100 th Anniversary of Apparitions Our Lady of Fatima The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 6 times to three shepherd children; Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta; between May 13 and October 13, 1917. She came to the little village of Fatima which had remained faithful to the Catholic Church during the recent persecutions by the government. Our Lady came with a message from God to every man, woman, and child of our century. Our Lady of Fatima promised that the whole world would be in peace, and that many souls would go to Heaven if her requests were listened to and obeyed. She told us that war is a punishment for sin; that God would punish the world for its sins in our time by means of war, hunger, persecution of the Church and persecution of the Holy Father, the Pope, unless we listened to and obeyed the command of God. As a great sign of the whole message truly coming from God, a marvelous miracle was worked in the sky above Fatima before 70,000 witnesses on October 13, 1917 at the time, date and place that Lucy and the other two children had prophesized in the name of Our Lady of Fatima. The children were told by Our Lady that God would perform a miracle so that people would believe in the apparitions. The miracle occurred with the sun. All could stare perfectly at the sun without blinking, or even hurting their eyes. While all were watching the sun, it rotated, got large and small, got close to the people, and got far away from them. The sun " danced ". Every single person who was there testified to seeing the sun dance, even non-believers who immediately dropped onto their knees and begged for forgiveness. Our Lady of Fatima revealed three prophetic “secrets,” the first two of which were revealed earlier and refer to the vision of hell and the souls languishing there, the request for an ardent devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finally the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism. The third “secret” was not revealed until the year 2000, and referred to the persecutions that humanity would undergo in the last century: “The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated'”. The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been interpreted to include the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13, the 64th anniversary of the apparitions. The Holy Father attributed his escape from certain death to the intervention of Our Lady: “... it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path and in his throes the Pope halted at the threshold of death.” The message is an anguished appeal of our Heavenly Mother, who sees us in great danger and who comes to offer Her help and advice. On May 20 th Our Lady of Fatima will be honored at St. Joseph’s Parish beginning with the Rosary (3 pm), Procession and Mass concluding with a reception in the Hall. Everyone is invited! A Mother’s Day Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your special gift of mothers and for the example of Your unconditional love they share with their children. Lord, today we pray You will protect and guide mothers everywhere… That You will grant them Your wisdom in loving and teaching their children. Today, may children everywhere remember the warm caresses and whispers in the night… The tears dried, the band-aids, the hugs, kisses, and the laughter. Thank you for the mothers who Played with us … Taught us Nurtured us Listened to us Tried to understand us And who Prayed for us. Today, may we remember Mom’s beauty when we were young and her loveliness discovered as we aged. Lord, Today draw especially close to mothers who are alone, for whatever reason, and grant them Your Comfort Your Pleasure Your Peace. And for children who are alone, because of distance, death, or indifference may good memories flood their minds. And if they are not good memories, may forgiveness burst forth from their hearts and revive in them long lost joy. Lord, thank you particularly for phone calls today, and for a shared “I Love You”. Today as we honour, celebrate or simply reflect on the woman who raised us we thank You, Lord, for Life and for Mom! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. We hope the ladies of St. Joseph’s enjoy the flowers which the parish presented to you at the end of Mass today! Please remember to say a special prayer for those mothers who have left this world to be with our Lord and Savior.
