The event, “Nothin’ but a House Party” (http://www.notinbutahouseparty.com) will feature all three bands playing to a crowd that is expected to reach 1,000. The featured bands are both locally and nationally recognized artists for perform-ing favorites and renowned for their covers. And will be playing music from artists such as The Fools, J. Geils, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Frank Zappa among other artists from the 70’s, 80s and 90s.
“Nothin’ But a House Party” will feature both food and drink concessions and general seating. Tickets are limited. Price per ticket is $35 for general admis-sion/non-reserved seating and can be purchased online at www.notinbutahouseparty.com.
Both The Fools and Danny Klein have long standing careers in the music industry and have earned their spot as major nation-al performers. Both have roots and got their start in here in the Boston area.
The headlining band The Fools have had several hits that made Billboards Top 100 and have performed on US Tours with The Knack, Van Halen, Rush, Joan Jet and more. There full bio can be seen (http://www.thefools-band.com/html/museum.htm). The scintillating lead singer of THE FOOLS has a new project, his band Mike Girard’s Big Swing Thing. It’s A BIG BAND but it’s not your typical Big Band. It’s ROCK & ROLL with HORNS… A ton of them! They have been preform-ing sold out show throughout New England
Danny Klein is the found-ing member of the J. Geils band and is returning from the J. Geils national concert. Stamp Collecting Month
To encourage young people to begin the life-long hobby of stamp collecting, also known as philately, the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston is giv-ing free admission to all young-sters throughout the month of October.
This offer is part of the Museum’s celebration of National Stamp Collecting Month.
Free packets of stamps plus various stamp collecting materi-als and an instruction booklet await all future collectors. In
addition, stamp games and hunts in the Museum’s galleries will help introduce all visitors to the wide world of stamps. Current exhibits include selections from members’ collections, comics on stamps, mail carried by zepel-lines, a history of rural free deliv-ery, a celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and even a dress made out of a stamp.
In addition a free book-let featuring famous Hispanic Americans on US stamps will also be available.
The celebration of the month also includes a members dinner on October with guest speak-er Dr. Joseph Adelman from Framingham State and author of
several books on postal history. The public is invited.
The Museum also offers (for a small fee) evaluations of person-al stamp collections by appoint-ment.
A Family Day is scheduled for Halloween afternoon, October 31, from noon to 4:00.
Teachers who wish to bring their students to the Museum or have a program presented at their school will receive a discount of the fee if they register this month for visits anytime in the school year.
Coming in November is an exhibit on the history of the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, a free comic book evalu-ation and a visit from Amelia Earhart (Nov. 11 at 11:00).
More information about the Museum can be obtained by sending to [email protected] or calling 617-784-5838.
Meet Ellen Garrison Jackson: 19th Century
Agent Of ChangeOn Columbus Day, Monday
October 12, at 1 PM and 3 PM, The Robbins House premieres its new interpretive program on the life of Ellen Garrison Jackson (1823-1880s). Using informa-tion from over 100 documents and letters only recently uncov-ered, Ellen will be portrayed by Maria Madison, Robbins House President. Ellen Garrison was the daughter of a Concord farm laborer who escaped from slav-ery in New Jersey and a free born mother who was a founding member of the Concord Female Antislavery Society. Ellen was also the granddaughter of Caesar
Robbins, a previously enslaved Revolutionary War veteran.
It is from this legacy that Ellen was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1823, the same year the Robbins House was deeded to the Robbins family. A “bright scholar,” she integrated Concord’s Bicentennial parade at 12, “beneath the gaze of curios-ity, surprise, ridicule, and admi-ration.” She went on to advocate for civil rights by signing anti-segregation and discrimination petitions and having a railroad stationmaster arrested for racial discrimination, 100 years before Rosa Parks ignited the 1960s civil rights movement. As an adult, deeply affected by her family’s struggles and the plight of freed slaves, Ellen traveled south to teach students of color in communities of freed people.
On October 12, learn more about Concord’s own Ellen Garrison Jackson. The program begins at the Thoreau Garden at the Old Manse, where Ellen’s brother John Garrison worked with Henry David Thoreau to plant a vegetable garden in 1842. The garden was a gift for author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia, when they moved to the Manse. We’ll then walk across Monument Street to encounter Ellen in the yard of her home, the Robbins House, where she will talk about her life in Concord and the South before taking us inside to see the house where she grew up.
This new program was made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is an important addition to the interpretation of Concord’s past. On awarding the grant, IMLS Acting Director

