Use(s): Gram-negative bacilli, less effective against gram positive

Action: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis

Contraindications: to cephalosporins, <1 month old, pregnancy, lactation.

Side Effects: N/V/D, bleeding, proteinuria, lymphocytosis, super infection, headache, dizziness, rash

Nursing implications: Sensitivity to PCN or other cephalosporins. Assess for diarrhea, and blood chemistry studies, assess for s/s of superifection such as thrush and yeast infection

Nursing implications: Assess I&O, allergic Rx, Blood studies, Signs of infection.

Use(s): Syphilis, clap, gonorrhea, rickettsia infections, acne, ophthalmic neonatorum

Side Effects: Convulsions, palpitations, tachycardia, tremors, nausea, nervousness, and headache,restlessness, irritability, insomnia, dizziness. Adverse CNS reactions often more severe in children

Nursing implications: Assess Theophylline level, heart rate, respiratory status, for allergic reactions, monitor blood levels. If dose missed call MD before doubling.
