Rummage Sale Fundraiser For
Opera51 51 Walden Street, in Concord,
MA will be the site of a huge rummage sale on Saturday, October 10. All proceeds from this event will benefit Opera51, a high level amateur opera com-pany housed in FOPAC’s 51 Walden St. Many members of the cast, crew and orchestra have contributed items, so there will be something for everyone! To sustain visitors who might need a little “pick-me-up”, there will also be baked goods and juice for sale.
This is Opera51’s 5th sea-
son of presenting operas at 51 Walden. Previous performances have included “La Boheme”, “The Merry Widow”, “La Traviata”, “L’Elisir d’Amore” as well the charming Christmas musical production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” This spring’s production of Charles Gounod’s “Romeo & Juliet” will be presented next June 10, 11, 12. While most amateur opera companies make do with a piano, Opera51 is fortunate to have a full orchestra to support the exceptional soloists and chorus. The costumes are hand made by members of the company. There will be a small exhibition of these stunning creations at the sale as well.
Admission of $1.00 will be refunded at the time of purchas-es, and from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM there will be a special $5.00/bag sale. The sale opens at 10:00 AM.

Watching Your Weight?
Look For Polyols In Your Food To Cut The Sugar, Not The Flavor
(NAPSI)—There’s good news for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet and still satisfy their craving for the taste of something sweet.
Many food products are made with polyols, a group of reduced-calorie sweeteners. These sugar alternatives are being used as ingredients in a wide range of foods including ice cream, choc-olates, baked goods and more.
Get To Know PolyolsPolyols are low-digestible car-
bohydrates offering the sweet taste of sugar but with fewer calories.
Polyols and sugars are metabolized in different ways. Metabolizing polyols requires very small amounts of insulin or even none at all. As a result, polyols have considerably less than the four calories per gram of sugar and other carbohydrates. This makes them good options for people with diabetes.
The result of eating foods and beverages made with polyols is the same sweet taste of sugar but with fewer calories. By offering flavor and reduced caloric value, polyols can help people look-ing to improve their diets while continuing to enjoy their favorite sweet foods in moderation.
Foods With PolyolsIncluding foods with polyols
in your meals can be an effec-tive way to maintain a sugar-free or reduced-sugar diet, and polyols can serve as beneficial sugar replacers in a wide variety of foods and beverages.
You probably already have some foods with polyols in your kitchen. Some of the most popu-lar foods with polyols include candies, ice cream and other dairy products, baked goods and fruit spreads. You can also find polyols in chocolates, fillings and frostings, canned fruits, bev-erages and yogurt.

also contain polyols, which have properties that keep these prod-ucts sweet without promoting tooth decay. Some toothpastes, mouthwashes and pharmaceuti-cal products like throat lozenges also contain polyols.
And thanks to the variety and safety of polyols, additional sug-ar-free foods are on the way.
Finding PolyolsThere are many polyols used
today. To find out if a product contains polyols as an alterna-tive to sugar, look for the labels “sugar free” or “no sugar added.” You may find the name of one or many polyols on the Nutrition Facts panel for these products, by names including erythritol,
isomalt, lactitol, maltitol or malt-itol syrups, mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol, as well as polyglyci-tols (hydrogenated starch hydro-lysates, or HSH).

FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES TAILOR-MADE FOR AUTUMN
Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall.
• Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.
• Pumpkin picking: Much like apple picking is best in fall, so is pumpkin picking. Rather than buying your Halloween pumpkin from the grocery store, where your options may be limited, go straight to the source and pick your
future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch, which will provide a much wider selection. Let your youngsters pick their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

Save A Dog Humane Society Of SudburyGolf Tournament – NEW
DATESave A Dog Humane Society
of Sudbury is hosting a Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Monday, October 19th at the Wayland Country Club, 121 Old Sudbury Road, Route 27, in Wayland.
Join us for a fun day of 18 holes of golf, played “best ball” format, lunch, live auction with hors d’oeuvres at 3:00pm, prizes, and a 50/50 raffle. Registration opens at 9:00AM with a shot-gun start set for 10:00AM. Registration is $150 per person. The live auction is open to the
public.To register for the tournament,
or to be a sponsor, go to www.saveadog.org and click on the link.
Save A Dog Humane Society of Sudbury, incorporated in 1999, is an all-breed Dog Rescue and Adoption Facility. It is a private 5013c3 non-profit orga-nization that relies solely on its volunteers, fundraising events, and private donations. To date, over 5000 dogs have been res-cued and placed in permanent and loving homes.
This year, the organization is in the final stages of purchasing the property it has been renting for the last 8 years. Proceeds
from the tournament will ben-efit the capital campaign fund to help meet the purchase price, in addition to helping offset medi-cal expenses for some of the dogs in order to prepare them for adoption.
One such recent dog is Riley, a beautiful little 3-year old Min Pin who is partially blind due to untreated dry eye. She is lovely and very smart. She can be timid around big men, but
comes around when she knows they are dog friendly. Hikes, walks, canoe and kayak are all her favorite things, plus being cuddled. She does rely on voice recognition to know who is who, and has an excellent memory for it as well as smells of places she has been. She does need daily care and medicine for her eyes.

