This summer, residents and visitors to Gun Lake, Hastings and Middleville can enjoy free rides from 6 to 8 pm on the Barry County Transit trolley one night each week starting Memorial Day weekend and continuing through Saturday, Aug. 17.

“The rides are free and we’ll have several

stops in each community,” said Barry County Transit Director Joe Bleam. “We take the sides off, so it’s open air. It’s really great on a summer evening; it gives a different atmosphere to the city.”

The trolley will give free rides in Hastings on Fridays, Gun Lake on Saturdays, and Wednesday in Middleville.

“Free trolley rides are new to Middleville this year and the route and stops are yet to be determined,” Bleam said. He said stops likely will include Thornapple Kellogg High School, Lee Elementary, Middle Villa Inn, and more.

The popular summer concert series Fridays at the Fountain returns to downtown Hastings

The Hastings City Band will continue its more than 150-year-old tradition of bringing music to visitors and residents through free summer concerts. The Wednesday concerts will be on the courthouse lawn June 12, 19, 26, and July 3 and 10, beginning at 7:30 pm.

The Hastings City Band and John Philip Sousa arrived the same decade — Sousa in 1854 and the musical group in

A mix of marches, big band pieces, ballads and contemporary tunes round out the free concerts, and guest performers often join the band.

As the calendar gets nearer to the Fourth of July, patriotic music is added to the play list, culminating with special recognition of veterans attending the concert just before July 4.

Although the band plays in Hastings, the volunteer musicians who make up the

band hail also from Delton, Middleville, Lake Odessa and many other communities. Any musicians high school age or older who are interested in joining the band need only show up at the Hastings High School band room the Tuesday prior to the concert at 7:30 pm.

Concert-goers should bring along chairs or blankets to sit on.

In the event of rain, concerts will be at the Barry Community Foundation building (formerly the First Presbyterian Church) in the former Leason Sharpe Hall.

After several years of performing at Fish Hatchery Park, the Hastings City Band last year returned to its original venue, the Barry County Courthouse lawn.

The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station is Michigan State University’s largest off-campus education complex and one of North America’s premier inland

is focused on ecological and environmental research and education. The station is comprised of a research and

education center, manor house, dairy, forest, bird sanctuary,

preserve. Many of the venues are open to the public; some charge admission.W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

Established in 1927, the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is home to dozens of species of resident and migratory birds, including bald eagles, great blue herons and trumpeter swans. A paved trail stretches the southern shore of Wintergreen Lake; a new Lake Loop trail takes

visitors around the lake and through shoreline and forest bird habitats. The North Country Trail, America’s longest National Scenic Trail, crosses the property.

Summer hours for the grounds are 9 am to 7 pm.

W.K. Kellogg Manor House

Built in 1925 and 1926, this Tudor revival estate is the former summer home of cereal magnate and philanthropist W.K. Kellogg. Perched atop the highest point along Gull Lake, the house serves as a venue for private and community events and the starting point for a self-guided historical walking tour.

Bring on the tractors and livestock shows, get ready for the tastes of candy apples and elephant ears, and enjoy the excitement and thrills of carnival rides and grandstand shows.

New and exciting entertainment and events, as well as some old favorites, are in the works for the 2013 Barry County Fair July 15 to 20.

Organizers say they are

especially excited to announce that the West Michigan Mud Run will join the grandstand schedule this year. This is a family event where contestants try to make their way through a mud pit with their vehicles.

The mud run will be broken into different classes according

The fair also announces that Gold Medal Shows, like in 2012, will again provide carnival rides and attractions at this year’s fair. Gold Medal Shows provides rides for all ages, favorite carnival treats, and traditional fair foods. They are hoping to bring bigger and more rides to Barry County.

One other new attraction planned this year is the Animal Oasis. It will be located east of the birthing tent. The Animal Oasis brings exotic animals for visitors to view including lemurs, porcupines, kangaroos and monkeys.

They also have a petting zoo with goats, sheep, miniature cattle, chickens and baby donkeys. Animal Oasis also provides a bird encounter and camel rides.

Fair organizers said about 42,000 visitors attended last year’s fair and they are hoping good weather will bring in even more visitors this year.

For more than 30 years, the Aukerman family of Prairieville has done its part to keep old-time, family country music alive. Now that Bill and Maggie Aukerman have turned over operations of their Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame Music Barn to son, John, new family music traditions are being mixed in with the standards, to the delight of everyone who visits.

After having already kicked off the season with three dates, including the May 4 return of Elvis Presley Jr. to the Prairieville stage, concert promoters are tuning up for a thunderous summer and fall schedule that

A memorial concert in honor of Prairieville friends and regulars Jim Fritzler and Homer Jones is scheduled for Aug. 31 with the series’ last two shows being highlighted by the Thunder Floor Cloggers and North Country Flyers Sept 21

and Oct. 12. The Cloggers will begin each of those concerts at 6 pm with the North Country Flyers following at 7 pm.

The Bernard Historical Museum is centered around the Bernard Hospital which Dr. Prosper Bernard built in the early 1930s.

