Story Of Civil War Regiment

Did you know that an infantry regiment of about 1,000 men trained at what was once called Groton Junction, now Ayer, and fought in the Civil War with the Union’s Third Army to clear Confederate troops out of the Mississippi River basin in Louisiana? To find out about this regiment, the 53rd

Massachusetts Volunteers, who trained at Camp Stevens, come to the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday October 17th.

Many of the men of the 53rd were recruited from local com-munities - Ashby, Fitchburg, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Townsend, and Westford - in addition to a large number from towns west as far as Gardner, south to Sterling

and Clinton, and a few from the Boston area.

Camp Stevens was located on a wedge of land bounded by Old Fitchburg Road (near a reconfigured present-day Fitchburg Road, Route 2A), the Nashua River, and the tracks of the old Peterborough and Shirley Railroad (which extend-ed only as far as Greenville, New Hampshire, from Ayer). The camp, named after Major general Isaac Ingalls Stevens of Andover, who died in a Civil War battle in Virginia, was also located next to what would later become the Fort Devens airfield.

Hear the saga of the 53rd, including the trials and tribula-tions of travel by train and steam-boats to the New Orleans area, the regiment’s battle campaign up through northern Louisiana, and the eventual trip home by Mississippi steamboat and trains. It was an adventure fraught with danger and disease, altogether different for these Massachusetts farmers and craftsmen.

Telling this story will be Barry E. Schwarzel of Ayer. For six years he served with the Army Reserves in the 187th Infantry Brigade stationed at Fitchburg and subsequently at Fort Devens, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Army, he worked for 26 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, and for two years operated a diner at the Shirley/Lancaster town line.

The program starts at 1:00 PM on October 17th at the museum, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on that day. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens and is wheelchair acces-sible. This event is free and open

to the public and light refresh-ments will be served. For more information please contact the Fort Devens Museum at 978-772-1286 or [email protected].

Sports-Related Concussions Become

Topic For DebateIn their Psychology course

this week, a group of Assabet Valley Regional Technical High

seniors held a heated debate about whether or not parents should encourage children to play contact sports like football and soccer at a young age, given the known risks associated with concussions. Students were basi-

cally assigned a side, but the passion that ensued in their dis-cussion was real. “They were to research the topic and present factual arguments for or against children playing contact sports, and I think perhaps the data they found may have actually swayed them towards the side they were given. We have been studying how the brain cells form, and what critical stages of develop-ment may be affected by serious injury, and the students really got into it,” laughed Mary Jo Nawrocki, their instructor.

Jason Monteiro, a Berlin senior in Electrical Wiring, listed fac-tual accounts of how concussion incidences have doubled in the last decade, while Gina Phillips, a senior in Metal Fabrication and avid soccer player, coun-tered with the fact that while incidences in youth may have doubled, high school and col-lege level athletes have actually seen a decrease in concussion injuries, attributable, she felt, to better instruction and awareness at the older level. “Now there are programs like CAPP and Heads-Up that do pre-evaluation testing to form baselines, and the new protocols don’t let you back on the field for at least two weeks

after a head injury. These pro-grams are clearly making a dif-ference in the number of concus-sions, and should be introduced at younger ages. Don’t deny a child the chance to play sports because there is a slim chance of getting hurt. Injuries can happen with anything, not just sports,” she argued. Ashley Boudreau, a Marlborough senior in Health Technologies, felt that the ben-efits of playing sports outweigh the injury risk. “Children enjoy sports for the social aspects, and they learn confidence, sports-manship, how to deal with structure, and get much need-ed exercise from sports,” she continued, but Sherley Pagan, a Marlborough student in Design & Visual Communications, sug-gested that perhaps children could gain the same benefits if they just played sports that did not involve physical contact.

The students are taking a col-lege level Psychology course given through Quinsigamond Community College, and will earn three college credits upon completion. Teaching is certain-ly not a new profession for Mary Jo Nawrocki, former Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School Superintendent-Director,

Trivia Bee Seeks Sponsors

Quick, can you answer this trivia: “What is a great way to spend a few hours with your Westborough friends and neigh-bors as you exercise your brain, your civic pride, and your silly bone, all while supporting all six Westborough Public Schools?” The answer is easy: bring your family to the Westborough Education Foundation Trivia Bee on Monday, November 2nd at 6:30. Who will be this year’s Trivia Bee Champs? Come cheer on your favorite team!

The 8th Annual Trivia Bee will be on Monday, November 2, 2015 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Westborough. More than 600 people attended last year’s Bee! There is no school the following day, so the WEF expects another record turnout.

