Just how BIG is 100 anyway?

Lincoln School kindergartners learned just how BIG the number 100 is February 12th by celebrating the 100th day of class this school year in seemingly hundreds of ways. For 90 minutes in the morning, Martha Groot, Katy Beck and Meredith Calabretta and Emily Zschoche’s classes used their imagination and blocks, Legos, cups, pennies, unifix cubes, pattern block cards and more _ in quantities of 100 _ to create and try to stack stuff.

They made snacks from carrots and cucumber slices in the shape of the number 100. They drew gum ball machines with 100 colorful pieces of gum in them.

They counted out 100 different pieces of candy to put in plastic bags for themselves. They made construction paper portraits of how they would look if they were 100 years old.

They made necklaces from 100 colorful cereal pieces.

They licked lollypops at least 100 times to get to the gum center.

They did exercises, like jumping jacks, sit-ups, toe touches, in quantities of 10 adding up to 100. They made hats and glasses with 100 on them. And much more. Groot said the kids “absolutely loved” all the 100 day activities. “It really made the number100 come alive,’’ she said.