Bypass Sleep Deprivation: How to Enjoy Quality SleepMore Sharing ServicesShare
| Share on facebookShare on myspaceShare on google
(NewsUSA) - What do the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Challenger space shuttle tragedy and the Chernobyl nuclear acci-dent in Ukraine all have in com-mon? The Australian National Sleep Research Project says sleep deprivation contributed to the human mistakes that led to each disaster.
“Getting a good night’s sleep is as important as feeding your-self or putting gas in the car. You absolutely cannot func-tion without it. Start address-ing the stress and anxiety in your life by first considering the quality of sleep you get,” says Edward Grandi, executive direc-tor of the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA).
New research is discovering that sleep deprivation has its tenacious claws embedded in 17 separate health conditions. Not getting enough sleep can unleash elevated hostility, lead to anxi-ety and depression, affect weight loss and obesity and increase chances of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Avoid the woes of sleep depri-vation and protect your long-term health by getting enough quality sleep with these tips from ASAA:
* Be wary of late-night eat-ing habits. Going to bed over-stuffed or hungry will cause your body to spend more energy on digestion and discomfort than sleep. Plus, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine can negatively affect the quality of your slumber.
* Find a sleep schedule and stick to it. Sleep schedules help enforce your body’s sleep-wake cycle, which leads to better sleep. A consistent sleep sched-
ule is even more important for anyone doing shift work -- hours that aren’t nine to five -- because their inconsistent sleeping hab-its make them prone to shift work disorder (SWD). SWD is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by insomnia and excessive drowsiness.
* Avoid using TV or electron-ics to fall asleep. New research indicates that TV or laptop use before bed interferes with sleep, especially if they are left on dur-ing the night. Any kind of artifi-cial light, even alarm clocks, can disturb sleep and disrupt REM cycles.
* Don’t be afraid to talk to a doctor. Everyone has restless nights, but if it’s the norm, there may be an underlying cause. There are 84 different sleep dis-orders, including sleep apnea, SWD, insomnia and narcolepsy, among others.
If constant snoring is your complaint, you could have sleep
apnea, an involuntary halt in breathing that may happen up to 300 times a night. Get more tips for quality sleep at www.sleepapnea.org.

Survey Reveals Myths About Back Pain
(NAPSI)—People are so afraid of being told they will need surgery that they may not seek even the most basic help for their back pain.
That’s a key finding of a recent member survey of an organi-
zation dedicated to improving spine care—the North American Spine Society (NASS).
“It is heartbreaking to see that myths and an unneces-sary fear of surgery are hold-ing people back from getting even the most conservative help for their back pain,” said Joseph
Cheng, MD, MS, associate pro-fessor of Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and NASS Public Affairs Committee chair.
Most Don’t Need SurgeryAccording to Cheng, the vast
majority (90 percent) of people with back pain will get better without treatment or by using conservative treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication, exercise, coping skills and physi-cal therapy.
Spine surgery is recommended in only about 1 percent of cases, with very specific diagnoses, after a more conservative course of treatment already has been tried.
Back Pain MythsDespite these facts, patient
concerns about potential surgery came up many times throughout the “9 for Spine” survey results. The survey shows that 66 per-cent of spine specialists surveyed believe that fear of possible treat-ments, including surgery, keeps their patients from seeking help for back pain.
Many of their patients believe the myth that once you have spine surgery, you are destined to have multiple spine surgeries. The survey also found that over 12 percent of patients wait more than 90 days from the onset of their back pain to seek help from a spine specialist—far longer

Preventing Back PainWhen asked what advice they
would offer their patients to pre-vent back pain, 76 percent of the specialists surveyed stressed the importance of regular exer-cise and nearly 50 percent urged patients not to smoke.
Said Dr. Cheng, “Right at the top of the list are common sense things like exercising reg-ularly, not smoking, maintain-ing a healthy body weight and using proper body posture and mechanics when using electronic gadgets or lifting heavy objects.”
The North American Spine Society’s 6,500 members are dedicated to providing the high-est-quality spine care.

