DUKE UNIVERSITY TIP TEST BY AUDREY COLEGROVE

Every fall several 7th grade students participate in the Duke TIP testing. Duke TIP testing allows students to set their academic goals early and to target a university or college they may want to attend. It also allows students to be introduced to academically advanced topics they chose through summer programs sponsored by Duke University. The test is one vehicle for Duke University to recognize outstanding stu-dents, which they strive to have in their community.

SEPTEMBER VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations and Thanks to our September Volunteer of the Month!

Mrs. Kathleen Joslyn

Mrs. Joslyn is our chairperson for our Partnership Programs which includes the Box Tops, Coca-Cola points, Campbell Soup Labels, Nestle Water labels, etc. She has spent many hours working on this program which has brought thou-sands of dollars to our school. Mrs. Joslyn is also our chairperson for our Mathew 25 Soci-ety and a homeroom mom. So, thank you for putting so much time and energy into All Souls Catholic School and helping the children. As a token of our appreciation she will receive a white polo shirt embroidered with “All Souls Catholic School Volunteer of the Month.” Have you been submitting your hours? If not, please do so. DOGS AND CATS AND HORSE, OH MY! BY CARLY QUINN

This year’s Blessing of the Pets was held at the Church on Hwy 46 on Saturday, October 4th. The ceremony promptly began at 10:00am. There was a great turnout with a lot of dogs this year. Blessing of the Pets is when pets are blessed in memory of Saint Francis of Assisi, who loved animals. There have been some pretty outrageous pets at the annual Blessing of the Pets.

Several students were asked “What is the strangest animal you have ever seen at the Blessing of the Pets?”

Hunter Johnson 6th grade stated “Megan Todaro’s dog. It is big as a bear.” “The strangest pets I’ve seen at the Blessing of the Pets are horses” stated Gabby Bornstein 6th grade. Jeremy Freeman 7th grade said, “Once I saw a strange looking bunny at the Blessing of the Pets.”

Years ago the Bible verse Matthew 25 inspired a group of parents to start Matthew 25 Society. This group provides anonymous support in times of celebration such as a birth, and times of special concern like an illness, injury or death. Throughout the years many families have received baskets filled with small gifts as reminders that the ASCS family goes beyond the courtyard gates. This year’s coordinator is Mrs. Kathleen Joslyn.

The Matthew 25 Society is asking for donations of gift cards, in any amount, to a local restaurant, grocery or super stores or small gifts such as word search puzzle books, candy, cof-fee mugs, etc, to fill the baskets. Mrs. Joslyn has also started collecting soda cans to turn in for recycling to help fund the ministry. Just this simple act has netted the Society over $10 to be used towards the care baskets. If you know of a family that is needing a little support please contact Cheri Macher. To assist with this ministry contact Kathleen Joslyn 386-668-7879 or [email protected].

MATTHEW 25 SOCIETY - WHAT IS IT?

PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENTS BY CARLY QUINN

Mary Lou Fess, All Souls’ Religious Education Director, was recently interviewed to find out what goes into prepar-ing for the classes. Mrs. Fess not only purchases text books, schedules speakers, and coordinates teachers for the classes she also prepares the liturgies and meets with parents to dis-cuss the importance of the sacraments. She does this both for First Reconciliation and First Communion. She stated her favorite part of religious education is seeing the eyes and smiles of the children when they understand the meaning of the sacraments.

STUDENTS UNDERSTAND GIVING

Adults understand the importance of tithing and the students of ASCS have learned by example. Mr. Doyle recently re-ceived a letter acknowledging the generosity of the students from the Society of St Vincent de Paul’s secretary, Patricia O’Neill. A portion of last year’s school Mass collection was donated to All Soul’s Society of St Vincent de Paul. The funds will be used to assist people who are in need of rent, utilities, medicine, food, or other necessities of life.

On Monday, October 6th the parent meeting for students taking First Reconciliation and First Communion will take place in the Social Hall at 7:00pm. This meeting is an infor-mational meeting for parents only. The first class for stu-dents is scheduled for Monday, October 20th at 6:30pm sharp in the Historic Chapel.

WHO WAS THAT MASKED LADY?

