1920 The 1920’s saw a rise in the popularity of Jazz and the Charleston, which was a popular dance. The develop-ment of penicillin was also an important event. The Great Gatsby was a widely popular book, which is still a good read today.
1930 The 1930’s was mainly affected by the Great Depres-sion. The stock market crashed, people lost their jobs, and people barely made any money. Homeless people started living in shanties called “Hoovervilles”, named af-ter President Herbert Hoover. On the brightside, swing music was popular, and the Wizard of Oz came out in 1939, which is still a popular movie today.
1 9 4 0 During the 1940’s, there were a number of events that ocurred. One of those events was World War II, which a number of different countries, including the United States, were at war with each other. Aside from the war, there were a number of positives in the 1940’s. The comic book character, Captain America, was highly popular. Jet technology was starting to develop. Frank Sinatra and swing music were popular. The United States was starting to recover from the Great Depres-sion as well.
1 950 The 1950’s saw a number of different events. Capital-ism clashed with Communism, and the Korean War was going on. Entertainment was booming as well. Some people refer to the 1950’s as the Golden Age of Televi-sion since millions of Americans owned and watched television. Music was also big as well. The rise of Rocka-billy music and Rock N’ Roll legend Elvis Presley helped define the sound of the 1950’s. Diners were also popu-lar around the United States as well.
1960 The 1960’s brought a more free-spirited psychadelic vibe to the world. Hippies were everywhere, and lava lamps were cool. The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix were ex-tremely popular, and still are to this day. The Civil Rights Movement was a huge movement that demanded equality for all religions, sexualities, and races, especially African Americans.
1960
1970 The 1970’s was the era of Disco, The Be Gees, Classic Rock, Saturday Night Fever, and Grease. While music and entertainment was booming, technology was also booming as well. The development of the first email transmission and videogames gave way to computer technology in homes.
1980 The 1980’s brought a number of different social trends , especially when it came to technology. Techno and synthpop music was popular, as was hair metal and heavy metal. Pac-Man and other arcade games/video-games were highly popular as well.
1990 The 1990’s saw a number of important events. One big event was the popularity of grunge music, which brought alternative rock to the mainstream. Alternative rock be-came the dominant genre of the 1990’s. Videogames were also taking a new turn. Hand-held devices, such as the Gameboy Color, and game systems, such as the PlayStation were popular with children. Television shows such as All That, Beverly Hills 90210, and Rugrats were popular with children and teenagers as well.