A New Program At Concord’s Old Manse
On Sunday October 4, at Concord’s Old Manse, join Jenny Rankin, Interim Minister First Parish Lexington, for a fascinat-ing “deep dive” into the lure of Italy for the Transcendentalists. This illustrated talk will explore what Italy meant to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, the Alcott sisters, and Nathaniel and Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. Understand why these 19th cen-tury travelers went to Italy and how their experiences shaped their worldview and writings. Preceding the talk, we’ll offer a tour of European art objects and books brought to the Old Manse
by 19th century residents who traveled to Europe.
It was what scholar Van Wyck Brooks once called “the liter-ary flowering of New England” that led Rev. Rankin to a deeper study of the Transcendentalist writers and thinkers. “My broth-er has lived in Rome for a long time,” said Rev. Rankin, “so when I had a sabbatical, I’d go to visit him and find myself seeking out the places where Emerson went on his first trip to Italy. I was interested in this chapter in Emerson’s life because it was before he became famous. He was just a young man. His wife had died, he’d left his job as a minister, he was confused and
heartbroken and just kind of lost. Why did he get on a ship and go to Italy, I wondered. I decided to try and find out for myself.”
Her quest led her to explore Emerson’s journey to France and England as well as Italy. She then went on to trace Margaret Fuller’s footsteps and delve into the great American abolitionist Theodore Parker. She tracked down the travels of Nathaniel and Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. Some of Rankin’s research has been done in libraries and rare books rooms, pouring over old letters and manuscripts. And some of it has been done right out on the streets and roads of Concord, Boston, Cambridge, and then farther afield in Rome, Paris, London and beyond.
Jenny Rankin studied his-tory and literature at Princeton University, graduating with high honors. After travelling widely in Europe and India, she went on to earn a master’s degree at Harvard Divinity School. In addition to teaching classes and seminars in the parish and com-
munity education setting, she also creates and leads tours, both locally and overseas, to liter-ally trace the footsteps of the Transcendentalists.
The Manse tour will begin at 4:00 pm, lasting for about 30 minutes. Beginning at 4:30 pm, light refreshments will be served under the Manse tent, followed by Rev. Rankin’s talk at 4:45 pm. Tickets are $8 per person for the lecture, $12 for the tour and lecture. Reservations are suggested for the lecture and required for the Manse tour (capacity is limited).
This event takes place at the Old Manse, a property of the Trustees, located at 269 Monument Street, Concord, MA. For more information or to make a reservation, please call the Manse at 978.369.3909.

Groton Junction, now Ayer, and fought in the Civil War with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.
Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local com-munities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.
Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extend-ed only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil War battle in Virginia, was also
located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.
Hear the saga of the 53rd, including the trials and tribula-tions of travel by train and steam-boats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.
Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade stationed at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.
The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair acces-sible. This event is free and open to the public and light refresh-ments will be served. For more
information please contact the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or [email protected].

Fort Devens MuseumAre you ready for two days
in Venice and two weeks in Northern Italy and Slovenia? Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms” is the geographic setting for this proposed trip during May 11-25, 2016. We intend to visit many World War I interesting and scenic sites such as Venice, Cortina, Asolo, Caporetto Slovenia, and enjoy the best of cuisines and wines of the Friuli and Veneto areas.
Ellie Buford, a former Harvard resident now living in the area to be visited, is an expe-rienced traveler and will be the tour director. Viaggi Unlimited Travel in Aviano, Italy, will handle all travel arrangements. Local guides will accompany the twenty-two travelers to the vari-ous sites, museums, and monu-ments.
Camp Devens was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I, and two infantry divisions and many smaller units trained here en route to overseas locations. For people in Europe, World War I began earlier in 1914. Europe has already started commemorat-ing the centennial of that Great
War. While the soldiers who trained at Camp Devens fought on the Western Front in France, this trip offers the opportunity to view Italy’s enduring landscape further east and to recognize the sacrifices and challenges in war during the era.
A $100 donation to the Fort Devens Museum must be made no later than November 1, 2015, to be one of the twenty-two trav-elers. For additional informa-tion, itinerary, and price please contact Kara Fossey at the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or email [email protected]; or contact Duane Barber at 978-456-8847 or email [email protected].

Donate Blood With The Red Cross To Support Cancer
Patients During Breast Cancer
Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encour-ages eligible donors to give blood to support cancer patients and others needing blood prod-ucts.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S., with one in eight developing inva-sive breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer patients may need blood products during chemo-
therapy, mastectomy surgery or treatment of complications.
Blood donor Mary Thorngate Hall is one such example. She was diagnosed with an aggres-sive form of breast cancer in 2010.
“I began treatment (with) my first round of chemotherapy last-ing six hours. My body did not tolerate it, and I began to hemor-rhage,” she said. “I needed blood to survive. I cannot express my gratitude to the people who donated their lifesaving blood.”
Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those needing transfusions. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with
types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood.
To make an appointment to donate blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Take Time To Review College Savings
Strategies(NAPSI)—If you’re like 89 per-
cent of parents, you believe paying and saving for college is an invest-ment in your children’s future, a survey by Sallie Mae suggests.
Your kids probably agree. Ninety-three percent of teens indi-cated that college savings planning was important to them and 83 per-cent personally conducted research to learn about the best ways to pay for their college education, reports Private College 529 Plan’s (PC529) Teen College Savings Barometer Survey, conducted by ORC International.
With that in mind, whatever your children’s ages, giving your family’s college tuition planning and savings strategy a year-end checkup is a little like visiting your doctor to ensure your health is in order for the New Year.
Reviewing your general sav-ing, investment and college saving plans with your financial adviser can give you peace of mind that you have the right resources in
your plan to keep your financial goals on course for the year ahead.
To help save on the cost of private higher education, PC529, owned and operated by more than 275 private colleges and universi-ties, lets families secure tomor-row’s tuition at today’s prices. The only prepaid plan for private school tuition, it offers built-in rewards for starting to save as early as possible.
These tips from Nancy Farmer, PC529 president and former Missouri state treasurer, may also help families bolster the financial fitness of their college savings fund:
• Set up a direct-deposit account for tuition so the money is saved automatically.
• When childhood milestones occur, such as no longer need-ing diapers, put that extra money toward college savings.
• Allocate part of your tax refund to your college tuition sav-ings plan.
For more information about the plan, visit www.PrivateCollege529.com. An over-view of different college savings options, PC529 member school profiles, account owner testimoni-als and more can be found at www.TomorrowsTuitionToday.org.
