Nosce Te Ipsum Weekly Bulletin Week Commencing 28th November 2016 Headteachers News Last week the Year 6 Senior Students were presented with their badges of responsibility in assembly. They were very excited about the presentation and can now be easily identified by pupils, staff and parents. They can be seen wearing their badges proudly on the left lapel of their school blazer alongside their House badge. This is also where your child should be wearing their House badge, if your child needs a replacement then we do have some available for purchase or we can easily order another for you. If this is the case then please send your child into school with £2 in an envelope marked with your child’s name and pass to Mrs Stoner. She will ensure that a replacement is provided for your child. We like all pupils to wear their House badges on their school blazers rather than their school jumper/cardigan and would like all pupils to have a House badge. At a recent House meeting, it was mentioned by the House Captains that some pupils did not have their badges on their blazers; I assured them that this would be communicated to parents in our next Bulletin publication to you. It is possible that your child has been wearing their badge on their school cardigan or jumper; if that is the case then can I kindly ask that you move this onto your child’s blazer please. Next Friday we have our very special Advent event on Hove seafront at Beach Hut number 191. I hope to see you all there! It is a very special event and certainly starts the Deepdene Christmas festivities this year. Art work has been produced by pupils in Years 3,4 5 and 6 ready for display and all pupils in these year groups will be singing a selection of Christmas songs that they have been busy practising over the last few weeks. It is likely that you will be invited to join in with a few Christmas Carol favourites so please do come prepared to sing! I shall be sending a separate e mail mid-week with final details and arrangements for this event. This event has been previously advertised as starting at 6pm, please note that the start time is in fact 5:30pm. If your child is in Years 3,4,5 or 6 they will need to arrive at 5:20pm and go straight to Mrs Robinson to order to be ready for our 5:30pm start. There will be plenty of time to look at the art work with your child after the singing. We would really like a prompt start at 5:30pm so can I kindly ask for your support with this. School uniform is not required; however, winter warmers will be essential. We have been very lucky with the weather in previous years so let’s hope for a dry evening again this year. Finally, may I remind you all that the school Christmas Fayre is on Sunday 4th December and is being held at the school. There has already been a detailed separate parent mail sent out by the Deepdene Association. If you have not had the opportunity to digest the information, then please do go back and take a closer look at this, to read more about what they have in store for you all! There are also posters displayed at the entrances of the school outlining what there is to see and do. It is set to be a fabulous afternoon. Just to remind you all, doors open at 1pm and the event will start winding up around 3pm. You are then all invited to join Mrs Stoner in the hall for a cheery Christmas carol sing-a-long. The Deepdene Association have been busy with preparations and we hope to see you all there. Have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Mad about Maths Day 21st November 2016

On Monday the ENTIRE SCHOOL just went completely crazy about Maths for our first ever Mad About Maths Day.

During the whole morning, lessons were given over to mathematical themes, showing the pupils how maths is important in all sorts of ways and for all sorts of different things. Year 5 and 6 pupils learnt about how speed is the measure of how far something travels in a given time, worked out their own speeds, and found out about the fastest car in the world (which is called the Bloodhound). Year 4 considered how architects use maths to make precise diagrams of their building designs and had a go at being Architects of Multilink. Even the English, History and Drama lessons were mathematical too! Year 3 loved their maths activities so much they all came and said “Thank you” to me at lunch time!

Year 1 and 2 had a relaxed and fun time moving between different activities on counting, number and addition. They had a go at timing activities, did some bowling (adding up the scores), and played board games such as Ludo, Snakes-and-Ladders and Shape Snap. The guess my number game was very popular!

We were very privileged to have a visiting speaker for the Upper School Assembly. Mr B came and showed us some amazing maths tricks, proving once and for all that Maths Is Magic. He could even add up five 5-digit numbers in his head, and tell us the answer before we could work it out on our calculators! The Lower School Assembly was lively too, with children making number shapes with their bodies, doing all sorts of mental calculations and even helping out with a maths magic trick. We had a wonderful finale singing along to Percy Parker’s two-times table song. Wave your arms in the air with Percy!

It was such a great day, and I felt very proud of all our pupils engaging with such enthusiasm and energy in all their different activities. Well done to you all!Mrs James

Reception NewsWe have been busy learning about hedgehogs and hibernation we have made hedgehogs out of clay, painted pictures of hedgehogs and written a story about ‘Sam the hedgehog finding a home’.

Last Friday the class went mad with spots for ‘Children in Need’ and by the end of the afternoon we had a giant Pudsey covered in spots.

Next week we will be visiting the church for our first Nativity practise and more information will follow shortly regarding costumes.Mrs Stoner

Year 1 News Year One had a wonderful time at the Hove Museum. The children took part in a Toy Workshop learning all about toys from the past and what materials they were made from. They had the opportunity to handle old toys and had lots of fun making toys and playing together. The Wizard’s Attic was full of interesting artefacts and the children were especially careful not to wake him up...! A wonderful trip which will lead to some super work in class. Year 2 News Last week year 2 had a wonderful week! They had been waiting for Science to explore electrical circuits and all of the children managed to make a circuit that light up a bulb, using wires, a battery and a bulb. They worked in pairs and discussed why some of their circuits worked and why others didn’t.

We continued to look at the Mexican town of Tocuaro and looked at pictures of different masks, for which Tocuaro is famous for. The children all painted or designed their own sugar mask. We hope to take the children to a Mexican restaurant in the next couple of weeks, so look out for a letter in their book bags!

In English this week we learnt how to improve our punctuation in our writing (using commas, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks) and trying to choose adventurous words to make our writing more exciting.

I was extremely impressed with the children during mental maths this week, they were working out addition and subtraction of two digit numbers in their heads (without using a hundred square). Our daily practising of counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s is also helping the children recall multiplication facts quickly.Ms Rosen

Year 3 News Year 3 got down to work with their grammar last week, learning how to punctuate direct speech and use apostrophes correctly. They are preparing to write an adventure story about time travel in which their imaginations can have free rein! Year 3 will be learning the Christmas carol ‘Silent Night’ in French next week, so look out for the words in your child’s reading folder. Any practising that can be done at home will be very helpful. We have enjoyed our activities for anti-bullying week, coming up with lots of good positive ideas in our ‘Power for Good’ PSHE lesson, and showing a real understanding of other people’s feelings. Good work Year 3.Mrs Watkins and Ms Hayward

Upper School News Congratulations to the upper school team who masterminded this year’s Children in Need fundraising celebrations at our school. The week was kicked off in style with an assembly led by Charity Representative, Amelie Tadd; Head Girl, Olivia Pavlides and Head Boy, Louie Glanvill. The team did a wonderful job of launching our charity events which this year included a ‘Spotacular Dress Up’ and a ‘Stick the Pennies on Pudsey’ competition. We hope that in next week’s bulletin we will be able to share with you the grand total raised by the school and to announce which class raised the most money in their Pudsey Penny Stick on. Watch this space!Mrs Croucher

Date for your diary: Upper School Senior Positions of Responsibility Team Christmas party All Year 5 prefects and Year 6 pupils who hold a position of responsibility are invited. We will be enjoying a celebratory meal at Donatello’s in Brighton on Wednesday 14th December. More details to be shared by Parentmail.Mrs Croucher and Ms Brown
