THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine some-body coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures to-day give us our answers. We hope because Christ suf-fered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us al-ways. Jesus promises his disciples that he will send them anoth-er advocate, the Spirit of truth.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel is a continuation of last week’s Gospel:

Jesus is speaking to his disciples at the Last Supper. In today’s

reading Jesus offers encouragement to his disciples, who will soon

see him crucified. He reassures them that even though he will leave

them, he will not abandon them. Instead he will send them the Advo-cate, the Holy Spirit, through whom the disciples will continue to live

in union with Jesus.

Jesus uses the term Advocate to describe the Holy Spirit,

whom the disciples will receive. Another word used to describe the

Holy Spirit is Paraclete, a legal term meaning “one who offers de-

fense for another.” Note that Jesus says that he will send “another Advocate.” Jesus himself is the first advocate, interceding for his

disciples with the Father.

In today’s reading Jesus contrasts his impending depar-

ture with the permanence of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will

leave to return to the Father, but the Holy Spirit will remain with the

disciples. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples will come

to know and appreciate the unity of the Son and the Father. They

will also understand that they too participate in the communion be-

tween the Father and the Son: “On that day you will realize that I am

in my Father and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

Today’s reading is one example of the contrast that John’s Gospel presents between the community of disciples, to whom God

will reveal himself, and the unbelieving world, which will remain in

darkness. The unbelieving world cannot accept the “Spirit of truth,”

whom the disciples will receive. Only through the Spirit will God’s

revelation and love be known.

Saint Rita of Cascia Feast day May 22

Blessed by God, you were a light in darkness through your steadfast courage when you had to suffer such agony upon your cross. You turned aside from this vale of tears to seek wholeness for your hidden wounds in the great passion of Christ. . . . You were not content with less than perfect healing, and so endured the thorn for fifteen years before you entered into the joy of your Lord. This poem was engraved on the casket of St. Rita of Cascia and is one of the few contemporary sources that tell us about her. St. Rita received her “hidden wounds” in an unfortu-nate marriage. For eighteen years she endured the abuses and infidelities of a violent husband. She also suffered the rascality of two sons who were strongly influenced by him. She was delivered from these miserable circumstances in a horrific way: one day her husband was brought home dead, brutally slashed by his enemies. Her rambunctious sons planned to get revenge, but died before they could obtain it. Rita was then free to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nun. She applied to enter the Augustinian convent at Cascia of Italy, in 1407. But her suffering was not over. Even though orders customarily received widows, the Augus-tinians three times refused Rita because she had been married. Only after six years did they acquiesce and install her as a nun. The poem said Rita “sought wholeness” in the passion of Christ. In her meditations she preoccupied her imagination with his agony. On Good Friday, 1441, she prostrated herself before a crucifix and begged Christ for some small share of his suffering. As though punctured by a crown of thorns, a single wound opened on Rita’s forehead. For fifteen years it caused her daily pain and embarrassed her, as its putrid odor frequent-ly offended her sisters. In 1450, when she was preparing to visit Rome for the jubilee year, the wound temporarily healed. But it reappeared when she returned to Cascia and remained until her death. Rita died of tuberculosis on May 22, 1457. Three days later, Domenico Angeli, a notary of Cascia, recorded eleven miracles that occurred upon the saint’s death. He left us this brief profile of her religious life: A very honorable nun, Lady Rita, having spent forty years as a nun in the cloister of the Church of Saint Mary Mag-dalene of Cascia by living with charity in the service of God, followed the destiny of every human being. God, in whose service she persevered for the aforementioned time—desiring to show all the faithful a model of life, so that as she had lived serving God with love by fasting and prayer, they too, all faith-ful Christians, would live also—worked many wonderful mira-cles and through the merits of Saint Rita, especially on 25 May 1457. At every stage of her life, Rita seems to have bravely endured unendurable circumstances: frustration because her parents overrode her wish to become a nun; married an abuser; refused three times by the Augustinians; afflicted with the pain and embarrassment of the stigmata. None of these things, how-ever, prevented her from serving God and her sisters. We can pray for her intercession in our desperate need, but we should also imitate her love in action. from Voices of the Saints, by Bert Ghezzi

En aquel tiem-po, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Si me aman, cumplirán mis mandamientos; yo le rogaré al Padre y él les

dará otro Paráclito para que esté siempre con ustedes, el Espíritu de la verdad. El mundo no puede recibirlo, porque no lo ve ni lo conoce; ustedes, en cambio, sí lo conocen, porque habita entre ustedes y estará en ustedes. No los dejaré desamparados, sino que volveré a ustedes. Dentro de poco, el mundo no me verá más, pero ustedes sí me verán, porque yo permanezco vivo y ustedes también vivirán. En aquel día entenderán que yo estoy en mi Padre, ustedes en mí y yo en uste-des. El que acepta mis mandamientos y los cum-ple, ése me ama. Al que me ama a mí, lo amará mi Padre, yo también lo amaré y me manifestaré a él”.