The Westborough Education Foundation is currently recruit-ing teams and planning for a fun-filled event that will challenge teams to bring forth their best and brightest to compete in the contest. As in past years, the Bee will feature questions about New England sports, popular culture, government, science, arts and literature, and Westborough his-

tory. In addition to the Trivia Bee entertainment, there will be kids activities provided by Matt Travis and Athletic Revolution, silent auction items, raffles, food and music.

The Trivia Bee is the Westborough Education Foundation’s largest single fund-raiser. Last year, the event raised more than $17,000 to support educational grants to teachers and administrators from across all six of Westborough’s public schools. WEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to pro-viding financial support to fos-ter excellence and innovation in education in Westborough. The grants allow teachers to develop

creative programs in literature and language, the arts, tech-nology, social studies, science and math. Grants totaling over $24,000 were awarded in 2015 for creative and innovative pro-grams and events.

Sponsoring the Trivia Bee is a great way to show your com-mitment to education. Sponsors can use their own trivia buffs or request a team from the schools and community to represent them. Neighborhood groups, local businesses, and non-profit community organizations are all welcome and encouraged to sponsor a team. For informa-tion about teams, please contact Maureen Johnson: maureenj1@

ing you at the Trivia Bee on November 2, 2015. For more information about the Trivia Bee and the Westborough Education Foundation, please go to www.westborougheducationfounda-tion.com.

Assabet Valley Announces Grand Re-Opening Celebration

For three years, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High has been working on a $62.4 million renovation project, updating the forty-two year old building with new plumbing and wiring, new heating and cooling, new windows and doors, new life safety systems (fire alarms system), a new security system with cameras, a new roof, new multi-purpose science labs, and becoming more handicap accessible. The

Massachusetts School Building Authority covered 53.5% of the cost, with the member towns contributing the rest. Staff and students have endured the construction ramifications of accidental fire alarms, power outages, shuffled classrooms, and spotty internet with patience, know-ing that the end result would be well worth the effort, and the delivery of quality education did not miss a beat.

On October 24th, the school is celebrating the final outcome with a Grand Re-Opening event, beginning at 9 AM with a coffee and pastry reception, followed by the official ribbon cutting at 10 AM. There will be building tours , refreshments, entertainment and sports events throughout the day. “We are inviting everyone to join with us in cel-ebrating the completion of our renovation project. We would especially like to encourage our alumni to visit and see all the changes to their alma mater. With the cooperation of the weather, we hope to have a tremendous crowd here, all feeling the spirit that is Assabet Valley,” announced Mark Hollick, Principal.

Assabet Valley Epicurean Restaurant Re-Opening

After a busy summer of renovation, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High is ready to show off the Epicurean Restaurant, by re-opening to the public with an All-You-Can-Eat Lunch Buffet on Thursday, October 15th. There are many beautiful new additions, but the cost for a full meal, including coffee and dessert, remains at only $8.75. Normal hours will be Wednesday through Friday, 11 AM to 1 PM, and the first Wednesday of each month will be the ever popular All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast Buffet. Reservations are encouraged as the restaurant often fills, particularly on buffet day. Please call 508-485-9430, ext. 1119.

A new feature sure to be a hit with staff and visitors alike will be the Epi Express, featuring ready to go lunch items as well as prepared foods that can be reheated for dinner at home. Watch the website for details and menus.

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Once the biscuits have cooled, store in a sealed food-storage plastic bag at room temperature. It won’t matter if they’re no longer as soft-like fresh-baked biscuits-the milk and sugar mixture will work its magic either way. For more great tasting recipes, visit www.Pillsbury.com.

Biscuit Bread Pudding Prep Time: 20 Minutes Start to Finish: 1 Hour 15 Minutes 12 Pillsbury(r) Grands! frozen

buttermilk biscuits (from 16-oz. bag) 8 eggs 41⁄2 cups milk 2⁄3 cup sugar 2⁄3 cup raisins 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla Caramel topping, warmed, if

desired 1. Heat oven to 350° F. Bake

biscuits as directed on bag. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, generously spray twelve 10-oz. custard cups or twelve 41⁄2x11⁄4-inch disposable foil tart pans with cooking spray. In large bowl, beat eggs. Add milk, sugar, raisins, cinnamon and vanilla; mix well.

3. Cut baked biscuits into 1-inch cubes. Add to egg mixture; mix well. Let stand 5 minutes. Divide biscuit mixture evenly among custard cups.

4. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until set. With knife or metal spatula, loosen edges of each pudding; slide onto dessert plate. Drizzle with warm topping.

12 servings High Altitude (3500-6500 ft.):

Follow high-altitude directions on bag when baking biscuits. Gradually stir 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour into ingredients in step 2. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.