Exercise Today Is Beneficial 10 Years in
the Future(NewsUSA) - Just 2.5 hours
of moderate to vigorous physi-
cal activity per week can ben-
efit the cardiovascular system,
according to a study published
in “Circulation,” the journal of
the American Heart Association.
“Exercise is essential for good
vascular health,” said Niten
Singh, MD, a member of the
Society for Vascular Surgery.
“The report reinforces the impor-
tance of exercise and its effect on
good blood flow.”
Completed at University
College in London, researchers
studied more than 4,200 par-
ticipants (average age 49) for 10
years. Persons who maintained
an exercise regimen -- brisk
walking, vigorous gardening,
cycling, sports, housework and
home maintenance -- had lower
markers that indicate the risk of
coronary disease.
“For America’s Baby
Boomers, this is a wake-up call,”
said Dr. Singh. “Remain active
into your retirement years. We’re
talking about 30 minutes of exer-
cise a day.”
Exercises of moderate inten-
sity increase the heart rate and

Northern Italy and Slovenia?
Hemingway’s “Farewell to
Arms” is the geographic setting
for this proposed trip during May
11-25, 2016. We intend to visit
many World War I interesting
and scenic sites such as Venice,
Cortina, Asolo, Caporetto
Slovenia, and enjoy the best of
cuisines and wines of the Friuli
and Veneto areas.
Ellie Buford, a former
Harvard resident now living in
the area to be visited, is an expe-
rienced traveler and will be the
tour director. Viaggi Unlimited
Travel in Aviano, Italy, will
handle all travel arrangements. Local guides will accompany the twenty-two travelers to the vari-ous sites, museums, and monu-ments.
Camp Devens was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I, and two infantry divisions and many smaller units trained here en route to overseas locations. For people in Europe, World War I began earlier in 1914. Europe has already started commemorat-ing the centennial of that Great War. While the soldiers who trained at Camp Devens fought on the Western Front in France, this trip offers the opportunity to view Italy’s enduring landscape further east and to recognize the sacrifices and challenges in war during the era.
A $100 donation to the Fort Devens Museum must be made no later than November 1, 2015, to be one of the twenty-two trav-elers. For additional informa-tion, itinerary, and price please contact Kara Fossey at the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or email [email protected]; or contact Duane Barber at 978-456-8847 or email [email protected].

Donate Blood With The Red Cross To Support Cancer
Patients During Breast Cancer
Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encour-ages eligible donors to give blood to support cancer patients and others needing blood prod-ucts.
According to the American
Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S., with one in eight developing inva-sive breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer patients may need blood products during chemo-therapy, mastectomy surgery or treatment of complications.
Blood donor Mary Thorngate Hall is one such example. She was diagnosed with an aggres-sive form of breast cancer in
2010.“I began treatment (with) my
first round of chemotherapy last-ing six hours. My body did not tolerate it, and I began to hemor-rhage,” she said. “I needed blood to survive. I cannot express my gratitude to the people who donated their lifesaving blood.”
Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those needing transfusions. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood.
To make an appointment to donate blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.
Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local com-munities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.
Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extend-ed only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil War battle in Virginia, was also located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.
Hear the saga of the 53rd,
including the trials and tribula-tions of travel by train and steam-boats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.
Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade stationed at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.
The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair acces-sible. This event is free and open to the public and light refresh-ments will be served. For more information please contact the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or [email protected].

Memorial Congregational
Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or
where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preachers’ reflections on the week’s scrip-ture and lean on one another and God in prayer.
Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 min-utes and are invited to leave wor-ship after the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cook-ing, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. This fall we are studying the Ten Commandments. Childcare for infants and toddlers is provided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.
Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead to deeper human relationships.
We gather on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.
Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC located at the corner of Concord Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]

fibers ferment, they produce hor-mones that help you feel full longer.
• Weight management: Studies show that dietary fiber intake is lower in obese adults than lean ones.
• Increased mineral absorp-tion: Some fibers improve the way the body absorbs minerals, especially calcium.
• Improved digestion: The short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) produced by the fermentation of dietary fibers optimize motor activity of the colon, help to regulate intestinal mobility and contribute to the defense mech-anisms of the intestinal barri-ers. Fiber adds bulk, so it can
improve regularity.• Lowered blood cholesterol
levels: Certain types of fibers (beta-glucan, psyllium, guar gum) reduce cholesterol absorp-tion. Studies have linked a high-fiber diet with improvements in serum lipids, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein choles-terol (LDL-C), high-density lipo-protein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides.
• Reduced glycemic response: Viscous fibers slow glucose absorption and can lower the glycemic impact of foods for a lower rise in blood glucose levels.
• Combat cancer and inflam-mation: SCFAs may contribute
anti-inflammation and anti-can-cer benefits.
To help people get these ben-efits, the food industry has been adding fiber to commonly con-sumed foods including yogurt, cereals, breads, fruit juices, milk, tortillas, baked goods, ice cream, candies, and nutrition supple-ment bars and beverages.