Santa Rita de Cascia 22 de mayo

Nacida en Rocca Porena en la Diócesis de Espoleto en 1386. Murió en el convento Agustino de Cascia en 1456. Su festividad es el 22 de Mayo. Representada sosteniendo rosas e higos y algunas veces con un manto cubriéndole la frente. De acuer-do con “La Vida” (acta SS., Mayo, V, 224) escrita en el tiempo de su beatificación por el Agustino, Jacobo Carelicci, basado en otras dos biografías más antiguas, fue hija de padres que tenían relativamente avanzada edad y que se distinguieron por su caridad, lo que les valió el mérito de tener el sobrenombre de “Pacificadores de Jesucristo”. El gran deseo de Rita fue llegar a ser monja, pero por mantener obediencia a la voluntad de sus padres, se casó a los 12 años con un hombre extre-madamente cruel y de mal temperamento.Durante 18 años fue modelo como esposa y madre. Cuando su esposo fue asesinado, ella trató en vano de disuadir a sus dos hijos mellizos de tomar venganza. Imploró al cielo para prevenir un crimen y ellos fueron tomados en muerte para reconciliarse con Dios. Ella aplicó para ser admitida en el convento Agustino de Cascia pero siendo viuda su solicitud fue rechazada. Luego de continuos intentos, tal y como se relata y por la intervención divina, obtuvo la admisión, recibió los hábitos de la orden y desar-rollo su profesión.Como religiosa fue ejemplo para todos en términos de sus mortificaciones y es muy

Sexto Domingo de Pascua FORTALECIDOS PARA VIVIR COMO EL MISMO CRISTO Podemos ver el mundo alrededor de nosotros y concluir que este es el tiempo más desafiante en la historia para vivir como una persona de fe. Pero sabemos que no es así. A través de los tiempos, las personas de fe han enfren-tado la burla, la persecución e incluso la muerte como resul-tado de su compromiso con Cristo. Aún así, es importante que reconozcamos el desafío de vivir hoy como cristianos, cuando la fe es vista con ambivalencia en el mejor de los casos y a menudo con antagonismo. Algunos no entienden como la fe y la razón pueden coexistir, aunque muchos de los grandes descubrimientos científicos fueron hechos por personas de fe. Otros ven las fallas de la Iglesia y de sus líderes y descartan la fe como resultado. Confiamos en la presencia poderosa del Espíritu Santo para que esté con nosotros cuando se burlen o simplemente malinterpreten nuestra fe en Jesucristo. Por medio del Espíritu Santo, en-contraremos la gracia para vivir con convicción como pue-blo cristiano. LA RAZÓN DE NUESTRA ESPERANZA San Pedro nos exhorta a que “siempre estemos lis-tos a dar razones de nuestra esperanza a quien nos la pida”. Uno de los grandes dones de la fe en nuestras vidas es nues-tra esperanza en Jesucristo. Por medio de Cristo, ponemos nuestros ojos en una visión más amplia de la vida aquí en la tierra y en la vida eterna con Dios. Sabemos que las pruebas y los desafíos de hoy no tienen la última palabra, y no tiene poder sobre nosotros. Con la presencia del Espíritu Santo, tenemos la ayuda que necesitamos para vivir de acuerdo a la voluntad de Dios, como el quiere y desea, para que el mundo pueda conocer a Cristo por medio del testimonio de nuestras vidas. Esta es una forma de vida con significado y llena de esperanza. Cuando gran parte de la cultura alrede-dor nuestro habla de las distracciones momentáneas e im-permanentes, tenemos la esperanza del significado y propó-sito de hoy y la promesa de la vida eterna por venir. Ojcze nasz, pełni ufności prosimy Ciebie, aby koronawirus z Wuhan nie siał więcej zniszczeń i aby udało się jak najszybciej opanować epidemię. Prosimy, abyś przywrócił zdrowie zakażonym i pokój miejscom, do których koronawirus już dotarł. Przyjmij tych, którzy zmarli na skutek tej choroby, pociesz ich rodziny. Wspieraj i chroń personel medyczny zwalczający wirus, inspiruj i błogosław tym, którzy starają się opanować sytuację. Panie Jezu, lekarzu naszych dusz i ciał. czujemy się bezradni w tej sytuacji ogólnoświatowego zagrożenia, ale ufamy Tobie, udziel nam pokoju i zdrowia. Matko Boża, chroń nas i opiekuj się nami, prowadź nas w miłości do Twojego Syna, Jezusa. Amen

W tradycji polskiej miesiąc maj jest poświęcony Najświętszej Maryi Pannie. W tym miesiącu składamy hołd Bożej Rodzicielce odmawiając litanię loretańską do Matki Bożej jak też rozważając tajemnice różańca świętego. Zwróćmy uwagę by w tym miesiącu czy to w sposób prywatny czy też przez udział w nabożeństwie w kościele tej

pięknej tradycji stało się zadość i abyśmy potrafili żyć tak jak żyła Maryja Matka Chrystusa.

Wniebowstąpienie Pańskie

Wniebowstąpienie Pańskie to chrześcijańskie święto upamiętniające wstąpienie do nieba zmartwychwstałego Jezusa Chrystusa w 40. dniu od zmartwychwstania. Po swoim zmartwychwstaniu Jezus przebywał wśród uczniów, po czym Apostołowie udali się na Górę Oliwną, gdzie w ich obecności Jezus uniósł się w górę i zniknął.
