs and Cats in forever homes without their dedication and hard work. We are lucky to have our Adoption Coordinators as part of our Lucky Dog family.

ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEER: LESS SEXY BUT SO IMPORTANTThe behind the scenes work keeping Lucky Dog running can be overwhelming for our small but mighty staff. But our administrative volunteers make it possible! From data entry to adoption folder making to helping check voicemails to doing outreach as part of our development team, our administrative volunteers take on roles that don’t bring them in contact with the animals. Don’t give them the immediate feel good moment of a puppy’s kiss or a kitten’s purr. But, they keep the organization running and make it possible for us to save lives. We are exceptionally grateful.

TO OUR SHELTER AND RESCUE PARTNERSOur amazing rescue and shelter partners do all they can for the animals in their care. They work hard to ensure each animal that transports to Lucky Dog is as healthy as possible. The tireless efforts of our partners at Florence County Environmental Service, Gloucester Matthews Humane Society, PR Animals, Paws of Hertford County, Martinsville Henry County SPCA, and the Kauai Humane Society make it possible for us to rescue so many wonderful animals. We are also incredibly grateful for all that our Lucky Dog - Team South Carolina does for the dogs and cats of Florence County. We appreciate everything that they do to ensure those who enter their shelters become Lucky Dogs and Cats!

In 2016, my family and I moved to the United States, but something was missing in our new home. Cats. One of my friends told me about this great organization, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, where she recently had adopted her dog, Batman, and was able to learn tons of information about his personality from the foster. It was a match made in heaven. The foster program immediate-ly intrigued me, as I could truly get to know these animals to help them find their best forever homes! I went home, looked up Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, and was thrilled to find out that they also had a cat program. I immediately filled out a foster application. Fast forward a few weeks - and I was bringing my first little foster “Ark” home with us. He was such a joy, and that experience made it very clear that we would never stop fostering.

We started off slowly, with just 1 cat, then bonded pairs, and soon enough we were fostering entire litters. My whole family was involved and it was a great experience to share together. The kids played and fed the cats, my husband picked up cats from transport, and I brought them to the events. Fostering became a huge part of our life and always took priority when scheduling plans for the week.

People always ask me “How can you just let them go? Don’t you want to keep them?” Without a doubt, I develop bonds with these cats, especially when fostering a cat for a longer period of time, it’s almost heartbreaking. But I always keep in mind that there are so many kittens and cats left in the different shelters that are also waiting for their freedom ride. By continuing to foster, I can continue the cycle of saving lives and helping people find their dream cats. I’m able to take in cats that are sick or need treatment, as they all need happy forever homes too!

After fostering for about a year, I felt compelled to do more. My kids were becoming teenagers, and my family had settled in the States. I had so much more free time and wanted to get more involved, to help save more lives. Lucky Dog’s cat team lead thought I’d be a great fit as an adoption coordinator. She trained me, mentored me, and shared a lot of invaluable experiences with me. The cat program was growing and very much in need of more cat adoption coordinators and volunteers in general. I loved it from the start. Suddenly, I was able to actively help cats find their forever homes, and help individuals through the process to find their perfect match. As an added bonus, I got to see firsthand the adorable pictures adopters sent in after our follow-ups. I would even go so far as to say that Mondays have become one of my

favorite days of the week, as all the adoption coordinators start sending around the cutest pictures they received from their adopters!

Last October, Lucky Dog partnered with the Crumbs & Whiskers Kitten Lounge in Georgetown. In essence, they are a full-time foster for kittens, and individuals can make appointments to meet and play with them, with the intention to adopt or just to play! This partnership has allowed Lucky Dog to save many more kittens, as the Kitten Lounge fosters about 20-25 kittens at any given time. It has been amazing to watch the number of adoptions and saved lives soar, but suddenly, we have so many more cats with the same number of team members.

I recently moved into the role of cat team lead and now see it as my first priority to grow this team of dedicated, compassionate, and supportive adoption coordinators. We hope to keep growing and rescue more and more cats, but need more help, resources, and manpower to achieve this!

While brainstorming how to expand the cat team, I’ll have to take a little break to prepare for Turk, Zara, Starla and Jake. They’re scheduled to arrive tomorrow, and my whole family is so excited and looking forward to welcoming our new foster cats!

Lucky Dog woud not exist today without our incredible donors. 1,800 dogs and cats would not be in loving families without their support. Monthly donors provide critical life-saving funds that we can rely on each and every month, supporting every facet of our resuces. Our Legacy donors provide funds for larger scale impact, and our everyday campaign donors allow us to target immediate and critical needs. Donors who make increased donations throughout the year create opportunities for future growth. Every donation is important; each is mission- critical. We are grateful to all of our donors and supporters – saving nearly 1,800 lives, providing necessary medical care would not have been possible without the support of each of our 2019 donors. 100% of donations received go directly to the animals’ rescue, transport, and the medical care of our Lucky Dogs and Cats.