sleep and reduce stress-related
symptoms. Essentially, worries,
pressures and fears have made
it difficult for us to turn off the
stress switch; a yoga practice
retrains our nervous system to
know how to relax and bring us
into a state of self-healing and
vibrant good health.
The Gentle Yoga class is for
anyone with a tight body, stiff-
ness, injury or recovering from
illness or surgery, as well as
someone who wants to ease into
practicing yoga. It includes yoga
breathing, and we learn a variety
of foundational postures: stand-
ing, seated and on the floor. The
instructor always offers modifi-
cations to every posture so there
is no way that you can’t receive
benefits. It’s all about YOU and
custom-fitting the yoga to YOUR
BODY. This is a very popular
class on Friday mornings, so you
should sign up right away!
The Introduction to Yoga class
covers all the basics so that your
yoga experience is comfortable,
beneficial, and therapeutic. With
clear and detailed instructions,
you will build strength, flex-
ibility, improve posture and bal-
ance, calm the mind, and enliven
and deepen the breath. Learn the
best way to sit, how to breathe,
and the correct alignments for
all postures and movements.
Suitable for most adults of any
age or physical condition, and
even those with physical limita-
tions can benefit.
The Gentle Yoga class is
offered Friday mornings from
9:30 to 10:45 beginning October
23 through December 4. The
Introduction to Yoga class will
meet on Friday mornings from 11
to 12:15, also beginning October
23 through December 4. Please
note that the classes are held
at the beautiful yoga studio at
the Emerson Hospital Integrative
Health and Wellness Center, 310
Baker Road, Concord, MA (not
at the hospital). Also note that
because of the cumulative nature
of the class, the instructor is not
allowing drop-ins. You can reg-
ister on-line by going to emer-
sonhealthyliving.org and plug in
“Gentle Yoga” or “Introduction
to Yoga”. Since these are very
popular classes, we suggest you
sign up early.

In addition a free book-let featuring famous Hispanic Americans on US stamps will also be available.
The celebration of the month also includes a members dinner on October with guest speak-er Dr. Joseph Adelman from Framingham State and author of several books on postal history. The public is invited.

The Cornerstone has changed its Saturday hours and will now be open from 10 AM to 12 noon. It is open on Mondays and Fridays from 10 AM to 2 PM and on
Wednesdays from 3 to 5:30 PM. New this fall! The shop will open at 12 noon on the first Wednesday of the month. We will be open from 12 noon to 5 PM on October 7, November 4, and December 2. Maybe this is the chance you’ve been waiting for to come and see what treasures you might find!
The Cornerstone has lightly used clothing, outerwear, and shoes for the whole family, from infants to adults. We also have small housewares, books, and toys. All are at the lowest prices you are likely to see. We do accept donations, but please be very careful to screen your dona-tions. We want items that are clean, current, and in excellent
condition. Every week we receive mountains of donations that we cannot possibly sell, and it taxes our limited space and volunteer hours.
The Cornerstone is located in Acton Congregational Church at 12 Concord Road (near the fire station and the town hall). It is staffed by church volunteers, and all the proceeds go to support the missions and ministry of the church.

Blueberry Salsa Sparkles With Flavor
(NAPSA)-Pepper in fruit
salsa? If you think it sounds
odd, just try this colorful salsa.
Blended with blueberries and
other fruit, dashes of red and
black pepper add just enough
heat to kindle a delicious combi-
nation.
Serve this lively flavored
sauce with ice cream and pound
cake, as shown here. Or try it as
a side with smoked ham, grilled
pork chops or chicken.
Fresh blueberries are avail-
able year round and are most
abundant in midsummer-ready
to blend into smoothies, toss into
your favorite chicken salad, or
sprinkle over lemon meringue
or cream pie. You should know
that blueberries are loaded with
antioxidants. Studies show that
antioxidants may help reduce the
buildup of cholesterol that con-
tributes to cardiovascular dis-
ease, stroke and other age-related
diseases.