It was during the Friday morning announcements in the Courtyard a lady appeared in a Batman mask. She wasn’t there to fight crime or to perform super hero duties. It was Mrs. Frana. She is EXCITED about this year’s Boo Bash and wanted to let parents and students know it’s time to start preparing for the annual event open to school and parish families.

Mrs. Frana and Mrs. Bledsoe are heading this year’s annual Boo Bash to be held on Friday, October 31st from 6:00pm - 8:00pm on the school campus. Homeroom parents will send out specific information regarding the classroom sponsored games/events.

ASCS students are asked to donate one bag of candy for the event. Make sure your family’s name is clearly marked on the candy to receive (1) Bear Track. Volunteers are need to set up and clean up on Friday, October 31st as well. As with anything involving the students, volunteers must be finger-printed and have passed the Safe Environment Training test prior to helping out.

This year’s Boo Bash will have an exciting twist. First and Second place awards will be given to the two best games/booths. Early reports indicate healthy competition between the classes for the awards. The winners will receive a pop-corn or ice cream party

GOLF RAFFLE WEEKLY WINNERS BY BRIANA BLACKLEY

On Thursday, September 4th the Kindergarten and 8th grade buddies exchanged their “All About Me” posters in the Kindergarten class-rooms. Prior to the 8th graders arrival, Marissa Casullo stated she couldn’t wait to share her

poster with her 8th grade buddy, Tiana Trice. The students got to spend about an hour together discussing their posters while enjoying cookies and milk. The students shared their interest, family and other facts about their lives through their posters. The gathering was both fun and a life’s lesson in sharing.

SECOND GRADE LEARNS HOW TO PICK A BONE

What is a patella? Ask one of Mrs. Spark’s second graders and they will know. On Tuesday, September 16th Jes-sica Rozek of Central Florida AHEC, part of a state funded program to promote community health education, visited 2nd

grade along with Mr. Bones, a small hanging model skeleton, and Harriett to give the students a hands on learning experi-ence about the 200 plus bones that make up the human skeleton. Ms. Rozek, an All Souls Parishioner, visits schools to promote osteoporosis prevention and healthy living. While visiting ASCS, Ms. Rozek and the students discussed good eating habits, exercise and put together Harriett, a model skeleton, bone by bone.

MAGAZINE DRIVE BINGO PARTY

Mark your calendars because the Bingo Party is right around the corner! On Tuesday, October 28th, the students that sold enough magazines to join us will get to attend the party at 2 pm.

Mr Fuller, All Souls’ newest Middle School teacher, left the business world to pursue teaching because he wanted to do something he felt was more important to society. He cur-rently teaches Science and Lan-guage Arts at All Souls and has the 7th Grade Homeroom.

Prior to moving to Central Florida, he taught school in New Orleans, before hurricane Katrina, and at FSU. He graduated from Southern Louisiana University, UMAS and FSU with a Masters in Math. Before he started teaching, Mr. Fuller held positions as a radio switchboard operator, a morning talk show host and a general manager of a radio station. Welcome to All Souls Mr. Fuller!

MRS. LARSEN - RESOURCE TEACHER BY AUDREY COLEGROVE

MR. FULLER - MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE & LANGUAGE ARTS

BY AUDREY COLEGROVE Mrs. Larsen became a teacher because she, herself, enjoys learning and likes helping oth-ers learn when learning is sometimes difficult. Mrs. Larsen graduated from St. Mary Magdalene, Bishop Moore High School and UCF.

Prior to becoming, Charlie, Patrick and Joseph’s mother and a teacher, Mrs. Larsen was a bicycle racer, she ran a natural food store, owned a restaurant and managed a family hard-ware store. As Mrs. Larsen moves forward in her endeavors we want her to know that we will miss her here at All Souls and thank her for all that she has done.

Mrs. Szymanski isn’t new to teaching school, or to All Souls but she is the new 4th grade teacher this year. Prior to All Souls, Mrs. Szymanski taught at St. Mary Magdalene and Annunciation.

Anyone who meets Mrs. Szymanski quickly learns she enjoys teaching very much. She became a teacher because she wanted to pass on the love of learning to children and make a difference in their lives. She received her degree from Northern Illinois University and worked in insurance prior to her teaching career.