Bernard operated this hospital in which more than 400 babies were born, until he was called to be a medical

The hospital was converted into a museum in 1962 and has grown to a collection of more

WESTERN WEEK CELEBRATES RURAL HERITAGE IN CALEDONIA

The Village of Caledonia and the Downtown Merchants Association will host the sixth annual Western Week June18 to 21 to celebrate the community’s rural heritage.

The event starts with the annual baseball game between the merchants and

the Caledonia Fire Department Tuesday evening.

Wednesday features a new event, the all-pet parade complete with judges and prizes; the day is capped off with a

movie suitable for families and free

popcorn and drinks (bring chairs or blankets for seating).

Thursday will include the farmers market; crafts and homemade baked goods also will be available. The Taste of Caledonia offers the opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive dinner while sampling many of the best dishes local restaurants have to offer.

Friday winds up the week with the expanding classic car show, which last year also

Also on the community menu will be turkey, pizza, Italian dishes, Chinese dishes, ice cream and pastries — to name a few of the many offerings.

The event is sponsored by the Middleville Lions Club.

The 24-hour Challenge bicycle event will return to Middleville for another year June 14 to 16.

Riders are challenged to ride as many miles in 24 hours as they can over a set course. Last year’s female winner rode 407.9 miles while the overall male winner completed a total of 472.6 miles. Cyclists camp out on the grounds of the Thornapple Kellogg Middle School and high school.

The annual Middleville Heritage Day celebration is set for Saturday, Sept. 7.

Throughout the day, a variety of events will take place, including a parade, car show, crafts, historical displays, games, food, tractor pulls and more. The day begins with a 10K run on the Paul Henry Thornapple trail at 7 am. Trolley rides are planned to help get visitors from one attraction to another.

No need to travel north to walk the Mackinac Bridge over Labor Day — Middleville will host its own Labor Day Bridge Walk/Volksmarch, from 9 to 11 am Monday, Sept. 2. Cyclists from beginning to advanced levels can participate in this bike tour of historical Fallasburg and the surrounding countryside. There is a southern route that goes to 100th St in Caledonia, making it 50 miles. This route can be shortened to 28 miles, going as far as

Lincoln Lake and Grand River. This route is most popular for families and recreational riders. The northern route goes toward Ionia and back to Lowell. Finally, there is a 12-mile loop around the Flat River Watershed.

There is also a full Italian meal served at the Misner House Museum yard. Participants may eat after or in the middle of their ride. Non-participants may buy lunch for $20. All fees will be used toward renovations in Fallasburg Village, particularly two stone foundations on a barn and townhouse.

Cost to participate is $25 individual/ $35 family; after July 1, 2013 - $30/$40.

The Riverwalk Festival enters its 19th year, which started as a fundraiser when the Township decided to hire

held it on Labor day Weekend, and it was quite a bit different then it is now. The only thing we still do is the arts and craft and the duck race.

For Liz Baker, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, the past 19 years have been a blur.

“Today Riverwalk is the Chamber of Commerce’s major fundraiser and at the same time it has grown into a really fun family festival in Lowell,” Baker said. “Many other events have sprouted since then.”

This year the festival added a motorcycle ride and rumble, and a parade where people on the sidelines give out canned food for donation, instead of candy.

“We do pontoon rides, kayak and canoe racing,” Baker said. “We have entertainment as well. This year we will be doing something a little different with open mic, where people can come up to the stage and demonstrate their talents.”

Baker has called the festival a three day event, which has become one full day and two

The two decade old festival will provide a food court which will include a pizza cart run by Flat River Grill, with a few other local businesses contributing with vendors.

The farmer’s market that Lowell is so accustomed to seeing in the spring has made several changes.

The market will begin June 13 and run through Sept. 12, cutting nearly two months farmers had to sell portions of their crops.

The Kent Count Youth Fair will see new additions to its schedule which will include dueling pianists and a professional sand sculpturor.

The week-long fair will take

place from August 5-10 at the Kent County Fair Grounds with an opening ceremony on August 4.

VP of the KCYF Bruce Doll has been waiting for this year’s fair for quite some time.

“This year we are doing some things differently with entertainment,” Doll said. “We are going to convert the entertainment tent into a lounging area.”

Tuesday evening will include the Mid-West dueling pianists, featuring some gentlemen who bring in two pianos and take requests.

“Swing dancing will be held on Wednesday,” Doll said. “We are going to have instruction and music.”

The professional sand sculpturor will be Lucinda “Happy Feet” Wierenga who

“It is generally crowded and we could have upward to 3,000 people wanting to ride at the same time,” Doll said with last year’s fair in mind.

The opening ceremony will be Sunday, August 4, and will include the Royal Court Coronation and a dedication of the Ron Winger Memorial Play Structure, in honor of the previous

fair manager who passed away.The hours of the fair are

from 8 am to 11 pm, however, most of the barns will close at 10 pm.

Daily parking is $6 per day, or $18 for the week, with no gate or admission fee.

Parking on Saturday, August 10 from 9 am to 12 pm is $1 with a donation of 3 or more nonperishable food items.

Items will be donated to F.R.O.M. as part of the Dream Big National Food Drive, organized by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. The goal for the fair is to raise 20,000,000 pounds of food for local food banks everywhere.