MRS. SZYMANSKI - 4TH GRADE BY AUDREY COLEGROVE

MRS. ROSEMEYER - KINDERGARTEN BY DARLA KELLEY & TIANA TRICE

Mrs. Rosemeyer has been at All Souls for a few years with this being her first as a Kindergarten teacher here. She is full of en-ergy that she exudes for all her students to see the joy in life. Mrs. Rosemeyer attended school at South Grammar High School

and received her degree from Central Connecticut Univer-sity. She answered her calling to be a teacher because she loved witnessing and sharing the “ahh” moments in the students. Although, before her calling she enjoyed other positions such as a trainer and supervisor, a parent volunteer and a Religious Education Coordinator.

All Souls Catholic School’s 12th annual auction will be held on Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Lake Mary Marriott. This year’s theme is Viva Las Vegas. Auction Co-Chairs, Linda Kazukietas and Lisa Manrique have been working since the summer in preparation for this year’s event.

The Auction Chair Committee Kick Off meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th.

If your family has not fulfilled its fundraising commitment, the school auction is the last way to complete the commit-ment by procuring items and gift certificates from restau-rants, stores, attractions, and other events. Gift certificates for services such as pest control, personal training, salon services are also very popular at the annual event. Another way to fulfill the commitment is to obtain sponsor-ships from businesses. There are various sponsorship levels for them to participate in. The deadline for turning in auc-tion procurements is February 6, 2009. Procurement and Sponsorship forms can be obtained through the School and Development Office or downloaded off the website. To volunteer for this fun event please contact the Develop-

ment Office either by phone 407-322-3795 or by email [email protected]

$CRIP A WAY TO SAVE ON TUITION BY CALVIN GARCIA

Scrip is a great way to save on tuition and get ready for the holidays without ever going to the mall, a big box store or restaurant. A percentage of each scrip order can offset the amount a family pays in annual tuition. Some families who faithfully use the Scrip program have saved more than a month’s tuition. Payments along with Scrip order requests can be submitted to the Development Office by paper or email anytime during the week however; the order will not be placed until Tuesday at noon. If an order comes in after that time then it will be placed on the following week’s or-der. Orders can be picked up on Thursdays after 1 pm. The latest Scrip Merchant list and order forms can be found un-der the Development button on the school’s website. Please contact the Development for details.

The annual magazine drive concluded Friday, September 12th. Magazine sales netted ASCS over $11,000. Four classes had 100% participation. Ms. Mates’ fifth grade class was the overall winner of the classroom challenge. It was not an easy victory however; Mrs. Ahearn’s 8th grade class, Mr. Nadeau’s 6th class and Mrs. Moran’s 1st class were not far behind with their sales and participation.

This year’s popular award was the monkey alarm clock. The Development Office had to order additional cases of the monkeys to distribute to students for the second week of sales.

The following students sold 15 magazines and earned the privilege of attending a breakfast at IHOP with Father Trout.

Dear Parents, All Souls Catholic School was ranked 12th out of 4,302 participating schools in the state of Florida, in the Box Top Program. Your support makes programs like this a success. Way To Go! We kick off the 2008-09 school year with some new Bonus Offers from Box Tops and Campbell's labels: Bonus opportunity #1 - Labels for Education (Campbell's) is running a 200 point Bonus Offer. It will be in the Sunday newspaper, October 12. It is a 1 page flyer in the coupon section. We must have these in order to take advantage of the points. Rules state we are not allowed to duplicate the flyer and that is why we need as many original flyers as possible. I will send home a reminder next week informing you of what to look for, where, and when. Bonus opportunity#2 - Box Tops for Education will double our Box Tops submissions through October 24, 2008. Please send in what you have as soon as possible. Ask family and friends to help save. To find out more opportunities to earn extra Bonus Box Tops, go to Tell friends to sign up for Box Tops for Education or boxtops4education.com/2008. This offer will expire October 31, so please do not wait. There will be a raffle and prizes for the top collectors in November. Make sure that your child's name is on the bag when you turn in your collections. Thank you in advance for your support throughout the coming school year. Sincerely, Kathleen Joslyn , [email protected]
